Superconductivity in the bilayer Hubbard model: Two Fermi surfaces are better than one

Fully occupied or unoccupied bands in a solid are often considered inert and irrelevant to a material's low-energy properties. But the discovery of enhanced superconductivity in heavily electron-doped FeSe-derived superconductors poses questions about the possible role of incipient bands (those laying close to but not crossing the Fermi level) in pairing. To answer this question, researchers have studied pairing correlations in the bilayer Hubbard model, which has an incipient band for large interlayer hopping t⊥, using many-body perturbation theory and variational methods. They have generally found that superconductivity is enhanced as one of the bands approaches the Lifshitz transition and even when it becomes incipient. Here we address this question using the nonperturbative quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) dynamical cluster approximation (DCA) to study the bilayer Hubbard model's pairing correlations. We find that the model has robust s± pairing correlations in the large t⊥ limit, which can become stronger as one band is made incipient. While this behavior is linked to changes in the effective interaction, we further find that it is counteracted by a suppression of the intrinsic pair-field susceptibility and does not translate to an increased Tc. Our results demonstrate that the highest achievable transition temperatures in the bilayer Hubbard model occur when the system has two bands crossing the Fermi level.

DFT + DMFT study of dopant effects in the heavy-fermion compound CeCoIn 5

Here we study the dopant-induced inhomogeneity effect on the electronic properties of heavy fermion CeCoIn 5 using a combined approach of density functional theory (DFT) and dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). The inhomogeneity of the hybridization between Ce-4f and conduction electrons is introduced to impose the inequivalent Ce atoms with respect to the dopant. From the DFT to the DFT + DMFT results, we demonstrate a variation of the hybridization strength depending on the hole or electron doping. A drastic asymmetric mass renormalization could be reproduced in the DFT + DMFT calculation. Finally, the calculated Kondo temperature reflects the different development of the heavy quasiparticle states, depending on the dopant.

Loop-current charge density wave driven by long-range Coulomb repulsion on the kagomé lattice

Recent experiments on vanadium-based nonmagnetic kagomé metals A⁢V 3 ⁢Sb 5 ⁢(A=K,Rb,Cs) revealed evidence for possible spontaneous time-reversal symmetry (TRS) breaking in the charge density wave (CDW) ordered state. The long-sought-after quantum order of loop currents has been suggested as a candidate for the TRS breaking state. However, a microscopic model for the emergence of the loop-current CDW due to electronic correlations is still lacking. Here, in this work, we calculate the susceptibility of the real and imaginary bond orders on the kagomé lattice near van Hove filling, and reveal the importance of next-nearest-neighbor Coulomb repulsion V 2 in triggering the instability toward imaginary bond ordered CDW. The concrete effective single-orbital t–V 1 –V 2 model on the kagomé lattice is then studied, where t and V 1 are the hopping and Coulomb repulsion on the nearest-neighbor bonds. We obtain the mean-field ground states, analyze their properties, and determine the phase diagram in the plane spanned by V 1 and V 2 at van Hove filling. The region dominated by V 1 is occupied by a 2⁢a 0 ×2⁢a 0 real CDW insulator with the inverse of Star-of-David (ISD) bond configuration. Increasing V 2 indeed drives a first-order transition from ISD to stabilized loop-current insulators that exhibit four possible current patterns of different topological properties, leading to orbital Chern insulators. We then extend these results away from van Hove filling and show that electron doping helps the stabilization of loop currents, and gives rise to doped orbital Chern insulators with emergent Chern Fermi pockets carrying large Berry curvature and orbital magnetic moment. Our findings provide a concrete model realization of the loop-current Chern metal at the mean-field level for the TRS breaking normal state of the kagomé superconductors.

Higher-order topological and nodal superconducting transition-metal sulfides M S ( M = Nb and Ta )

Intrinsic topological superconducting materials are exotic and vital to develop the next-generation topological superconducting devices, topological quantum calculations, and quantum information technologies. Here, we predict the topological and nodal superconductivity of NiAs-type M ⁢S ( M = Nb and Ta) transition-metal sulfides. We reveal their higher-order topology nature with an index of Z 4 = 2. These materials have a higher T c than the Nb or Ta metal superconductors due to their flat band and strong electron-phonon coupling nature. Electron doping and lighter isotopes can effectively enhance the T c . In conclusion, our findings show that the M ⁢S ( M = Nb and Ta) systems can be platforms to study exotic physics in the higher-order topological superconductors, and provide a theoretical support to utilize them as the topological superconducting devices in the field of advanced topological quantum calculations and information technologies.

