Specular reflections (“glint”) of the inner beams in a gas-filled cylindrical hohlraum

Herein we report on the experimental measurement of specular reflection (“glint”) of laser beams off the hohlraum wall in inertial confinement fusion experiments at the National Ignition Facility. In a hohlraum, glinted light can escape the opposite laser entrance hole of the hohlraum and is a potential laser energy loss mechanism. The total measured glint on the inner cones of beams is measured to be less than 8 TW (when using the full National Ignition Facility laser), which is <2% of incident peak power. The simulated x-ray flux exceeds the measurement by 10%–20%, and glinted laser light is unable to account for this discrepancy. Similar inner beam glint was measured for ρ = 0.3 and 0.6 mg/cc gas fill hohlraums, but no glint was detected for 1.2 mg/cc densities. Inner beam glint is dominated by the lowest angle 21.5 beams within a 23.5 quad, and it is at most 30% sensitive to different quad polarization arrangements.

Dependence of Heat Removal Rate of Pebble-Based Rods on Inter-Pebble Matrix Fill Fraction

Carbon pebble rods are a promising candidate for use in high heat flux regions of magnetic fusion energy reactor walls. Under high (10 – 50 MW/m 2 ) heat loads, carbon pebble rods release hot pebbles from the exposed surface, carrying away heat as the pebble rod surface recedes. In this work, we show that the surface recession rate during heating can be adjusted by changing the mechanical strength of the extruded rods, modifying the heat removal rate; this is accomplished here by varying the fill fraction of the inter-pebble matrix. A three-dimensional finite element model is presented that captures many experimental observations, including the sphere temperature and the surface recession rate. The model predicts that pebble release is caused by thermally driven crack propagation through the matrix and that the matrix strength against breaking is the single most important material parameter setting the pebble release rate; this prediction is supported by experimental results.

Ground and excited states of even-numbered Hubbard ring at half-filling: comparison of the extended Gutzwiller approach with exact diagonalization

It remains a great challenge in condensed matter physics to develop a method to treat strongly correlated many-body systems with balanced accuracy and efficiency. We introduce an extended Gutzwiller (EG) method incorporating a manifold technique, which builds an effective manifold of the many-body Hilbert space, to describe the ground- and excited-state properties of strongly correlated electrons. Here we systematically apply an EG projector onto the ground and excited states of a non-interacting system. Diagonalization of the true Hamiltonian within the manifold formed by the resulting EG wavefunctions gives the approximate ground and excited states of the correlated system. To validate this technique, we implement it on even-numbered fermionic Hubbard rings at half-filling with periodic boundary conditions, and compare the results with the exact diagonalization (ED) method. The EG method is capable of generating high-quality ground and low-lying excited state wavefunctions, as evidenced by the high overlaps of wavefunctions between the EG and ED methods. Favorable comparisons are also achieved for other quantities including the total energy, the double occupancy, the total spin and the staggered magnetization. With the capability of accessing the excited states, the EG method can capture the essential features of the one-electron removal spectral function that contains contributions from states deep in the excited spectrum. Finally, we provide an outlook on the application of this method on large extended systems.

Thermoelectric transport of the half-filled lowest Landau level in a p -type Ge/SiGe heterostructure

In this work, we investigate the thermoelectric transport properties of the half-filled lowest Landau level v = 1 / 2 in a gated two-dimensional hole system in a strained Ge/SiGe heterostructure. The electron-diffusion dominated regime is achieved below 600 mK, where the diffusion thermopower S x x d at v = 1 / 2 shows a linear temperature dependence. In contrast, the diffusion-dominated Nernst signal S x y d of v = 1 / 2 is found to approach zero, which is independent of the measurement configuration (sweeping magnetic field at a fixed hole density or sweeping the density by a gate at a fixed magnetic field).

