Modification of the Jet Energy-Energy Correlator in Cold Nuclear Matter

We compute medium corrections to the energy-energy correlator (EEC) for jets in electron-nucleus collisions at leading order in the QCD coupling and the interaction of the jet with the medium. We derive an analytical expression for the modification of the EEC as a function of the opening angle and show that the modification is strongest at large angles within the jet cone. We obtain explicit results for the dependence of the modification on the jet energy, the scattering power of cold nuclear matter, and the path length within the medium. We extend our calculations to gluon jets in proton-nucleus collisions and compare our results with recent preliminary data for proton-lead collisions at the LHC. Here, we also discuss the role of comovers on the EEC in p + Pb collisions.

Cyber-Physical Simulation of the Cold Startup of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell – Gas Turbine (SOFC-GT) Hybrid Systems

This work introduces experimental studies for the cold startup process (CPS) of the SOFC-GT hybrid system using the cyber-physical simulation approach. The physical gas turbine is coupled with a cyber-physical SOFC stack, which is represented using the integration of a real time dynamic SOFC model with physical components (e.g., pressure chamber, natural gas burner, etc.). Different ramp rates of the turbine speed were tested out during the startup processes. Bypass valves were also used to manipulate the airflow during SOFC-GT hybrid system start-up process. Different ramp rates enable the rapid start-up of the turbine to avoid surge and stall, meanwhile enable acceptable warm rate of the fuel cell stack without damaging the cell material. CPS can enable dynamic characterizations of highly integrated systems at lower cost.

Understanding aerosol–cloud interactions using a single-column model for a cold-air outbreak case during the ACTIVATE campaign

Marine boundary layer clouds play a critical role in Earth's energy balance. Their microphysical and radiative properties are highly impacted by ambient aerosols and dynamic forcings. In this study, we evaluate the representation of these clouds and related aerosol–cloud interaction processes in the single-column version of the E3SM climate model (SCM) against field measurements collected during the NASA ACTIVATE campaign over the western North Atlantic, as well as intercompare results with high-resolution process level models. We show that E3SM SCM reproduces the macrophysical properties of post-frontal boundary layer clouds in a cold-air outbreak (CAO) case well. However, it generates fewer but larger cloud droplets compared to aircraft measurements. Further sensitivity tests show that the underestimation of both aerosol number concentration and vertical velocity variance contributes to this bias. Aerosol–cloud interactions are examined by perturbing prescribed aerosol properties in E3SM SCM with fixed dynamics. Higher aerosol number concentration or hygroscopicity leads to more numerous but smaller cloud droplets, resulting in a stronger cooling via shortwave cloud forcing. This apparent Twomey effect is consistent with prior climate model studies. The cloud liquid water path shows a weakly positive relation with cloud droplet number concentration due to precipitation suppression. This weak aerosol effect on cloud macrophysics may be attributed to the dominant impact of strong dynamical forcing associated with the CAO. Our findings indicate that the SCM framework is a key tool to bridge the gap between climate models, process level models, and field observations to facilitate process level understanding.

Rational Electrolyte Formulation for Sodium Metal Batteries Operating in Extremely Cold Environments

Sodium metal batteries have shown considerable potential when operated at ambient temperatures. However, their performance in cold environments is constrained by increased electrolyte resistance with decreasing temperature and dendritic sodium plating associated with unstable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), which are primarily influenced by the electrolyte composition. In this study, we present an electrolyte formulation that remains thermally stable down to −150 °C, which not only facilitates low internal resistance but also contributes to the formation of a protective SEI under cryogenic conditions. When cycled at −40 °C at 1 mA cm −2 , the sodium metal electrode exhibits a low overpotential of only 16 mV over 750 h; even at an ultra-low temperature of −80 °C, the electrode demonstrates remarkable long-term stability with a low overpotential of 54 mV sustained over 1500 h at 0.5 mA cm −2 . Furthermore, full cell evaluations when paring with Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 cathode reveal a high average Coulombic efficiency exceeding 99.1% and a capacity retention over 83% after 100 cycles at both −40 °C and −80 °C.

Cold Climate Field Study of the Effect of Defrost Controls on the Integrated Performance of a Ductless Air-Source Heat Pump

Residential heat pumps have advanced over the past decade to allow for operation at colder temperatures. However, the challenges of frost accumulation and defrosting the outdoor coil remain. The goal of this study was to evaluate the impact of the control algorithms that determine when a heat pump needs to defrost and when the base pan heater runs on the overall heating efficiency of the heat pump. In this study, which occurred during the 2023–2024 heating season, we measured the performance of a ductless air-source heat pump installed in Fairbanks, Alaska, USA. The heat pump was instrumented to measure the electrical input and the thermal output, as well as selected internal variables and indoor and outdoor environmental conditions. The heat pump was first operated with factory default control algorithms associated with the initiation of defrost and control of the base pan heater. These factory default algorithms focused on aggressively defrosting the outdoor coil and keeping the base pan ice-free. In the middle of the winter, these algorithms were changed to focus on reducing defrost cycles and increasing efficiency, while the heat pump continued to be operated and monitored. The results showed that significant increases in efficiency are possible by improving the defrost and base pan heater control algorithms.

Ductless Heat Pump Energy Monitoring in a Cold Climate

In 2018, the City and Borough of Juneau, Alaska set the goal of reaching 80% renewable energy for heating and transportation by 2045. An important factor to help reach this goal is finding energy efficiency home heating technologies such as ductless air source heat pumps (DHPs), which rely on the local hydropower electric grid to provide space heating for an entire home or a main living area. To help residents reduce energy costs and move toward the community renewable energy goal, a team of local, state, and national partners joined to run Thermalize Juneau 2021, an energy campaign that provided education, a simplified installation process, and a bulk purchase discount. Overall, the campaign enrolled 165 participants, resulting in 75 DHP installations and over 30 energy efficiency improvements. To evaluate the reliability and energy use of the DHPs installed during the Thermalize Juneau campaign, researchers installed energy monitors on heat pumps of 14 participants and conducted interviews with homeowners. Data from two heating seasons (2021-2022 and 2022-2023) has allowed researchers to examine the accuracy of pre-campaign energy savings predictions, establish energy savings for a small group of households, and provide insights on the energy use and occupant satisfaction of DHPs which will help to inform future heat pump deployment efforts in the area.
