Layer-by-layer assembly of a [Fe-(pyrazine){Pd(CN) 4 }] spin crossover thin film

Abstract [Fe-(pyrazine){Pd(CN) 4 }] (pyrazine = pz) thin films were fabricated using a layer-by-layer assembly approach, a method known to be tunable, versatile, and scalable, since thin films are better-suited for industrial applications. In this study, [Fe-(pz){Pd(CN) 4 }] powder was synthesized, and the results obtained from a vibrating sample magnetometer verified the presence of an abrupt hysteresis loop with widths of 45 K centered around 300 K, indicating good cooperativity. Super conducting quantum interference device magnetometry results indicated a slow spin transition with temperature but with evidence of hysteresis for thin film samples. X-ray absorption analysis provided further support of the spin crossover behavior but differs from the magnetometry because the spin state transition at the surface differs from the bulk of the thin film. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy provided some insight into issues with the film deposition process and multiplex fitting was used to further support the claim that the surface of the film is different than the bulk of the film.

Electric-field-induced crossover of polarization reversal mechanisms in Al 1–x Sc x N ferroelectrics

Scandium-doped aluminum nitride, Al 1–x Sc x N, represents a new class of displacive ferroelectric materials with high polarization and sharp hysteresis along with high-temperature resilience, facile synthesizability and compatibility with standard CMOS fabrication techniques. The fundamental physics behind the transformation of unswitchable piezoelectric AlN into switchable Al–Sc–N ferroelectrics depends upon important atomic properties such as local structure, dopant distributions and the presence of competing mechanism of polarization switching in the presence of an applied electric-field that have not been understood. We computationally synthesize Al 1–x Sc x N to quantify the inhomogeneity of Sc distribution and phase segregation, and characterize its crystal and electronic structure as a function of Sc-doping. Nudged elastic band calculations of the potential energy surface and quantum molecular dynamics simulations of direct electric-field-driven ferroelectric switching reveal a crossover between two polarization reversal mechanisms—inhomogeneous nucleation-and-growth mechanism originating near Sc-rich regions in the limit of low applied fields and nucleation-limited-switching in the high-field regime. Finally, understanding polarization reversal pathways for these two mechanisms as well as the role of local Sc concentration on activation barriers provides design rules to identify other combinations of dopant elements, such as Zr, Mg etc. to synthesize superior AlN-based ferroelectric materials.

Half-ice, half-fire-driven ultranarrow phase crossover in one-dimensional decorated 𝑞-state Potts ferrimagnets: An AI-co-led exploration

OpenAI’s reasoning model o3-mini-high was used to carry out an exact analytic study of one-dimensional ferrimagnetic site- and bond-decorated 𝑞-state Potts models. We demonstrate that the finite-temperature ultranarrow phase crossover (UNPC), driven by a hidden “half-ice, half-fire” state recently discovered in the 𝑞=2 case (Ising model), persists for 𝑞>2. Moreover, we identify unique features for 𝑞>2, including the dome structure in the field-temperature phase diagram, and for large 𝑞 a secondary high-temperature UNPC to the fully disordered paramagnetic state. As the UNPC quickly approaches a genuine transition by enhancing 𝐽, the interaction between the backbone spins, two distinct behaviors emerge: In the site-decorated Potts model, 𝑇 0 is independent of 𝐽 and thus remains unchanged (Type-I UNPC), and in the bond-decorated Potts model with 𝑞>2, 𝑇 0 depends on 𝐽 and quickly shifts toward a finite temperature as 𝐽 increases (Type-II UNPC). These results establish a versatile framework for engineering controlled fast state-flipping switches in low-dimensional systems. Our nine-dan artificial intelligence (AI)-contribution framework assigns AI the meritorious status of AI-co-led discovery in this work.

