Heat treat fixture and method of heat treating

A heat treating fixture is disclosed in which the shape of the metal specimen is maintained by cold rolled steel support plates. Glide sheets of stainless steel, coated with boron nitride, in contact with each face of the metal specimens, allow for lateral expansion of the metal specimens without binding. Grooved support bars separate the glide sheets from the upper and lower support plates and allow flow of quenching fluid to the metal specimen.

New Configuration for Compression-Test Fixture

Gravity-loades axial-compression test fixture is operated by raising lower platen and specimen against weighted upper platen. Wheel turns nut on threaded rod to move lower platen up or down. Limiting rods prevent further upward movement if sample buckles.

Prototype wash water renovation system integration with government-furnished wash fixture

The requirements of a significant quantity of proposed life sciences experiments in Shuttle payloads for available wash water to support cleansing operations has provided the incentive to develop a technique for wash water renovation. A prototype wash water waste renovation system which has the capability to process the waste water and return it to a state adequate for reuse in a typical cleansing fixture designed to support life science experiments was investigated. The resulting technology is to support other developments efforts pertaining to water reclamation by serving as a pretreatment step for subsequent reclamation procedures.

Testing Fixture For Microwave Integrated Circuits

Testing fixture facilitates radio-frequency characterization of microwave and millimeter-wave integrated circuits. Includes base onto which two cosine-tapered ridge waveguide-to-microstrip transitions fastened. Length and profile of taper determined analytically to provide maximum bandwidth and minimum insertion loss. Each cosine taper provides transformation from high impedance of waveguide to characteristic impedance of microstrip. Used in conjunction with automatic network analyzer to provide user with deembedded scattering parameters of device under test. Operates from 26.5 to 40.0 GHz, but operation extends to much higher frequencies.

O-Ring-Testing Fixture

Fixture used to evalute properties of O-rings of various materials. Hydraulic actuator positions plug in housing, creating controlled, variable gap in O-ring glands formed by grooves in plug and by inner wall of housing. Creates controlled axial and radial gaps between sealing surfaces around ring so effectiveness of material in maintaining seal determined under dynamic conditions.

O-Ring-Testing Fixture

Fixture tests O-rings for sealing ability under dynamic conditions after extended periods of compression. Hydraulic cylinder moves plug in housing. Taper of 15 degrees on plug and cavity of housing ensures that gap created between O-ring under test and wall of cavity. Secondary O-rings above and below test ring maintain pressure applied to test ring. Evaluates effects of variety of parameters, including temperature, pressure, rate of pressurization, rate and magnitude of radial gap movement, and pretest compression time.

Fully articulated four-point-bend loading fixture

A fully articulated four-point bend loading fixture for Modulus of Rupture (MOR) and fracture toughness specimens utilizes an upper loading plate in combination with a lower loading plate. The lower plate has a pair of spring loaded ball bearings which seat in V-shaped grooves located in the upper plate. The ball bearings are carried in the arms of the lower plate. A load is applied to the specimen through steel rollers, one large roller and one smaller roller each located on both the upper and lower plates. The large rollers have needle roller bearings which enable a single loading roller to rotate relative to the plate to which it is attached.

Fixture For Testing Ball Bearings Under Radial Loads

Proposed fixture for mounting large ball bearings during tests facilitates application of variable, known radial loads, and prevent gross movement of bearing radial or axial directions. Load applied through Belleville spring washers to collar restrained by carrier ring. Load applied smoothly because collar and outer race of bearing flex in carrier ring. Inner race mounted on shaft rotated during application load.

Autonomous berthing/unberthing of a Work Attachment Mechanism/Work Attachment Fixture (WAM/WAF)

Discussed here is the autonomous berthing of a Work Attachment Mechanism/Work Attachment Fixture (WAM/WAF) developed by NASA for berthing and docking applications in space. The WAM/WAF system enables fast and reliable berthing (unberthing) of space hardware. A successful operation of the WAM/WAF requires that the WAM motor velocity be precisely controlled. The operating principle and the design of the WAM/WAF is described as well as the development of a control system used to regulate the WAM motor velocity. The results of an experiment in which the WAM/WAF is used to handle an orbital replacement unit are given.

Holding Fixture For Making Piezoelectric Acoustic Sensors

Vacuum holding device provides quick and easy method of bonding together two strips of thin film with fast-setting epoxy adhesive. Fixture holds films in place by vacuum while adhesive applied, maintaining uniform bond line between films, providing internal connection port between nickel coats on films for center conductor of coaxial cable, and eliminating need to clean up excessive adhesive. Used to fabricate acoustic sensors for use in ambulatory fetal heart monitors. Potential for other heart-monitoring applications and other applications in which acoustic sensors used.

Approaches to control of the large angle magnetic suspension test fixture

The Large Angle Magnetic Suspension Test Fixture is a five degree-of-freedom system, developed and built at NASA Langley Research Center. It is intended for study of control techniques in magnetic suspension systems with large angular capabilities. In this study, steps have been taken to prove the system in practice, using the existing hardware. A classical control approach, using dual phase advance compensators, is applied in simulation and hardware. A single decoupled degree-of-freedom of the system is stabilized and controlled in simulation. The procedure is then employed for all five degrees-of-freedom. The design and implementation of an analog and a digital controller are described. Results from simulation and the actual system are compared and analyzed. The ability to the system to sustain suspension over a large angular range has been proven in hardware.

Large angle magnetic suspension test fixture

Progress made under the subject grant in the period from 1 Nov. 1992 to 31 May 1993 is presented. The research involves the continued development of the Large Angle Magnetic Suspension Test Fixture (LAMSTF) and also the recommissioning of an additional piece of exisiting hardware. During the period in question, the initial configuration of LAMSTF was completed and made routinely and reliably operational. A digital phase advance controller was completed and documented. The goal of a controlled 360 deg rotation was achieved. Work started on the recommissioning of the Annular Suspension and Pointing System (ASPS). Work completed during the report period included: modeling; position sensing; controller; support of the Second International Symposium on Magnetic Suspension Technology; and recommissioning of the Annular Suspension and Pointing System.

Analysis, modelling and simulation of the large-angle magnetic suspension test fixture

The large-angle magnetic suspension test fixture (LAMSTF) research project is described which is based on a sophisticated finite element computer program, VF/GFUN, for calculating magnetic fields. The LAMSTF design includes eddy current paths the effect of which on system dynamics is being studied to modify the system dynamic model and the digital controller. Linearized equations of motions have been developed for system modelling and analysis of controllers.