Langevin simulations of the half-filled cubic Holstein model

Over the past several years, reliable quantum Monte Carlo results for the charge density wave transition temperature T cdw of the half-filled two-dimensional Holstein model in square and honeycomb lattices have become available for the first time. Here, exploiting the further development of numerical methodology, here we present results in three dimensions, which are made possible through the use of Langevin evolution of the quantum phonon degrees of freedom. In addition to determining T cdw from the scaling of the charge correlations, we also examine the nature of charge order at general wave vectors for different temperatures, couplings, and phonon frequencies, and the behavior of the spectral function and specific heat.

Coupled dimer and bond-order-wave order in the quarter-filled one-dimensional Kondo lattice model

Motivated by experiments on the organic compound (Per) 2 [Pt(mnt) 2 ], we study the ground state of the onedimensional Kondo lattice model at quarter filling with the density matrix renormalization group method. Here, we show a coupled dimer and bond-order-wave (BOW) state in the weak-coupling regime for the localized spins and itinerant electrons, respectively. The quantum phase transitions for the dimer and the BOW orders occur at the same critical coupling parameter J c , with the opening of a charge gap. The emergence of the combination of dimer and BOW order agrees with the experimental findings of the simultaneous Peierls and spin-Peierls transitions at low temperatures, which provides a theoretical understanding of such a phase transition. We also show that the localized spins in this insulating state have quasi-long-ranged spin correlations with collinear configurations, which resemble the classical dimer order in the absence of a magnetic order.

Graviton chirality and topological order in the half-filled Landau level

The fractional quantum Hall state at the Landau level filling factor 5/2 is extremely interesting because it is likely the first non-Abelian state, but its precise nature remains unclear after decades of study. Here we demonstrate this can be resolved by studying the chirality of its graviton excitations, using circularly polarized Raman scattering. We discuss the advantage of this bulk probe over the existing edge probes.

Hybridization-driven strong anharmonicity in Yb-filled skutterudites

A high-pressure study of the structural and thermal transport properties is carried out on one of the most efficient filled skutterudites, $\mathrm{Yb_{0.3}Co_4Sb_{12}}$, to understand the relatively low thermal conductivity behavior in this family. By combining x-ray diffraction and Raman scattering measurements, we detect a phase transition at around 12.4 GPa. The mode Grüneisen parameters of the observed phonon modes are obtained from the determined bulk modulus and the phonon frequency shifts with pressure. The strong anharmonicity in this material is demonstrated by the obtained large average Grüneisen parameter. We also find the depressed group velocity within the low-frequency range, the flat guest mode avoided crossing with the acoustic-phonon mode, and the significant contribution of optical phonons. The hybridization of the guest atom and host lattice and the related enhanced anharmonicity are suggested to account for the low lattice thermal conductivity in the studied system. So, these findings provide new insight into how phonon-phonon interactions lower lattice thermal conductivity in this important thermoelectric family.

Phase diagram of twisted bilayer graphene at filling factor $v = ±3$

Here, we study the correlated insulating phases of twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) in the absence of lattice strain at integer filling $v = ±3$. Using the self-consistent Hartree-Fock method on a particle-hole symmetric model and allowing translation symmetry breaking terms, we obtain the phase diagram with respect to the ratio of AA interlayer hopping (w 0 ) and AB interlayer hopping (w 1 ). When the interlayer hopping ratio is close to the chiral limit (w 0 /w 1 ≲ 0.5), a quantum anomalous Hall state with Chern number v c = ±1 can be observed consistent with previous studies. Around the realistic value w 0 /w 1 ≈ 0.8, we find a spin and valley polarized, translation symmetry breaking, state with C 2⁢z T symmetry, a charge gap and a doubling of the moiré unit cell, dubbed theC 2⁢z T stripe phase. The real-space total charge distribution of this C 2⁢z T stripe phase in the flat band limit does not have modulation between different moiré unit cells, although the charge density in each layer is modulated, and the translation symmetry is strongly broken. Other symmetries, including C 2⁢z , C 2⁢x , particle-hole symmetry P, and the topology of the C 2⁢z T stripe phase, are also discussed in detail. We observed braiding and annihilation of the Dirac nodes by continuously turning on the order parameter to its fully self-consistent value, and provide a detailed explanation of the mechanism for the charge gap opening despite preserving C 2⁢z T and valley U⁡(1) symmetries. In the transition region between the quantum anomalous Hall phase and the C 2⁢z T stripe phase, we find an additional competing state with comparable energy corresponding to a phase with a tripling of the moiré unit cell.

