High-Fidelity Simulations of Lift+Cruise VTOL Urban Air Mobility Concept Aircraft in Hover

This paper presents progress of high-fidelity multidisciplinary simulations for the NASA lift+cruise vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) urban air mobility concept aircraft in hover. The study focuses on the unsteady flow solutions featuring strong wake interactions between rotors and the airframe. The simulations couple a high-fidelity aerodynamic model with a comprehensive rotorcraft aeromechanics tool with rotor rotation-speed trim. The aerodynamic model is based on the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations using the one-equation Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model with rotation correction. Unsteady aerodynamic flows are computed on a dynamic, deformable, unstructured, overset grid system. An integrated overset-grid assembler is used to construct the composite grid from 23 component grids and facilitate communications between individual component grids. Rotor performance and airframe forces and moments are computed and compared on two unstructured grids. The study demonstrates capabilities of high-fidelity multidisciplinary analysis tools to capture the strong unsteady flowfield around this multi-rotor aircraft in hover.

Control and Optimization of Energy Storage System in Power Distribution System

The widespread adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and transportation electrification is encumbered by two chief barriers: i) the limited driving range of EVs in the market today and ii) inadequate fast-charging infrastructure for long-distance trips. Extreme fast charging (XFC) technology can recharge EVs in less than 10 minutes for 200 miles range. Firstly, a novel robust optimization-based mixed integer linear programming model is proposed to size a battery energy storage system (BESS) and PV system in an XFCS. In this part, it is assumed that the sizing and location of the XFCS are known. Secondly, the aforesaid assumption is relaxed, and a strategic multi-period coordinated planning model is proposed to optimally site and size BESS-assisted charging stations in a highway transportation network and PV systems in a power distribution network by considering the coupling between both networks. Optimal operation and control of BESS-assisted EV charging stations are vital to alleviate the adverse impact of extreme fast charging of EVs on the host power network. A joint solution is proposed to mitigate the steady state and transient impact of extremefast charging of EVs and ensure grid-friendly integration of XFCSs with the host grid. Lastly, to make the operation of the XFCS cost-effective, a multi-layered energy management framework is proposed for the XFCS by considering forecast uncertainties, monthly demand charges reduction, and BESS degradation.

Technical Learning and Integration of Interns in Advanced Protection Lab Space: Enhancements to Testbed and Experiments to Improve Workflows for Producing Datasets

This report presents a successful technical learning integration of student interns in the Advanced Protection Laboratory space, located in the Grid Research Integration and Deployment Center (GRID-C) at the Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The Advanced Protection Laboratory was created for the primary goal of supporting DOE’s research projects and technical staff at ORNL. As a secondary goal, the space was used for collaborating with ORNL’s intern programs, providing support to the lab’s mentors and student interns. In 2024, three student interns spent a summer in the Advanced Protection lab space and were involved in the DarkNet Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) project. The students had a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience with communication and protective relay equipment focused on information technology, data analytics, and cybersecurity. Experiences in the lab space with real equipment and software integration offer education and professional development for students, which is especially important because of a need in the energy industry to recruit highly skilled power and communication engineers.

Integration of Electrolysis Systems Into Isolated Microgrid Systems at Extreme Cold Climates

Isolated microgrid systems are generally used to power communities in remote locations where transmission line installations are cost prohibitive. These systems are usually powered by diesel generators, delivering expensive energy with high carbon emissions. However, most of these communities have special geographic access to renewable energy. These special conditions make it interesting to investigate the deployment of renewable energies and storage solutions. Within this scope, this paper analyses the integration of water electrolysis systems into off-grid communities, simulating the electrolyzer as well as the whole electrical grid in real time.

Flexible AI Models for Grid Resilience

The rapid growth in size and complexity of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) models has led to increased energy demands, posing a threat to the reliability of the existing power grid. This project addresses the challenge of highly intermittent and energy-intensive inference workloads by (1) developing fidelity-adaptive neural networks capable of dynamic response to grid conditions and (2) integrating these networks with power flow simulations to assess their impact on power grid reliability. We will explore both top-down and bottom-up approaches to create hierarchies of submodels that provide a controlled trade-off between power draw and prediction accuracy. The top-down method utilizes NN pruning to reduce a flagship model into progressively smaller, energy-efficient variants. The bottom-up approach employs geometrically principled weight setting strategies to construct depth-efficient models from the ground up. A real-time hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) platform will be developed to simulate a scaled AC power grid, integrating live AI workload power draw and enabling dynamic model switching in response to grid feedback. This work will provide a novel framework for evaluating the impact of flexible AI/ML workloads on grid performance and establish new methodologies for energy-aware computing in data centers. The outcomes will demonstrate that adaptive AI/ML can play a critical role in improving grid stability while advancing NREL's leadership in energy-efficient computing research.