Thermodynamics and magnetism in the two-dimensional to three-dimensional crossover of the Hubbard model

The realization of antiferromagnetic (AF) correlations in ultracold fermionic atoms on an optical lattice is a significant achievement. Experiments have been carried out in one, two, and three dimensions, and have also studied anisotropic configurations with stronger tunneling in some lattice directions. Such anisotropy is relevant to the physics of cuprate superconductors and other strongly correlated materials. Moreover, this anisotropy might be harnessed to enhance AF order. Here we numerically investigate, using the determinant quantum Monte Carlo method, a simple realization of anisotropy in the three-dimensional (3D) Hubbard model in which the tunneling between planes, $t_⊥$, is unequal to the intraplane tunneling $\textit{t}$. This model interpolates between the three-dimensional isotropic ($t_⊥ = t$) and two-dimensional (2D;$t_⊥$ = 0) systems. In this work, we show that at fixed interaction strength to tunneling ratio ($\textit{U/t}$), anisotropy can enhance the magnetic structure factor relative to both 2D and 3D results. However, this enhancement occurs at interaction strengths below those for which the Néel temperature $T_{\text{Néel}}$ is largest, in such a way that the structure factor cannot be made to exceed its value in isotropic 3D systems at the optimal $\textit{U/t}$. We characterize the 2D-3D crossover in terms of the magnetic structure factor, real space spin correlations, number of doubly occupied sites, and thermodynamic observables. An interesting implication of our results stems from the entropy's dependence on anisotropy. As the system evolves from 3D to 2D, the entropy at a fixed temperature increases. Correspondingly, at fixed entropy, the temperature will decrease going from 3D to 2D. This suggests a cooling protocol in which the dimensionality is adiabatically changed from 3D to 2D.

BCS-BEC crossover of the strongly interacting 6 Li − 40 K mixture

Here, we present quantum Monte Carlo calculations of the properties of a two-component mass-imbalanced Fermi gas, corresponding to the 6 Li − 40 K mixture. We compute the equation of state of the unpolarized system as a function of the scattering length with particular attention paid to the unitary limit, where the effect of the effective range of the interaction is explored. In order to investigate differences from the equal-mass case we also compute the pair-distribution function and the momentum distribution over a range of interaction strengths, which can provide information about the structure of the system. Finally, we compute the heavy-light quasiparticle spectrum for the full crossover regime. Our theoretical predictions, based on quantum Monte Carlo calculations, should inform future theoretical studies and can be tested by experiments with ultracold fermionic gases.

Robust cycloid crossover driven by anisotropy in the skyrmion host GaV 4 S 8

We report on the anomalous magnetization dynamics of the cycloidally modulated spin textures under the influence of uniaxial anisotropy in multiferroic GaV 4 S 8 . The temperature and field dependence of the linear ac susceptibility [$χ'_{1ω}$ (T, H)], AC magnetic loss [$χ''_{1ω}$ (T, H)], and nonlinear AC magnetic response [$M_{3ω}$ (T, H)] are examined across the magnetic phase diagram in the frequency range f = 10 - 10 000 Hz. According to recent theory, skyrmion vortices under axial crystal symmetry are confined along specific orientations, resulting in enhanced robustness against oblique magnetic fields and altered spin dynamics. We characterize the magnetic response of each spin texture and find that the dynamic rigidity of the Néel skyrmion lattice appears enhanced compared to Bloch-type skyrmions in cubic systems, even in the multidomain state. Anomalous M 3 ω and strong dissipation emerge over the same phase regime where strong variations in the cycloid pitch were observed on lowering temperature in recent small-angle neutron-scattering experiments [White et al., Phys. Rev. B 97, 020401(R) (2018)]. Here, we show that strong anisotropy also drives an extended crossover of the zero-field cycloid texture in GaV 4 S 8 . The frequency dependence of these dynamic signatures is consistent with that of a robust anharmonic spin texture exhibiting a correlated domain arrangement. The results underpin the essential role of magnetic anisotropy in enhancing the rigidity of topological spin textures for diverse applications.

