Structure of triple perovskite BaSr 2 MgTa 2 O 9 revisited

An experimental investigation of the structure and crystal-chemistry of the triple perovskite BaSr 2 MgTa 2 O 9 is reported. Polycrystalline BaSr 2 MgTa 2 O 9 was synthesized via solid-state reaction and its structure quantitatively probed at 10 and 300 K using neutron diffraction. Monoclinic (A2/m, a 0 $\bar{b}$ – $b$ – ) and trigonal structural models (P$\bar{3}$c1, a – a – a – ) were fit to diffraction data. The former was found to correctly reproduce experimental intensities, while the latter failed to do so. This difference is attributed to the ability of the monoclinic model to accurately reflect octahedral tilting. BaSr 2 MgTa 2 O 9 features corner-sharing MgO 6 and TaO 6 octahedra with barium and strontium cations occupying cubooctahedral holes. Barium and strontium are disordered over the A site, whereas B site cations magnesium and tantalum are ordered. Finally, chemical substitution of strontium for barium in Ba 3 MgTa 2 O 9 induces tilting of MgO 6 and TaO 6 octahedra in two directions and geometric distortions of MgO 6 octahedra.

2D Homologous Series SrFM n BiS n +2 (M = Pb, Ag 0.5 Bi 0.5 ; n = 0, 1) and Commensurately Modulated Sr 2 F 2 Bi 2/3 S 2

In this work, we report three new mixed-anion two-dimensional (2D) compounds: SrFPbBiS 3 , SrFAg 0.5 Bi 1.5 S 3 , and Sr 2 F 2 Bi 2/3 S 2 . Their structures as well as the parent compound SrFBiS 2 were refined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction data, with the sequence of SrFBiS 2 , SrFPbBiS 3 , and SrFAg 0.5 Bi 1.5 S 3 defining the new homologous series SrFM n BiS n+2 (M = Pb, Ag 0.5 Bi 0.5 ; n= 0, 1). Sr 2 F 2 Bi 2/3 S 2 has a different structure, which is modulated with a q vector of 1/3b* and was refined in superspace group X2/m(0 β 0)00 as well as in the 1x3x1 superstructure with space group C2/m (with similar results). Sr 2 F 2 Bi 2/3 S 2 features hexagonal layers of alternating [Sr 2 F 2 ] 2+ and [Bi 2/3 S 2 ] 2- , and the modulated structure arises from the unique ordering pattern of Sr 2+ cations. SrFPbBiS 3 , SrFAg 0.5 Bi 1.5 S 3 , and Sr 2 F 2 Bi 2/3 S 2 are semiconductors with band gaps of 1.31, 1.21, and 1.85 eV, respectively. The latter compound exhibits room temperature red photoluminescence at ~ 700 nm.

Interplay Between Metastability and Mechanically Induced Structural Instability in CsPbBr 3 Photovoltaic Perovskite

An atomic-level understanding of the underlying structural metastability is still absent in halide perovskite photovoltaic systems. Focusing on the model material CsPbBr 3 , the impact of mechanically induced atomic structure alteration is elucidated through structural modeling and X-ray diffraction measurements. Sudden Cs–Br bond breaking drives the system metastability, where the first-order transition arises from cation-halide bond strain relief by severing the corner connectivity of the PbBr 6 units. The pressure–volume and entropy terms govern the Gibbs free-energy landscape in halide perovskites. In conclusion, metastability is revealed as a critical factor limiting the performance of lead halide perovskites under extreme but natural environments.

Improved methods for separation of Cobalt, Manganese, Nickel, Lithium from Waste Lithium-ion Battery Scrap

Improved methods for separation of Cobalt, Manganese, Nickel, Lithium from Waste Lithium-ion Battery Scrap Mark L. Strauss1, John Klaehn1 Luis Diaz Aldana1, Tedd Lister1 Idaho National Laboratory1, Biological and Chemical Processing Department, Idaho Falls, Idaho 83415 ABSTRACT The current methods for the separation of Co, Mn, Ni, Li require that the leach solution have a pH between 2-4 in order to use many Cyanex cationic exchange products. Using a unique buffer solution for the reagent combined with the leachate of innovative electrochemical leaching process for lithium batteries demonstrates the separation is possible without a large of pH modification as other commercial hydrometallugical separation process. This research demonstrates a process that is more environmentally sustainable because the reagent consumption may be less. The corresponding McCable-Thiele diagrams and number of theoretical stages were determined to achieve a 80-90% purity of cobalt, manganese, nickel and lithium.

