Radium Dial Workers: Back to the Future

This report reviews the history of the radium dial workers in the United States, summarizes the scientific progress made since the last evaluation in the early 1990s, and discusses current progress in updating the epidemiologic cohort and applying new dosimetric models for radiation risk assessment. The discoveries of radiation and radioactivity led quickly to medical and commercial applications at the turn of the 20th century, including the development of radioluminescent paint, made by combining radium with phosphorescent material and adhesive. Workers involved with the painting of dials and instruments included painters, handlers, ancillary workers, and chemists who fabricated the paint. Dial painters were primarily women and, prior to the mid to late 1920s, would use their lips to give the brush a fine point, resulting in high intakes of radium. The tragic experience of the dial painters had a significant impact on industrial safety standards, including protection measures taken during the Manhattan Project. The dial workers study has formed the basis for radiation protection standards for intakes of radionuclides by workers and the public. The mortality experience of 3,276 radium dial painters and handlers employed between 1913-1949 is being determined through 2019. The last epidemiologic follow-up was 30 years ago when most of these workers were still alive. Nearly 65% were born before 1920, 37.5% were teenagers when first hired, and nearly 50% were hired before 1930 when the habit of placing brushes in mouths essentially stopped. Comprehensive dose reconstruction techniques are being applied to estimate organ doses for each worker related to the intake of 226Ra, 228Ra, and associated photon exposures. Time dependent dose-response analyses will estimate lifetime risks for specific causes of death. The study of radium dial workers is part of the Million Person Study of low-dose health effects that is designed to evaluate radiation risks among healthy American workers and veterans. Despite being one of the most important and influential radiation effects studies ever conducted, shifting programmatic responsibilities and declining funding led to the termination of the radium program of studies in the early 1990s. Renewed interest and opportunity have arisen. With scientific progress made in dosimetric methodology and models, the ability to perform a study over the entire life span, and the potential applicability to other scenarios such as medicine, environmental contamination and space exploration, the radium dial workers have once again come to the forefront.

Century: Zap Energy’s 100-kW-Scale Repetitive Sheared-Flow-Stabilized Z -Pinch System with Liquid Metal Cooling

Zap Energy is developing the sheared-flow-stabilized (SFS) Z-pinch concept for commercial applications. The SFS Z pinch relies on plasma self-organization, in the sense that plasma dynamics play a critical role in confinement. Using plasma axial current for confinement and compression eliminates the need for external confinement or heating technologies. This compact magnetic confinement technology could, in turn, provide the basis for a cost-effective deuterium-tritium fusion power plant. In addition to a robust experimental program pushing plasma performance towards breakeven conditions, Zap Energy has parallel programs developing power handling systems suitable for future power plants. Technologies under development include high average-power repetitive pulsed power, high duty-cycle cathodes, and liquid metal wall systems. Century is the name of Zap Energy’s first effort to integrate these three components into an operational system capable of firing non-reacting hydrogen SFS Z-pinch plasmas into a liquid-metal-lined container at sustained repetition rates on the order of 0.1 Hz. Here, the pulsed power driver and liquid metal heat exchanger are both designed to sustain input powers of 100 kW. Construction and initial operations with an interim ~10 kW liquid metal heat exchanger are described.

Data-Driven Digital Twin for Reliability Assessment of DC/DC Buck Converter

In commercial applications, the operation of DC/DC converters significantly impacts overall system performance and long-term reliability. This study introduces a data-driven digital twin (DT) approach for estimating critical degradation parameters of DC/DC BUCK converter under steady-state condition. Initially, a circuit-level MATLAB/Simulink digital model (DM C ) is refined against a hardware prototype’s switching model dataset using offline particle swarm optimization. The optimized digital model’s steady-state response is then verified with its average model response while varying the duty and load. Subsequently, degradation profiles are imposed on the inductor, capacitor, MOSFET in the DMC. A large dataset is generated from this model, allowing training, validation, and testing of machine learning (ML) models for component health regression tasks. The proposed method employs random forest ML models, achieving impressive regression results with a squared R value as high as 0.99978 and a root mean square error of 4.2× 10 –6 . The method is further validated on a medium power level DC/DC BUCK prototype with varying load conditions, and includes the analysis of MOSFET’s on-resistance under degradation conditions. This data-driven DT method shows promise for identifying parasitic degradation and ohmic loss parameters, enhancing converter reliability assessments in a non-invasive, generalized, and computationally efficient manner.

