Metagalactic gamma rays from relativistic-electron bremsstrahlung interactions.

Evaluation of gamma-ray spectra calculated for relativistic-electron bremsstrahlung interactions at cosmological distances under the assumption of a single power-law source spectrum for the electrons. It is concluded that such spectra cannot match the form of the observed cosmic gamma-ray spectrum above 1 MeV, as has previously been suggested.

Inner bremsstrahlung as a source of X-rays in the steady-state universe.

Consideration of the compatibility of matter creation in steady-state cosmology with certain X-ray observations. It is shown that, because of inner bremsstrahlung from neutron decay, the steady-state universe with neutron creation in diffuse regions is inconsistent with X-ray observations around 100 keV, unless the particle density of the universe is less than 0.1 per cu m.

Comparison of measured and theoretical inverse bremsstrahlung and photoionization absorption of infrared radiation in a H-He plasma.

The absorption coefficients of 1.15- and 3.39-micrometer radiation for a homogeneous H-He plasma have been measured in a temperature and electron density range where the major absorption mechanisms are electron-ion inverse bremsstrahlung and neutral-atom photoionization. Measurements were made behind both the incident and reflected shock waves in a driven tube by recording the laser intensity transmitted along the tube diameter as a function of time. The measured values compare well with those obtained from theoretical calculations for a gas in thermodynamic equilibrium.

Measurements of electron-bremsstrahlung coincidence rates at intermediate electron energies

Coincidence rates have been measured for inelastically scattered electrons and their associated bremsstrahlung for bombarding energies of 0.20 and 0.15 MeV. Measurements were made for an electron angle of 45 deg and a photon angle of 20 deg. Inelastic electron energies of 0.15 and 0.16 MeV were considered for an incident energy of 0.2 MeV and an inelastic electron energy of 0.12 MeV was considered for an incident energy of 0.15 MeV. To observe the trend with atomic number, Al and Au targets were used. The experimental cross section differentials in photon and electron angles and energy were found to be smaller than the predictions of the Bethe-Heitler theory.

Impulsive solar X-ray bursts: Bremsstrahlung radiation from a beam of electrons in the solar chromosphere and the total energy of solar flares

Analysis of various aspects of impulsive X-ray bursts (IXB's) has lead to the consideration of a model where the X-rays are produced by bremsstrahlung radiation from a beam of electrons directed toward the photosphere. It was found that in general the X-ray spectrum from such a beam will fall off more rapidly than when the effect of the beaming of radiation is neglected. Furthermore, the spectral index of the resulting X-rays appears to increase by about unity for X-ray energies 100 kev, a fact which may explain the observed cutoff in the spectrum of the IXB's. It is also shown that in such a model there is sufficient energy in the form of nonthermal electrons to explain the total energy (approximately 10 to the 32nd power ergs) of a flare.

Thermal-bremsstrahlung interpretation of cluster X-ray sources.

Analysis of the X-ray data for the extended sources in Coma, Perseus, and Virgo in terms of an isothermal gas-sphere model emitting thermal-bremsstrahlung radiation. It is found that the gas distribution is somewhat less centrally condensed than the galaxies, and that the gas mass is generally a small fraction of the binding mass of each cluster. In the case of the Coma cluster, approximately one-eighth of the binding mass (with an uncertainty of about 50%) may be in the form of hot gas at 100,000,000 K if H sub zero = 50 km/sec/Mpc.

Coincidence measurement of the fully differential cross section for atomic-field bremsstrahlung

A coincidence measurement was made of the absolute cross section for electron-atomic-field bremsstrahlung, differential in photon energy, photon-emission angle, and electron scattering angle. The incident electron energy was 140 keV and the scattering materials were thin films of aluminum and gold. The data are compared to the theoretical calculations of Elwert and Haug and of Bethe and Heitler. Both theories give generally satisfactory agreement for aluminum. The Elwert-Haug theory is somewhat more accurate for gold.

Comparison of flare bremsstrahlung resulting from energetic thermal and nonthermal electrons

The paper investigates the behavior of the X-ray bremsstrahlung spectra resulting from two distinct types of electron distribution functions impinging on a target atmosphere during flare activity. A power-law distribution function is compared with two double-peaked Maxwellians. The results of these calculations show that it would be difficult to rule out multithermal interpretations for the emitted high-energy X-rays.