Charge order driven multiferroic behavior in Sr 4 Fe 6 O 12 : An ab-initio study

Here, in this paper, we report the structural, electronic, and ferroelectric properties of the layered mixed-valent transition-metal compound Sr 4 ⁢ Fe 6 ⁢O 12 (SFO). We demonstrate how SFO undergoes a phase transition from a high-temperature (𝑇) centrosymmetric tetragonal phase (𝑃⁢4 2 /𝑚⁢𝑛⁢𝑚) to a low-𝑇 polar orthorhombic phase (𝑃⁢𝑚⁢𝑛⁢2 1 ). The transition is primarily driven by charge ordering at tetrahedral Fe-layer creating Fe 3+ and Fe 2+ cations between two edge-sharing tetrahedra. This charge ordering induces electronic polarization, which is remarkably larger (3.5 times) in magnitude than ionic polarization and oppositely directed, giving a net polarization of 0.05 C/m 2 which is comparable to the state-of-the-art rare-earth nickelets and manganite perovskites. The direction of structural distortion, governed by the polar mode irrep $Γ^−_5$, depends sensitively on the type of magnetic ordering in the Fe-octahedral layer. Consequently, both the ionic and electronic polarization directions are influenced by magnetic ordering, suggesting the potential for multiferroic behavior with strong magnetoelectric coupling in this material.

Influence of Cation Size on the Local Atomic Structure and Electronic Properties of Ta Perovskite Oxynitrides

Partial anion substitution in transition metal oxides provides rich opportunities to control and tune physical and chemical properties, for example, combining the merits of oxides and nitrides. In addition, the possibility of resulting anion sublattice order provides a means to target polar and chiral structures based on a wide array of accessible structural archetypes by design. Here, in this work, we investigate the local structures of a family of perovskite tantalum oxynitrides—ATaO 2 N (A = Ba, Sr, and Ca)—using a combination of experimental and theoretical approaches including neutron total scattering, density functional theory (DFT), and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations. We present the first experimental study of chemical short-range order (CSRO) in CaTaO 2 N, confirming local cis N ordering of the anion sub-lattice. Our systematic exploration of a local structure across the A cation size series (from the larger Ba to the smaller Ca) reveals a perovskite motif increasingly distorted with respect to long-range average structures. DFT and AIMD simulations support the observed trends. Overall, structures with cis ordering of the nitrogen anions in each TaO 4 N 2 octahedron are favored over those with trans ordering. With diminishing A cation size, local cis ordering and Ta off-centering play decreasing roles in overall lattice stability, overshadowed by the stabilizing effects of octahedral tilting. The influence of these factors on local dipole formation and frustrated dipole ordering are discussed.

Synthesis, modular composition, and electrochemical properties of lamellar iron sulfides

Transition metal chalcogenides with layered structures are promising materials for energy storage, catalysis, and electronics, among other areas. We have identified a new layered phase of iron sulfide containing interlayer solvated cations. We present an optimized synthesis for the Li + -containing material from an Fe(III) xanthate complex. Structure and composition data indicate the material consists of poorly-ordered iron sulfide layers separated by solvated cations. The lamellar spacing in these materials can be tuned by changing the identity of the cation. Furthermore, the lamellar spacing can also be reversibly tuned by the degree of solvation of the material. The material is electrically conductive and can serve as a pseudocapacitor with comparable performance to commercial materials such as MnO 2 . Finally, these materials also show promise as lithium or sodium ion battery cathodes with good capacity and reversibility.

Discrete Open-Shell Tris(bipyridinium radical cationic) Inclusion Complexes in the Solid State

In the solid state the properties of organic radicals depend heavily on radical-radical interactions that are influenced by the superstructure of the crystalline phase. Here, we report the synthesis and characterization of a substituted tetracationic cyclophane, cyclobis(paraquat-p-1,4- dimethoxyphenylene), and outline how its bisradical dicationic redox state associates with the methyl viologen radical cation (MV •+ ) to give a trisradical tricationic inclusion complex. The (super)structures of the reduced cyclophane and this 1:1 complex in the solid-state deviate from the analogous (super)structures observed for the reduced state of cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene) and that of its trisradical tricationic complex. Titration experiments with a range of guests reveal that the methoxy substituents on the para-xylenyl do not influence significantly of the binding affinity of the cyclophane for small neutral guests, whereas the affinity decreases by an order of magnitude for larger radical cationic guests such as MV •+ . X-Ray diffraction reveals that the solid- state structures of the tricationic trisradical complexes to be a discrete entity with weak intermolecular orbital overlap between the neighboring complexes. Transient nutation EPR experiment and DFT calculations confirm that the complex has a doublet spin configuration in the ground state as a result of the strong orbital overlap within the complex, while the quartet-state spin configuration is higher in energy and so is inaccessible at ambient temperature. The superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) measurement reveals that trisradical tricationic complexes interact antiferromagnetically (J/k = - 2.33 K) and form a 1D Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain along the a-axis in the crystal. Furthermore, these results offer new insights into the design and synthesis of organic magnetic materials based on host-guest inclusion complexes.

