GOTHIC Aerosol Source Depletion Studies

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory has continued work to develop an aerosol-laden flow modeling capability with the Generation of Thermal Hydraulic Information in Containment (GOTHIC TM ) computer code to perform simulations for thermal hydraulic conditions and aerosol transport and deposition in spent fuel casks. This report describes our recent work to expand our model that was originally developed in 2019 to allow for thermal characterization, carrier gas flow determination, and tracking of particulate behavior throughout the entire canister volume. This was achieved through conversion of decay heat source in all fuel tubes within the model from heaters to thermal conductors in GOTHIC as well as remeshing the internal volume of the canister. These model improvements allowed for simulations of base case scenarios for comparison of similar efforts by our collaborators with alternative tools at Sandia and Oak Ridge. Several characteristics of the GOTHIC code were elucidated by this effort and were documented for consideration in how the code is used for this effort moving forward. For instance, treatment of particle size distributions, initial spatial distributions, mesh gradients, and minimum volume concentrations were identified as important issues for consideration. Ultimately, the current version of the code is capable of tracking temperatures, flow rates, and particle behavior throughout the canister internal volume. This report presents predicted depletion times and preferred deposition patterns within the canister. Additionally, this report documents code performance and insights for further model development and use for comparisons to other codes and for predicting system behavior in experiments being performed and planned by our collaborators.

Sclerostin Depletion Induces Inflammation in the Bone Marrow of Mice

Romosozumab, a humanized monoclonal antibody specific for sclerostin (SOST), has been approved for treatment of postmenopausal women with osteoporosis at a high risk for fracture. Previous work in sclerostin global knockout (Sost-/- ) mice indicated alterations in immune cell development in the bone marrow (BM), which could be a possible side effect in romosozumab-treated patients. Here, we examined the effects of short-term sclerostin depletion in the BM on hematopoiesis in young mice receiving sclerostin antibody (Scl-Ab) treatment for 6 weeks, and the effects of long-term Sost deficiency on wild-type (WT) long-term hematopoietic stem cells transplanted into older cohorts of Sost-/- mice. Our analyses revealed an increased frequency of granulocytes in the BM of Scl-Ab-treated mice and WT→Sost -/- chimeras, indicating myeloid-biased differentiation in Sost-deficient BM microenvironments. This myeloid bias extended to extramedullary hematopoiesis in the spleen and was correlated with an increase in inflammatory cytokines TNFα, IL-1α, and MCP-1 in Sost-/- BM serum. Additionally, we observed alterations in erythrocyte differentiation in the BM and spleen of Sost-/- mice. Taken together, our current study indicates novel roles for Sost in the regulation of myelopoiesis and control of inflammation in the BM.

Where Is the Water? Jupiter-like C/H Ratio but Strong H{sub 2}O Depletion Found on τ Boötis b Using SPIRou

The present-day envelope of gaseous planets is a relic of how these giant planets originated and evolved. Measuring their elemental composition therefore presents a powerful opportunity to answer long-standing questions regarding planet formation. Obtaining precise observational constraints on the elemental inventory of giant exoplanets has, however, remained challenging owing to the limited simultaneous wavelength coverage of current space-based instruments. Here, we present thermal emission observations of the nontransiting hot Jupiter τ Boo b using the new wide wavelength coverage (0.95–2.50 μm) and high spectral resolution (R = 70,000) CFHT/SPIRou spectrograph. By combining a total of 20 hr of SPIRou data obtained over five nights in a full atmospheric retrieval framework designed for high-resolution data, we constrain the abundances of all the major oxygen- and carbon-bearing molecules and recover a noninverted temperature structure using a new free-shape, nonparametric temperature–pressure profile retrieval approach. We find a volume mixing ratio of log(CO) = -2.46{sub -0.29}{sup +0.25} and a highly depleted water abundance of less than 0.0072 times the expected value for a solar composition envelope. Combined with upper limits on the abundances of CH{sub 4}, CO{sub 2}, HCN, TiO, and C{sub 2}H{sub 2}, this results in a gas-phase C/H ratio of 5.85{sub -2.82}{sup +4.44} × solar, consistent with the value of Jupiter, and an envelope C/O ratio robustly greater than 0.60, even when taking into account the oxygen that may be sequestered out of the gas phase. Combined, the inferred supersolar C/H, O/H, and C/O ratios on τ Boo b support a formation scenario beyond the water snowline in a disk enriched in CO owing to pebble drift.