A Framework to Evaluate the Grid Impacts of EV Fleet Charging Solutions

Growing Electric vehicle (EV) adoption in residential and commercial applications is driving the need for the charging infrastructures required to fulfill the charging needs. The resulting increase in demand for electric power will add a significant load to the electric grid, which could negatively impact the grid operation. EVs are power electronic loads and draw harmonic currents which can lead to a host of power quality issues. Therefore, it is crucial to assess the grid impacts and management of EV charging loads to ensure the reliable operation of the electric grid. In this paper, we develop a framework to help determine power-quality impacts given an EV charging schedule on the system. We compare the performance of unmanaged and managed charging solutions on factors like voltage drop, flicker, harmonic distortion and the peak site load - based on the EV depot in Hazelwood school district. The results allow insights into operation and site design of EV depots.

FPV Video Adaptation for UAV Collision Avoidance

First person view (FPV) technology for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) provides an immersive experience for pilots and enables various personal and commercial applications such as aerial photography, drone racing, search and rescue operations, agricultural surveillance, and structural inspection. While real time video streaming from a UAV and vision-based collision avoidance strategies have been studied in literature as separate topics, in this paper we tackle collision avoidance in FPV scenarios, taking into account network delays and real time video parameters. We present a theoretical model for obstacle collisions that considers the current communication channel conditions, the real time video parameters, and the UAV's position relative to the closest obstacle. A video adaptation algorithm is then designed, using this metric, to tune the FPV video resolution, number of re-transmission attempts, and the modulation scheme to maximize the probability of avoiding collisions. This algorithm also takes into account specific latency constraints of the application. This video algorithm was evaluated in various scenarios and its ability to respond to both distances to the obstacle as well as the communication channel conditions was demonstrated. It was found that, for the considered scenarios, the performance of the proposed adaptive algorithm was, on an average, 58.63% higher than the closest non-adaptive one in terms of maximizing the probability of avoiding collision. Such collision avoidance strategies could be used to make UAV FPV applications safer and more reliable.

Sensitivity analysis of the technical and economic feasibility of converter-interfaced CHP System

The adoption of small-to-medium sized (1MW~20MW) combined heat and power (CHP) system is lagging, especially in industrial and commercial applications. Our prior research has proved that interfacing CHP with grid-ready converters can increase its economic value and technical benefits; this paper is focused on investigating the critical parameters impacting profitability of converter-interfaced CHP, including CHP sizing scenario, energy price, generator cost, converter cost, voltage support price, converter to engine size ratio and interconnection delay. An automatic toolkit for evaluating CHP return on investment (ROI) is developed to enhance the computation capability and efficiency. Based on varying the value of critical parameters, 975 use cases are analyzed. Results show that the profitability of converter-interfaced CHP over directly-coupled CHP is more sensitive to energy price, delays in interconnection process, converter cost and much less to generator cost or voltage support price.

Statistical generic design of glass and optimization: Selective review on oxide glasses

Designing a single glass composition for a multidimensional property space is challenging, and the difficulty increases with the number of design criteria. Traditionally, the task is accomplished using multiple statistical models that describe the relationships between composition (C) and property (P) values, i.e., C-P models. Recently, the structure (S)-property (P) statistical modeling has emerged as a complementary approach. The S-P modeling approach has also been shown to be a preferred method for modeling glass properties, particularly when a small data set is available, such as in single-component studies, or when strong nonlinearities exist between composition and properties. The combined model package, C-S-P, implements the concept of generic glass design, i.e., designing glass for performance by first selecting a specific or optimized set of glass network structural groups using S-P models and then transferring the designed structures (genes) to a particular composition using C-S models. This article reviews a set of supporting cases from the previous C-S-P modeling studies of phosphate, silicate, and borosilicate glasses, which are relevant for many critical commercial applications. The methodology for developing the statistical C-S-P database is presented, enabling the application of P?S?C to achieve a generic glass design and optimization, targeting multiple design criteria for both performance and processing properties simultaneously.

