Absolute rate parameters for the reaction of atomic hydrogen with hydrazine

Absolute rate parameters for the reaction of atomic hydrogen with hydrazine H + N2H4 yields H2 + N2H3 have been determined in a direct manner using flash photolysis of dilute mixtures of hydrazine in helium and time dependent observation of H via resonance fluorescence. By measuring the H-atom decay under pseudo-first-order conditions, the bimolecular rate constant K sub 1 was obtained over the temperature range 228-400 K. The data were fitted with good linearity to the Arrhenius expression K sub 1 = (9.87 plus or minus 1.17) x 10 to the -12th exp(-2380 plus or minus 100/RT) cu cm/molecule/s. The data were shown to be free of any contributions from secondary reactions involving H as a reactant or product.

NASA atomic hydrogen standards program: An update

Comparisons are made between the NP series and the NX series of hydrogen masers. A field operable hydrogen maser (NR series) is also described. Atomic hydrogen primary frequency standards are in development stages. Standards are being developed for a hydrogen beam frequency standard and for a concertina hydrogen maser.

Absolute frequency of an atomic hydrogen maser clock

An accurate determination was made of the unperturbed atomic hydrogen ground state hyperfine transition frequency (F=1,m=0 - F=0,m=0) in reference to present world wide realizations of internationally defined time interval. In relation to the international atomic time system, the composite value is 1,420,405,751.7755 plus or minus 0.0031 HZ.

Concerted hydrogen atom exchange between three HF molecules

The termolecular reaction involving concerted hydrogen-atom exchange between three HF molecules was investigated with particular attention given to the effects of correlation at the various stationary points along the reaction. Using large segmented Gaussian basis sets to locate the (HF)3 stationary points at the SCF level, the geometries of the stable hydrogen-bonded trimer, which is of C(3h) symmetry, were located, together with the transition state for hydrogen exchange, which is of D(3h) symmetry. Then, using a large atomic natural orbital basis and correlating all valence electrons, the energetics of the exchange reaction were evaluated at the correlated level.

(abstract) Measurement of the Total Cross Section for Excitation of the 2p State of Atomic Hydrogen by Electron Impact

The excitation function of prompt Lyman-alpha radiation, produced by electron impact excitation of atomic hydrogen in the energy range from threshold to 1.8 keV, has been measured in a crossed-beam experiment. The present data are significantly different from earlier experimental results and are in good agreement with recent theoretical convergent close coupling calculations over a two order of magnitude range in impact energy. Multistate coupling affecting the excitation function to 1 keV is apparent in both the present experimental and recent theoretical results.

Measurements of Excitation Functions and Line Polarizations for Electron Impact Excitation of the n = 2, 3 States of Atomic Hydrogen in the Energy Range 11 - 2000 eV

The electron-atomic hydrogen scattering system is an important testing ground for theoretical models and has received a great deal of attention from experimentalists and theoreticians alike over the years. A complete description of the excitation process requires a knowledge of many different parameters, and experimental measurements of these parameters have been performed in various laboratories around the world. As far as total cross section data are concerned it has been noted that the discrepancy between the data of Long et al. and Williams for n = 2 excitations needs to be resolved in the interests of any further refinement of theory. We report new measurements of total cross sections and atomic line polarizations for both n=2 and n=3 excitations at energies from threshold to 2000 eV...

Atomic hydrogen and nitrogen distributions from atmosphere explorer measurements

We were selective as to our approach to research activities, and devoted primary attention to two investigations concerning the global behavior of atomic hydrogen in the Earth's upper atmosphere. We derive the thermospheric concentration of H by applying the condition of charge-exchange equilibrium between hydrogen and oxygen atoms and ions to in-situ measurements of F-region composition and temperature from the series of Atmosphere Explorer (AE) aeronomy satellites. Progress and accomplishments on these chosen research projects are summarized.

Diurnal variations of atomic hydrogen - Observations and calculations

Theoretical calculations of the diurnal variation of atomic hydrogen in the thermosphere are presented that simultaneously evaluate the effects of thermosphere rotation, thermal escape, charge exchange with O(+) ions, charge exchange with hot H(+) ions, transport due to winds, and ballistic fluxes in a consistent manner. The first five effects cause a significant departure from the zero net ballistic flux condition. A thermospheric wind with a peak velocity of 50 m per sec at exobase altitude and a total charge exchange flux varying from 0 to 0.2 billion per sq cm per sec are found to be consistent with the observations.

Absolute atomic hydrogen density measurements in an atmospheric pressure plasma jet: generation, transport and recombination from the active discharge region to the effluent

Atomic hydrogen (H) generated by atmospheric pressure radio frequency (RF) plasma jet is investigated by two-photon absorption laser induced fluorescence in a He-H 2 mixture. The reported time and spatially resolved H density profiles enable a detailed analysis of the species generation, transport and decay along the axis of symmetry of the jet. Here, the H density distribution for a continuous RF plasma jet corresponds well with the outcome of a Pseudo-1D plug flow model. In addition, RF power modulation has a strong effect on the H density in the active discharge region but has a negligible effect on the H density in the far effluent.

Ground state properties of spin-alined atomic hydrogen

Theoretical calculation of the ground state properties of spin-alined atomic hydrogen by the Monte Carlo method. The interatomic interaction, as described by the results of Kolos and Wolniewicz (1965), is made fit to a Morse potential form. An appropriate trail wavefunction is formed from the short-range part of the WKB solution for a pair of atoms interacting through a Morse potential.

The latitudinal variation of the charge exchange induced atomic hydrogen escape flux

Using plasma data from the Isis 2 spacecraft and Arecibo radar, diffusive equilibrium models of the ionosphere were constructed for equinox conditions. These plasmaspheric models were combined with models of the neutral atmosphere to calculate the atomic hydrogen escape flux due to charge exchange between thermal protons and to calculate cooler hydrogen and oxygen atoms as a function of dipole latitude and local time. These calculations showed that the daytime escape flux increases as the absolute value of the dipole latitude decreases, reaching its maximum value at the magnetic equator. At 15 hours local time (LT) on March 23, 1972, the calculated escape flux varied from an insignificant amount at 55 deg dipole latitude, to 3 x 10 to the 8th atoms/sq cm sec at the magnetic equators.