H I Depletion Begins Well Beyond the Virial Radius: A FAST Stacking Study of 36 Galaxy Clusters to 5 × R 200

Abstract We present a stacking study of the neutral atomic hydrogen (H i ) content in and around 36 local galaxy clusters at z < 0.07, using a combination of the FAST All Sky H i survey (FASHI) and the extensive spectroscopic catalog mainly from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI). We employ spectral stacking techniques to probe the average H i mass and HI-to-stellar mass ratio ( M HI / M * ) for member galaxies down to stellar masses of M * ∼ 10 9 M ⊙ , spanning a projected cluster-centric distance of up to 5 R 200 . Our analysis reveals a pronounced environmental effect; both M HI and M HI / M * decrease steadily toward the cluster center, dropping by ∼0.5 dex on average from the outskirts to the core. Crucially, we find that M HI / M * of galaxies remain lower than the field galaxies even at the 5 R 200 . This provides direct, statistical evidence for substantial gas stripping and preprocessing in the cluster outskirts, likely occurring in infalling groups and large-scale filaments. By further splitting the sample by g − r color, we show that the H i deficiency persists at fixed galaxy color; even the bluest cluster members exhibit ∼0.5 dex lower M HI / M * than field galaxies of similar color, reflecting environmental effects on the cold gas reservoir prior to full optical transformation. The total H i mass within clusters and their outskirts agrees broadly with predictions from cosmological simulations. Our results underscore the critical role of the extended cluster environment in quenching galaxies by depleting their cold gas reservoirs well before they enter the dense cluster core.

Augmentation of progestin signaling rescues testis organization and spermatogenesis in zebrafish with the depletion of androgen signaling

Disruption of androgen signaling is known to cause testicular malformation and defective spermatogenesis in zebrafish. However, knockout of cyp17a1 , a key enzyme responsible for the androgen synthesis, in ar -/- male zebrafish paradoxically causes testicular hypertrophy and enhanced spermatogenesis. Because Cyp17a1 plays key roles in hydroxylation of pregnenolone and progesterone (P4), and converts 17α-hydroxypregnenolone to dehydroepiandrosterone and 17α-hydroxyprogesterone to androstenedione, we hypothesize that the unexpected phenotype in cyp17a1 -/-; androgen receptor ( ar )-/- zebrafish may be mediated through an augmentation of progestin/nuclear progestin receptor (nPgr) signaling. In support of this hypothesis, we show that knockout of cyp17a1 leads to accumulation of 17α,20β-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (DHP) and P4. Further, administration of progestin, a synthetic DHP mimetic, is sufficient to rescue testicular development and spermatogenesis in ar -/- zebrafish, whereas knockout of npgr abolishes the rescue effect of cyp17a1 -/- in the cyp17a1 -/-; ar -/- double mutant. Analyses of the transcriptomes among the mutants with defective testicular organization and spermatogenesis ( ar -/-, ar -/-; npgr -/- and cyp17a -/-; ar -/-; npgr -/-), those with normal phenotype (control and cyp17a1 -/-), and rescued phenotype ( cyp17a1 -/-; ar -/-) reveal a common link between a downregulated expression of insl3 and its related downstream genes in cyp17a -/-; ar -/-; npgr -/- zebrafish. Taken together, our data suggest that genetic or pharmacological augmentation of the progestin/nPgr pathway is sufficient to restore testis organization and spermatogenesis in zebrafish with the depletion of androgen signaling.

CACTUS: A depleted monolithic active timing sensor using a CMOS radiation hard technology

The planned luminosity increase at the Large Hadron Collider in the coming years has triggered interest in the use of the particles' time of arrival as additional information in specialized detectors to mitigate the impact of pile-up. The required time resolution is of the order of tens of picoseconds, with a spatial granularity of the order of 1 mm. A time measurement at this precision level will also be of interest beyond the LHC and beyond high energy particle physics. We present in this paper the first developments towards a radiation hard Depleted Monolithic Active Pixel Sensor (DMAPS), with high-resolution time measurement capability. The technology chosen is a standard high voltage CMOS process, in conjunction with a high resistivity detector material, which has already proven to efficiently detect particles in tracking applications after several hundred of Mrad of irradiation.

System and method for stimulated emission depletion projection stereolithography

The present disclosure relates to a system for forming a three dimensional (3D) part. The system may incorporate a beam delivery subsystem for generating optical signals, and a mask subsystem that receives the optical signals and generates optical images therefrom. A first one of the optical images activates a polymerization species of a photo-sensitive resin in accordance with illuminated areas thereof, to thus cause polymerization of select portions of the photo-sensitive resin to help form a layer of the 3D part. A second one of the optical images causes stimulated emission depletion of subportions of the polymerization species, simultaneously, over various areas of the layer, to enhance resolution of at least one subportion of the select portions of the photo-sensitive resin.