Spatial BCS-BEC crossover in superconducting $\textit{p–n}$ junctions

Here, we present a theory of superconducting $\textit{p–n}$ junctions. To this end, we consider a two band model of doped bulk semiconductors with attractive interactions between the charge carriers and derive the superconducting order parameter, the quasiparticle density of states, and the chemical potential as a function of the semiconductor gap $Δ_0$ and the doping level ε. We verify previous results for the quantum phase diagram for a system with constant density of states in the conduction and valence band, which show BCS-superconductor to Bose-Einstein-condensation (BEC) and BEC-to-insulator transitions as a function of doping level and the size of the band gap. Then, we extend this formalism to a density of states which is more realistic for 3D systems and derive the corresponding quantum phase diagram, where we find that a BEC phase can only exist for small band gaps $Δ_0 < Δ ^{\ast}_0$. For larger band gaps, we find rather a direct transition from an insulator to a BCS phase. Next, we apply this theory to study the properties of superconducting $\textit{p–n}$ junctions. We derive the spatial variation of the superconducting order parameter along the $\textit{p–n}$ junction. As the potential difference across the junction leads to energy band bending, we find a spatial crossover between a BCS and BEC condensate, as the density of charge carriers changes across the $\textit{p–n}$ junction. For the two-dimensional system, we find two possible regimes, when the bulk is in a BCS phase, a BCS-BEC-BCS junction with a single BEC layer in the space charge region, and a BCS-BEC-I-BEC-BCS junction with two layers of BEC condensates separated by an insulating layer. In three dimensions we find that there can also be a conventional BCS-I-BCS junction for semiconductors with band gaps exceeding $Δ^{\ast}_0$. Thus, we find that there can be BEC layers in the well controlled setting of doped semiconductors, where the doping level can be varied to change and control the thickness of BEC and insulator layers, making Bose-Einstein condensates thereby possibly accessible to experimental transport and optical studies in solid-state materials.

Crossover from Kondo to Fermi-liquid behavior induced by high magnetic field in 1 T -VTe 2 single crystals

The magnetic and magnetotransport properties of metallic 1T -VTe 2 single crystals were investigated at temperatures from 1.3 to 300 K and in magnetic fields up to 35 T. Upon applying a high magnetic field, it is found that the electrical resistivity displays a crossover from the logarithmic divergence of the single-impurity Kondo effect to the Fermi liquid behavior at low temperatures. The Brillouin scale of the negative magnetoresistivity above the Kondo temperature T K = 12 K indicates that the Kondo features originate from intercalated V ions, with S = 1/2. Both magnetic susceptibility and the Hall effect show an anomaly around T K . By using the modified Hamann expression we successfully describe the temperature-dependent resistivity under various magnetic fields, which shows the characteristic peak below T K due to the splitting of the Kondo resonance.

Conformal maps of viscous electron flow in the Gurzhi crossover

Herein we investigate the impact of geometric constriction on the viscous flow of electron liquid through quantum point contacts. We provide analysis on the electric potential distribution given the setup of a slit configuration and use the method of conformal mapping to obtain analytical results. The potential profile can be tested and contrasted experimentally with the scanning tunneling potentiometry technique. We discuss intricate physics that underlies the Gurzhi effect, i.e., the enhancement of conductivity in the viscous flow, and compare results for different boundary conditions. In addition, we calculate the temperature dependence of the momentum relaxation time as a result of impurity assisted quasiballistic interference effects and discuss various correlational corrections that lead to the violation of Matthiessen's rule in the hydrodynamic regime. We caution that spatially inhomogeneous profiles of current in the Gurzhi crossover between Ohmic and Stokes flows might also appear in the nonhydrodynamic limit where nonlocality plays an important role. This conclusion is corroborated by calculation of dispersive conductivity in the weakly impure limit.