Moderate pH changes alter the fluxes, selectivities and limiting currents in ion transport through polyelectrolyte multilayers deposited on membranes

Layer-by-layer (LBL) polyelectrolyte coatings on membranes are attractive for their high selectivities between monovalent and divalent ions. However, deposition of poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS)/protonated poly(allylamine) (PAH) films on ion-exchange membranes leads to low ion fluxes that restrict productivity or current efficiency. This study shows that increasing the solution pH from 6.5 to 8.3 enhances cation fluxes and limiting currents through (PAH/PSS) 5 PAH-coated cation-exchange membranes while still achieving order of magnitude selectivity increases compared to bare membranes. In Donnan dialysis through (PAH/PSS) 5 PAH-coated Nafion, at pH 8.3 the K + /Mg 2+ selectivity is 100, and the K + flux is 22 times that at pH 6.5. Moreover, at the higher pH the electrodialysis limiting current through these membranes increases ~5-fold. This enables electrodialysis separation of K + and Mg 2+ with a current efficiency around 0.75, a selectivity of 18, and 50% K + recovery from the source phase. Transmembrane potential measurements and increases in Cl - /SO 4 2- selectivities (from 9.5 at pH 6.5 to ~70 at pH 8.3) for porous alumina membranes coated with (PSS/PAH) 5 PSS films suggest that the coating becomes cation-permselective at higher pH. Increased cation transference numbers in polyelectrolyte coatings likely lead to the enhanced limiting currents for coated Nafion at higher pH. Lastly, (PAH/PSS) 5 PAH-coated Nafion shows a Li + /Mg 2+ Donnan dialysis selectivity >700 at neutral pH and a selectivity of 10 at pH 8.3. However, the Li + flux is 6 times greater at pH 8.3, which might make operation at the higher pH desirable.

Machine learning study of magnetism in uranium-based compounds

Actinide and lanthanide-based materials display exotic properties that originate from the presence of itinerant or localized f electrons and include unconventional superconductivity and magnetism, hidden order, and heavy-fermion behavior. Due to the strongly correlated nature of the 5f electrons, magnetic properties of these compounds depend sensitively on applied magnetic field and pressure, as well as on chemical doping. However, precise connection between the structure and magnetism in actinide-based materials is currently unclear. In this investigation, we established such structure-property links by assembling and mining two datasets that aggregate, respectively, the results of high-throughput density functional theory simulations and experimental measurements for the families of uranium- and neptunium-based binary compounds. Various regression algorithms were utilized to identify correlations among accessible attributes (features or descriptors) of the material systems and predict their cation magnetic moments and general forms of magnetic ordering. Descriptors representing compound structural parameters and cation f-subshell occupation numbers were identified as most important for accurate predictions. The best machine learning model developed employs the random forest regression algorithm. It can predict both spin and orbit moment size with root-mean-square error of 0.17 μ B and 0.19 μ B , respectively. Lastly, the random forest classification algorithm is used to predict the ordering (paramagnetic, ferromagnetic, and antiferromagnetic) of such systems with 76% accuracy.

Superselective Removal of Lead from Water by Two-Dimensional MoS 2 Nanosheets and Layer-Stacked Membranes

Point-of-use (POU) devices with satisfactory lead (Pb 2+ ) removal performance are urgently needed in response to recent outbreaks of lead contamination in drinking water. This study experimentally demonstrated the excellent lead removal capability of two-dimensional (2D) MoS 2 nanosheets in aqueous form and as part of a layer-stacked membrane. Among all materials ever reported in the literature, MoS 2 nanosheets exhibit the highest adsorption capacity (740 mg/g), and the strongest selectivity/affinity toward Pb 2+ with a distribution coefficient K d that is orders of magnitude higher than that of other lead adsorption materials (5.2 × 10 7 mL/g). Density functional theory (DFT) simulation was performed to complement experimental measurements and to help understand the adsorption mechanisms. The results confirmed that the cation selectivity of MoS 2 follows the order Pb 2+ > Cu 2+ >> Cd 2+ > Zn 2+ , Ni 2+ > Mg 2+ , K + , Ca 2+ . The membrane formed with layer-stacked MoS 2 nanosheets exhibited a high water flux (145 L/m 2 /h/bar), while effectively decreasing Pb 2+ concentration in drinking water from a few mg/L to less than 10 μg/L. The removal capacity of the MoS 2 membrane is a few orders of magnitude higher than that of other literature-reported membrane filters. Therefore, the layer-stacked MoS 2 membrane has great potential for POU removal of lead from drinking water.

