NASA/Princeton digital avionics flight test facility

This paper describes a general-aviation digital avionics flight-test facility being jointly developed by the Flight Dynamics Laboratory of Princeton University and NASA/Langley Research Center. This facility consists of the Princeton avionics research aircraft (ARA) and NASA/Langley's digital avionics research (DARE) system. The ARA is a fully instrumented five-degree-of-freedom fly-by-wire aircraft. The DARE system contains a state-of-the-art flight computer system and receiving equipment that permits use of the NASA/Wallops Flight Center's position-tracking ground-based display-generation and ground-to-air digital-data-link equipment. The DARE/ARA system will be used for flight evaluation of advanced control, guidance, and display concepts developed as part of NASA/Langley Research Center's general aviation terminal area operations program.

A lateral guidance algorithm to reduce the post-aerobraking burn requirements for a lift-modulated orbital transfer vehicle

A lateral guidance algorithm which controls the location of the line of intersection between the actual and desired orbital planes (the hinge line) is developed for the aerobraking phase of a lift-modulated orbital transfer vehicle. The on-board targeting algorithm associated with this lateral guidance algorithm is simple and concise which is very desirable since computation time and space are limited on an on-board flight computer. A variational equation which describes the movement of the hinge line is derived. Simple relationships between the plane error, the desired hinge line position, the position out-of-plane error, and the velocity out-of-plane error are found. A computer simulation is developed to test the lateral guidance algorithm for a variety of operating conditions. The algorithm does reduce the total burn magnitude needed to achieve the desired orbit by allowing the plane correction and perigee-raising burn to be combined in a single maneuver. The algorithm performs well under vacuum perigee dispersions, pot-hole density disturbance, and thick atmospheres. The results for many different operating conditions are presented.

A Comparative Study of Three Methodologies for Modeling Dynamic Stall

During the past two decades, there has been an increased reliance on the use of computational fluid dynamics methods for modeling rotors in high speed forward flight. Computational methods are being developed for modeling the shock induced loads on the advancing side, first-principles based modeling of the trailing wake evolution, and for retreating blade stall. The retreating blade dynamic stall problem has received particular attention, because the large variations in lift and pitching moments encountered in dynamic stall can lead to blade vibrations and pitch link fatigue. Restricting to aerodynamics, the numerical prediction of dynamic stall is still a complex and challenging CFD problem, that, even in two dimensions at low speed, gathers the major difficulties of aerodynamics, such as the grid resolution requirements for the viscous phenomena at leading-edge bubbles or in mixing-layers, the bias of the numerical viscosity, and the major difficulties of the physical modeling, such as the turbulence models, the transition models, whose both determinant influences, already present in static maximal-lift or stall computations, are emphasized by the dynamic aspect of the phenomena.

Software for Engineering Simulations of a Spacecraft

Spacecraft Engineering Simulation II (SES II) is a C-language computer program for simulating diverse aspects of operation of a spacecraft characterized by either three or six degrees of freedom. A functional model in SES can include a trajectory flight plan; a submodel of a flight computer running navigational and flight-control software; and submodels of the environment, the dynamics of the spacecraft, and sensor inputs and outputs. SES II features a modular, object-oriented programming style. SES II supports event-based simulations, which, in turn, create an easily adaptable simulation environment in which many different types of trajectories can be simulated by use of the same software. The simulation output consists largely of flight data. SES II can be used to perform optimization and Monte Carlo dispersion simulations. It can also be used to perform simulations for multiple spacecraft. In addition to its generic simulation capabilities, SES offers special capabilities for space-shuttle simulations: for this purpose, it incorporates submodels of the space-shuttle dynamics and a C-language version of the guidance, navigation, and control components of the space-shuttle flight software.

Avionics for a Small Robotic Inspection Spacecraft

A report describes the tentative design of the avionics of the Mini-AERCam -- a proposed 7.5-in. (approximately 19-cm)-diameter spacecraft that would contain three digital video cameras to be used in visual inspection of the exterior of a larger spacecraft (a space shuttle or the International Space Station). The Mini-AERCam would maneuver by use of its own miniature thrusters under radio control by astronauts inside the larger spacecraft. The design of the Mini-AERCam avionics is subject to a number of constraints, most of which can be summarized as severely competing requirements to maximize radiation hardness and maneuvering, image-acquisition, and data-communication capabilities while minimizing cost, size, and power consumption. The report discusses the design constraints, the engineering approach to satisfying the constraints, and the resulting iterations of the design. The report places special emphasis on the design of a flight computer that would (1) acquire position and orientation data from a Global Positioning System receiver and a microelectromechanical gyroscope, respectively; (2) perform all flight-control (including thruster-control) computations in real time; and (3) control video, tracking, power, and illumination systems.

