NUCLEI (Nuclear Low-Energy Computational Initiative) [Contributions of the University of North Carolina]
This report details research done by the University of North Carolina as part of the SciDAC NUCLEI (Nuclear Low-Energy Computational Initiative) between 2012 and 2017. The work had two areas of focus: (a) the use of Energy-Density Functional (EDF) Theory to compute $\beta$-decay rates for essentially all nuclei so $r$-process nucleosynthesis can be better understood, and (b) the development of new techniques to compute the nuclear matrix elements that govern neutrinoless double-$\beta$ decay. On the first front, our work culminated in a table of $\beta$-decay rates for all neutron-rich even-even isotopes, and on the second in a combination of EDF theory and the shell model that allowed calculations in Hilbert spaces of unprecedented size. The reference list at the end of this report contains the most important publications under the grant.