Lead-Free Cs 4 CuSb 2 Cl 12 Layered Double Perovskite Nanocrystals

Concerns about the toxicity of lead-based perovskites have aroused great interest for the development of alternative lead-free perovskite-type materials. Recently, theoretical calculations predict that Pb 2+ cations can be substituted by a combination of Cu 2+ and Sb 3+ cations to form a vacancy-ordered layered double perovskite structure with superior optoelectronic properties. However, accessibilities to this class of perovskite-type materials remain inadequate, hindering their practical implementations in various applications. Here, we report the first colloidal synthesis of Cs 4 CuSb 2 Cl 12 perovskite-type nanocrystals (NCs). The resulting NCs exhibit a layered double perovskite structure with ordered vacancies and a direct bandgap of 1.79 eV. A composition-structure-property relationship has been established by investigating a series of Cs 4 Cu x Ag 2-2x Sb 2 Cl 12 perovskite-type NCs (0 ≤ x ≤ 1). The composition-induced crystal structure transformation, thus the electronic bandgap evolution has been explored by experimental observations and further confirmed by theoretical calculations. Taking advantages of both the unique electronic structure and solution processability, we demonstrate that the Cs 4 CuSb 2 Cl 12 NCs can be solution-processed as high-speed photodetectors with ultrafast photo-response and narrow bandwidth. We anticipate that our study will prompt future research to design and fabricate novel and high-performance lead-free perovskite-type NCs for a range of applications.

A polysulfide/ferricyanide redox flow battery with extended cycling

The inexpensive sulfur raw material is promising to enable cost-effective redox flow batteries for long duration energy storage. But the catastrophic through-membrane crossover of polysulfides remains a severe challenge resulting in irreversible performance degradation and short cycle life. In this work, we demonstrate that use of a permselective cation exchange membrane yields a two orders of magnitude enhancement in polysulfide retention compared to the benchmark Nafion membrane. Combined physico-chemical, spectroscopic, and microscopic analyses suggest more disordered sidechain structures, which lead to the more hydrophobic nature and smaller hydrophilic domains in the membrane. The microstructural features contribute to the effective mitigation of polysulfide crossover. As a result, the cycle life of polysulfide/ferricyanide flow cells is boosted over a substantially extended test time. This finding sheds light on the fundamental membrane factors that cause polysulfide permeation and can provide feasible directions in the development of permselective membranes for polysulfide flow batteries.

Structure of the electrical double layer at the ice–water interface

The surface of ice in contact with water contains sites that undergo deprotonation and protonation and can act as adsorption sites for aqueous ions. Therefore, an electrical double layer should form at this interface and existing models for describing the electrical double layer at metal oxide–water interfaces should be able to be modified to describe the surface charge, surface potential, and ionic occupancy at the ice–water interface. I used a surface complexation model along with literature measurements of the zeta potential of ice in brines of various strength and pH to constrain equilibrium constants. I then made predictions of ion site occupancy, surface charge density, and partitioning of counterions between the Stern and diffuse layers. The equilibrium constant for cation adsorption is more than 5 orders of magnitude larger than the other constants, indicating that this reaction dominates even at low salinity. Deprotonated OH sites are predicted to be slightly more abundant than dangling O sites, consistent with previous work. Surface charge densities are on the order of ±0.001 C/m2 and are always negative at the moderate pH values of interest to atmospheric and geophysical applications (6–9). In this pH range, over 99% of the counterions are contained in the Stern layer. This suggests that diffuse layer polarization will not occur because the ionic concentrations in the diffuse layer are nearly identical to those in the bulk electrolyte and that electrical conduction and polarization in the Stern layer will be negligible due to reduced ion mobility.

