STREAM: Strategic Technology Roadmapping and Energy, Environmental, and Economic Analysis Model

This is the implementation of the framework for the planning of the technological makeup of the industrial sector. Motivated by the efforts to achieve carbon neutrality, the model of this framework modifies the portfolio of technologies over time for the sector of interest such that, - Net Present Value (NPV) is minimized - Constraint on Greenhouse Emissions (GHG), e.g. carbon dioxide, is satisfied - Demand of the underlying commodity is satisfied - The current implementation reflects a case study for the electric power sector. The for a given initial set of capacities of different vintages, the space of decisions include, - Retirement of the existing capacities. - Retrofitting the existing capacities to alternative characteristics. - Creation of new capacities from a technology portfolio. All the associated quantities with the deployments, e.g. CO2, heat requirement, etc.

Reliable Integration of AI Data Centers at Scale – Analysis, Modeling and Synthetic Data Generation

This report analyzes the power consumption of large dynamic digital loads using the open-source MIT supercloud and SURF datasets. With an emphasis on the MIT data, we calculate important power consumption characteristics to help system operators improve generation planning and resource allocation. We also introduce a rudimentary model for generating synthetic load profiles.

Preliminary development of a fundamental analysis model for crack growth in a fiber reinforced composite material

A mathematical model for the strength of fiber reinforced composites containing specific flaws is described. The approach is to embed a local heterogeneous region surrounding the crack tip in an anisotropic elastic continuum. By consideration of the individual failure events activated near the flaw tip, a strength prediction can be made from basic properties of the composite constituents. Computations for arbitrary flaw size and orientation have been performed for unidirectional composites with linear elastic-brittle constituent behavior. The mechanical properties were those of graphite epoxy. With the rupture properties arbitrarily varied to test the capability of the model to reflect real fracture modes in fiber composites, it is shown that fiber breakage, matrix crazing, crack bridging, matrix-fiber debonding, and axial splitting all can occur during gradually increasing load prior to catastrophic fracture. Qualitative comparisons with experimental results on edge-notched unidirectional graphite epoxy specimens have also been made.

Modification of a variational objective analysis model for new equations for pressure gradient and vertical velocity in the lower troposphere and for spatial resolution and accuracy of satellite data

Since late 1982 NASA has supported research to develop a numerical variational model for the diagnostic assimilation of conventional and space-based meteorological data. In order to analyze the model components, four variational models are defined dividing the problem naturally according to increasing complexity. The first of these variational models (MODEL I), the subject of this report, contains the two nonlinear horizontal momentum equations, the integrated continuity equation, and the hydrostatic equation. This report summarizes the results of research (1) to improve the way the large nonmeteorological parts of the pressure gradient force are partitioned between the two terms of the pressure gradient force terms of the horizontal momentum equations, (2) to generalize the integrated continuity equation to account for variable pressure thickness over elevated terrain, and (3) to introduce horizontal variation in the precision modulus weights for the observations.

Checkpoint and restart procedures for single and multi-stage structural model analysis in NASTRAN/COSMIC on a CDC 176

The Underwater Explosions Research Division (UERD) of the David Taylor Naval Ship Research and Development Center makes extensive use of NASTRAN/COSMIC on a CDC 176 to evaluate the structural response of ship structures subjected to underwater explosion shock loadings in the time domain. As relatively new users, UERD engineers have experienced difficulties with the checkpoint/restart feature because of the vague instructions in the user manual. Working procedures for the application of the checkpoint/restart feature to the transient analysis using NASTRAN/COSMIC are illustrated.

The use of available potential energy to evaluate the impact of satellite data on numerical model analysis during FGGE

To evaluate the effect of the FGGE satellite observing system, the following two data sets were compared by examining the available potential energy (APE) and extratropical cyclone activity within the entire global domain during the first Special Observing Period: (1) the complete FGGE IIIb set, which incorporates satellite soundings, and (2) a NOSAT set which incorporates only conventional data. The time series of the daily total APEs indicate that NOSAT values are larger than the FGGE values, although in the Northern Hemisphere the differences are negligible. Analyses of cyclone scale features revealed only minor differences between the Northern Hemisphere FGGE and NOSAT analyses. On the other hand, substantial differences were revealed in the two Southern Hemisphere analyses, where the satellite soundings apparently add detail to the FGGE set.

Satellite and Model Analysis of the Atmospheric Moisture Budget in High Latitudes

In order to understand variations of accumulation over Greenland, it is necessary to investigate precipitation and its variations. Observations of precipitation over Greenland are limited and generally inaccurate, but the analyzed wind, geopotential height, and moisture fields are available for recent years. The objective of this study is to enhance the dynamic method for retrieving high resolution precipitation over Greenland from the analyzed fields. The dynamic method enhanced in this study is referred to as the improved dynamic method.
