Transient thermoregulatory model with graphics output

A user's guide is presented for the transient version of the thermoregulatory model. The model is designed to simulate the transient response of the human thermoregulatory system to thermal inputs. The model consists of 41 compartments over which the terms of the heat balance are computed. The control mechanisms which are identified are sweating, vaso-constriction and vasodilation.

Elastohydrodynamic film thickness measurements of artificially produced nonsmooth surfaces

Optical interferometry is used to measure the elastohydrodynamic (EHD) film thickness associated with artificially produced nonsmooth surfaces. The nonsmooth surfaces are produced by modifying the surfaces of highly-polished balls with irregularities in the form of multiple grooves and dents. By closely spacing these irregularities it is possible not only to produce depressions on the surface of the balls but also to generate pseudo asperities. The average roughness wavelength of this artificially-produced, nonsmooth, surface approximates the average fundamental roughness wavelength found on surfaces of some mechanical elements operating under concentrated contact. By comparing the measured film thickness profiles to the stylus traces of the irregularities, it was possible to observe the local deformations associated with micro-EHD pressure generation. In both pure rolling and pure sliding conditions the artificially-produced asperities are deformed and complete separation exists between them and the mating surface. Such findings demonstrate the importance of local surface topography and resulting micro-EHD effects on the film thickness between rough surfaces in concentrated contact. Sliding data are presented which demonstrate a severe constriction, caused by the irregularities, at the exit of the Hertzian region.

A preliminary assessment of the fluid erosional processes that shaped the Martian outflow channels

Catastrophic floods may be the mechanism which created Martian outflow channels and the distinctive assemblage of channel landforms, including regional and local anastomosing patterns, expanding and contracting reaches correlated with flow constrictions, streamlined uplands, inner channels with recessional headcuts, pendant forms on the downcurrent sides of flow obstacles, and scour marks around the obstacles. A terrestrial landscape which contains analogs to all the Martian outflow features is the Channeled Scabland of eastern Washington, formed by catastrophic flooding across differentially resistant basalt, loess and sedimentary rock. Both hydrodynamic theory and the properties of the boundary undergoing deformation need to be considered in studying the forms that result from catastrophic flooding.

Modification of a Kowa RC-2 fundus camera for self-photography without the use of mydriatics

Research on retinal circulation during space flight required the development of a simple technique to provide self monitoring of blood vessel changes in the fundus without the use of mydriatics. A Kowa RC-2 fundus camera was modified for self-photography by the use of a bite plate for positioning and cross hairs for focusing the subject's retina relative to the film plane. Dilation of the pupils without the use of mydriatics was accomplished by dark-adaption of the subject. Pictures were obtained without pupil constriction by the use of a high speed strobe light. This method also has applications for clinical medicine.

Effect of gravitation stress and hypokinesia on blood vessels of the testicle

Rabbits were exposed to single maximum endurable stresses of cranio-caudal direction, hypokinesia for periods of one to eight weeks, and hypokinesia followed by gravitation stresses. The stresses caused dilatation of vessels, greater sinuosity, and occasional ruptures of the walls and extravasation. The greater part of the capillaries were dilated; the greatest part constricted. In hypokinesia there was an increasing atrophy of the testes. Significant results are reported.

Effects of hypokinesia and hypodynamia on the intraorganic arteries of the heart

The experiments were performed on rabbits kept in small cages for 2-12 weeks. Their motor activity was greatly restricted. The arteries of the heart were injected with an India ink-gelatine mass; injection was directly into the coronary arteries. After fixation in 10% formaline solution 120 micron sections were cut. These were cleared by the Malygin method and examined with a light microscope. After exposure to hypokinetic conditions the picture of the cardiac arterial bed changed. During the first weeks the capillaries of the myocardium were significantly constricted, their course becoming sinuous. With prolonged exposure to hypokinetic conditions the vessels were found to dilate gradually and myocardial architectonics changed.

Single-mode laser studies: Design and performance of a fixed-wave length source and coupling of lasers to thin-film optical waveguides

A module developed for the generation of a stable single wavelength to be used for a fiber optic multiplexing scheme is described. The laser is driven with RZ pulses, and the temperature is stabilized thermoelectrically. The unit is capable of maintaining a fixed wavelength within about 6 A as the pulse duty cycle is changed between 0 and 100 percent. This is considered the most severe case, and much tighter tolerances are obtainable for constant input power coding schemes. Using a constricted double heterostructure laser, a wavelength shift of 0.083 A mA is obtained due to laser self-heating by a dc driving current. The thermoelectric unit is capable of maintaining a constant laser heat-sink temperature within 0.02 C. In addition, miniature lenses and couplers are described which allow efficient coupling of single wavelength modes of junction lasers to thin film optical waveguides. The design of the miniature cylinder lenses and the prism coupling techniques allow 2 mW of single wavelength mode junction laser light to b coupled into thin film waveguides using compact assemblies. Selective grating couplers are also studied.

Strouhal number influence on flight effects on jet noise radiated from convecting quadrupoles

The paper reports a complementary extension of previous work to include the high-frequency features reflected in the discussion of the higher Strouhal number influence on flight effects. It is found that, in addition to the usual features of flight effects on noise from ordinary flows, the high Strouhal number flows exhibit some more interesting features which are uniquely characteristic to them. The additional features are as follows: (1) Flight effects are more favorable to hot jets than to cold jets; (2) the higher the Strouhal number of the jet flow, the lesser the forward arc amplification due to flight; (3) as the Strouhal number increases, the peak amplification angle in the forward quadrant and the peak suppression angle in the aft quadrant move toward 90 deg and get closer, thus reducing the amplification exposure to a constricted angular region; (4) the silence zone is disturbed and displaced from its normal position parallel to the jet flow to give rise to multiple crossings of flight curves with the static line; and (5) the occurrence of multiple crossings is a strange phenomenon solely characteristic of high Strouhal number with high subcritical jet flows in flight.