Effect of relative humidity on the interlayer spacing of phosphate intercalated Mg, Al layered double hydroxide (hydrotalcite‐like) crystals

Abstract The availability of water and the type of interlayer anions present affect the arrangement and interlayer spacing of layered double hydroxide (LDH). A systematic study of the effect of relative humidity (RH) on the basal spacing of phosphate intercalated, magnesium aluminum LDHs (MgAl–PO 4 LDH) was conducted, confirming that MgAl‐PO 4 LDH exhibit distinct interlayer spacing corresponding to separate low‐ and high‐hydration states produced when exposed to low and high humidity conditions. The transition from the low‐ to high‐hydration form begins when RH exceeds 33% and is accompanied by the transition from one to two interlayers of water. An improved understanding of the effect of RH on MgAl–PO 4 LDHs will enable more accurate atomistic modeling and experimental characterization of MgAl–PO 4 LDHs and may lead to improvements in the tunability of MgAl‐PO 4 LDHs for commercial applications such as slow‐release fertilizer.

Engineered Escherichia coli platforms for tyrosine-derivative production from phenylalanine using phenylalanine hydroxylase and tetrahydrobiopterin-regeneration system

Aromatic compounds derived from tyrosine are important and diverse chemicals that have industrial and commercial applications. Although these aromatic compounds can be obtained by extraction from natural producers, their growth is slow, and their content is low. To overcome these problems, many of them have been chemically synthesized from petroleum-based feedstocks. However, because of the environmental burden and depleting availability of feedstock, microbial cell factories are attracting much attention as sustainable and environmentally friendly processes. To facilitate development of microbial cell factories for producing tyrosine derivatives, we developed simple and convenient tyrosine-producing Escherichia coli platforms with a bacterial phenylalanine hydroxylase, which converted phenylalanine to tyrosine with tetrahydromonapterin as a cofactor, using a synthetic biology approach. By introducing a tetrahydrobiopterin-regeneration system, the tyrosine titer of the plasmid-based engineered strain was 4.63 g/L in a medium supplemented with 5.00 g/L phenylalanine with a test tube. The strains were successfully used to produce industrially attractive compounds, such as tyrosol with a yield of 1.58 g/L by installing a tyrosol-producing module consisting of genes encoding tyrosine decarboxylase and tyramine oxidase on a plasmid. Gene integration into E. coli chromosomes has an advantage over the use of plasmids because it increases genetic stability without antibiotic feeding to the culture media and enables more flexible pathway engineering by accepting more plasmids with artificial pathway genes. Therefore, we constructed a plasmid-free tyrosine-producing platform by integrating five modules, comprising genes encoding the phenylalanine hydroxylase and tetrahydrobiopterin-regeneration system, into the chromosome. The platform strain could produce 1.04 g/L of 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine, a drug medicine, by installing a gene encoding tyrosine hydroxylase and the tetrahydrobiopterin-regeneration system on a plasmid. Moreover, by installing the tyrosol-producing module, tyrosol was produced with a yield of 1.28 g/L. We developed novel E. coli platforms for producing tyrosine from phenylalanine at multi-gram-per-liter levels in test-tube cultivation. The platforms allowed development and evaluation of microbial cell factories installing various designed tyrosine-derivative biosynthetic pathways at multi-grams-per-liter levels in test tubes.

