A systematic analytical framework for multi-source municipal solid waste characterization for energy recovery

Advancing municipal solid waste (MSW) management from disposal-oriented practices toward circular, value-driven systems requires standardized methodologies capable of identifying material composition and resource recoverable potential at the point of generation. Despite extensive research, MSW characterization remains fragmented due to inconsistences in sampling methodologies, waste sorting categories, and temporal coverage across previous studies which limit cross-site comparability, reproducibility, and constrain the reliable evaluation of potential resource recovery pathways. This lack of consistency has hindered the development of a unified framework for MSW characterization and resource assessment. This study introduces a standardized, field-validated protocol for MSW sampling and composition analysis that ensures consistent, traceable data across diverse waste sources. The protocol integrates randomized spatial sampling, systematic material sorting, and controlled subsampling for multi-site and multi-season field campaigns. Validation included MSW collection from residential, grocery, restaurant, and school MSW streams across five U.S. states, including Maryland, Idaho, Virginia, Ohio, and Mississippi, to demonstrate the protocol’s ability to identify source-based composition patterns relevant to resource recovery applications. Grocery and restaurant streams were dominated by food waste and high-moisture organics, while school waste contained higher paper content and residential waste showed greater heterogeneity. Aggregation into energy-relevant fractions highlighted practical recovery pathways via anaerobic digestion or gasification, supporting data-driven planning, policy, and circular economy strategies for sustainable waste management across waste sources.

AERO-MAP: a data compilation and modeling approach to understand spatial variability in fine- and coarse-mode aerosol composition

Abstract. Aerosol particles are an important part of the Earth climate system, and their concentrations are spatially and temporally heterogeneous, as well as being variable in size and composition. Particles can interact with incoming solar radiation and outgoing longwave radiation, change cloud properties, affect photochemistry, impact surface air quality, change the albedo of snow and ice, and modulate carbon dioxide uptake by the land and ocean. High particulate matter concentrations at the surface represent an important public health hazard. There are substantial data sets describing aerosol particles in the literature or in public health databases, but they have not been compiled for easy use by the climate and air quality modeling community. Here, we present a new compilation of PM2.5 and PM10 surface observations, including measurements of aerosol composition, focusing on the spatial variability across different observational stations. Climate modelers are constantly looking for multiple independent lines of evidence to verify their models, and in situ surface concentration measurements, taken at the level of human settlement, present a valuable source of information about aerosols and their human impacts complementarily to the column averages or integrals often retrieved from satellites. We demonstrate a method for comparing the data sets to outputs from global climate models that are the basis for projections of future climate and large-scale aerosol transport patterns that influence local air quality. Annual trends and seasonal cycles are discussed briefly and are included in the compilation. Overall, most of the planet or even the land fraction does not have sufficient observations of surface concentrations – and, especially, particle composition – to characterize and understand the current distribution of particles. Climate models without ammonium nitrate aerosols omit ∼ 10 % of the globally averaged surface concentration of aerosol particles in both PM2.5 and PM10 size fractions, with up to 50 % of the surface concentrations not being included in some regions. In these regions, climate model aerosol forcing projections are likely to be incorrect as they do not include important trends in short-lived climate forcers.

The Global Spectra-Trait Initiative: A database of paired leaf spectroscopy and functional traits associated with leaf photosynthetic capacity

Accurate assessment of leaf functional traits is crucial for a diverse range of applications from crop phenotyping to parameterizing global climate models. Leaf reflectance spectroscopy offers a promising avenue to advance ecological and agricultural research by complementing traditional, time-consuming gas exchange measurements. However, the development of robust hyperspectral models for predicting leaf photosynthetic capacity and associated traits from reflectance data has been hindered by limited data availability across species and environments. Here we introduce the Global Spectra-Trait Initiative (GSTI), a collaborative repository of paired leaf hyperspectral and gas exchange measurements from diverse ecosystems. The GSTI repository currently encompasses over 7500 observations from 397 species and 41 sites gathered from 36 published and unpublished studies, thereby offering a key resource for developing and validating hyperspectral models of leaf photosynthetic capacity. The GSTI database is developed on GitHub (https://github.com/plantphys/gsti, last access: 4 January 2026) and published to ESS-DIVE https://doi.org/10.15485/2530733, Lamour et al., 2025). It includes gas exchange data, derived photosynthetic parameters, and key leaf traits often associated with traditional gas exchange measurements such as leaf mass per area and leaf elemental composition. By providing a standardized repository for data sharing and analysis, we present a critical step towards creating hyperspectral models for predicting photosynthetic traits and associated leaf traits for terrestrial plants.

