Olivine accumulation in Apollo rock 12040 and basaltic fragments, using textural and microprobe analyses
The engineering, design, and fabrication status of the volume accumulator units to be employed in the NaK primary and secondary coolant loops of the 5-kwe reactor thermoelectric system are described. Three identical VAU's are required - two for the primary coolant loop, and one for the secondary coolant loop. The VAU's utilize nested-formed bellows as the flexing member, are hermetically sealed, provide double containment and utilize a combination of gas pressure force and bellows spring force to obtain the desired pressure regulation of the coolant loops. All parts of the VAU, except the NaK inlet tube, are to be fabricated from Inconel 718.
The computer codes, VANEP and VANES, were written and used to aid in the design and performance calculation of the volume accumulator units (VAU) for the 5-kwe reactor thermoelectric system. VANEP computes the VAU design which meets the primary coolant loop VAU volume and pressure performance requirements. VANES computes the performance of the VAU design, determined from the VANEP code, at the conditions of the secondary coolant loop. The codes can also compute the performance characteristics of the VAU's under conditions of possible modes of failure which still permit continued system operation.
Results are given of experiments conducted in order to improve the electric characteristics of lead accumulators by ultrasonic irradiation of their electrolytes. The experimental results discussed complete the research conducted on static Le2, Le3 and D. Quaiser cells whose solutions were irradiated beforehand with ultrasounds of the frequency of 1 MHz. It is demonstrated that the discharge currents and capacitances of the investigated cells keep to higher values even 1 year after ultrasonic irradiation of the electrolyte. The experimental results are discussed.
It is shown that the surface density of accumulated electrons on a wall in contact with a plasma can be expressed as a simple function of the Debye shielding distance in the plasma. The result may have applications to problems involving objects immersed in a space plasma.
The nonhomogeneous-accumulation model for the formation of the terrestrial planets is described, and its consequences for the formation of the Venusian atmosphere are assayed in the context of our knowledge of the composition of the earth and carbonaceous chondrites. The relative abundances of the low-temperature condensibles in the reservoirs at the earth's surface are applied to Venus. Although carbonaceous chondrites show similar properties for the chemically bound elements, they show large deficiencies for the rare gases. The major gases on Venus, by volume, are predicted to be 98.12% CO2, 1.86% N2 and 0.02% Ar-40.
Potential users of SEASAT for remote sensing of coastal zone phenomena have established a need for resolutions beyond those attainable with SEASAT-A. One method of obtaining higher resolutions would be to fly the instruments aboard airplanes rather than a satellite. The number of aircraft that would be required is estimated along with the rate at which data would be accumulated. Only the East Coast from Maine to Key West is considered. Three different coverage widths are used. The narrowest area is wide enough to cover all bay and estuary regions along the coast; a wider area includes all ocean out to twelve nautical miles from the coast; the maximum size area considered extends out to 200 nautical miles from the coast.
The effect of accumulation layers on the accuracy of quartz thin-film thickness monitors is evaluated. Use of an expanded plane wave ultrasonic propagation theory correctly accounts for observed experimental data. The magnitude of the maximum errors calculated for simply reversing the order of a series of aluminum gold deposits is on the order of 5%. If one totally neglects intervening layers, multiple film propagation and nonlinearity can produce errors greater than 50%.
Rock 71597, a coarse-grained plagioclase-poikilitic basalt that contains 15.8% MgO and 19.3% modal olivine, is described. Olivine and ilmenite crystals occur in two size generations, and large subequant olivine crystals, small 'matrix' olivines, and large ilmenite crystals are characterized. Since large olivine and ilmenite crystals with skeletal habits suggestive of crystallization under relatively rapid cooling are found in a rock whose texture is consonant with slower cooling, it is suggested that the large skeletal crystals formed toward the more rapidly cooled margin of a flow and accumulated by gravitational crystal settling toward the flow's interior. In support of this hypothesis, calculations indicate that the observed olivine compositions are approximately 10 mol% too Fe-rich to have crystallized from a melt of composition corresponding to that of 71597.
