Contribution to Open Molecules Dataset (coordcomplexsampling)

The Open Molecules Dataset is a project led by external collaborators, focused on the production of a wide diversity of molecular chemistries. This project will include high-throughput electronic structure calculations on metal coordination complexes, biomolecules, and electrolytes. Solvation effects, conformers, chemical reactivity, and spin/charge sampling will be pursued for elements on the periodic table up to, but not including the actinides. We aim to contribute code related to sampling for transition metal complexes, in particular, and expand software capabilities related to other thrusts desired.

Evaporation Induced Entrainment of Contaminants from Evaporating and Burning Liquids.

This interim report details model development, theory, and a literature review focusing on the evaporation induced entrainment (sub-boiling) of contaminated liquids. Entrainment from a variety of sources is the topic of DOE Handbook 3010, and this report deals more broadly with fire related airborne sources of contaminants in hazardous operations. Relatively few studies have examined sub-boiling behavior in the past, however, it can be a phenomenon that presents a fire related risk under hazardous operations. Molecular dynamics simulations are used to infer the gaseous evolution of coordinated complexes, and a model for a water/plutonium/nitrate system is deduced from the simulation results by evaluating the statistical trends of the results. Questions remain as to the chemical reactivity and longevity of entrained species. A generalized computer model capability and simple analytical model assumptions are developed for predicting the results of these and other (boiling and solid entrainment) scenarios. Verification related predictions using these models are illustrated.

Electromagnetic studies of redox systems for energy storage

Both chromium and iron couples were studied on various electrode surfaces in acidic perchlorate solution by using rotating ring-disk techniques. It was found that chloride which forms inner sphere coordination complexes with the redox species enhances the electrode kinetics dramatically. The effects of lead underpotential deposition and surface alloy formation on the kinetics of the chromium couple on gold were studied using both linear sweep voltammetry and potential step techniques. The lad underpotential deposition was found to slow down the kinetics of the reduction of the Cr species on gold surfaces although increase the hydrogen overvoltage. The effect on the chromium kinetics can be explained in terms of principally a double layer effect. The underpotential deposition lead species with its positive charge results in a decrease in the concentration of the Cr species at the electrode surface. Similar phenomena were also observed with bismuth underpotential deposition on gold for the iron couple.

Sensitivity method for integrated structure/active control law design

The development is described of an integrated structure/active control law design methodology for aeroelastic aircraft applications. A short motivating introduction to aeroservoelasticity is given along with the need for integrated structures/controls design algorithms. Three alternative approaches to development of an integrated design method are briefly discussed with regards to complexity, coordination and tradeoff strategies, and the nature of the resulting solutions. This leads to the formulation of the proposed approach which is based on the concepts of sensitivity of optimum solutions and multi-level decompositions. The concept of sensitivity of optimum is explained in more detail and compared with traditional sensitivity concepts of classical control theory. The analytical sensitivity expressions for the solution of the linear, quadratic cost, Gaussian (LQG) control problem are summarized in terms of the linear regulator solution and the Kalman Filter solution. Numerical results for a state space aeroelastic model of the DAST ARW-II vehicle are given, showing the changes in aircraft responses to variations of a structural parameter, in this case first wing bending natural frequency.

Doubly excited 3P(e) resonant states in Ps(-)

Doubly excited 3P(e) resonant states in Ps(-) are calculated using a method of complex-coordinate rotation. Resonance parameters (both resonance positions and widths) for doubly excited states associated with the n = 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 thresholds of positronium atoms are evaluated using elaborate Hylleraas-type functions. In addition to ten Feshbach-type resonances lying below various Ps thresholds, three shape resonances were identified, one each lying above the n = 2, 4, and 6 Ps thresholds. It is further noted that the energy levels for the present 3P(e) states are nearly degenerate with respect to the previously calculated 1P(0) states. Such a symmetric character suggests that the highly and doubly excited Ps(-), similar to its counterpart in H(-), would exhibit rovibrational behaviors analogous to those of XYX triatomic molecules.

Model-based Executive Control through Reactive Planning for Autonomous Rovers

This paper reports on the design and implementation of a real-time executive for a mobile rover that uses a model-based, declarative approach. The control system is based on the Intelligent Distributed Execution Architecture (IDEA), an approach to planning and execution that provides a unified representational and computational framework for an autonomous agent. The basic hypothesis of IDEA is that a large control system can be structured as a collection of interacting agents, each with the same fundamental structure. We show that planning and real-time response are compatible if the executive minimizes the size of the planning problem. We detail the implementation of this approach on an exploration rover (Gromit an RWI ATRV Junior at NASA Ames) presenting different IDEA controllers of the same domain and comparing them with more classical approaches. We demonstrate that the approach is scalable to complex coordination of functional modules needed for autonomous navigation and exploration.

Doubly Excited Resonances in the Positronium Negative Ion

The recent theoretical studies on the doubly excited states of the Ps' ion are described. The results obtained by using the method of complex coordinate rotation show that the three-lepton system behaves very much like an XYX tri-atomic molecule. Furthermore, the recent investigation on the positronium negative ion embedded in Debye plasma environments is discussed. The problem is modeled by the use of a screened Coulomb potential to represent the interaction between the charge particles.

