Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) magnets have sparked widespread attention due to their potential in spintronic applications as well as in fundamental physics. Ferromagnetic vdW compound Fe 3 GeTe 2 (FGT) and its Ga variants have garnered significant interest due to their itinerant magnetism, correlated states, and high magnetic transition temperature. Experimental studies have demonstrated the tunability of FGT’s Curie temperature, T C , through adjustments in quintuple layer numbers (QL) and carrier concentrations, n. However, the underlying mechanism remains elusive. In this study, we employ molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) to synthesize 2D FGT films down to 1 QL with precise layer control, facilitating an exploration of the band structure and the evolution of itinerant carrier density. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) reveals significant band structure changes at the ultra-thin limit, while first-principles calculations elucidate the band evolution from 1 QL to bulk, largely governed by interlayer coupling. Additionally, we find that n is intrinsically linked to the number of QL and temperature, with a critical value triggering the magnetic phase transition. Our findings underscore the pivotal role of band structure and itinerant electrons in governing magnetic phase transitions in such 2D vdW magnetic materials.
Moiré superlattices in semiconductors exhibit a rich variety of interaction-induced topological states, including quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effects. A recent study hinted that twisted WSe 2 homobilayer (tWSe 2 ) could host a QAH state but lacked direct evidence of ferromagnetism, a key hallmark of this phase. Here, we report the first direct evidence of QAH states in tWSe 2 with spontaneous ferromagnetism. Specifically, we employ polarization-resolved attractive polaron spectroscopy on a dual-gated, 2° tWSe 2 and observe direct signatures of spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking at hole filling 𝜈 = 1. Together with a Chern number (𝐶) measurement via Streda formula analysis, we identify this magnetized state as a topological state, characterized by 𝐶 = 1. Furthermore, we demonstrate that these topological and magnetic properties are tunable via a finite displacement field, between a QAH ferromagnetic state and an antiferromagnetic state. Our findings position tWSe 2 as a highly versatile, stable, and optically addressable platform for investigating topological order and strong correlations in two-dimensional landscapes.

We examine the bulk electronic structure of Nd 3 Ni 2 O 7 using Ni 2 p core-level hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy combined with density functional theory + dynamical mean-field theory. Our results reveal a large deviation of the Ni 3 d occupation from the formal Ni 2.5 + valency, highlighting the importance of the charge transfer from oxygen ligands. We find that the dominant d 8 configuration is accompanied by nearly equal contributions from d 7 and d 9 states, exhibiting an unusual valence state among Ni-based oxides. Finally, we discuss the Ni d x 2 − y 2 and d z 2 orbital-dependent hybridization, correlation and local spin dynamics. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Motivated by the pair-density-wave (PDW) state found in the one-dimensional Kondo-Heisenberg chain, we report on a determinant quantum Monte Carlo study of pair fields for a two-dimensional half-filled Hubbard layer coupled to an itinerant, noninteracting layer with one electron per site. In a specific range of interlayer hopping, the pairing vertex associated with PDW order becomes more attractive than that for uniform d-wave pairing, although both remain subdominant to the leading antiferromagnetic correlations at half filling. In conclusion, our result sheds light on where one potentially may find a PDW state in such a model.