Confinement-Induced Chiral Edge Channel Interaction in Quantum Anomalous Hall Insulators

In quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulators, the interior is insulating but electrons can travel with zero resistance along one-dimensional (1D) conducting paths known as chiral edge channels (CECs). These CECs have been predicted to be confined to the 1D edges and exponentially decay in the two-dimensional (2D) bulk. Here, in this Letter, we present the results of a systematic study of QAH devices fashioned in a Hall bar geometry of different widths under gate voltages. At the charge neutral point, the QAH effect persists in a Hall bar device with a width of only ~7⁢2 nm, implying the intrinsic decaying length of CECs is less than ~3⁢6 nm. In the electron-doped regime, we find that the Hall resistance deviates quickly from the quantized value when the sample width is less than 1 μ⁢m. Our theoretical calculations suggest that the wave function of CEC first decays exponentially and then shows a long tail due to disorder-induced bulk states. Therefore, the deviation from the quantized Hall resistance in narrow QAH samples originates from the interaction between two opposite CECs mediated by disorder-induced bulk states in QAH insulators, consistent with our experimental observations.

Tablelike magnetocaloric effect and enhanced refrigerant capacity in EuO 1- δ thin films

The effect of electron doping of EuO 1- δ thin films through oxygen vacancies ( δ = 0, 0.025, and 0.09) upon the magnetocaloric response is presented here. The films each showed a paramagnetic to ferromagnetic transition around 65 K, with an additional magnetic ordering transition at higher temperatures in the oxygen deficient samples. All transitions are observed to be of second order. A maximum magnetic entropy change of 6.4 J/kg K over a field change of 2 T with a refrigerant capacity of 223 J/kg was found in the sample with δ = 0, and in all cases the refrigerant capacities of the thin films under study were found to exceed that reported for bulk EuO. Adjusting the oxygen content was shown to produce tablelike magnetocaloric effects, desirable for ideal Ericsson-cycle magnetic refrigeration. These films are thus excellent candidates for small-scale magnetic cooling technology in the liquid nitrogen temperature range.

Identifying topological superconductivity in two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides

Here we study the superconducting pairing instabilities and gap functions for prototypical two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) WS 2 , MoTe 2 , and MoS 2 in the 2H phase under both hole and electron doping at 10 K. Our first-principles quantum many-body Green's function approach allows us to treat the full d and p manifold of orbitals with strong spin-orbit coupling, yielding pairing predictions with material-specific detail. The resulting gap functions exhibit a variety of mixed-parity superconducting states, including s, p, d, f, d ± id, and p ± ip pairing modes. In particular, we predict 3% and 4% hole-doped WS 2 to be a chiral p ± ip topological superconductor. For 1% hole-doped MoS 2 , we find a competition between three doubly degenerate chiral and nonchiral instabilities. Overall, the relative pairing strengths are found to follow the Fermi-surface topology, due to nesting between the Fermi-surface sheets. Finally, we discuss our predictions in relation to available experimental data and classify the topology of the predicted superconducting pairing symmetries.

Structural changes induced by electric currents in a single crystal of Pr 2 CuO 4

We demonstrate an approach to the structural and electronic property modification of perovskites, focusing on Pr 2 CuO 4 , an undoped parent compound of a class of electron-doped copper-oxide superconductors. Currents were passed parallel or perpendicular to the copper oxygen layers with the voltage ramped up until a rapid drop in the resistivity was achieved, a process referred to as “flash.” The current was then further increased tenfold in current-control mode. This state was quenched by immersion into liquid nitrogen. Flash can drive many compounds into different atomic structures with new properties, whereas the quench freezes them into a long-lived state. Single-crystal neutron diffraction of as-grown and modified Pr 2 CuO 4 revealed a √10 ×√10 superlattice due to oxygen-vacancy order. The diffraction peak intensities of the superlattice of the modified sample were significantly enhanced relative to the pristine sample. Raman-active phonons in the modified sample were considerably sharper. Measurements of electrical resistivity, magnetization, and two-magnon Raman scattering indicate that the modification affected only the Pr-O layers, but not the Cu-O planes. These results point to enhanced oxygen-vacancy order in the modified samples well beyond what can be achieved without passing electrical current. Our work opens a new avenue toward electric field/quench control of structure and properties of layered perovskite oxides.