Colorimetric and Label-Free Optical Detection of Pb 2+ Ions via Colloidal Gold Nanoparticles

The detection of Lead (Pb) heavy metal in water is crucial in many chemical processes as it is associated with serious health hazard. Here, we report the selective and precise colorimetric detection of Pb 2+ ions in water exploiting the mechanisms of aggregation and self-assembly of Glutathione (GSH) functionalized gold nanoparticles (GNPs). The carboxyl functional groups are available to create coordination complexes with Pb 2+ inducing aggregation amongst the GSH-GNPs in the presence of Pb 2+ due to the chelation of the GSH ligands. The resulting aggregation of amongst the GSHGNPs in the presence of Pb2+ increases the aggregate size depending on available Pb 2+ ions affecting the plasmonic coupling. This causes in a substantial shift in the plasmon wavelength to a longer wavelength side with increasing Pb 2+ concentration, resulting in a red-to-blue colorimetric or visual change, enabling instant determination of lead content in water.

Metal-ligand catalysts for selective promotion of electrochemical CO 2 RR

The electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) provides opportunities to synthesize value-added products from this greenhouse gas in a sustainable manner. Efficient catalysts for this reaction are provided that selectively drive CO 2 reduction over the thermodynamic and kinetically competitive hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in organic or aqueous electrolytes. The catalysts are metal-polypyridyl coordination complexes of a redox non-innocent terpyridine-based pentapyridine ligand and a first-row transition metal. The metal-ligand cooperativity in [Fe(tpyPY2Me)]2+ drives the electrochemical reduction of CO 2 to CO at low overpotentials with high selectivity for CO 2 RR (>90%).

Long Excited-State Lifetimes in Three-Coordinate Copper(I) Complexes via Triplet–Triplet Energy Transfer to Pyrene-Decorated Isocyanides

There has been much effort to improve excited-state lifetimes in photosensitizers based on earth-abundant first-row transition metals. Copper(I) complexes have gained significant attention in this field, and in most cases, sterically driven approaches are used to optimize their lifetimes. This study presents a series of three-coordinate copper(I) complexes (Cu1–Cu3) where the excited-state lifetime is extended by triplet–triplet energy transfer. The heteroleptic compounds feature a cyclohexyl-substituted β-diketiminate (CyNacNac Me ) paired with aryl isocyanide ligands, giving the general formula Cu(CyNacNac Me )(CN-Ar) (CN-dmp = 2,6-dimethylphenyl isocyanide for Cu1; CN-pyr = 1-pyrenyl isocyanide for Cu2; CN-dmp-pyr = 2,6-dimethyl-4-(1-pyrenyl)phenyl isocyanide for Cu3). The nature, energies, and dynamics of the low-energy triplet excited states are assessed with a combination of photoluminescence measurements at room temperature and 77 K, ultrafast transient absorption (UFTA) spectroscopy, and DFT calculations. The complexes with the pyrene-decorated isocyanides (Cu2 and Cu3) exhibit extended excited-state lifetimes resulting from triplet–triplet energy transfer (TTET) between the short-lived charge-transfer excited state ( 3 CT) and the long-lived pyrene-centered triplet state ( 3 pyr). This TTET process is irreversible in Cu3, producing exclusively the 3 pyr state, and in Cu2, the 3 CT and 3 pyr states are nearly isoenergetic, enabling reversible TTET and long-lived 3 CT luminescence. The improved photophysical properties in Cu2 and Cu3 result in improvements in activity for both photocatalytic stilbene E/Z isomerization via triplet energy transfer and photoredox transformations involving hydrodebromination and C–O bond activation. Furthermore, these results illustrate that the extended excited-state lifetimes achieved through TTET result in newly conceived photosynthetically relevant earth-abundant transition metal complexes.

Coordination Stoichiometry Effects on the Binding Hierarchy of Histamine and Imidazole–M 2+ Complexes

Histidine–M 2+ coordination bonds are a recognized bond motif in biogenic materials with high hardness and extensibility, which has led to growing interest in their use in soft materials for mechanical function. However, the effect of different metal ions on the stability of the coordination complex remains poorly understood, complicating their implementation in metal-coordinated polymer materials. Herein, rheology experiments and density functional theory calculations are used to characterize the stability of coordination complexes and establish the binding hierarchy of histamine and imidazole with Ni 2+ , Cu 2+ , and Zn 2+ . It is found that the binding hierarchy is driven by the specific affinity of the metal ions to different coordination states, which can be macroscopically tuned by changing the metal-to-ligand stoichiometry of the metal-coordinated network. These findings facilitate the rational selection of metal ions for optimizing the mechanical properties of metal-coordinated materials.

