Structure and dynamics of hydrodynamically interacting finite-size Brownian particles in a spherical cavity: Spheres and cylinders

The structure and dynamics of confined suspensions of particles of arbitrary shape are of interest in multiple disciplines from biology to engineering. Theoretical studies are often limited by the complexity of long-range particle-particle and particle-wall forces, including many-body fluctuating hydrodynamic interactions. Here, we report a computational study on the diffusion of spherical and cylindrical particles confined in a spherical cavity. We rely on an immersed-boundary general geometry Ewald-like method to capture lubrication and long-range hydrodynamics and include appropriate non-slip conditions at the confining walls. A Chebyshev polynomial approximation is used to satisfy the fluctuation-dissipation theorem for the Brownian suspension. We explore how lubrication, long-range hydrodynamics, particle volume fraction, and shape affect the equilibrium structure and the diffusion of the particles. It is found that once the particle volume fraction is greater than 10%, the particles start to form layered aggregates that greatly influence particle dynamics. Hydrodynamic interactions strongly influence the particle diffusion by inducing spatially dependent short-time diffusion coefficients, stronger wall effects on the particle diffusion toward the walls, and a sub-diffusive regime-caused by crowding-in the long-time particle mobility. The level of asymmetry of the cylindrical particles considered here is enough to induce an orientational order in the layered structure, decreasing the diffusion rate and facilitating a transition to the crowded mobility regime at low particle concentrations. Our results offer fundamental insights into the diffusion and distribution of globular and fibrillar proteins inside cells.

Evaluation of the Performance and Exhaust Emissions of a 4 Cylinder CI Engine Operating With Dimethyl Ether (DME) and Propane Blends

In response to stringent emissions regulations and the need for higher efficiency engines, the utilization of DME and propane fuel blends in compression ignition (CI) engines has gained interest in the automotive industry. In this study, a range of DME-propane blends are explored in a CI combustion strategy at high injection pressures. A GT-Power model of a 2.2 L Hyundai CI engine was developed to facilitate evaluation of the impacts of variations of DME and propane blends at a light and medium engine speed-torque-load operating condition; specifically at 1500 rpm, 50 Nm and 2.84 bar brake mean effective pressure (BMEP); and 2000 rpm, 150 Nm, 8.53 bar BMEP speed-torque-load combination. Here, the GT-Power model was validated using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations. The results indicate that high diesel-like efficiencies can be achieved with a 100% DME mass substitution and up to 50% propane-DME blends could be implemented without a significant penalty on engine performance indicators. Significant brake specific nitrogen oxides (BSNOx) reductions were also observed along with reductions in carbon dioxide (CO2) and soot when leveraging these fuel blends.

Binary pseudo-random array for calibration of interferometers with transmission spheres and cylinders

Binary pseudo-random array (BPRA) “white noise” artifacts are highly effective for characterizing the instrument transfer function (ITF) of surface topography metrology tools and wavefront measurement instruments. These BPRA artifacts feature all spatial frequencies within the instrument bandpass equally, resulting in a power spectral density with a white-noise-like character. This characteristic allows for direct ITF determination with uniform sensitivity across the entire spatial frequency range. We have developed a novel BPRA calibration standard that combines the diffractive pattern of a reflection computer-generated hologram (CGH) with the white noise generating BPRA pattern. By integrating these technologies using the same lithographic techniques, the resulting calibration sample enables ITF characterization of a Fizeau interferometer with a transmission sphere, or any nulling optic.

Computing of Fluidic Forces in Rotating Cylinders with Application to Active Magnetic Bearing Control

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has been engaged to develop molten salt technologies. Molten salts are chemically aggressive liquids that operate at high temperatures. As part of this activity, ORNL designed a molten salt pump for molten salt that has no seals and that operates immersed in the salt. To minimize wear on rotating components, the pump uses active magnetic bearings (AMBs) to support the shaft and rotor. The pump is centrifugal and is oriented horizontally (A. Melin, 2013).

Analysis of SCALE Criticality and Sensitivity Calculations for Reflected HEU Cylinders [Slides]

The SCALE code package offers multiple nuclear data libraries supporting Monte Carlo transport, with sensitivity and uncertainty methods derived from MC transport solutions. Several libraries are multigroup, which introduce bias differing by system. Previous work has shown poor S/U results in several reflector materials: ICSBEP benchmark HMF-084 was selected to analyze biases and S/U method applicability to a variety of reflectors. Prior and ongoing work found inaccuracies in CSAS and TSUNAMI results, which were further investigated utilizing the HEU-MET-FAST-084 ICSBEP critical benchmark, chosen for its geometrical simplicity and variety of reflector materials. Perturbation of reflector thickness across various reflector materials allowed for an assortment of materials is to be tested swiftly for each sequence and method. Observation was an increasing bias of MG $k_{eff}$ relative to CE, in both direction and magnitude. IFP produced extremely reliable results. >85% of CLUTCH cases were found satisfactory.

New Two-Cylinder Prototype Demonstration and Concept Design of a Next Generation Class 3-6 Opposed Piston Engine (Final Report)

The objective of the project is to research, develop, and test an Opposed Piston (OP) engine prototype capable of ≥10% fuel economy improvement over a 2015 baseline diesel engine while meeting prevailing emissions standards and include a cost analysis of the proposed technologies that validates an operating cost payback of less than 2 years. Results: In direct comparison with the baseline Isuzu model, the OP engine exhibited a noteworthy average fuel economy improvement exceeding 12% across five distinct driving cycles, including the Interstate cycle, Congested interstate cycle, GM-city cycle, HWFET cycle, and FTP cycle, with Interstate cycle benefited the most.
