Generation of three-dimensional boundary-fitted curvilinear coordinate systems for wing/wing-tip geometries using the elliptic solver method

A three-dimensional elliptic solver technique is utilized to generate surface-fitted coordinates about wing/wing-tip configurations. The method is applicable to wings of arbitrary section profile and camber, leading-edge sweep, taper ratio, and spanwise thickness variation. The basic theory of three-dimensional elliptic mappings is developed along with a method to compute interior coordinate control functions. Examples of grids generated about several wing/wing-tip geometries are given. A 49 x 33 x 17 grid requires about 3 minutes of CPU time on a CYBER 203 computer.

Scatter of elastic waves by a thin flat elliptical inhomogeneity

Elastodynamic fields of a single, flat, elliptical inhomogeneity embedded in an infinite elastic medium subjected to plane time harmonic waves are studied. Scattered displacement amplitudes and stress intensities are obtained in series form for an incident wave in an arbitrary direction. The cases of a penny shaped crack and an elliptical crack are given as examples. The analysis is valid for alpha a up to about two, where alpha is longitudinal wave number and a is a typical geometric parameter.

Formal convergence characteristics of elliptically constrained incremental Newton-Raphson algorithms

Various aspects of the convergence, uniqueness, and existence properties associated with solutions generated via the elliptically constrained incremental Newton-Raphson (ECINR) algorithm are analyzed. Several theorems are developed, and the formal behavior of the elliptically constrained scheme developed by Padovan (1981) is discussed in detail. Consideration is given to global and local rates of convergence, to the determination of the occurrence of safety zones wherein the algorithm yields inherently convergent results, to formal limitations on the class of functions which the scheme can be applied to solve, and to single and multidimensional formalisms on existence uniqueness and convergence. Special attention is given to functions whose Jacobian matrix exhibit positive, negative, semi and indefinite properties. Several significant advantages of ECINR over the classical INR are mentioned.

Adaptive grids generated by elliptic systems

It is pointed out that a finite difference grid which moves with the solution of the partial differential equation being solved can improve the accuracy and efficiency of a numerical algorithm. This technique is particularly advantageous in the solution of problems involving boundary layers or shocks where a poorly chosen grid may give a numerical solution which is useless because of poor resolution or extreme oscillations. The present investigation is concerned with the development of a scheme which does not excessively distort the grid. The grid generation algorithm is based on the numerical solution of a system of elliptic differential equations. Holst and Brown (1981) have used a preliminary solution to move points on the boundary of the physical region and then resolved the problem on a new grid generated by an elliptic system. In the current investigation, the grid movement and the solution will develop simultaneously. The solution is used to modify the generating equations, thereby controlling the grid point distributions.

Analysis of surface pressure distributions on two elliptic missile configurations

The state-of-the-art methods for predicting missile aerodynamic characteristics do not accurately predict the loads of missile configurations with bodies of elliptic cross section. An investigation of this problem found significant nonlinear flow disturbance on the windward surface of a 3:1 elliptic body at Mach 2.50 in addition to the nonlinear vortical flows which develop on the leeside. A nonlinear full-potential flow method (NCOREL) was found to provide extremely accurate pressure estimates for attached-flow conditions and the vortex prediction method contained in the state-of-the-art method (NOSEVTX) was shown to accurately calculate body vortices and leeside pressures.

Numerical generation of composite three dimensional grids by quasilinear elliptic systems

A three-dimensional grid generation technique designed to numerically construct a boundary-conforming grid within a three-dimensional region bounded by a closed surface is described. The boundary values are generated numerically by a modified elliptic system and are used to compute grid control parameters that are contained in the elliptic systems. The interior grid distribution is governed by the distribution of points on the boundary as well as by the boundary's geometric shape. The composite three-dimensional grid remains both continuous and smooth across the surface of juncture between any two adjoining subregions. The details of the method and its implementation are presented, displaying numerical results for three-dimensional composite grid for a wing-body combination and surface grids.