Improving the on-board computing capability of the NASA Multimission Modular Spacecraft

This paper presents the development of onboard computing improvements for NASA's Multimission Modular Spacecraft. The first MMS spacecraft being enhanced by an additional flight computer is the Explorer Platform. The selection process for both the flight hardware (MIL-STD-1750A Co-Processor) and flight software (Ada high level language) are discussed, followed by the lessons learned during the last three years.

V/STOL AND digital avionics system for UH-1H

A hardware and software system for the Bell UH-1H helicopter was developed that provides sophisticated navigation, guidance, control, display, and data acquisition capabilities for performing terminal area navigation, guidance and control research. Two Sperry 1819B general purpose digital computers were used. One contains the development software that performs all the specified system flight computations. The second computer is available to NASA for experimental programs that run simultaneously with the other computer programs and which may, at the push of a button, replace selected computer computations. Other features that provide research flexibility include keyboard selectable gains and parameters and software generated alphanumeric and CRT displays.

The design, development, and flight testing of a modern-control-designed autoland system

This paper discusses the design, development, and flight test results of a full-state feedback modern-controls-designed autoland system - the Digital Integrated Automatic Landing System (DIALS). The lateral and longitudinal control laws were designed by formulating a linear quadratic regulator with disturbances problem. Although the designs were independent of each other, in implementation cross-coupling of the lateral and longitudinal variables does occur. A brief discussion of the control modes - localizer capture, localizer track, decrab, glideslope capture, glideslope track, and flare - and the modifications made to the basic design during the simulation phase to achieve desired performance is given. Some of the efforts required to implement the system in the flight computers and some problems encountered in the ground hardware simulation checkout are discussed. Finally, flight test data is presented for this system which performed 10 'hands off' automatic landings. The flight test data includes the performance of the aircraft in mild, gust, and wind shear conditions.

Design considerations for flight test of a fault inferring nonlinear detection system algorithm for avionics sensors

This paper summarizes the modifications made to the design of a fault inferring nonlinear detection system (FINDS) algorithm to accommodate flight computer constraints and the resulting impact on the algorithm performance. An overview of the flight data-driven FINDS algorithm is presented. This is followed by a brief analysis of the effects of modifications to the algorithm on program size and execution speed. Significant improvements in estimation performance for the aircraft states and normal operating sensor biases, which have resulted from improved noise design parameters and a new steady-state wind model, are documented. The aircraft state and sensor bias estimation performances of the algorithm's extended Kalman filter are presented as a function of update frequency of the piecewise constant filter gains. The results of a new detection system strategy and failure detection performance, as a function of an update frequency, are also presented.

Status report and preliminary results of the spacecraft control laboratory experiment

The Spacecraft Control Laboratory Experiment (SCOLE) was conceived to provide a physical test bed for investigation of control techniques for large flexible spacecraft. The SCOLE problem is defined as two design challenges. The first challenge is to design control laws for a mathematical model of a large antenna attached to the space shuttle by a long flexible mast. The second challenge is to design and implement a control scheme on a laboratory representation of the structure modelled in the first part. Control sensors and actuators are typical of those which the control designer would have to deal with on an actual spacecraft. The primary control processing computer is representative of the capacity and speed which may be expected in actual flight computers. A brief description is given of the laboratory apparatus along with some preliminary results of structural dynamics tests and actuator effectiveness tests.

High performance computing system for flight simulation at NASA Langley

The computer architecture and components used in the NASA Langley Advanced Real-Time Simulation System (ARTSS) are briefly described and illustrated with diagrams and graphs. Particular attention is given to the advanced Convex C220 processing units, the UNIX-based operating system, the software interface to the fiber-optic-linked Computer Automated Measurement and Control system, configuration-management and real-time supervisor software, ARTSS hardware modifications, and the current implementation status. Simulation applications considered include the Transport Systems Research Vehicle, the Differential Maneuvering Simulator, the General Aviation Simulator, and the Visual Motion Simulator.

The NASA MERIT program - Developing new concepts for accurate flight planning

It is noted that the rising cost of aviation fuel has necessitated the development of a new approach to upper air forecasting for flight planning. It is shown that the spatial resolution of the present weather forecast models used in fully automated computer flight planning is an important accuracy-limiting factor, and it is proposed that man be put back into the system, although not in the way he has been used in the past. A new approach is proposed which uses the application of man-computer interactive display techniques to upper air forecasting to retain the fine scale features of the atmosphere inherent in the present data base in order to provide a more accurate and cost effective flight plan. It is pointed out that, as a result of NASA research, the hardware required for this approach already exists.

Computer program performs aerothermodynamic flight test data correlation

Computer program plots flight test data /stored on magnetic tape during the flight/ with comparative data from other tapes /design and post-flight predictions/. Information as to which measurements are on each tape, the order in which they appear, and the exact time span is supplied by the source of the data.