Mott insulators in moiré transition metal dichalcogenides at fractional fillings: Slave-rotor mean-field theory

In this study, we study a slave-rotor mean-field theory of an extended Hubbard model, applicable to transition metal dichalcogenide moiré systems, that captures both the formation of Wigner crystals as well as exotic spin states on top of these charge backgrounds. Phase diagrams are mapped out for different choices of long-range Coulomb repulsion strength, reproducing several experimentally found Wigner crystal states. Assuming unbroken time-reversal symmetry, we find several spin-liquid states as well as dimer states at fractional fillings. While spin dimer states are always found to have the lowest mean-field energy, several spin-liquid states are energetically competitive and may be stabilized by including gauge fluctuations or further interaction terms. We further discuss possible experimental signatures of these states pertinent to two-dimensional moiré heterostructures.

Ground-state order in magic-angle graphene at filling ν = - 3 : A full-scale density matrix renormalization group study

Here we investigate twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) at filling ν = -3 in the presence of realistic heterostrain. Strain amplifies the band dispersion and drives the system beyond the strong-coupling regime of previous theoretical studies. We use DMRG to conduct an unbiased, large-scale numerical calculations that include all spin and valley degrees of freedom, up to bond dimension χ = 24576. We establish a global phase diagram that unifies a number of theoretical and experimental results. Near zero strain we find an intervalley-coherent quantized anomalous Hall (QAH-IVC) state, a competitive strong-coupling order that evaded past numerical studies. A tiny strain around 0.05% drives a transition into an incommensurate Kekulé spiral (IKS) phase, supporting the mean-field prediction in [Kwan, Phys. Rev. X 11, 041063 (2021)2160-330810.1103/PhysRevX.11.041063]. Even higher strains above 0.2% favor a flavor-symmetric metallic order, which may explain metals found at ν = -3 in many experiments.

Attractive Su-Schrieffer-Heeger-Hubbard model on a square lattice away from half-filling

The Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model, with bond phonons modulating electron tunneling, is a paradigmatic electron-phonon model that hosts an antiferromagnetic order to bond order transition at half-filling. In the presence of a repulsive Hubbard interaction, the antiferromagnetic phase is enhanced, but the phase transition remains first order. Here, we explore the physics of the SSH model with an attractive Hubbard interaction, which hosts an interesting interplay among charge order, s-wave pairing, and bond order. Using the numerically exact determinant quantum Monte Carlo method, we show that both charge order, present at weak electron-phonon coupling, and bond order, at large coupling, give way to s-wave pairing when the system is doped. Lastly, we demonstrate that the SSH electron-phonon interaction competes with the attractive Hubbard interaction and reduces the s-wave pairing correlation.

Fill and dump measurement of the neutron lifetime using an asymmetric magneto-gravitational trap

The past two decades have yielded several new measurements and reanalysis of older measurements of the neutron lifetime. These have led to a 4.4 standard deviation discrepancy between the most precise measurements of the neutron decay rate producing protons in cold neutron beams and the most precise lifetime measured in neutron storage experiments. Measurements using different techniques are important for investigating whether there are unidentified systematic effects in any of the measurements. In this paper we report a new measurement using the Los Alamos asymmetric magneto-gravitational trap where the surviving neutrons are counted external to the trap using the fill and dump method. In this work, the new measurement gives a free neutron lifetime of $τ_n$ = 876.3(2.4) stat (0.8) syst . Although this measurement is not as precise, it is in statistical agreement with previous results using in situ counting in the same apparatus.

The theory is formulated in terms of the trial states describing the Girvin–MacDonald–Platzman mode and its fermionic counterpart. These modes are superpartners of each other in a concrete sense, which we elucidate.

