Machine learning surrogate for charged particle beam dynamics with space charge based on a recurrent neural network with aleatoric uncertainty

In this work, we develop a machine learning (ML) model with aleatoric uncertainty for the low energy beam transport (LEBT) region of the LANSCE linear accelerator in which we model the transport of a space-charge-dominated 750 keV proton beam through a lattice of 22 quadrupole magnets. Our ML model is developed based on data generated by a Kapchinsky–Vladimirsky (KV) envelope model of beam transport. We show that a recurrent neural network can be used as a dynamical surrogate model for fast prediction of the LEBT beam envelope. Furthermore, we endow the model with the prediction of aleatoric uncertainty and compare three different approaches. We demonstrate that the ML-based uncertainty quantification models are well calibrated and produce good estimates of the regions where the model is less certain about its predictions. This ML framework is a necessary step in the development of a real-time virtual diagnostic tool with uncertainty quantification that can be integrated into more complex downstream tasks (e.g., adaptive control or learning flexible control policies via reinforcement learning) for improved efficiency in beam operations. In future work, we plan to expand on this preliminary study by considering more realistic envelope models that include longitudinal momentum spread and dispersive effects in bending magnets, as well as particle tracking codes with 3D space charge (such as and ). Charge Radius of Neutron-Deficient Ni 54 and Symmetry Energy Constraints Using the Difference in Mirror Pair Charge Radii

he nuclear root-mean-square charge radius of Ni 54 was determined with collinear laser spectroscopy to be R ( Ni 54 ) = 3.737 ( 3 ) fm . In conjunction with the known radius of the mirror nucleus Fe 54 , the difference of the charge radii was extracted as Δ R ch = 0.049 ( 4 ) fm . Based on the correlation between Δ R ch and the slope of the symmetry energy at nuclear saturation density ( L ), we deduced 21 ≤ L ≤ 88 MeV . The present result is consistent with the L from the binary neutron star merger GW170817, favoring a soft neutron matter EOS, and barely consistent with the PREX-2 result within 1 σ error bands. Our result indicates the neutron-skin thickness of Ca 48 as 0.15–0.21 fm.

Spin-Charge-Lattice Coupling across the Charge Density Wave Transition in a Kagome Lattice Antiferromagnet

Understanding spin and lattice excitations in a metallic magnetic ordered system forms the basis to unveil the magnetic and lattice exchange couplings and their interactions with itinerant electrons. Kagome lattice antiferromagnet FeGe is interesting because it displays a rare charge density wave (CDW) deep inside the antiferromagnetic ordered phase that interacts with the magnetic order. Here, we use neutron scattering to study the evolution of spin and lattice excitations across the CDW transition 𝑇 CDW in FeGe. While spin excitations below ∼100 meV can be well described by spin waves of a spin-1 Heisenberg Hamiltonian, spin excitations at higher energies are centered around the Brillouin zone boundary and extend up to ∼180 meV consistent with quasiparticle excitations across spin-polarized electron-hole Fermi surfaces. Furthermore, 𝑐-axis spin wave dispersion and Fe-Ge optical phonon modes show a clear hardening below 𝑇 CDW due to spin-charge-lattice coupling but with no evidence of a phonon Kohn anomaly. By comparing our experimental results with density functional theory calculations in absolute units, we conclude that FeGe is a Hund’s metal in the intermediate correlated regime where magnetism has contributions from both itinerant and localized electrons arising from spin polarized electronic bands near the Fermi level.

Highly Resolved Projections of Passenger Electric Vehicle Charging Loads for the Contiguous United States: Results From and Methods Behind Bottom-Up Simulations of County-Specific Household Electric Vehicle Charging Load (Hourly 8760) Profiles Projected Through 2050 for Differentiated Household and Vehicle Types

This report documents enhancements made to the TEMPO (Transportation Energy & Mobility Pathway Options TM ) model to project spatially, demographically, and temporally resolved national-scale EV charging load profiles and describes three scenarios and corresponding datasets created for the NREL demand-side grid (dsgrid) project in support of bulk power systems modeling. In brief, TEMPO was enhanced to disaggregate national and annual energy demand projections into household and county-level projections of passenger electric vehicle (EV) hourly charging load profiles (8760 profiles), accounting for consumer, travel, and temperature variations that impact EV energy demand. In alignment with NREL's forward-looking grid modeling, three scenarios for EV adoption covering 2020-2050 were created-- Annual Energy Outlook (AEO) Reference Case, Electrification Futures Study (EFS) High Electrification, and All EV Sales by 2035 --and associated datasets have been included in the dsgrid platform for public use.