Localization crossover and subdiffusive transport in a classical facilitated network model of a disordered interacting quantum spin chain

Here, we consider the random-field Heisenberg model, a paradigmatic model for many-body localization (MBL) and add a Markovian dephasing bath coupled to the Anderson orbitals of the model's noninteracting limit. We map this system to a classical facilitated hopping model that is computationally tractable for large system sizes and investigate its dynamics. The classical model exhibits a robust crossover between an ergodic (thermal) phase and a frozen (localized) phase. The frozen phase is destabilized by thermal subregions (bubbles), which thermalize surrounding sites by providing a fluctuating interaction energy and so enable off-resonance particle transport. Investigating steady-state transport, we observe that the interplay between thermal and frozen bubbles leads to a clear transition between diffusive and subdiffusive regimes. This phenomenology both describes the MBL system coupled to a bath and provides a classical analog for the MBL transition in the corresponding quantum model, in that the classical model displays long local memory times. It also highlights the importance of the details of the bath coupling in studies of MBL systems coupled to thermal environments.

Spin liquid to spin glass crossover in the random quantum Heisenberg magnet

We study quantum SU($M$) spins with all-to-all and random Heisenberg exchange interactions of root-mean-square strength $J$. The $M \rightarrow \infty$ model has a spin liquid ground state with the spinons obeying the equations of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. Numerical studies of the SU(2) model with $S=1/2$ spins show spin glass order in the ground state, but also display SYK spin liquid behavior in the intermediate frequency spin spectrum. We employ a $1/M$ expansion to describe the crossover from fractionalized fermionic spinons to a confining spin glass state with weak spin glass order $q_{EA}$. The SYK spin liquid behavior persists down to a frequency $\omega_\ast \sim J q_{EA}$, and for $\omega < \omega_\ast$, the spectral density is linear in $\omega$, thus quenching the extensive zero temperature entropy of the spin liquid. Furthermore, the linear $\omega$ spectrum is qualitatively similar to that obtained earlier using bosonic spinons for large $q_{EA}$. We argue that the extensive SYK spin liquid entropy is transformed as $T \rightarrow 0$ to an extensive complexity of the spin glass state.

Magnetization reversal driven by electron localization-delocalization crossover in the inverse spinel Co 2 VO 4

Neutron diffraction, magnetization, and muon spin relaxation measurements, supplemented by density functional theory (DFT) calculations are employed to unravel temperature-driven magnetization reversal in inverse spinel Co 2 VO 4 . All measurements show a second-order magnetic phase transition at T C = 168 K to a collinear ferrimagnetic phase. Neutron diffraction measurements reveal two antiparallel ferromagnetic (FM) sublattices, belonging to magnetic ions on two distinct crystal lattice sites, where the relative balance between the two sublattices determine the net FM moment in the unit cell. As the evolution of the ordered moment with temperature differs between the two sublattices, the net magnetic moment reaches a maximum at T NC = 138 K and reverses its sign at T MR = 65 K. The DFT results suggest that the underlying microscopic mechanism for the reversal is a delocalization of the unfilled 3d -shell electrons on one sublattice just below T C , followed by a gradual localization as the temperature is lowered. Furthermore, this delocalized-localized crossover is supported by muon spectroscopy results, as strong T 1 relaxation observed below T C indicates fluctuating internal fields.

Dimensional crossover and symmetry transformation of charge density waves in VSe 2

Collective phenomena in solids can be sensitive to the dimensionality of the system; a case of special interest is VSe 2 , which shows a (√7×√3) charge density wave (CDW) in the single layer with threefold symmetry in the normal phase spontaneously broken, in contrast to the (4×4) in-plane CDW in the bulk. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) from VSe 2 ranging from a single layer to the bulk reveals the evolution of the electronic structure including the Fermi surface contours and the CDW gap. At a thickness of two layers, the ARPES maps are already nearly bulklike, but the transition temperature T C for the (4×4) CDW is much higher than the bulk value of 110 K. These results can be understood as due to dimensional crossover of phonon instability driven by a competition of nesting vectors. Here, in this letter, we provide key insights into the CDW mechanisms and offer a perspective in the search and control of emergent phases in quantum materials.