Ethanol tolerance in engineered strains of Clostridium thermocellum

Abstract Clostridium thermocellum is a natively cellulolytic bacterium that is promising candidate for cellulosic biofuel production, and can produce ethanol at high yields (75–80% of theoretical) but the ethanol titers produced thus far are too low for commercial application. In several strains of C. thermocellum engineered for increased ethanol yield, ethanol titer seems to be limited by ethanol tolerance. Previous work to improve ethanol tolerance has focused on the WT organism. In this work, we focused on understanding ethanol tolerance in several engineered strains of C. thermocellum . We observed a tradeoff between ethanol tolerance and production. Adaptation for increased ethanol tolerance decreases ethanol production. Second, we observed a consistent genetic response to ethanol stress involving mutations at the AdhE locus. These mutations typically reduced NADH-linked ADH activity. About half of the ethanol tolerance phenotype could be attributed to the elimination of NADH-linked activity based on a targeted deletion of adhE . Finally, we observed that rich growth medium increases ethanol tolerance, but this effect is eliminated in an adhE deletion strain. Together, these suggest that ethanol inhibits growth and metabolism via a redox-imbalance mechanism. The improved understanding of mechanisms of ethanol tolerance described here lays a foundation for developing strains of C. thermocellum with improved ethanol production.

Tailored approach to study Legionella infection using a lattice light sheet microscope (LLSM)

Legionella is a genus of ubiquitous environmental pathogens found in freshwater systems, moist soil, and composted materials. More than four decades of Legionella research has provided important insights into Legionella pathogenesis. Although standard commercial microscopes have led to significant advances in understanding Legionella pathogenesis, great potential exists in the deployment of more advanced imaging techniques to provide additional insights. The lattice light sheet microscope (LLSM) is a recently developed microscope for 4D live cell imaging with high resolution and minimum photo-damage. We built a LLSM with an improved version for the optical layout with two path-stretching mirror sets and a novel reconfigurable galvanometer scanner ( RGS ) module to improve the reproducibility and reliability of the alignment and maintenance of the LLSM. We commissioned this LLSM to study Legionella pneumophila infection with a tailored workflow designed over instrumentation, experiments, and data processing methods. Our results indicate that Legionella pneumophila infection is correlated with a series of morphological signatures such as smoothness, migration pattern and polarity both statistically and dynamically. Our work demonstrates the benefits of using LLSM for studying long-term questions in bacterial infection. Our free-for-use modifications and workflow designs on the use of LLSM system contributes to the adoption and promotion of the state-of-the-art LLSM technology for both academic and commercial applications.

Recent developments on polymeric membranes for CO 2 capture from flue gas

Polymeric membranes have been widely considered as one of the next-generation technologies for CO 2 capture from fossil fuel-derived flue gases. This separation modality requires novel polymeric materials that possess efficient CO 2 /N 2 separation properties, as well as chemical and mechanical stability for a multiyear membrane lifetime. In this paper, recent developments in polymeric membranes tailored for post-combustion carbon capture are reviewed. The selected polymeric materials encompass ether oxygen-rich polymers, polynorbornenes, ionic liquid membranes, and facilitated transport membranes. In each of the selected materials, noteworthy research efforts for material design and membrane formation are highlighted. The performances of the selected materials are compared in the CO 2 /N 2 selectivity-CO 2 permeance plot. As the only class of materials reviewed herein that have demonstrated the fabrication of thin-film composite membranes in scale, facilitated transport membranes have shown both high selectivity and permeance at relevant conditions for post-combustion carbon capture. Finally, comprehensive field tests are needed to resolve the technical gap between the material development and the commercial application.

Fully Recyclable Advanced Composites with Reduced Cure Times for Improved Manufacturing Efficiency

At Cyclotron Road, the participant team from Mallinda focused its research efforts on developing its Polyimine chemistry for commercial applications. The value-differentiating characteristics of the technology are predicated on the chemical reversibility of the system which opens the door for a number of industrial applications. In short, the company’s technology is a highly crosslinked thermoset polymer network that can exchange covalent bonds within the polymer matrix when the polymer is heated to the glass transition temperature of the material. This leads to a resin system that can alternate between rigid and semi-rigid states; allowing for compression molding, and surface welding of thermosetting composite materials made with polyimine polymers. This research project worked towards improving the thermal properties of its resin from 80 °C to over 260 °C. The improved properties of Mallinda’s resin unlocks development potential within the automotive and aerospace markets where advance composite materials require stringent performance requirements and elevated operating temperatures.