Surface Charge and Nanoparticle Chromophore Coupling to Achieve Fast Exciton Quenching and Efficient Charge Separation in Photoacoustic Imaging (PAI) and Photothermal therapy (PTT)

Abstract An organic semiconductor nanoparticle (OSN) with surface charge strategy is proposed, which displays excellent photothermal conversion performance. The donor–acceptor hybrid organic semiconductor Y6 is selected as a photothermal chromophore into nanoparticle by self‐assembly, which affords long wavelength absorption, sub‐bandgap emission, and high photon‐to‐thermal conversion. Y6 in OSN adopts closed packing comparing to that in single crystal. The surface charge in OSN causes super‐quenching of the photon excitons, which enhances the nonradiative transition to improve photothermal effect. Lower energy level electronic states are created, which breaks up the bandgap limit and leads to long wavelength emission over 1100 nm. Photothermal therapy and photoacoustic imaging are applied successfully, indicating the success of the new methodology in designing photothermal conversion materials.

Why Increased CdSeTe Charge Carrier Lifetimes and Radiative Efficiencies did not Result in Voltage Boost for CdTe Solar Cells

After a focused effort over the last decade, order-of-magnitude improvements in doping and electro-optical characteristics (radiative efficiency, carrier lifetime, and passivation) have been reported for polycrystalline CdSeTe solar cells. Surprisingly, this did not result in higher solar cell voltages regardless of device contacting layers, absorber grading profiles, and other changes in device architecture. From detailed evaluation of radiative emission and carrier dynamics in CdSeTe heterostructures and devices, it is shown that the complexity introduced to the absorber to achieve lifetime and passivation metrics resulted in charge carrier trapping, which now negatively affects CdSeTe absorbers.

Enabling AC electroluminescence in quasi-2D perovskites by uniformly arranging different-n-value nanoplates to allow bidirectional charge transport

Perovskite light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are normally operated under forward direct current (DC) to realize electron/hole injection at cathode/anode surfaces. In this work, we demonstrate an alternating current (AC) driven LED enabled by bi-directionally allowed charge transport in quasi-2D perovskite (PEA 2 MA n-1 PbnI 3n+1 ) film. Essentially, the bi-directional charge transport is realized by uniformly arranging different-n-value 2D nanoplates together with symmetrically designed anode/cathode interfaces, which can allow injected electrons and holes to form light-emitting states under both forward and reverse biases, leading to an AC electroluminescence (EL) with the device architecture of ITO/PEI/PEDOT:PSS/PEA 2 MA n-1 PbnI 3n+1 /P3HT/PEI/Ag. The high AC EL performance was achieved with the radiance = 24 W Sr -1 m -2 and 18.3 W Sr -1 m -2 and EQE = 12.5% and 3.7% under forward and reverse biases. Furthermore, the device-operational stability was largely improved with the half-intensity time of T 50 = 11.0 h under AC bias (+2 V/-2 V, 50 Hz) as compared to T 50 = 3.9 h under forward bias (+2 V/0 V, 50 Hz).

Influence of Rare-Earth Ion Radius on Metal–Metal Charge Transfer in Trinuclear Mixed-Valent Complexes

We report the synthesis and characterization of a highly conjugated bisferrocenyl pyrrolediimine ligand, Fc 2 PyrDIH (1), and its trinuclear complexes with rare earth ions—(Fc 2 PyrDI)M(N(TMS) 2 ) 2 (2-M, M = Sc, Y, Lu, La). Crystal structures, NMR spectra, and UV/Vis-NIR data are presented. The latter are in good agreement with DFT calculations, illuminating the impact of the rare earth ionic radius on NIR charge transfer excitations. For [2-Sc] + , the charge transfer is at 11500 cm -1 , while for [2-Y] + only a d-d transition at 8000 cm -1 is observed. Lu has an ionic radius in between Sc and Y, and the [2-Lu] + complex exhibits both transitions. From TDDFT analysis we assign the 11500 cm -1 transition as a mixture of MLCT and MMCT, rather than pure metal-to-metal CT, because it has significant ligand character. Typically, the ferrocenes have high rotational freedom in bis-ferrocenyl mixed valent complexes. However, in the present (Fc 2 PyrDI)M(N(TMS) 2 ) 2 complexes, ligand-ligand repulsions lock the rotational freedom, so that rare earth ionic radius-dependent geometric differences increasingly influence orbital overlap as the ionic radius falls. The Marcus-Hush coupling constant HAB trends as: [2-Sc] + >[2-Lu] + >[2-Y] +

Single-Molecule Charge Transport through Positively Charged Electrostatic Anchors

The charge transport in single-molecule junctions depends critically on the chemical identity of the anchor groups that are used to connect the molecular wires to the electrodes. In this research, we report a new anchoring strategy — called the electrostatic anchor here — formed through the efficient Coulombic interaction between the gold electrodes and the positively charged pyridinium terminal groups. Our results show that these pyridinium groups serve as efficient electrostatic anchors forming robust gold–molecule–gold junctions. Here, we have also observed binary switching in dicationic viologen molecular junctions, demonstrating an electron injection-induced redox switching in single-molecule junctions. We attribute the difference in low- and high conductance states to a dicationic ground state and a radical cationic metastable state, respectively. Overall, this anchoring strategy and redox switching mechanism could constitute the basis for a new class of redox-activated single-molecule switches.

