Validation of Floating Node Method Using Three-Point Bend Doubler Under Quasi-Static Loading

The NASA Advanced Composite Project (ACP), an industry/government/university partnership, has embarked upon the task of developing technology that can aid in reducing the time line for structural certification of aircraft composite parts using a combination of technologies, one of which is high fidelity damage progression computational methods. Phase II of this project included a task for validating an approach based on the Floating Node Method combined with Directional Cohesive Elements (FNM-DCZE). This paper discusses predicted damage onset and growth in a three-point bend doubler specimen compared to experimental results. Sensitivity of the simulations to mesh refinement as well as key material properties and thermal effects are studied and reported. Overall, qualitative results suggest the main aspects of the damage progression have been captured, with the simulated damage morphology and sequence of events resembling closely what was observed experimentally. Quantitatively, the first load-peak is predicted. However, the re-loading observed in the experiments, after the first load peak, is not captured numerically, suggesting further investigation may be worth pursuing.

The optimization of self-phased arrays for diurnal motion tracking of synchronous satellites

The diurnal motion of a synchronous satellite necessitates mechanical tracking when a large aperture, high gain antenna is employed at the earth terminal. An alternative solution to this tracking problem is to use a self phased array consisting of a number of fixed pointed elements, each with moderate directivity. Non-mechanical tracking and adequate directive gain are achieved electronically by phase coherent summing of the element outputs. The element beamwidths provide overlapping area coverage of the satellite motion but introduce a diurnal variation into the array gain. The optimum element beamwidth and pointing direction of these elements can be obtained under the condition that the array gain is maximized simultaneously with the minimization of the diurnal variation.

Survey and development of finite elements for nonlinear structural analysis. Volume 1: Handbook for nonlinear finite elements

A survey of research efforts in the area of geometrically nonlinear finite elements is presented. The survey is intended to serve as a guide in the choice of nonlinear elements for specific problems, and as background to provide directions for new element developments. The elements are presented in a handbook format and are separated by type as beams, plates (or shallow shells), shells, and other elements. Within a given type, the elements are identified by the assumed displacement shapes and the forms of the nonlinear strain equations. Solution procedures are not discussed except when a particular element formulation poses special problems or capabilities in this regard. The main goal of the format is to provide quick access to a wide variety of element types, in a consistent presentation format, and to facilitate comparison and evaluation of different elements with regard to features, probable accuracy, and complexity.

Modeling and parameterization of horizontally inhomogeneous cloud radiative properties

One of the fundamental difficulties in modeling cloud fields is the large variability of cloud optical properties (liquid water content, reflectance, emissivity). The stratocumulus and cirrus clouds, under special consideration for FIRE, exhibit spatial variability on scales of 1 km or less. While it is impractical to model individual cloud elements, the research direction is to model a statistical ensembles of cloud elements with mean-cloud properties specified. The major areas of this investigation are: (1) analysis of cloud field properties; (2) intercomparison of cloud radiative model results with satellite observations; (3) radiative parameterization of cloud fields; and (4) development of improved cloud classification algorithms.

Application of finite-element method in the computation of temperature with emphasis on radiative exchanges.

Analyses pertaining to the solution of heat transfer problems in combined modes based on the finite-element method are presented. Two elements - a triangular element employing two spatial variables and a multi-faceted bar element employing one spatial variable - with nonlinear radiation on the boundaries are detailed. The radiative effects considered on the diffuse-gray surface elements include: (1) directional radiant fluxes from distant sources, (2) radiative exchanges including surfaces of prescribed temperatures, and (3) radiative exchanges including elements whose temperatures are not known a priori. The nonlinear part of the boundary condition is treated in two different ways: (1) a consistent linearization method, and (2) a direct energy distribution method. Applications of these elements together with solution algorithms to three sample problems exhibit solution capability and obtainable accuracy.

Unidirectional flexural pivot

A pair of generally coaxial mutually rotatable cylindrical outer ring members are held in spaced-apart relationship by three parallelogram-shaped, relatively thin, flexible, flat planar spring elements. These spring elements are substantially inextensible in length and are joined to the inside of the outer ring members and held in position by arcuate inner ring segments, three for each outer ring members, which respectively span an arc of substantially 120. The parallelogram shape of the spring elements provides a slanted interconnection between the outer ring members. The direction of slant, moreover, determines in which direction the spring elements can flex or bend unidirectionally to relieve the compression stress imparted thereto by any mutual angular rotation of the outer ring members.