Quantum critical point followed by Kondo-like behavior due to Cu substitution in the itinerant antiferromagnet La 2 ⁢(Cu 𝑥 ⁢Ni 1−𝑥 ) 7

La 2 ⁢Ni 7 is an itinerant magnetic system with a small ordered moment of ∼ 0.1⁢µ 𝐵 /Ni and a series of antiferromagnetic (AFM) transitions at 𝑇 1 = 61.0K, 𝑇 2 = 56.5K, and 𝑇 3 = 42.2K. 𝑀 ⁡(𝐻), and 𝜌 ⁡(𝐻) isotherms as well as constant field 𝑀⁡ (𝑇) and 𝜌 ⁡(𝑇) measurements on single-crystalline samples manifest a complex, anisotropic 𝐻−𝑇 phase diagram with multiple phase lines. Here, in this study, we present the growth and characterization of single crystals of the La 2 ⁢(Cu 𝑥 ⁢Ni 1−𝑥 ) 7 series for 0 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 0.181. We measured powder x-ray diffraction and composition, as well as anisotropic temperature- and field-dependent resistivity, temperature- and field-dependent magnetization, and temperature-dependent heat capacity on these single crystals. Using the measured data we infer a transition temperature-composition (𝑇−𝑥) phase diagram for this system to study the evolution of the AFM ordering upon Cu substitution. For 0 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 0.097, the system remains magnetically ordered at base temperature with 𝑥 ≤ 0.012, showing signs of multiple AFM ordering temperatures. For the higher substitution levels 0.125 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 0.181, there are no signatures of magnetic ordering, but anomalous features in resistance and heat capacity data are observed which are consistent with the Kondo effect in this system. The intermediate 𝑥 = 0.105 sample lies between the magnetic ordered and the Kondo regime and is in the vicinity of the AFM quantum critical point (QCP). Thus, La 2⁢ (Cu 𝑥 ⁢Ni 1−𝑥 ) 7 is an example of a small moment system that can be tuned through a QCP. Given these data combined with the fact that the La 2⁢ Ni 7 structure has kagomelike, Ni sublattices running perpendicular to the crystallographic 𝑐 axis, and a predicted 3⁢𝑑-electron flat band that contributes to the density of states near the Fermi energy, La 2 ⁢(Cu 𝑥 ⁢Ni 1−𝑥 ) 7 becomes a promising system to host and study exotic physics.

Water isotope data for the TEMPEST study site, 2023-2026

This dataset contains water isotope (deuterium (dD) and oxygen (d18O)) data from porewater, experimental source water, and aquifer sources from the Terrestrial Ecosystem Manipulation to Probe the Effects of Storm Treatments (TEMPEST) experimental field site in Edgewater, MD. Samples were taken from 2023-2026 and included in file "TEMPEST_Water_Isotope_LANL_2023-2026.csv". Porewater samples were taken from 15cm depth at multiple locations in each experimental plot (i.e., control, freshwater, and saltwater). Water samples were stored in 2 ml amber glass vials with septum caps under refrigeration until analysis. A L2140-i Picarro cavity ringdown spectrometer connected to an A0211 Picarro vaporization module was used to run water samples. Standards (United States Geological Survey (USGS) 47 and 48) were used to check instrument accuracy during each run of samples. Post-processing codes were run to calculate isotopic values from raw data. Reported isotope data is post-processed. Raw data CSV files from the Picarro were processed using a Python script and output as excel files containing data calibrated to Vienna Standard Mean Ocean Water (VSMOW). Standardization is based on USGS47 and USGS48 standards that are measured before and after every 5-10 unknowns. Every measurement is comprised of 10 injections. Processing involved discarding the first 4 injections due to a known memory effect. Raw means of the last 6 injections are taken for each measurement and then corrected from the linear calibration relationship of the USGS standards expected vs measured values to obtain corrected compositions relative to VSMOW. Reported isotope data are corrected mean results.
