Four-dimensional modulation and coding: An alternate to frequency-reuse

Four dimensional modulation as a means of improving communication efficiency on the band-limited Gaussian channel, with the four dimensions of signal space constituted by phase orthogonal carriers (cos omega sub c t and sin omega sub c t) simultaneously on space orthogonal electromagnetic waves are discussed. "Frequency reuse' techniques use such polarization orthogonality to reuse the same frequency slot, but the modulation is not treated as four dimensional, rather a product of two-d modulations, e.g., QPSK. It is well known that, higher dimensionality signalling affords possible improvements in the power bandwidth sense. Four-D modulations based upon subsets of lattice-packings in four-D, which afford simplification of encoding and decoding are described. Sets of up to 1024 signals are constructed in four-D, providing a (Nyquist) spectral efficiency of up to 10 bps/Hz. Energy gains over the reuse technique are in the one to three dB range t equal bandwidth.

An 8-PSK TDMA uplink modulation and coding system

The combination of 8-phase shift keying (8PSK) modulation and greater than 2 bits/sec/Hz drove the design of the Nyquist filter to one specified to have a rolloff factor of 0.2. This filter when built and tested was found to produce too much intersymbol interference and was abandoned for a design with a rolloff factor of 0.4. The preamble is limited to 100 bit periods of the uncoded bit period of 5 ns for a maximum preamble length of 500 ns or 40 8PSK symbol times at 12.5 ns per symbol. For 8PSK modulation, the required maximum degradation of 1 dB in -20 dB cochannel interference (CCI) drove the requirement for forward error correction coding. In this contract, the funding was not sufficient to develop the proposed codec so the codec was limited to a paper design during the preliminary design phase. The mechanization of the demodulator is digital, starting from the output of the analog to digital converters which quantize the outputs of the quadrature phase detectors. This approach is amenable to an application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) replacement in the next phase of development.

Using GPS Receiver 1PPS Output to Verify Time Stamp Accuracy and Measure Propagation Delay

A simple pulse overlay circuit using a logic OR gate was developed to overlay a precise leading edge 1 pulse per second time reference marker from a global positioning system receiver onto a non-return -to- zero-level pulse code modulation telemetry data stream to validate time stamp accuracy and measure propagation delay in telemetry equipment. A pulse overlay (PO) circuit was designed to produce a time reference marker within a pulse code modulation (PCM) telemetry data stream that was recorded and analyzed to validate an IRIG Standard 106-17 Chapter 10 recorder’s time stamp accuracy [1]. A manufacturer of a newly purchased Chapter 10 recorder claimed the time stamp accuracy to be better than 10 microseconds (μs) with only IRIG-B120 (IRIG-B) input and better than 1 μs with IRIG-B and one pulse per second (1PPS) inputs. The PO circuit and a Chapter 10 recorder test setup were used to verify the vendor’s data-time synchronization claims and to justify infrastructure upgrade costs to connect additional cables to each purchased recorder. The circuit was also used to measure the propagation delay (PD) of a long distance Telemetry multiplexer/demultiplexer telecommunication system which the manufacturer did not provide a PD specification. Using the one pulse per second time reference marker of the global positioning system receiver and the pulse overlay circuit to overlay the one pulse per second variable pulse width signal into a pulse code modulation telemetry stream provided an excellent means to validate time stamp accuracy within a Chapter 10 recorder and to measure propagation delays within a normal telemetry operating environment. The positive results from the Chapter 10 recorder tests validated the vendor’s claims and justified the implementation to add the one pulse per second signal to the range Chapter 10 recorders. The pulse overlay circuit and test setups defined in this paper can easily be used to measure other telemetry equipment.

Two carrier communication system with single transmitter

A pulse code modulated communication system is disclosed for transmitting two subcarrier modulated carriers from a single transmitter comprising two channels for phase modulating the two carriers independently. The modulating subcarriers are independently modulated by data and/or pseudonoise (PN) codes as desired. The modulated carriers are switched alternately to the single transmitter in synchronism with operation of a PN code generator when PN code modulation is present, as for ranging.

Frequency-Accommodating Manchester Decoder

No adjustment necessary to cover a 10:1 frequency range. Decoding circuit converts biphase-level pulse-code modulation to nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ)-level pulse-code modulation plus clock signal. Circuit accommodates input data rate of 50 to 500 kb/s. Tracks gradual changes in rate automatically, eliminating need for extra circuits and manual switching to adjust to different rates.

CoNNeCT Baseband Processor Module Boot Code SoftWare (BCSW)

This software provides essential startup and initialization routines for the CoNNeCT baseband processor module (BPM) hardware upon power-up. A command and data handling (C&DH) interface is provided via 1553 and diagnostic serial interfaces to invoke operational, reconfiguration, and test commands within the code. The BCSW has features unique to the hardware it is responsible for managing. In this case, the CoNNeCT BPM is configured with an updated CPU (Atmel AT697 SPARC processor) and a unique set of memory and I/O peripherals that require customized software to operate. These features include configuration of new AT697 registers, interfacing to a new HouseKeeper with a flash controller interface, a new dual Xilinx configuration/scrub interface, and an updated 1553 remote terminal (RT) core. The BCSW is intended to provide a "safe" mode for the BPM when initially powered on or when an unexpected trap occurs, causing the processor to reset. The BCSW allows the 1553 bus controller in the spacecraft or payload controller to operate the BPM over 1553 to upload code; upload Xilinx bit files; perform rudimentary tests; read, write, and copy the non-volatile flash memory; and configure the Xilinx interface. Commands also exist over 1553 to cause the CPU to jump or call a specified address to begin execution of user-supplied code. This may be in the form of a real-time operating system, test routine, or specific application code to run on the BPM.

Parallel-Processing CMOS Circuitry for M-QAM and 8PSK TCM

There has been some additional development of parts reported in "Multi-Modulator for Bandwidth-Efficient Communication" (NPO-40807), NASA Tech Briefs, Vol. 32, No. 6 (June 2009), page 34. The focus was on 1) The generation of M-order quadrature amplitude modulation (M-QAM) and octonary-phase-shift-keying, trellis-coded modulation (8PSK TCM), 2) The use of square-root raised-cosine pulse-shaping filters, 3) A parallel-processing architecture that enables low-speed [complementary metal oxide/semiconductor (CMOS)] circuitry to perform the coding, modulation, and pulse-shaping computations at a high rate; and 4) Implementation of the architecture in a CMOS field-programmable gate array.