Antiferromagnet to ferromagnet crossover driven by nonmagnetic Co doping in heavy-fermion YbRh 3 Si 7

YbRh 3 ⁢Si 7 is a heavy fermion compound that stands out among Yb-based heavy fermions, with its relatively high magnetic ordering temperature and large Yb-Yb distance. To investigate the origin of the magnetic properties in this compound, we synthesized Co doped YbRh 3⁢ Si 7 , achieving a record-high ferromagnetic ordering temperature T C =15.6K, only limited by the Co solubility of 20%. Furthermore, we find a crossover from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic order with Co doping. Additionally, the specific heat and magnetotransport measurements show heavy fermion behavior and the persistence of Kondo latticelike behavior in the Yb⁢(Rh 1-x Co x ) 3⁢ Si 7 series.

Hopping crossover and high-temperature superspin glass behavior in Ni films deposited on MoS 2

Realizing the potential of MoS 2 and other two-dimensional semiconductors in spintronic devices requires a fundamental understanding of their interaction with ferromagnetic metals. We have investigated the transport and magnetic properties of thin Ni films grown on single-crystal MoS 2 substrates. The Ni is found to have a granular morphology with an average grain size of approximately 2 nm. Like previously investigated granular Ni/insulator composites below the percolation threshold, transport is found to proceed via hopping. However, our Ni/MoS 2 sample exhibits a dual crossover: activated hopping to 𝑇−1/2 variable-range hopping at a higher temperature and then a transition to power-law behavior at a lower temperature. The magnetoresistance was used as a novel probe for uncovering superspin-glass-like behavior above room temperature in the Ni/MoS 2 nanostructure, which also exhibits a collective ferromagnetic state at very low temperatures, reminiscent of superferromagnetism.

Embedding a critical point in a hadron to quark-gluon crossover equation of state

Lattice QCD simulations have shown unequivocally that the transition from hadrons to quarks and gluons is a crossover when the baryon chemical potential is zero or small. Many model calculations predict the existence of a critical point at a value of the chemical potential where current lattice simulations are unreliable. We show how to embed a critical point in a smooth background equation of state so as to yield the critical exponents and critical amplitude ratios expected of a transition in the same universality class as the liquid-gas phase transition and the three-dimensional Ising model. There are only two independent critical exponents; the relations α + 2β + γ = 2 and β(δ-1) = γ arise automatically, as does a relation between the two critical amplitudes. The resulting equation of state has parameters that may be inferred by hydrodynamic modeling of heavy-ion collisions in the Beam Energy Scan II at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider or in experiments at other accelerators.

Correlating confinement to topological fluctuations near the crossover transition in QCD

We show the existence of strong (anti)correlations between the topological hot spots and the local values of the trace of the Polyakov loop in 2 + 1 flavor QCD with physical quark mass, in the vicinity of the crossover transition corresponding to the simultaneous restoration of chiral symmetry and deconfinement. Using sophisticated lattice techniques, we have carefully identified the topological hot spots using quark zero modes and measured the short-distance fluctuations of the Polyakov loop about them, showing how the latter is repelled quite strongly around the peak of the zero modes. Though we could explain some aspects of these correlations within the instanton-dyon picture, our work sets the stage for a larger goal towards a systematic study of the role of different topological species that interact with the Polyakov loop, establishing the strong connection between topology and confinement.

Dimensional Crossover of the Integer Quantum Hall Plateau Transition and Disordered Topological Pumping

We study the quantum Hall plateau transition on rectangular tori. As the aspect ratio of the torus is increased, the two-dimensional critical behavior, characterized by a subthermodynamic number of topological states in a vanishing energy window around a critical energy, changes drastically. In the thin-torus limit, the entire spectrum is Anderson localized; however, an extensive number of states retain a Chern number C ≠ 0. In this work, we resolve this apparent paradox by mapping the thin-torus quantum Hall system onto a disordered Thouless pump, where the Chern number corresponds to the winding number of an electron’s path in real space during a pump cycle. We then characterize quantitatively the crossover between the one- and two-dimensional regimes for finite torus thickness, where the average Thouless conductance also shows anomalous scaling.
