CSISAR--Complete System Integrated SAR

The CSISAR tool is GUI based and very simple to use. The algorithms are robust, and the unique processing flows, that the user is stepped through, virtually eliminate the possibility of error in GEOINT production. An integrated data manager is a key part of the CSISAR system. This data manager keeps track of the data available to a user and informs the user of what data is available and what can be done with that data. This keeps the user from having to be trained in the nuances of the algorithms. CSISAR also has an integrated product manager, which helps the user identify, view and manage previously made products. CSISAR was originally developed in 2010-2011 as a Windows based system. It was updated in 2015 to be a Linux based system. This SAND report is intended to make the Product Description and User’s Guide for CSISAR (originally included within the software) more widely available. New is a brief addition of Linux-specific installation details.

Research Needs for Developing Qualification Standards for Flight Simulation Training Devices with Head Mounted Displays

This presentation discusses research needs to support evidence-based qualification standards for Flight Simulation Training Devices (FSTDs) with head mounted displays (HMDs). Currently, the FAA and EASA have no qualification standards specifically for FSTDs using HMDs and extended reality (XR) visuals, and existing qualification standards may not be sufficient. Special Conditions can be prescribed for the evaluation and qualification of individual devices, but these Special Conditions need to be assessed and adjusted on a case-by-case basis resulting in an elaborate process. Furthermore, test tolerances used in Special Conditions are often based on conventional visual systems and may not be adequate. This presentation first identifies gaps in the current knowledge of using HMDs in pilot training, and, more specifically, using HMDs in the training of manual aircraft control with motion cues. Next, research is proposed to help close these gaps, inform the development of qualification criteria and tolerances, and guide efforts to update regulations. The Vertical Motion Simulator (VMS) at NASA Ames Research Center, with its large motion capability, is currently undergoing significant upgrades including a state-of-the-art out-the-window visual system. In addition, an HMD capability will be introduced to use in conjunction with the conventional visual system. With its long history of setting standards in the simulation industry, the VMS is the ultimate tool to conduct research that could help accelerate the development of standards for the use of HMDs in FSTDs. The goal of the talk is ultimately to spark a discussion about the research needs and priorities to best serve the development of new qualification standards.

PTTI-aided ephemeris calculation and rapid data link acquisition for manned space flight

Complexity of future manned space flight mission control can be significantly reduced by integrating GPS, the PTTI source, into telemetry, tracking, and command (TT&C). Future telecommunications, space tracking electronic intelligence, metrology, navigation, and data acquisition will thereby be served, including: on-board ephemeris determination, reduced synchronization time for time division multiple access (TDMA) links, and in-flight clock calibration, increasing on-board autonomy and reducing ground support costs. Manned space transportation through the first quarter of the 21st century will probably depend on a mix of vehicles, including the Advanced Manned Launch System (AMLS), the Personnel Launch System (PLS), and continued use of the Shuttle Fleet. Precise Ephemeris is important on-board for mission success, status monitoring, also for rendezvous and docking. Use of GPS can eliminate ground based tracking/processing, enhancing autonomy and reducing communications bandwidth. GPS time can simplify complicated functions used in bandwidth efficient time division multiple access (TDMA) communications, such as: precise and realtime synchronization of receive reference timing, transmit-timing and acquisition control, unique synchronization word (UW) detection, and elastic buffering. High clock accuracy provides increased signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio during acquisition, permitting narrower acquisition frequency and time windows. Spaceborne systems requirements to provide capabilities such as: refinement of the GEM-72 gravity model based on satellite tracking observations from ATS-6 to GEOS-3, relativistic clock experiments, NASA crustal dynamics program for developing space geodetic techniques to study the earth's crust, its gravity field, and earthquake mechanisms, and multi-disciplinary space geodetic tracking for studying global climatic changes are also reviewed.

Assessment of Thin Plastic Scintillation Detectors for Beta-Particle Measurements at the Advanced Test Reactor Critical Facility