Toggling Stereochemical Activity through Interstitial Positioning of Cations between 2D V 2 O 5 Double Layers

The 5/6s 2 lone-pair electrons of p-block cations in their lower oxidation states are a versatile electronic and geometric structure motif that can underpin lattice anharmonicity and often engender electronic and structural instabilities that underpin the function of active elements in nonlinear optics, thermochromics, thermoelectrics, neuromorphic computing, and photocatalysis. In contrast to periodic solids where lone-pair-bearing cations are part of the structural framework, installing lone-pair-bearing cations in the interstitial sites of intercalation hosts provides a means of a systematically modulating electronic structure through the choice of the group and the period of the inserted cation while preserving the overall framework connectivity. The extent of stereochemical activity and the energy positioning of lone-pair-derived mid-gap states depend on the cation identity, stoichiometry, and strength of anion hybridization. V 2 O 5 polymorphs are versatile insertion hosts that can accommodate a broad range of s-, p-, and d-block cations. However, the insertion of lone-pair-bearing cations remains largely underexplored. In this article, we examine the implications of varying the 6s 2 cations situated in interlayer sites between condensed [V 4 O 10 ] n double layers. Systematic modulations of lattice distortions, electronic structure, and magnetic ordering are observed with increasing strength of stereochemical activity from group 12 to group 14 cations. We compare and contrast p-block-layered M x V 2 O 5 (M = Hg, Tl, and Pb) compounds and map the significance of local off-centering arising from the stereochemical activity of lone-pair cations to the emergence of filled antibonding lone-pair 6s 2 –O 2p-hybridized mid-gap states mediated by second-order Jahn–Teller distortions. Crystallographic studies of cation coordination environments and the resulting modulation of V–V interactions have been used in conjunction with variable-energy hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements, first-principles electronic structure calculations, and crystal orbital Hamilton population analyses to decipher the origins of stereochemical activity. Magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal antiferromagnetic signatures for all the three compounds. However, the differences in V–V interactions significantly affect the energy balance of the superexchange interactions, resulting in an ordering temperature of 160 and 260 K for Hg 0.5 V 2 O 5 and δ-Tl 0.5 V 2 O 5 , respectively, as compared to 7 K for δ-Pb 0.5 V 2 O 5 . In δ-Pb 0.5 V 2 O 5 , the strong stereochemical activity of electron lone pairs and the resulting electrostatic repulsions enforce superlattice ordering, which strongly modifies the electronic localization patterns along the [V 4 O 10 ] slabs, resulting in disrupted magnetic ordering and an anomalously low ordering temperature. The results demonstrate a versatile strategy for toggling the stereochemical activity of electron lone pairs to modify the electronic structure near the Fermi level and to mediate superexchange interactions.

Exotic Long-Range Surface Reconstruction on La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 Thin Films

Due to an extremely diverse phase space, La 1–x Sr x MnO 3 , as with other manganites, offers a wide range of tunability and applications including colossal magnetoresistance and use as spin-polarized electrodes. Here, we study an unprecedented, exotic surface reconstruction (6 × 6) in La 1–x Sr x MnO 3 (x = 0.3) observed via low-energy electron diffraction (LEED). Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) shows the surface is relatively flat, with unit-cell step heights, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) reveals a strong degree of Sr segregation at the surface. By combining electron diffraction and first-principles computations, we propose that the long-range surface reconstruction consists of a Sr-segregated surface with La (6 × 6) ordering. This study expands our understanding of manganite systems and underscores their ability to form interesting surface reconstructions, driven largely by cation segregation that can potentially be controlled for tuning surface ordering.

Understanding the Re-entrant Phase Transition in a Non-magnetic Scheelite

We report the stereochemical activity of lone pair electrons plays a central role in determining the structural and electronic properties of both chemically simple materials such as H 2 O, as well as more complex condensed phases such as photocatalysts or thermoelectrics. TlReO 4 is a rare example of a non-magnetic material exhibiting a re-entrant phase transition and emphanitic behavior in the long-range structure. Here, we describe the role of the Tl + 6s 2 lone pair electrons in these unusual phase transitions and illustrate its tunability by chemical doping, which has broad implications for functional materials containing lone pair bearing cations. First-principles density functional calculations clearly show the contribution of the Tl + 6s 2 in the valence band region. Local structure analysis, via neutron total scattering, revealed that changes in the long-range structure of TlReO 4 occur due to changes in the correlation length of the Tl + lone pairs. This has a significant effect on the anion interactions, with long-range ordered lone pairs creating a more densely packed structure. This resulted in a trade-off between anionic repulsions and lone pair correlations that lead to symmetry lowering upon heating in the long-range structure, whereby lattice expansion was necessary for the Tl + lone pairs to become highly correlated. Similarly, introducing lattice expansion through chemical pressure allowed long-range lone pair correlations to occur over a wider temperature range, demonstrating a method for tuning the energy landscape of lone pair containing functional materials.