Geometrical factor and directional response of single and multi-element particle telescopes.

After a general treatment of the gathering power of particle telescopes, exact formulae are presented for the geometrical factor and directional response of multielement cylindrically symmetric telescopes with circular or rectangular cross sections. Some useful approximations to these formulae are given. For the gathering power in arbitrary geometries, there is a discussion of applicable digital computer techniques focusing particularly on a Monte Carlo method.

SDMS: A scientific data management system

SDMS is a data base management system developed specifically to support scientific programming applications. It consists of a data definition program to define the forms of data bases, and FORTRAN-compatible subroutine calls to create and access data within them. Each SDMS data base contains one or more data sets. A data set has the form of a relation. Each column of a data set is defined to be either a key or data element. Key elements must be scalar. Data elements may also be vectors or matrices. The data elements in each row of the relation form an element set. SDMS permits direct storage and retrieval of an element set by specifying the corresponding key element values. To support the scientific environment, SDMS allows the dynamic creation of data bases via subroutine calls. It also allows intermediate or scratch data to be stored in temporary data bases which vanish at job end.

Electronically Steerable Spherical Array capabilities and interfaces

The development of the Electronically Steerable Spherical Array (ESSA) was started in 1975. ESSA provides the inertialess antenna needed by user satellites for communication over their large coverage angles towards the Tracking Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS). The performance of ESSA over large coverage angles is better than the performance provided by phased arrays. The primary difference between the two antenna types is the method of beam forming. The ESSA steers a beam by illuminating a set of elements which point in the desired direction. This set of elements is illuminated by a simple multipole switch called a switching power divider (SPD). Attention is given to details regarding the difference in performance between ESSA and phased arrays, the ESSA block diagram, the performance improvement achieved by phase compensation, power requirements, the four operating modes, multibeam operation, and the data interface.

An Alpha-p-x Analytical Instrument for Lunar Resource Investigations

An instrument using alpha backscattering, alpha-proton nuclear reactions, and x-ray production by alpha particles and other auxiliary sources can be used on lunar landers to provide detailed analytical information concerning the lunar surface material. This information is important scientifically and can be the basis for utilizing efficiently lunar resources to build lunar colonies in the future. This alpha particle instrument uses radioactive isotopes, silicon detectors for the alpha and proton modes, and mercuric iodide detectors operating at room temperature for the x-ray mode. The alpha and proton modes of the instrument can provide an analysis for all elements (except hydrogen) present in amounts greater than about 1 percent by atom. These modes have excellent sensitivity and accuracy for the lighter elements, in particular, directly determining the amount of oxygen in the lunar soil. This is an element of paramount significance for the lunar resource mission. The x-ray mode makes possible a determination of Ti, Fe, and other important metals with even greater accuracy. In general, the x-ray mode provides increased sensitivity for heavier elements, in many cases achieving a sensitivity of several hundred ppm.

Triangular spectral elements for incompressible fluid flow

We discuss the use of triangular elements in the spectral element method for direct simulation of incompressible flow. Triangles provide much greater geometric flexibility than quadrilateral elements and are better conditioned and more accurate when small angles arise. We employ a family of tensor product algorithms for triangles, allowing triangular elements to be handled with comparable arithmetic complexity to quadrilateral elements. The triangular discretizations are applied and validated on the Poisson equation. These discretizations are then applied to the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations and a laminar channel flow solution is given. These new triangular spectral elements can be combined with standard quadrilateral elements, yielding a general and flexible high order method for complex geometries in two dimensions.

Microwave dichroic plate

A dichroic plate for microwave energy includes an array of interlaced crossed slots or dipole elements. Each of the elements includes first and second crossed arms that are at approximately right angles to each other and aligned with X and Y axes. The elements are arranged so that the centers thereof are aligned parallel to the X and Y axes to form columns and rows, and the interlacing is such that a line between the centers of all adjacent elements has nonzero, differing components relative to the X and Y axes. In one embodiment, the spacing between adjacent arms of different, adjacent elements is the same along the X and Y axes, while in a second embodiment, the spacing between similarly directed arms of adjacent elements differs from the spacing between oppositely directed arms of adjacent elements.