The Fission Wire Measurement System is a custom measurement system designed in the 1960s to measure the beta-particle activity of irradiated uranium-aluminum fission wires. This measurement is conducted to determine the fission rate profile of the Advanced Reactor Test Critical facility. The Advanced Test Reactor Critical facility is an open-pool, low-power test reactor used to qualify experiment configurations and verify core models prior to full-power experiment irradiations in the Advanced Test Reactor. Power distribution measurements in ATR-C use uranium-aluminum wires that are distributed throughout the core to validate simulation and modeling results. These measurements require from 340 to 1500 wires to be irradiated and measured within a 12-hour window. The system consists of 4 measurement channels and one reference channel, each with a 2-pi proportional gas flow detector and the measurement channels each have an automated sample changer. The gas flow detectors are of a custom design for this detector system that use methane gas with a large anode wire compared to modern proportional counters. These detectors, which are nearly 60 years old are irreplaceable. The measurements from these gas detectors are affected by the gas flow rate, atmospheric and line pressure, and are very sensitive to the applied high voltage. Recent improvements have been made to the control and data acquisition system, but the detectors have remained the same. The nature of the measurement of the fission product decay activity is such that the energy spectrum of the signal is changing with time. Thin, 250-um thick, plastic scintillators were commercially obtained as a potential replacement for the gas flow detectors. The original calibration of the uranium-aluminum fission wires was conducted in 1965 using a series of irradiations of gold foils and the wires in a well-characterized thermal neutron field. These measurements provided a time-dependent fission rate conversion factor from the gold foil data to calibrate the fission wires based on the response from the 2-pi proportional gas detectors. Transitioning to the new detectors requires qualification and testing. The sensitivity of the scintillators to changes in the energy spectrum of the fission wires and translation of the calibration factor have been completed. These measurements indicated that the sensitivity of the scintillators over time changes at a different rate than the sensitivity of the gas flow detectors. However, the inverse activity of measurements of both detector types is linear with time. Initial results indicate that the scintillator detectors will be a sufficient replacement for the gas detectors with minor adjustments to the fission rate conversion factor. Replacement of the detectors will improve the fission wire measurements and provide a more stable and reliable measurement system.

Screening of alkali-assisted storage conditions to define the operational window of deacetylation within storage systems in the bioenergy supply chain

Overcoming biomass heterogeneity and associated recalcitrance to thermal, chemical, and enzymatic depolymerization is a necessary but challenging aspect of valorizing lignocellulosic biomass to fuels and chemicals. Here, this study explores how this recalcitrance can be reduced during the supply chain unit operation of storage, which is required for seasonally harvested agricultural residues to maintain constant throughput at a biorefinery. In this work, partial alkali pretreatment was performed just prior to corn stover entering storage, which had the benefit of providing a high pH environment entering storage such that soluble sugars were preserved and saponified acetyl groups in hemicellulose. This work investigated a range of viable conditions where saponification and preservation occur simultaneously by varying the moisture content (40% and 60%) and concentrations of sodium hydroxide (low and high) during aerobic and anaerobic storage. Anaerobic conditions preserved overall dry matter below 5% in the three scenarios evaluated, and the highest alkali loading solubilized up to 15% lignin, 18% xylan, and 50% of acetate, meanwhile doubling the extractable components. Scanning electron microscopy images highlighted potential physical impacts including cell-wall disruption near vascular bundles, pitting within parenchyma cells, and cell-wall distortion. Techno-economic assessment indicated that this storage approach and associated logistics system is economically competitive with a conventional approach using low-moisture bales.

Daylight simulation workflows incorporating measured bidirectional scattering distribution functions

Daylight predictions of architectural spaces depend on good estimates of light transfer through skylights, windows and other fenestration systems. For clear glazing and painted surfaces, parametric transmission and reflection models have proven adequate, but there are many cases where light-scattering, semi-specular shading and daylighting materials defy simple characterization. Something as commonplace as fabric roller shades and venetian blinds may turn daylight prediction into guesswork, and numerous advanced systems on the market tuned specifically to enhance daylight are not sufficiently characterized to distinguish their performance. In this paper, we describe new tools available to handle novel and specialized fabrics, materials, and devices using data-driven modelling of bi-directional scattering distribution functions (BSDFs). These representations are usually tabulated at constant or adjustable angular resolution for efficient point-in-time and annual daylight simulations. We describe a variety of BSDF simulation workflows, including some of the tools and methods that make advanced analysis possible, and highlight some of the current challenges. We conclude with a discussion of future work and how such data might be created and shared worldwide.

Suppression of ion temperature gradient modes by Alfvén activity above a drive threshold in DIII-D

A recent study demonstrates that the suppression of ion temperature gradient (ITG) modes can occur during the nonlinear evolution of toroidicity-induced Alfvén eigenmodes (TAEs) in the DIII-D tokamak [Du et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 135, 265101 (2025)]. In that work, ITG was suppressed by the formation of a narrow, TAE-induced shear flow layer, whose shearing rate exceeded the ITG decorrelation rate. Here, the shear flow arises from an imbalance between Reynolds and Maxwell stress forces, as the TAE departs from the conventional shear Alfvén wave polarization. This follow-up paper systematically identifies the plasma conditions required for robust ITG suppression through a series of comparative experiments. The results show that TAEs routinely suppress ITG turbulence in plasmas with higher local safety factor (q), elevated fast-ion beta, and larger populations of fast ions on passing orbits, i.e., conditions consistent with the substantial TAE drive. Database analysis further reveals the existence of a threshold in TAE drive for ITG suppression. That is, once the drive exceeds a critical value within a favorable q window, the system undergoes the nonlinear bifurcation process, characterized by a sharp increase in TAE saturated amplitudes at a nearly fixed fast ion drive, suppression of ITG turbulence, and the formation of an internal thermal transport barrier at the localized radii.