Particle-Hole Asymmetric Ferromagnetism and Spin Textures in the Triangular Hubbard-Hofstadter Model

In a lattice model subject to a perpendicular magnetic field, when the lattice constant is comparable to the magnetic length, one enters the “Hofstadter regime,” where continuum Landau levels become fractal magnetic Bloch bands. Strong mixing between bands alters the nature of the resulting quantum phases compared to the continuum limit; lattice potential, magnetic field, and Coulomb interaction must be treated on equal footing. Using determinant quantum Monte Carlo and density matrix renormalization group techniques, we study this regime numerically in the context of the Hubbard-Hofstadter model on a triangular lattice. In the field-filling phase diagram, we find a broad wedge-shaped region of ferromagnetic ground states for filling factor ν ≤ 1 , bounded below by filling factor ν = 1 and bounded above by half filling the lowest Hofstadter subband. We observe signatures of SU(2) quantum Hall ferromagnetism at filling factors ν = 1 and ν = 3 . The phases near ν = 1 are particle-hole asymmetric, and we observe a rapid decrease in ground-state spin polarization consistent with the formation of skyrmions only on the electron doped side. At large fields, above the ferromagnetic wedge, we observe a low-spin metallic region with spin correlations peaked at small momenta. We argue that the phenomenology of this region likely results from exchange interaction mixing fractal Hofstadter subbands. The phase diagram derived beyond the continuum limit points to a rich landscape to explore interaction effects in magnetic Bloch bands. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Receiving flat bands near the Fermi level in 1T-VSe2 by using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy

Here, we study the surface electronic structure of 1T-VSe 2 by means of angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy and uncover a dispersion-less emission located in the vicinity of the Fermi level. Its crystal momentum dependency reveals that it occupies large portions of the Brillouin zone (BZ), where no bulk band is expected. Upon electron doping (deposition of Rb-atoms), the system evolves in a surprising way. Besides the expected down-shifting of the bands, a splitting of both bulk and dispersion-less emission is observed. This peculiar behavior strongly suggests the intrinsic nature of the dispersion-less emission. Its characterization may therefore be relevant to a deeper understanding of the physics of transition metal dichalcogenides.

CHClF2 /F-22/ in the earth's atmosphere

Recent global measurements of CHClF2 (F-22) are reported. Originally, GC/MS techniques were used to obtain these data. Since then, significant advances using an O2-doped electron capture detector have been made in the analytical techniques, so that F-22 can be measured by EC/GC methods at ambient concentrations. The atmospheric burden of F-22 calculated from these measurements (average mixing ratio, mid-1979, approximately 45 pptv) is considerably greater than that expected from the estimates of direct industrial emissions (average mixing ratio, mid-1979, approximately 30 pptv). This difference is probably due to underestimates of F-22 emissions.

Preparation and characteristics of superconducting cuprate thin films: Nd(2-x)Ce(x)CuO4 and substituted Bi-system