X-ray characterization of fully-depleted p-channel Skipper-CCDs for the DarkNESS mission

The Dark matter Nanosatellite Equipped with Skipper Sensors (DarkNESS) mission is a 6U CubeSat designed to search for X-ray lines from decaying dark matter using Skipper-CCDs. Thick, fully-depleted p-channel Skipper-CCDs provide low readout noise and high quantum efficiency for 1-10 keV X-rays, but their X-ray performance has not yet been demonstrated in the space environment. DarkNESS will operate in low-Earth orbit, where trapped protons induce displacement damage in the sensor that increases charge-transfer inefficiency and degrades the X-ray energy resolution. This work measures the X-ray line response of Skipper-CCDs before and after proton irradiation and quantifies the associated degradation. A sensor was exposed to 217 MeV protons at a fluence of 8.4 x 10^10 protons cm^-2, corresponding to a displacement-damage dose more than an order of magnitude above the three-year expectation for representative mid-inclination and Sun-synchronous low-Earth orbits. A 55Fe source was used to compare the energy resolution of the beam-exposed quadrant to adjacent unexposed quadrants and a non-irradiated reference sensor. These measurements provide a quantitative assessment of radiation-induced spectral degradation in Skipper-CCDs and enable an estimate of the end-of-life X-ray energy resolution expected for DarkNESS operation in low-Earth orbit.

REGAL International Program: Analysis of experimental data for depletion code validation

The Rod-Extremity and Gadolinia AnaLysis (REGAL) Program is a joint international effort to expand the nuclide inventory experimental data for irradiated nuclear fuel, with a specific focus on addressing two challenging needs associated with the characterization of modern, high duty, nuclear fuel. The first challenge is filling the gaps in experimental nuclide inventory data for gadolinia (UO 2 –Gd 2 O 3 ) fuel rods. The huge absorption cross sections of Gd-155 and Gd-157 in the Gd dopant in these rods lead to atypical spatial self-shielding patterns and have an impact on the neutronic environment within the fuel assembly compared to regular UO 2 fuel rods. Additionally, the second challenge is investigating the impact of burnup gradients at rod extremities on fuel composition and neutron leakage, to provide relevant experimental data for assessing computational capabilities to model such impact. A benchmark has been defined as a first step in the development of best-estimate models in the preliminary phase of the experimental data evaluation. Comparison of experimental results obtained in Phase I of the program for two measured pressurized water reactor (PWR) samples, one UO 2 and one UO 2 –Gd 2 O 3 sample, with calculated results obtained with different computational tools based on the defined benchmark are presented and discussed.

SCALE depletion capabilities for molten salt reactors and other liquid-fueled systems

Nuclear reactor systems that use fuel dissolved in a liquid have the potential for enhanced safety characteristics, improved fuel-cycle outcomes, and more efficient isotope-production configurations. In these reactor systems, the fueled liquid may simultaneously undergo irradiation, physical and chemical removal processes, and fueling. The modeling and simulation of this transmutation and decay with material additions and removals is an ongoing research area. An accurate simulation tool is critical to the reactor and fuel-cycle design, reactor deployment, and source-term characterization for these advanced reactor systems. The work described herein involved implementing, testing, and applying the capability to perform reactor physics simulations within the Oak Ridge National Laboratory-developed SCALE suite for nuclear systems analyses and design, leveraging much of its pedigree in quality-assurance and reactor-analysis capabilities. The functionalities to simulate irradiation with material feeds and removals had been added in ORIGEN, and the TRITON reactor physics sequence was extended to calculate the total removed material and track external nonirradiated mixtures to estimate separate processing or waste streams. Results from these capabilities align with analytical expectations obtained from ORIGEN for simplified test cases and with expectations for a molten salt reactor application. This implementation, available with the SCALE 6.3 release, provides for a more efficient and accurate material accountability methodology, allowing for the characterization, design, and analysis of the complete isotopic material inventory of advanced liquid-fueled systems for a variety of applications.

A comprehensive analysis of transient pressure and rate data from CO 2 storage projects in a depleted pinnacle reef oil field complex, Michigan, USA

Pressure and rate data are commonly recorded as part of a basic monitoring program in CCS projects. This paper discusses the application of multiple analytical techniques to interpret pressure and rate transient data from CO 2 injection and storage operations. The techniques of interest, i.e., injection-falloff analysis, injectivity/productivity index analysis and pressure pulse arrival time analysis, are commonly used in the oil and gas industry to assess reservoir properties, but not well known in the CCS literature (especially the last two). Injection-falloff analysis involves log-log pressure derivative plotting for the falloff data and history-matching of the entire injection-falloff sequence to determine permeability. In the injectivity/productivity index analysis, rate-normalized pressure buildup is plotted against material balance time or ratio of cumulative injection to injection rate to determine the injectivity index (ratio of injection rate to stabilized pressure buildup) which can be related to the permeability-thickness product. The arrival time analysis identifies the arrival of a pressure disturbance (~0.1 psi change from ambient) to determine the hydraulic diffusivity from which permeability can be estimated. The applicability of these techniques is demonstrated via illustrative examples from multiple wells in different pinnacle carbonate reefs undergoing CO 2 -EOR in Northern Michigan. The paper ends with a discussion of the relative merits of each interpretive technique, as well as recommendations that could be useful for other field projects.