Stellar populations in local group dwarf elliptical galaxies. I - NGC 147

A color-magnitude diagram of NGC 147 to an I magnitude of 23 is presented. The stellar population in the outer parts of this elliptical galaxy resembles that of the globular clusters of the Milky Way. Quantitative comparison of the giant branch with those of globular clusters yields a mean metallicity of -1.2 + or - 0.2, making NGC 147 a part of the general correlation between mass and metallicity seen in ellipticals. The giant branch appears to be broad, which suggests a metallicity dispersion. The absence of asymptotic giant branch stars at luminosities above that of the red giant branch tip sets an upper limit of 10 percent for the fraction of stars in this NGC 147 field that have ages less than 12 Gyr. This result contrasts with the situation in some of the related, but less massive, dwarf spheroidal systems. If the choice is made to assume, rather than determine the stellar content of NGC 147, a distance of 630 + or - 50 kpc is derived, similar to that of M31.

Determining highly elliptical earth orbits with VLBI and Delta-VLBI

This paper shows the feasibility of using Very Long Baseline Interferometric (VLBI) data acquired by the Deep Space Network to navigate highly elliptical earth orbiting satellites. The planned mission orbit of the Ion Release Module of the Active Magnetospheric Particle Tracer Explorers is used as a reference for developing strategies and provides the first opportunity for a possible flight demonstration with a spacecraft in a highly elliptical orbit. The navigation accuracy improvements achievable with VLBI and Delta-VLBI data types are determined for comparison with the capabilities of a reference Doppler strategy. The results show that strategies using wideband Delta-VLBI measurements taken near periapse perform best, determining apoapse position to an order of magnitude better than conventional Doppler, while also substantially reducing the required antenna support.

The cores of elliptical galaxies

An analysis of the apparent core radii and seeing profiles of seeing-deconvolved high resolution CCD surface photometry profiles for 42 nearby elliptical galaxies indicates that 14 galaxies have resolvable cores between 1.5 and 5.0 arcsec. Half of the resolved galaxies match the core profile of M87 over an extended radial change, indicating the possible existence of massive nuclear black holes or radially anisotropic velocity fields in these objects. The remaining half show even larger deviations from isothermality. These and other results presented support the formation of elliptical galaxies from photogalactic gas clouds, rather than as products of a dissipationless merger hierarchy or repeated cannibalization of less massive stellar systems.

Analysis of elliptical and circular microstrip antennas using moment method

A method of calculating the input impedance of either a circular or a slightly elliptical microstrip antenna excited by a coaxial probe is presented. Using the reaction integral equation and the exact dyadic Green's function, the finite substrate thickness is taken into account in the formulation. Good agreement with experimental results for an elliptical patch is obtained and a design procedure for a circularly polarized antenna is presented.

Metallicity and the level of the ultraviolet rising branch in elliptical galaxies

This final report concerns a project to study the systematics of the ultraviolet flux level in elliptical galaxies. Prior to the inception of this work, the systematic behavior of the ultraviolet flux level was basically unknown and ultraviolet fluxes were observed to vary greatly from galaxy to galaxy. There was a suggestion, however, that there might be a dependence of ultraviolet flux on galaxy metallicity, but the correlation was based on just six galaxies. IUE spectra of elliptical galaxies have been reanalyzed and placed on a consistent, homogenous flux system. The major conclusion is a confirmation of the original hypothesis: galaxies with stronger Mg2 lines show enhanced ultraviolet flux.

Near-infrared photometry and stellar populations in dwarf elliptical and irregular galaxies

Studies of three different types of dwarf galaxies have been conducted, taking into account low surface brightness (LSB) dwarf irregular (dI) galaxies, dwarf elliptical (dE) galaxies, and blue compact dwarf galaxies (BCDGs). Near-infrared observations for a large sample of BCDGs have been reported by Thuan (1983). The present paper is concerned with complementary near-infrared observations for a large sample of LSB dI and dE galaxies, and, in addition, with a few additional BCDG observations. In a discussion of dwarf elliptical galaxies, attention is given to an infrared color-color diagram, optical-infrared colors and burst ages, and the UVK color plane. Low surface brightness dwarf irregular galaxies and blue compact dwarf galaxies are considered along with the possible evolutionary scenarios which may link LSB dIs, BCDGs, and dEs.