Characteristics of the electron-doped-type Nd(2-x)Ce(x)CuO4 systems and substituted Bi2(Sr,Ln)3Cu2Oy system were systematically studied using the high quality thin-film samples. The Nd(2-x)Ce(x)CuO4 thin films with various Ce concentrations, x, were prepared by RF magnetron sputtering on SrTiO3 heated at around 500 C. After subsequent annealing at 1100 C in air, the films showed the c-axis orientation normal to the substrates. By means of the reducing treatment (annealing in a vacuum), superconductivity was induced for the films with 0.14 is less than or equal to x is less than or equal to 0.18. The superconductivity and transport properties of the films were strongly affected by the reducing treatment. The x = 0.15 film exhibited a sharp superconducting transition with zero resistivity at 22 K, in consistent with the diamagnetic properties. The resistivity of the films was fairly low with metallic characteristics, and the sight of the Hall coefficient was negative in the normal state. On the other hand, the normal-state optical measurements showed that the undoped Nd2CuO4 is a semiconductor with a charge transfer gap of 1.3 eV, and that, when Ce ions were doped, a plasma reflection due to the free-carriers came to be seen with the plasma frequency of 1.07 eV for 0.14 is less than or equal to x is less than or equal to 0.18. Moreover, x ray photoemission study revealed that the Cu valence of the film decreased for 2(+) for x = 0 to 1(+) for x = 0.15. These physical properties are in contrast with those of hole-doped-type cuprate superconductors. Bi2(Sr,Ln)3Cu2Oy thin films were also prepared on MgO substrates heated at 600 to 700 C by similar methods. It was found that the growth conditions for Bi-systems with two CuO2 planes were different for each composition and species of lanthanoid in the films. Moreover, preparation of Bi-system with three CuO2 planes was very difficult when lanthanoid atoms were doped in the system. Their electric transport properties and x ray photoemission spectroscopy were investigated. Carrier concentration and Cu valence were discussed with regard to the superconductivity.

Preparation and characteristics of superconducting cuprate thin films: Nd(2-x)Ce(x)CuO4 and substrated Bi-system

Characteristics of the electron-doped-type Nd(sub 2-x)Ce(sub x)CuO4 system and substituted Bi-system were studied using the high quality thin film samples grown by rf magnetron sputtering and/or subsequent heat treatment. The Nd(sub 2-x)Ce(sub x)CuO4 samples with excellent superconducting properties were obtained in thin films and their optical and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) studies were performed with regard to the Ce content and reducing treatment. Substituted BiSr-Ln-Cu-O thin films were prepared and growth conditions for Bi-system with 2-2-1-2 and 2-2-2-2 phases were found. Moreover, a new 2-2-1-2 phase in the simple Bi-Sr-Cu-O system was fabricated by thin film processing and 80 K superconductivity was obtained.

Electronic structure Fermi liquid theory of high Tc superconductors: Comparison of predictions with experiments

Predictions of local density functional (LDF) calculations of the electronic structure and transport properties of high T(sub c) superconductors are presented. As evidenced by the excellent agreement with both photoemission and positron annihilation experiments, a Fermi liquid nature of the 'normal' state of the high T(sub c) superconductors become clear for the metallic phase of these oxides. In addition, LDF predictions on the normal state transport properties are qualitatively in agreement with experiments on single crystals. It is emphasized that the signs of the Hall coefficients for the high T(sub c) superconductors are not consistent with the types of dopants (e.g., electron-doped or hole-doped) but are determined by the topology of the Fermi surfaces obtained from the LDF calculations.

Doping topological Dirac semimetal with magnetic impurities: Electronic structure of Mn-doped Cd 3 ⁢As 2

The prospect of transforming a Dirac topological semimetal (TSM) into a Weyl TSM phase, following doping by magnetic impurities, is central to TSM applications. The magnetic field from polarized 𝑑 levels of magnetic impurities produces a field with a sharp local structure. To what extent magnetic impurities act in the same manner as an applied field and what are the effects of such a field on the electronic structure of a Dirac TSM are the subject of this paper. We present electronic structure calculations of bulk Cd 3 ⁢As 2 with substitutional doping of Mn impurities in the dilute alloy range. Quasiparticle 𝐺⁡𝑊 (QS⁢𝐺⁡𝑊) ab initio electronic structure calculations are used in conjunction with 𝑘 · 𝑝 model Hamiltonian calculations. As expected, we observe the splitting of the Dirac points into pairs of Weyl points following the doping with Mn. We also show that the electronic structure of Mn-doped Cd 3⁢ As 2 can be emulated by the electronic structure of pristine Cd 3⁢ As 2 with an appropriate external magnetic field. Some properties of the conductivity of bulk Cd 3 ⁢As 2 for different magnetic field orientations are also investigated. Our results inform future opportunities for unique device functionality based on band structure tuning not found in conventional magnetic Weyl TSM.
