Semiconductor forms biomedical radiation probe

Semiconductor radiation dosimeter in the form of a slender probe is easily inserted into body tissue. The probe has a signal-to-noise ratio that is acceptable to recording equipment and provides realistic measurements of the spatial and energy distributions of radiant electrons and protons.

Neutron detector simultaneously measures fluence and dose equivalent

Neutron detector acts as both an area monitoring instrument and a criticality dosimeter by simultaneously measuring dose equivalent and fluence. The fluence is determined by activation of six foils one inch below the surface of the moderator. Dose equivalent is determined from activation of three interlocked foils at the center of the moderator.

Readout system for radiation detector

Improved electrical circuit determines the amount of light detected by a photomultiplier tube when its output signal is in the dark-current range of the tube. The low-intensity light to which the tube responds arises from a thermo-luminescent ionized dosimeter.

Experiment M404: Proton electron spectrometer

A series of experiments were performed during the Gemini 4 mission to acquire a detailed description of the radiation environment. Data from these experiments were used as source terms for the calculation of radiation doses received by the crewmembers. Comparison of theory with experimental data was accomplished by the use of dosimeters to monitor the integrated dose received by each crewmember. The instantaneous direction of the magnetic field of the earth relative to the spectrometer was used in the reduction of data because particle intensities were strongly directional with respect to the magnetic field. The simultaneous measurement of the external radiation environment and the radiation dose received by the crewmen during a mission was useful to evaluate and perfect calculational techniques.

Advanced dosimetry systems for the space transport and space station

Advanced dosimetry system concepts are described that will provide automated and instantaneous measurement of dose and particle spectra. Systems are proposed for measuring dose rate from cosmic radiation background to greater than 3600 rads/hr. Charged particle spectrometers, both internal and external to the spacecraft, are described for determining mixed field energy spectra and particle fluxes for both real time onboard and ground-based computer evaluation of the radiation hazard. Automated passive dosimetry systems consisting of thermoluminescent dosimeters and activation techniques are proposed for recording the dose levels for twelve or more crew members. This system will allow automatic onboard readout and data storage of the accumulated dose and can be transmitted to ground after readout or data records recovered with each crew rotation.

Experimental active and passive dosimetry systems for the NASA Skylab program

Active and passive dosimetry instrumentation to measure absorbed dose, charged particle spectra, and linear energy transfer spectra inside the command module and orbital workshop on the Skylab program were developed and tested. The active dosimetry system consists of one integral unit employing both a tissue equivalent ionization chamber and silicon solid state detectors. The instrument measures dose rates from 0.2 millirad/hour to 25 rads/hour, linear energy transfer spectra from 2.8 to 42.4 Kev/micron, and the proton and alpha particle energy spectra from 0.5 to 75 Mev. The active dosimeter is equipped with a portable radiation sensor for use in astronaut on-body and spacecraft shielding surveys during passage of the Skylab through significant space radiations. Data are transmitted in real time or are recorded by onboard spacecraft tape recorder for rapid evaluation of the radiation levels. The passive dosimetry systems consist of twelve (12) hard-mounted assemblies, each containing a variety of passive radiation sensors which are recoverable at the end of the mission for analysis.

TLD measurements of gamma heating in heavy elements.

Measurements and calculations of gamma heating in polyethylene and lead containers were done and compared. The objective was to provide a workable method of getting good values for gamma heating in in-pile experiments containing materials of high atomic numbers. It was inferred that a combination of thermoluminescent dosimeter measurements, using Bragg-Gray theory, with photon transport calculations using the ANISN computer program, would meet this objective.

Advancements in medicine from aerospace research.

Discussion of a NASA-sponsored medical program under which work is done by multidiscipline teams to provide an interface between aerospace and medicine. A prosthetic urethral valve, an ear oximeter for measurement of oxygen content in the blood, a radiation dosimeter and an electromyographic muscle trainer are noted as the products of this program.

Biology Division Habrobracon Experiment P-1079

Dosimetric analyses accumulated during the five-year period of the biosatellite program are summarized. These data are from a unique source placed in a unique optical bench, the biosatellite. Thus the multitudinous array of dosimeters was mandatory to give confidence in the experiment.