Radiation Transport Simulation of the Sulfur Counting System in the Radiation Metrology Laboratory (RML)

At the request of staff members from the Radiation Metrology Laboratory (RML), a series of Monte Carlo radiation transport calculations were performed using two different models of the detector geometry of the RMLs sulfur counting system. The fraction of electrons from each β-decay of 32 P in the sulfur pellet that enter the window of the sulfur counting system was calculated with both MCNP and ITS. In addition, the differential energy distributions of the electrons entering the counting system window were computed. There was significant agreement between the integral and differential quantities calculated by the two transport codes. Summary tables are for the integral efficiency values are found in the body of the report.

A geospatial risk analysis graphical user interface for identifying hazardous chemical emission sources

Background: Performing back trajectory and forward trajectory using the Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory Model (HYSPLIT) is a reliable approach for assessing particle transport after release among mid-field atmospheric models. HYSPLIT has an externally facing online interface that allows non-expert users to run the model trajectories without requiring extensive training or programming. However, the existing HYSPLIT interface is limited if simulations have a large amount of meteorological data and timesteps that are not coincident. The objective of this study is to design and develop a more robust tool to rapidly evaluate hazard transport conditions and to perform risk analysis, while still maintaining an intuitive and user-friendly interface. Methods: HYSPLIT calculates forward and backward trajectories of particles based on wind speed, wind direction, and the corresponding location, timestamp, and Pasquill stability classes of the regions of the atmosphere in terms of the wind speed, the amount of solar radiation, and the fractional cloud cover. The computed particle transport trajectories, combined with the online Proton Transfer Reaction-Mass Spectrometry (PTR-MS) data (https://figshare.com/articles/dataset/ARL_Data_from_PROS_station_at_Hanford_site/19993964), can be used to identify and quantify the sources and affected area of the hazardous chemicals’ emission using the potential source distribution function (PSDF). PSDF is an improved statistical function based on the well-known potential source contribution function (PSCF) in establishing the air pollutant source and receptor relationship. Performing this analysis requires a range of meteorological and pollutant concentration measurements to be statistically meaningful. The existing HYSPLIT graphical user interface (GUI) does not easily permit computations of trajectories of a dataset of meteorological data in high temporal frequency. To improve the performance of HYSPLIT computations from a large dataset and enhance risk analysis of the accidental release of material at risk, a geospatial risk analysis tool (GRAT-GUI) is created to allow large data sets to be processed instantaneously and to provide ease of visualization. Results: The GRAT-GUI is a native desktop-based application and can be run in any Windows 10 system without any internet access requirements, thus providing a secure way to process large meteorological datasets even on a standalone computer. GRAT-GUI has features to import, integrate, and convert meteorological data with various formats for hazardous chemical emission source identification and risk analysis as a self-explanatory user interface. The tool is available at https://figshare.com/articles/software/GRAT/19426742.

Exposure damage mechanisms for KCl windows in high power laser systems

An experimental study of the 10.6 micrometer and 0.6328 micrometer optical properties of single crystal and europium doped polycrystal is described. Significant variations in the optical properties are observed over periods of exposure up to 100 hours. Models are proposed to predict the 10.6 micrometer absorptivity for long exposure periods. Mechanical creep has been detected in both materials at high temperature.

Polarizing-microscope concept adapted for thick samples. Optical axis of crystal usually found by examining sample thinner than 1 mm between crossed polarizing plates. Frequently impractical to cut off small sample of crystal for testing, technique modified to accommodate large crystals. Ability to circumvent effect of birefringence has applications where laser beams must be transmitted through uniaxial crystals, as in laser diagnostics of contained flows in systems requiring windows for optical access.

Hybrid rocket fuel combustion and regression rate study

The objectives of this study are to develop hybrid fuels (1) with higher regression rates and reduced dependence on fuel grain geometry and (2) that maximize potential specific impulse using low-cost materials. A hybrid slab window motor system was developed to screen candidate fuels - their combustion behavior and regression rate. Combustion behavior diagnostics consisted of video and high speed motion pictures coverage. The mean fuel regression rates were determined by before and after measurements of the fuel slabs. The fuel for this initial investigation consisted of hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene binder with coal and aluminum fillers. At low oxidizer flux levels (and corresponding fuel regression rates) the filled-binder fuels burn in a layered fashion, forming an aluminum containing binder/coal surface melt that, in turn, forms into filigrees or flakes that are stripped off by the crossflow. This melt process appears to diminish with increasing oxidizer flux level. Heat transfer by radiation is a significant contributor, producing the desired increase in magnitude and reduction in flow dependency (power law exponent) of the fuel regression rate.

A browse facility for Earth science remote sensing data: Center director's discretionary fund final report

An image data visual browse facility is developed for a UNIX platform using the X Windows 11 system. It allows one to visually examine reduced resolution image data to determine which data are applicable for further research. Links with a relational data base manager then allow one to extract not only the full resolution image data, but any other ancillary data related to the case study. Various techniques are examined for compression of the image data in order to reduce data storage requirements and time necessary to transmit the data on the internet. Data used were from the WetNet project.