Orbital Chern Insulator and Quantum Phase Diagram of a Kagome Electron System with Half-Filled Flat Bands

In this work, we study the quantum phase diagram of electrons on kagome lattice with half-filled lowest flat bands by considering the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg interaction J, and short-range Coulomb interaction V. In the weak J regime, we identify a fully spin-polarized phase. The presence of finite V drives a spontaneous chiral current, which makes the system an orbital Chern insulator by contributing an orbital magnetization. Such an out-of-plane orbital magnetization allows the presence of a Chern insulating phase independent of the spin orientation in contrast to the spin-orbit coupling induced Chern insulator that disappears with inplane ferromagnetism constrained by symmetry. Such a symmetry difference provides a criterion to distinguish the physical origin of topological responses in kagome systems. The orbital Chern insulator is robust against small coupling J. By further increasing J, we find that the ferromagnetic topological phase is suppressed, which first becomes partially polarized and then enters a nonmagnetic phase with spin and charge nematicity. The frustrated flat band allows the spin and Coulomb interaction to play an essential role in determining the quantum phases.

Increased Ion Temperature and Neutron Yield Observed in Magnetized Indirectly Driven $\mathrm{D_2}$-Filled Capsule Implosions on the National Ignition Facility

Here, the application of an external 26 Tesla axial magnetic field to a D 2 gas-filled capsule indirectly driven on the National Ignition Facility is observed to increase the ion temperature by 40% and the neutron yield by a factor of 3.2 in a hot spot with areal density and temperature approaching what is required for fusion ignition. The improvements are determined from energy spectral measurements of the 2.45 MeV neutrons from the D(d, n) 3 He reaction, and the compressed central core B field is estimated to be ~4.9 kT using the 14.1 MeV secondary neutrons from the D(T, n) 4 He reactions. The experiments use a 30 kV pulsed-power system to deliver a ~ 3 μs current pulse to a solenoidal coil wrapped around a novel high-electrical-resistivity AuTa 4 hohlraum. Radiation magnetohydrodynamic simulations are consistent with the experiment

Chern Insulators at Integer and Fractional Filling in Moiré Pentalayer Graphene

The advent of moiré platforms for engineered quantum matter has led to discoveries of integer and fractional quantum anomalous Hall effects, with predictions for correlation-driven topological states based on electron crystallization. Here, we report an array of trivial and topological insulators formed in a moiré lattice of rhomobohedral pentalayer graphene (R5G). At a doping of one electron per moiré unit cell ( ν = 1 ), we see a correlated insulator with a Chern number that can be tuned between C = 0 and + 1 by an electric displacement field. This is accompanied by a series of additional Chern insulators with C = + 1 originating from fractional fillings of the moiré lattice— ν = 1 / 4 , 1 / 3 , and 2 / 3 —associated with the formation of moiré-driven topological electronic crystals. At ν = 2 / 3 the system exhibits an integer quantum anomalous Hall effect at zero magnetic field, but further develops hints of an incipient C = 2 / 3 fractional Chern insulator in a modest field. Our results establish moiré R5G as a fertile platform for studying the competition and potential intertwining of integer and fractional Chern insulators. Fiber Optic Temperature Sensor Using Dual Air- Filled Fabry-Pérot Cavities With Variable Pressure

We present an approach for high temperature measurement using a pair of fiber-optic Fabry–Pérot (FP) cavities filled with gas of identical but variable pressure. One of the FPs (reference FP) is placed in the cold zone with a known temperature. The temperature of the measuring FP can be deduced by the spectral fringe shift vs. pressure of the two FPs. This method does not require measurement of the pressure or the knowledge of the optical properties of the gas. The use of gas as the sensing material and the measurement mechanism also implies long-term stability and eliminates the cross-sensitivity to strain. We fabricated the sensors and tested them for measuring temperature up to 800 °C. Here, the sensor shows good linearity in the range. Long-term test conducted at 800 °C exhibited the stability of the sensor with fluctuations of ≤0.3% over a duration exceeding 100 hours.