Impulsive solar X-ray bursts. III - Polarization, directivity, and spectrum of the reflected and total bremsstrahlung radiation from a beam of electrons directed toward the photosphere

The paper presents the spectrum, directivity, and state of polarization of the bremsstrahlung radiation expected from a beam of high-energy electrons spiraling along radial magnetic field lines toward the photosphere. A Monte Carlo method is then described for evaluation of the spectrum, directivity, and polarization of X-rays diffusely reflected from stellar photospheres. The accuracy of the technique is evaluated through comparison with analytic results. The calculated characteristics of the incident X-rays are used to evaluate the spectrum, directivity, and polarization of the reflected and total X-ray fluxes. The results are compared with observations.

Electron, electron-bremsstrahlung and proton depth-dose data for space-shielding applications

A data set has been developed, consisting of depth-dose distributions for omni-directional electron and proton fluxes incident on aluminum shields. The principal new feature of this work is the accurate treatment, based on detailed Monte Carlo calculations, of the electron-produced bremsstrahlung component. Results covering the energy region of interest in space-shielding calculations have been obtained for the absorbed dose (a) as a function of depth in a semi-infinite medium, (b) at the edge of slab shields, and (c) at the center of a solid sphere. The dose to a thin tissue-equivalent detector was obtained as well as that in aluminum. Various results and comparisons with other work are given.

The results from the X ray bremsstrahlung experiment of Project Trigger

Analysis of the bremsstrahlung X-ray data produced the following conclusions. The counting rate observed before the explosion was an expected normal quiet background. An unexpected increase in the counting rate below 20 keV was observed after the explosion, which may have been an effect of the explosion. A significant 0.13-H2 peak in the power spectral density of the X-ray flux was observed, which is interpreted as evidence for a particle-wave-particle interaction involving a bounce resonance stimulated by the explosion. Dispersed continuation of this interaction may have been responsible for delayed long-term precipitation.

Thick-target bremsstrahlung interpretation of short time-scale solar hard X-ray features

Steady-state analyses of bremsstrahlung hard X-ray production in solar flares are appropriate only if the lifetime of the high energy electrons in the X-ray source is much shorter than the duration of the observed X-ray burst. For a thick-target nonthermal model, this implies that a full time-dependent analysis is required when the duration of the burst is comparable to the collisional lifetime of the injected electrons, in turn set by the lengths and densities of the flaring region. In this paper we present the results of such a time-dependent analysis, and we point out that the intrinsic temporal signature of the thick-target production mechanism, caused by the finite travel time of the electrons through the target, may indeed rule out such a mechanism for extremely short duration hard X-ray events.

Directivity of Bremsstrahlung radiation from relativistic beams and the Gamma-Rays from solar flares

It has been observed that flares with greater than 10 Mev gamma-ray emission are concentrated around the solar limb with a dispersion of 10 to 20 degrees. It is shown that the bremsstrahlung by relativistic electrons is responsible for such gamma-rays and that the expected relativistic beaming cannot explain this dispersion. It is argued that this dispersion is predominately a reflection of the pitch angle distribution of the electrons. Then it is shown that this requires a small variation of the magnetic field from the point where the electrons are injected to the photosphere and a nearly isotropic (in the downward direction) pitch angle distribution at the injection. The influence of other effects on the observed distribution is also discussed.

Study of non-thermal photon production under different scenarios in solar flares. 2: The Compton inverse and Bremsstrahlung models and fittings

Energy spectra of photons emitted from Bremsstrahlung (BR) of energetic electrons with matter, is obtained from the deconvolution of the electron energy spectra. It can be inferred that the scenario for the production of X-rays and gamma rays in solar flares may vary from event to event. However, it is possible in many cases to associated low energy events to impulsive acceleration, and the high energy phase of some events to stochastic acceleration. In both cases, flare particles seem to be strongly modulated by local energy losses. Electric field acceleration, associated to neutral current sheets is a suitable candidate for impulsive acceleration. Finally, that the predominant radiation process of this radiation is the inverse Compton effect due to the local flare photon field.

Morphological study of energetic electron precipitation events using the satellite bremsstrahlung X ray technique

The precipitation of energetic electrons into the atmosphere is investigated with simultaneous measurements of bremsstrahlung X-rays, emitted from different local time sectors. The measurements were performed from the low-altitude, polar-orbiting satellite P78-1 with an array of X-ray spectrometers (21-139 keV). Magnetic local-time (MLT) profiles of the intensities and energy spectra were obtained for a broad span of L values. From approximately 0930 to 1400 MLT the average X-ray intensity was found to decrease with increasing magnetic local time, whereas from 2200 to 0200 MLT no clear trend with local time was observed. The data presented are noted to correspond closely with the relative electron precipitation (REP)-type events, though no evidence of a distinct group of REP was found.