The United States Coast Guard is developing AIREYE, an all weather, day/night airborne surveillance system, for installation aboard future medium range surveillance aircraft. As part of this program, a series of controlled tests were conducted off southern California to evaluate the oil slick detection capabilities of two Motorola developed, side looking radars. The systems, a real aperture AN/APS-94D and a synthetic aperture coherent on receive (COR) were flown over the Santa Barbara Channel on May 19, 1976. Targets imaged during the coincident overflights included natural oil seepage, simulated oil spills, oil production platforms, piers, mooring buoys, commercial boats and barges at other targets. Based on an analysis of imagery from the coincident radar runs, COR provides better detection of natural and man made oil slicks, whereas the AN/APS-94D consistently exhibited higher surface target detection results. This and other tests have shown that active microwave systems have considerable potential for aiding in the detection and analysis of surface oil accumulations.
Gallium doped germanium is suitable for applications in the detection of far infrared radiation. Measurements were made on experimental photoconductors (PCs), accumulation mode charge injection devices (AMCIDs), and the SSPC (a switched, sampled PC alternative to the AMCID). The results indicate that the SSPC, which had a responsivity near 1.5 amp/watt, is desirable for use in two dimensional detector arrays.
A three dimensional finite-element computer program has been developed to analyze layered fiber-reinforced composite laminate. This program is capable of: (1) calculating the detailed stress distribution, (2) identifying the damage zone and mode of failure, (3) analyzing the damage accumulation, and (4) determining the ultimate strength of the composite laminate.
Buried thermoluminescence dosimeters may be useful in remote sensing of petroleum and natural gas accumulations and blind uranium deposits. They act as integrating detectors that smooth out the effects of environmental variations that affect other measuring systems and result in irregularities and poor repeatability in measurements made during gas and radiometric surveys.
The evidence accumulation proces of an image understanding system is described enabling the system to perform top-down(goal-oriented) picture processing as well as bottom-up verification of consistent spatial relations among objects.
The validity of the two body approximation in calculations of planetary growth is examined. Use of this approximation is essential to practical 3 dimensional simulations of planetary growth. With regard to gravitational perturbations, the changes in semimajor axis, eccentricity, and inclination resulting from close planetesimal encounters (near 1 A.U.) out to 10 Tisserand sphere of influence radii were calculated by two and three dimensional numerical integration. These were compared with the results of treating the encounter as a two body problem, as is customary in Monte Carlo calculations of orbital evolution and in numerical and analytical studies of planetary accumulation. It is found that for values of (V/V sub e) approx. 0.35 (V = relative velocity, V = escape velocity of largest body), the two body approximation fails to describe the outcome of individual encounters. In this low velocity region, the two body gravitational focusing cross section is no longer valid.
A fully systolic architecture for the implementation of digital sequence correlator/accumulators is described. These devices consist of a two-dimensional array of processing elements that are conceived for efficient fabrication in Very Large Scale Integrated (VLSI) circuits. A custom VLSI chip that was implemented using these concepts is described. The chip, which contains a four-lag three-level sequence correlator and four bits of accumulation with overflow detection, was designed using the Integrated UNIX-Based Computer Aided Design (CAD) System. Applications of such devices include the synchronization of coded telemetry data, alignment of both real time and non-real time Very Large Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) signals, and the implementation of digital filters and processes of many types.
In order to provide a context for understanding lunar formation, 28 new three-dimensional simulations of terrestrial planet formation from a gas-free planetesimal swarm have been carried out. The natural orbital and collisional evolution of 500 initial planetesimals ranging in mass from 5.7 x 10 to the 24th g to 1.1 x 10 to the 26th g is followed until only final planets in noncrossing orbits remain. The results are in general agreement with the number, size, and orbits of the observed terrestrial planets, but also show considerable variation of stochastic origin. These results are combined with 11 simulations using 500 bodies of equal initial mass presented earlier, as well as with some other numerical studies, to conclude that for a wide range of initial conditions, terrestrial planet accumulation was characterized by giant impacts, ranging in mass up to 3 times the mass of Mars, at typical impact velocities of about 9 km/sec. These large planetesimals and the impacts they produce are sufficient to explain the unexpectedly large angular momentum of the earth-moon system.
Current theories on the accretion of the planets from the solar nebula are reviewed. The settling of solid material to the central plane of the nebula and the formation of planetesimals is reviewed for both the case of a laminar nebula and a turbulent nebula. The advances that have been made in understanding the accumulation of the terrestrial and giant planets in the solar nebula are reviewed along with the remaining problems.