Binding, Release and Functionalization of Intact Pnictogen Tetrahedra Coordinated to Dicopper Complexes

The bridging MeCN ligand in the dicopper(I) complexes [(DPFN)Cu 2 (μ,η 1 : η 1 -MeCN)][X] 2 (X=weakly coordinating anion, NTf 2 (1 a), FAl[OC 6 F 10 (C 6 F 5 )] 3 (1 b), Al[OC(CF 3 ) 3 ] 4 (1 c)) was replaced by white phosphorus (P 4 ) or yellow arsenic (As 4 ) to yield [(DPFN)Cu 2 (μ,η 2 : η 2 -E 4 )][X] 2 (E=P (2 a-c), As (3 a-c)). The molecular structures in the solid state reveal novel coordination modes for E 4 tetrahedra bonded to coinage metal ions. Experimental data and quantum chemical computations provide information concerning perturbations to the bonding in coordinated E 4 tetrahedra. Reactions with N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) led to replacement of the E 4 tetrahedra with release of P 4 or As 4 and formation of [(DPFN)Cu 2 (μ,η 1 : η 1 - Me NHC)][X] 2 (4 a,b) or to an opening of one E-E bond leading to an unusual E 4 butterfly structural motif in [(DPFN)Cu 2 (μ,η 1 : η 1 -E 4 Dipp NHC)][X] 2 (E=P (5 a,b), E=As (6)). With a cyclic alkyl amino carbene ( Et CAAC), cleavage of two As-As bonds was observed to give two isomers of [(DPFN)Cu 2 (μ,η 2 : η 2 -As 4 Et CAAC)][X] 2 (7 a,b) with an unusual As 4 -triangle+1 unit.

Luminescent Bimetallic Two-Coordinate Gold(I) Complexes Utilizing Janus Carbenes

A series of bimetallic carbene-metal-amide (cMa) complexes have been prepared with bridging biscarbene ligands to serve as a model for the design of luminescent materials with large oscillator strengths and small energy differences between the singlet and triplet states (ΔE ST ). The complexes have a general structure (R 2 N)Au(:carbene—carbene:)Au(NR 2 ). The bimetallic complexes show solvation-dependent absorption and emission that is analyzed in detail. It is found that the molar absorptivity of the bimetallic complexes is correlated with the energy barrier to rotation of the metal–ligand bond. The bimetallic cMa complexes also exhibit short emission lifetimes (τ = 200–300 ns) with high photoluminescence efficiencies (Φ PL > 95%). The radiative rates of bimetallic cMa complexes are 3–4 times faster than that of the corresponding monometallic complexes. Analysis of temperature-dependent luminescence data indicates that the lifetime for the singlet state (τS 1 ) of bimetallic cMa complexes is near 12 ns with a ΔE ST of 40–50 meV. Here the presented compounds provide a general design for cMa complexes to achieve small values for ΔE ST while retaining high radiative rates. Solution-processed organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) made using two of the complexes as luminescent dopants show high efficiency and low roll-off at high luminance.

Short- to Intermediate-Range Structure, Transport, and Thermophysical Properties of LiF–NaF–ZrF4 Molten Salts

LiF–NaF–ZrF 4 multicomponent molten salts are identified as promising candidates for coolant salts in molten salt reactors and advanced high-temperature reactors. This study focused on low-melting point salt compositions of interest: 38LiF–51NaF–11ZrF 4 , 42LiF–29NaF–29ZrF 4 , and 26LiF–37NaF–37ZrF 4 . Ab-initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) calculations were performed and compared with available experimental data to assess the ability of rigid ion models (RIM) to reproduce short- to intermediate-range structure, transport, and thermophysical properties of the LiF–NaF–ZrF 4 salt mixtures. It is found that as ZrF 4 mol% increases, the average cation–anion coordination number (CN) of monovalent cations (Li + , Na + ) obtained from RIM calculations decreases, while multivalent Zr 4+ CN varied from 15% to 19% in comparison to corresponding AIMD values. In addition, RIM is found to predict the existence of 7, 8, and 9 coordinated fluorozirconate complexes, while AIMD and the available experimental data showed an occurrence of 6, 7, and 8 coordinated complexes in the melt. The intermediate-range structure analysis revealed that while the RIM parameters are able to reproduce a local structure for lower ZrF 4 mol% salts such as in 38LiF–51NaF–11ZrF 4 , an extensive fluorozirconate network formation is observed in RIM simulations for higher ZrF 4 mol% compositions. The network generated by RIM parameters is found to be mainly connected by “corner-sharing” fluorozirconate complexes as opposed to both “edge-sharing” and “corner-sharing” connectively portrayed by AIMD. It is found that a close agreement between AIMD and the RIM salt structure for the 11-mol% ZrF 4 salt resulted in good agreement in the calculated Zr diffusivities and the viscosity values. However, due to the inaccurate short- to intermediate-range structure prediction by RIM for higher ZrF 4 mol% compositions, thermophysical properties such as densities and heat capacity differ by up to 26% and 27%, respectively, upon comparison with AIMD and experimental values. Also, the network-dominated properties such as diffusion coefficients and viscosities differed by up to two and three orders of magnitude, respectively. This study signifies the importance of accurate salt structure generation for an accurate prediction of transport and thermophysical properties of multicomponent molten salts.