Numerical study of hydrogen-air supersonic combustion by using elliptic and parabolized equations

The two-dimensional Navier-Stokes and species continuity equations are used to investigate supersonic chemically reacting flow problems which are related to scramjet-engine configurations. A global two-step finite-rate chemistry model is employed to represent the hydrogen-air combustion in the flow. An algebraic turbulent model is adopted for turbulent flow calculations. The explicit unsplit MacCormack finite-difference algorithm is used to develop a computer program suitable for a vector processing computer. The computer program developed is then used to integrate the system of the governing equations in time until convergence is attained. The chemistry source terms in the species continuity equations are evaluated implicitly to alleviate stiffness associated with fast chemical reactions. The problems solved by the elliptic code are re-investigated by using a set of two-dimensional parabolized Navier-Stokes and species equations. A linearized fully-coupled fully-implicit finite difference algorithm is used to develop a second computer code which solves the governing equations by marching in spce rather than time, resulting in a considerable saving in computer resources. Results obtained by using the parabolized formulation are compared with the results obtained by using the fully-elliptic equations. The comparisons indicate fairly good agreement of the results of the two formulations.

Cooling flows in ellipticals and the nature of radio galaxies

Analytical arguments are presented to demonstrate that the morphology of the host galaxy will influence the type of radio signature emitted by the nucleus, which is in many cases presumed to a black hole. The types of matter inflows and consequent shapes of the accretion disks around the nuclei of spiral and elliptical galaxies are discussed. If the inflowing matter is predominantly cold and clumpy, then stars will tend to form and only the available hot gas will descend into the center. Collimated radio jets will appear only in the presence of hot interstellar gas in elliptical galaxies and not in spiral galaxies. The implications of the predictions for the interpretation of observational data on, e.g., BL Lac objects and N galaxies are discussed.

Navigating highly elliptical earth orbiters with simultaneous VLBI from orthogonal baseline pairs

Navigation strategies for determining highly elliptical orbits with VLBI are described. The predicted performance of wideband VLBI and Delta VLBI measurements obtained by orthogonal baseline pairs are compared for a 16-hr equatorial orbit. It is observed that the one-sigma apogee position accuracy improves two orders of magnitude to the meter level when Delta VLBI measurements are added to coherent Doppler and range, and the simpler VLBI strategy provides nearly the same orbit accuracy. The effects of differential measurement noise and acquisition geometry on orbit accuracy are investigated. The data reveal that quasar position uncertainty limits the accuracy of wideband Delta VLBI measurements, and that polar motion and baseline uncertainties and offsets between station clocks affect the wideband VLBI data. It is noted that differential one-way range (DOR) has performance nearly equal to that of the more complex Delta DOR and is recommended for use on spacecraft in high elliptical orbits.

Wind tunnel studies of circulation control elliptical airfoils

Effects of blown jets on the lift and drag of cambered elliptical airfoils are described. Performance changes due to a splitter plate attached to the lower surface of an elliptical airfoil near the trailing edge with and without blowing are indicated. Lift and drag characteristics of airfoils with two blown jets are compared with airfoils with single blowing jets. Airfoil designs that vary the location of a second jet relative to a fixed jet are described.

Two-photon ionization of atomic hydrogen with elliptically polarized light

The theory of two-photon ionization of a hydrogenic state in the nonrelativistic dipole approximation is generalized for elliptically polarized light. An application to the metastable 2S state of atomic hydrogen is made. Significant differences in the angular distribution of the outgoing electrons are found depending upon the polarization of the photons. It is claimed that two-photon ionization employing elliptically polarized photons from lasers may provide an additional test for the theories of multiphoton ionization.
