Distinguishing the XUV-induced Coulomb explosion dynamics of iodobenzene using covariance analysis

The primary and secondary fragmentation dynamics of iodobenzene following its ionization at 120 eV were determined using three-dimensional velocity map imaging and covariance analysis. Site-selective iodine 4d ionization was used to populate a range of excited polycationic parent states, which primarily broke apart at the carbon-iodine bond to produce I+ with phenyl or phenyl-like cations (C n H x + or C n H, with n = 1 – 6 and x = 1 – 5). The molecular products were produced with varying degrees of internal excitation and dehydrogenation, leading to stable and unstable outcomes. This further allowed the secondary dynamics of C 6 H x 2+ intermediates to be distinguished using native-frame covariance analysis, which isolated these processes in their own centre-of-mass reference frames. Furthermore, the mass resolution of the imaging mass spectrometer used for these measurements enabled the primary and secondary reaction channels to be specified at the level of individual hydrogen atoms, demonstrating the ability of covariance analysis to comprehensively measure the competing fragmentation channels of aryl cations, including those involving intermediate steps.

Constraining explosive nucleosynthesis by indirect reaction methods at storage rings using unstable beams in batch mode

Nuclear reaction studies on unstable isotopes can strongly help in improving our understanding of nucleosynthesis in stars. Indirect approaches to determining astrophysical reaction rates are increasingly common-place and undergoing continuous refinement. Of particular interest is the use of such indirect techniques at storage rings, which, among other aspects, allow to recycle rare unstable beams. Here, we propose to investigate the reaction rates of astrophysical interest using indirect methods (surrogate, Trojan horse, etc.) in reverse kinematics at the IMP-CAS storage ring. Long lived radioactive ion beams, produced remotely, can be accelerated, and made to interact with light targets. The proposed reactions are 85 Kr(p, p’γ), 85 Kr(d, pγ), constraining the neutron flux in an s-process branching point, 79 Se(p, p’γ), 79 Se(d, pγ), constraining the temperature in s-process nucleosyntheses, and 59 Fe(d, pγ), constraining core collapse supernovae.

A SynBio explosion: a whole new world for Rubisco engineering

The first Escherichia coli synthetic biology (SynBio) system to successfully heterologously assemble chloroplast Rubisco represented the culmination of decades of Rubisco biogenesis research (Aigner et al., 2017). This system for Arabidopsis Rubisco ushered in a new era of higher throughput Rubisco studies, and has since been adapted for a limited number of other Rubiscos, accelerating both fundamental and applied Rubisco research. Archer et al. (2025) have developed new SynBio systems to assemble a larger variety of C 3 Rubiscos and the first C 4 and monocot Rubiscos, greatly expanding crop Rubisco engineering capabilities. Their explorations of chaperone selectivity and versatility could enable rapid production of SynBio systems for additional species.

Black hole explosions as probes of new physics

The final stage of black hole evaporation is a potent probe of physics beyond the Standard Model: Hawking-Bekenstein radiation may be affected by quantum gravity “memory burden effects,” or by the presence of “dark,” beyond-the-Standard-Model degrees of freedom in ways that are testable with high-energy gamma-ray observations. We argue that information on either scenario can best be inferred from measurements of the evaporation’s light curve and by correlating observations at complementary energies. We offer several new analytical insights in how such observations map on the fundamental properties of the evaporating black holes and of the possible exotic particles they can evaporate into. Calculation of Velocities from Explosive Shot Test Fast-Frame Imagery

A cylinder of the experimental HE is detonated inside of an aquarium and sequential fast-frame images are taken of the resulting shock wave. We wish to use the sequence of images to extract quantitative data regarding the detonation velocity and velocity of the shock wave which can then be used to tune the parameters of the equation of state for the experimental HE material.