Investigation of a method for repairing the hot gas system branch 2 of the Symphonie-Satellite MV2 in orbit

The failure of all engines on the Symphonie MV2 satellite is attributed to blockage of the oxidizer branch caused by metal salts precipitating and forming a gel which constricts the narrow passage. Laboratory tests and other simulations conducted to observe the behavior of artificially produced jellies on a vacuum show that a removal or at least a reduction of the blockage in the oxidizer branch is possible by evacuation. The greatest blockage appears to occur in the filter. This fact restricts the capability to perform repairs in orbit because the filter installed ahead of the valve cannot by subjected to a vacuum.

Sound propagation through a variable area duct - Experiment and theory

A comparison of experiment and theory has been made for the propagation of sound through a variable area axisymmetric duct with zero mean flow. Measurement of the acoustic pressure field on both sides of the constricted test section was resolved on a modal basis for various spinning mode sources. Transmitted and reflected modal amplitudes and phase angles were compared with finite element computations. Good agreement between experiment and computation was obtained over a wide range of frequencies and modal transmission variations. The study suggests that modal transmission through a variable area duct is governed by the throat modal cut-off ratio.

InGaAsP/InP laser development for single-mode, high-data-rate communications

Materials studies as well as general and specific device development were carried out in the InGaAsP system. A comparison was made of three standard methods of evaluating substrate quality by means of dislocation studies. A cause of reduced yield of good wafers, the pullover of melt from one bin to the next, has been analyzed. Difficulties with reproducible zinc acceptor doping have been traced to segregation of zinc in the In/Zn alloy used for the doping source. Using EBIC measurments, the pn junction was shown to drift in location depending on factors not always under control. An analysis of contact structures by SIMS showed that the depth to which the sintered Au/Zn contact penetrates into the structure is typically 0.13 microns, or well within the cap layer and out of the p-type cladding and thus not deleterious to laser prformance. The problem of single-mode laser development was investigated and it was shown to be related to the growth habit over four different possible substrate configurations. The fabrication of constricted double heterojunctions, mesa stripe buried heterostructures, and buried heterostructures was discussed, and measurements were presented on the device properties of single-mode buried heterostructure lasers. Results include single spectral line emission at 3 mW and a threshold current of 60 mA.

Mode characteristics of nonplanar double-heterojunction and large-optical-cavity laser structures

Mode behavior of nonplanar double-heterojunction (DH) and large-optical-cavity (LOC) lasers is investigated using the effective index method to model the lateral field distribution. The thickness variations of various layers for the devices discussed are correlated with the growth characteristics of liquid-phase epitaxy over topographical features (channels, mesas) etched into the substrate. The effective dielectric profiles of constricted double-heterojunction (CDH)-LOC lasers show a strong influence on transverse mode operation: the fundamental transverse mode (i.e., in the plane perpendicular to the junction) may be laterally index-guided, while the first (high)-order mode is laterally index-antiguided. The analytical model developed uses a smoothly varying hyperbolic cosine distribution to characterize lateral index variations. The waveguide model is applied to several lasers to illustrate conditions necessary to convert leaky modes to trapped ones via the active-region gain distribution. Theoretical radiation patterns are calculated using model parameters, and matched to an experimental far-field pattern.

A refrigerated dynamic seal

A new sealing concept is proposed where the fluid to be sealed flows through a refrigerated housing or constriction, is frozen to the housing during the transient phase, and under steady state conditions provides a dynamic seal with essentially 'zero' leakage.

Gas levitator having fixed levitation node for containerless processing

A method and apparatus is disclosed for levitating a specimen of material in a containerless environment at a stable nodal position independent of gravity. An elongated levitation tube has a contoured interior in the form of convergent section, constriction, and a divergent section in which the levitation node is created. A gas flow control means prevents separation of flow from the interior walls in the region of a specimen. The apparatus provides for levitating and heating the specimen simultaneously by combustion of a suitable gas mixture combined with an inert gas.

The AlGaAs single-mode stability

Single-mode spectral behavior with aging in constricted double heterojunction (CDH) lasers was studied. The CDH lasers demonstrated excellent reliability ( or = 1 million years extrapolated room-temperature MTTF) and single-mode operation after 10,000 hours of 70 C aging. The deleterious effects of laser-fiber coupling on the spectra of the diodes were eliminated through the use of wedge-shaped fibers. A novel high-power large optical cavity (LOC)-type laser was developed: the terraced-heterostructure (TH)-LOC laser, which provides the highest power into a single-mode (i.e., 50 mW CW) ever reported.

Nutation damper for the AMPTE-IRM satellite: Final Report

The design, computations, and testing of the nutation damper for the AMPTE-IRM satellite are described. The nutation motions of the satellite excite fluid oscillations in the closed tube system; kinetic energy is destroyed (converted to heat) through tube/fluid friction, constriction of the stream by cross sectional change, and formation of turbulence by stream enlargement. This energy is extracted from the satellite such that nutation is reduced. Tests were carried out in a pendulum testing device and the time constants were calculated. Findings showed that the damper remained within the originally specified values and provided for good dynamic behavior of the satellite.
