On phosphorus chemical shift anisotropy in metal (IV) phosphates and phosphonates: A 31 P NMR experimental study

The phosphorus chemical shift anisotropies, 31 PΔcs, and asymmetry parameters η were measured by the 31 P{ 1 H} NMR experiments in static and low-frequency spinning samples of the zirconium phosphates and phosphonates and also in the mixed Zr (IV)/Sn (IV) phosphate/phosphonate material. The data obtained have shown a 111 connectivity in the HPO 4 and PO 3 groups, which does not change at modification and intercalation of the materials. The 31 PΔcs values of the phosphonate groups (43–49 ppm) significantly surpass the values characterizing the HPO 4 groups (23–37 ppm). The 31 P Δcs values obtained for the metal (IV) phosphates were discussed in terms of P-O distances. Finally, the 31 P chemical shift anisotropy parameters can help at elucidation of local structures in phosphate and phosphonate materials.

Experimental study on nanoparticle injection by using a lab-scale wellbore system

After long-term underground storage of CO 2 gas, leakage generated from the cement annulus in the wellbore system is often detected due to unbalanced pressure, chemical attack, etc. Here in this paper, nanoparticle injection technology is introduced to inject different types of nanoparticles into the cementitious material for repairing the leakage paths through electrochemical means. The pressure vessel is designed and built to provide a realistic underground environment with high pressure and high temperature. The testing results are evaluated by the saturate-drying method, charge-passed method, and X-ray microscopy (XRM) test. The results consistently show that all types of nanoparticles tested in this paper can be successfully driven into the cement annulus within the wellbore system. The pressure (6.89 MPa) and temperature (80 °C) in the pressure vessel, and the surrounding rock can directly affect the injection effectiveness. The nanoparticle injection technology is proven to be beneficial to the cracked cement annulus for preventing the leakage of CO 2 gas through the lab-scale wellbore system.

Experimental study of a tri-functional propane hydronic heat pump

This study investigates the performance of a propane hydronic heat pump system for space cooling, heating, and water heating applications, focusing on various operational conditions, with a total refrigerant charge below 1200 g. Cooling performance was evaluated at different outdoor temperatures, compressor stages (capacity levels), and water flow rates. The results showed that the coefficient of performance (COP) for cooling was higher at lower outdoor temperatures, with peak values exceeding 5.0 under low-stage operation and lower water flow rate. The cooling capacity increased with higher flow rates and compressor stages, reaching 12 kW. Space heating performance, evaluated at ambient temperatures ranging from −8.3 °C to 16.7 °C, revealed a decrease in COP with lower temperatures. However, high-stage operation maintained higher heating capacities even at low temperatures. The system demonstrated high Heating Seasonal Performance Factors (HSPF), exceeding 10.0. For water heating, the COP decreased with lower ambient temperatures and higher supply water temperatures. The system efficiently heated an 189-L water tank, outperforming conventional water heaters, with process COPs exceeding 4.0 under cooling-season conditions. Despite some efficiency loss due to defrosting at low temperatures, the propane heat pump consistently delivered strong performance. Seasonal energy efficiency ratios (SEER) and seasonal heating COP values indicated significant overall efficiency. The study concludes that propane is a promising refrigerant for heat pump systems, with future research needed to future reduce total system charge and optimize system performance through advanced controls and heat exchanger designs.

Experimental study of crystallization fouling by calcium carbonate: Effects of surface structure and material

We report mitigation of crystallization fouling on heat transfer surface is crucial for developing highly efficient desalination techniques, because the tenacious and porous crystal layer can drastically deteriorate system efficiency. Surface modification is a potential approach to decrease scale formation and promote crystal removal, but some of the mechanisms between crystallization and substrate properties are still not fully understood. In this study, we use dual-angle microscopic visualization and image processing to quantify three-dimensional crystallization behavior and analyze the impact of surface structure and material. The transition of crystal size and distance with roughness and wettability are identified from statistical analysis. The determination of crystal porosity and effective thermal conductivity is enabled by visualized geometry and measured deposition mass. This study shed lights on potential strategies of surface modification to mitigate scaling in desalination by enhancing scale removal and localizing crystal growth.
