Reasoning about energy in qualitative simulation

While possible behaviors of a mechanism that are consistent with an incomplete state of knowledge can be predicted through qualitative modeling and simulation, spurious behaviors corresponding to no solution of any ordinary differential equation consistent with the model may be generated. The present method for energy-related reasoning eliminates an important source of spurious behaviors, as demonstrated by its application to a nonlinear, proportional-integral controlled. It is shown that such qualitative properties of such a system as stability and zero-offset control are captured by the simulation.

Solution of Boltzmann equation for highly nonequilibrium diatomic gases rotational translational energy relaxation

The direct simulation Monte Carlo method is applied to solve the Boltzmann equation for collisions between internally excited diatomic gases in highly nonequilibrium states. The semiclassical transition probability is incorporated in the simulation for energy exchange between rotational and translational energy. The results provide details on the fundamental mechanisms of gas kinetics where analytical methods are impractical. The validity of the local Maxwellian assumption and relaxation time, rotational-translational energy transition, and a velocity analysis of the inelastic collision are discussed in detail.

Steps toward quantum simulations of hadronization and energy loss in dense matter

A framework for simulating the real-time dynamics of composite particles in a simple model of dense matter that is amenable to quantum computers is developed. As a demonstration, we perform classical simulations of heavy-hadrons propagating through a dense medium in the Schwinger model. Measurements of the time-dependent energy and charge density are used to identify mechanisms responsible for energy loss and hadron production (hadronization). A study of entanglement dynamics highlights the importance of quantum coherence between the particles that make up the dense medium. Throughout this work, care is taken to isolate, and remove, phenomena that arise solely from a finite lattice spacing. It is found that signatures of entanglement are more sensitive to lattice artifacts than other observables. Toward quantum simulations, we present an efficient method and the corresponding quantum circuits for preparing ground states in the presence of heavy mesons. Finally, these circuits are used to estimate the resources required to simulate in-medium energy loss and hadronization in the Schwinger model using quantum computers.

Quantum Computing and Simulations for Energy-Related Applications

Quantum Information Science (QIS) is an emerging field that has the potential to cause revolutionary advances in many areas of science and engineering, and nations around the world are vying for dominance in the field. To support DOE urgent task to make sure the U.S. wins the quantum race, in Spring of 2019 NETL started to establish and maintain QIS competency by focusing on energy-related applications. After more than five years’ hard-working, NETL QUEST (quantum for energy systems & technologies) team has made great progress on quantum sensing and quantum computing for energy applications. Significant outcomes have been achieved. To report our research progress and to propose new research directions, in this presentation at the American Physical Society (APS) annual meeting, I'm highlighting the progress of QUEST team on quantum computing for energy-related applications.

Effect of simulated weightlessness on energy metabolism in the rat

Results of measurements of food uptake and body weight changes occurring in rats suspended from a harness so that the antigravity muscles were not used for locomotion are presented. The rats were tested in pairs, with both in a harness but only one suspended off its hind legs; this section lasted 7 days. A second phase of the experiment involved feeding the nonsuspended rat the same amount of food the experimental rat had consumed the previous day. All rats experienced decreased in body weight and food intake in the first stage, while in the second stage the suspended rat lost more weight. The total oxygen uptake, CO2 output, and rate of C-14O2 production were depressed in the suspended rats, then returned to normal levels once the rats were back on the ground. It is concluded that the gross metabolic processes are unaffected by simulated weightlessness.

Numerical simulation of flare energy build-up and release via Joule dissipation

A new numerical MHD model is developed to study the evolution of an active region due to photospheric converging motion, which leads to magnetic-energy buildup in the form of electric current. Because this new MHD model has incorporated finite conductivity, the energy conversion occurs from magnetic mode to thermal mode through Joule dissipation. In order to test the causality relationship between the occurrence of flare and photospheric motion, a multiple-pole configuration with neutral point is used. Using these results it is found that in addition to the converging motion, the initial magnetic-field configuration and the redistribution of the magnetic flux at photospheric level enhance the possibility for the development of a flare.

A potential energy scaling Monte Carlo simulation of thin film nucleation and growth

The initial growth of thin Ge fims on the (100) surface of an Fe substrate is investigated theoretically by means of Monte Carlo simulations based on a potential-energy-scaling technique. The substrate is modeled as a 20 x 20-square array with periodic boundary conditions, as described by Heinbockel et al. (1983), and the movement of surface atoms under the influence of the substrate interaction potential and the lateral interaction of neighboring atoms is explored via continuous updating (on the time scale of single events) of the potential energy at each site in the array. Results for the clustering of nine dispersed atoms over 1.0 s at 600 K and for deposition at 5 x 10 to the -14th/sq cm s over 2.0 s at 500 K are presented graphically.

SIMWEST - A simulation model for wind energy storage systems

This paper describes a comprehensive and efficient computer program for the modeling of wind energy systems with storage. The level of detail of SIMWEST (SImulation Model for Wind Energy STorage) is consistent with evaluating the economic feasibility as well as the general performance of wind energy systems with energy storage options. The software package consists of two basic programs and a library of system, environmental, and control components. The first program is a precompiler which allows the library components to be put together in building block form. The second program performs the technoeconomic system analysis with the required input/output, and the integration of system dynamics. An example of the application of the SIMWEST program to a current 100 kW wind energy storage system is given.

infrastore [SWR-26-077]

Infrastore is time-series storage for energy-systems simulations, backed by HDF5 + SQLite, with Rust, Python, Julia, gRPC, and CLI bindings. It is a Rust library for managing time-series data in power-systems and energy simulations. Numerical arrays are persisted in HDF5, and the metadata associating each array with its owning component lives in SQLite. Identical arrays are stored once and shared through content addressing. It ships native Rust, Python (PyO3), and Julia (C ABI) interfaces, the infrastore command-line tool, and a read-only gRPC server with a Rust client. Evaluation of solar thermal power plants using economic and performance simulations

An energy cost analysis is presented for central receiver power plants with thermal storage and point focusing power plants with electrical storage. The present approach is based on optimizing the size of the plant to give the minimum energy cost (in mills/kWe hr) of an annual plant energy production. The optimization is done by considering the trade-off between the collector field size and the storage capacity for a given engine size. The energy cost is determined by the plant cost and performance. The performance is estimated by simulating the behavior of the plant under typical weather conditions. Plant capital and operational costs are estimated based on the size and performance of different components. This methodology is translated into computer programs for automatic and consistent evaluation.