Low-temperature and high-rate-charging lithium metal batteries enabled by an electrochemically active monolayer-regulated interface

Stable operation of rechargeable lithium (Li)-based batteries at low temperatures is vital for cold-climate applications but is plagued with dendritic Li plating and unstable solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI). Here we report high-performance Li-metal batteries under low-temperature and high-rate-charging conditions. This is realized by utilizing a self-assembled monolayer of electrochemically active molecules on current collectors that regulates the nanostructure and composition of SEI and deposition morphology of Li metal anodes. A multilayer SEI containing a LiF-rich inner phase and amorphous outer layer effectively seals the Li surface in contrast to the conventional impassive SEI at low temperatures. As a result, galvanic Li corrosion and self-discharge were suppressed; stable Li deposition was realized from -60º to 45ºC; and a Li|LiCoO 2 cell with a capacity of 2.0 mAh cm -2 displayed a 200-cycle life at -15ºC with a recharge time of 45 minutes.

Softening by charging: how collective modes of ionic association in concentrated redoxmer/electrolyte solutions define the structural and dynamic properties in different states of charge

Understanding the physical and chemical processes occurring in concentrated electrolyte solutions is required to achieve redox flow batteries with high energy density. Highly concentrated electrolyte solutions are often studied in which collective crowded interactions between molecules and ions become predominant. In this work, experimental and computational methods were used to examine non-aqueous electrolyte solutions in two different states of charge as a function of redoxmer concentration. As the latter increases and the ionic association strengthens, the electric conductivity passes through a maximum and the solution increasingly gels, which is seen through a rapid non-linear increase in viscosity. We establish that the structural rigidity of ionic networks is closely connected with this loss of fluidity and show that charging generally yields softer ionic assemblies with weaker attractive forces and improved dynamical properties.

Measurement of muon neutrino induced charged current interactions without charged pions in the final state using a new T2K off-axis near detector WAGASCI-BabyMIND

We report a flux-integrated cross section measurement of muon neutrino interactions on water and hydrocarbon via charged current reactions without charged pions in the final state with the WAGASCI-BabyMIND detector, which was installed in the T2K near detector hall in 2018. The detector is located 1.5° off-axis and is exposed to a more energetic neutrino flux than ND280, another T2K near detector, which is located at a different off-axis position. The total flux-integrated cross section is measured to be 1.26 ± 0.18⁢(stat+syst) × 10 −39 cm 2 /nucleon on CH and 1.44 ± 0.21⁢(stat+syst) × 10 −39 cm 2 /nucleon on H 2 ⁡O. These results are compared to model predictions provided by the neut v5.3.2 and genie v2.8.0 Monte Carlo generators and the measurements are compatible with these models. Differential cross sections in muon momentum and cosine of the muon scattering angle are also reported. This is the first such measurement reported with the WAGASCI-BabyMIND detector and utilizes the 2020 and 2021 datasets.

Measurement of Charged-Pion Production in Deep-Inelastic Scattering off Nuclei with the CLAS Detector

Background: Energetic quarks in nuclear deep-inelastic scattering propagate through the nuclear medium. Processes that are believed to occur inside nuclei include quark energy loss through medium-stimulated gluon bremsstrahlung and intranuclear interactions of forming hadrons. More data are required to gain a more complete understanding of these effects. Purpose: To test the theoretical models of parton transport and hadron formation, we compared their predictions for the nuclear and kinematic dependence of pion production in nuclei. Methods: We have measured charged-pion production in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering off D, C, Fe, and Pb using the CLAS detector and the CEBAF 5.014-GeV electron beam. We report results on the nuclear-to-deuterium multiplicity ratio for π + and π - as a function of energy transfer, four-momentum transfer, and pion energy fraction or transverse momentum—the first three-dimensional study of its kind. Results: The π + multiplicity ratio is found to depend strongly on the pion fractional energy z and reaches minimum values of 0.67 ± 0.03, 0.43 ± 0.02, and 0.27 ± 0.01 for the C, Fe, and Pb targets, respectively. The z dependencies of the multiplicity ratios for π + and π - are equal within uncertainties for C and Fe targets but show differences at the level of 10% for the Pb-target data. The results are qualitatively described by the GIBUU transport model, as well as with a model based on hadron absorption, but are in tension with calculations based on nuclear fragmentation functions. Conclusions: These precise results will strongly constrain the kinematic and flavor dependence of nuclear effects in hadron production, probing an unexplored kinematic region. They will help to reveal how the nucleus reacts to a fast quark, thereby shedding light on its color structure and transport properties and on the mechanisms of the hadronization process.