Reliability considerations in the placement of control system components

This paper presents a methodology, along with applications to a grid type structure, for incorporating reliability considerations in the decision for actuator placement on large space structures. The method involves the minimization of a criterion that considers mission life and the reliability of the system components. It is assumed that the actuator gains are to be readjusted following failures, but their locations cannot be changed. The goal of the design is to suppress vibrations of the grid and the integral square of the grid modal amplitudes is used as a measure of performance of the control system. When reliability of the actuators is considered, a more pertinent measure is the expected value of the integral; that is, the sum of the squares of the modal amplitudes for each possible failure state considered, multiplied by the probability that the failure state will occur. For a given set of actuator locations, the optimal criterion may be graphed as a function of the ratio of the mean time to failure of the components and the design mission life or reservicing interval. The best location of the actuators is typically different for a short mission life than for a long one.

Adaptive mesh schemes based on grid speeds

Successful methods for generating solution adaptive grids using grid speeds are reviewed in this paper. The computational mesh is constructed by integrating the grid speeds as opposed to solving a steady grid equation. Advantages and disadvantages for each grid speed scheme are discussed and a number of examples of grids produced with the various schemes are presented. Suggestions are made for the development of new schemes based upon a form of Euler's expansion formula for the grid and the equi-distribution of some parameter over the mesh. Consideration is also given to grid skewness for the multidimensional schemes.

Grid Parameters and Voltage Estimation Approach Integrating Data-Driven Converter Model

With Measurements of grid voltage and current are essential for the optimal operation of the grid protection and control (P&C) systems. Grid parameters vary through time during the faults and especially in the converter interfaced resources (CIRs) rich power grid, and thus accurate estimation is critical to avoid the mis-operation of the P&C systems. In this paper, a moving horizon estimation (MHE) as an observer is devised and applied to estimate the grid line parameters and grid voltages for protection enhancement. Due to the proprietary and confidentiality of CIRs, the proposed approach uses the black-box model to represent their dynamics. Leveraging the easily accessible measurements of output current from the black-box model of CIR and voltage at the point of common coupling, the proposed method estimates the grid impedance and grid voltage during normal and faulty operating conditions. The performance shows that the optimization-based observer was able to closely observe the accurate states and parameters, which can be utilized by the P&C systems.

Performance Evaluation of a Microgrid System with Grid-Forming and Grid-Following Inverters with Diesel Generators: Insights From Hardware Experiments

This paper presents a comprehensive performance evaluation of a microgrid system integrating grid-forming (GFM) inverters, grid-following (GFL) inverters, and a diesel generator, focusing on their interactions and behavior under various dynamic events. The study is conducted using a pure hardware setup comprising two GFM inverters, one GFL inverter, a diesel generator, load banks, a point of common coupling (PCC), and an emulated main grid. The evaluation specifically examines dynamic scenarios, including voltage jumps, phase jumps, rate of change of frequency (ROCOF), synchronization, and islanding operations, which pose critical challenges to system stability. Among all the tests conducted, the overloading and phase jump tests proved to be the most challenging. The capacity of the DC side is crucial for withstanding overloading and grid disturbance tests; otherwise, GFM inverters frequently trip due to DC undervoltage. Throughout all grid disturbance tests, the diesel generator consistently stands out as the most robust and reliable GFM unit in the system. Overall, insights from these hardware experiments shed light on the response characteristics of different generation types during grid disturbances and identify potential stability concerns in such hybrid microgrid systems.

On computations of the integrated space shuttle flowfield using overset grids

Numerical simulations using the thin-layer Navier-Stokes equations and chimera (overset) grid approach were carried out for flows around the integrated space shuttle vehicle over a range of Mach numbers. Body-conforming grids were used for all the component grids. Testcases include a three-component overset grid - the external tank (ET), the solid rocket booster (SRB) and the orbiter (ORB), and a five-component overset grid - the ET, SRB, ORB, forward and aft attach hardware, configurations. The results were compared with the wind tunnel and flight data. In addition, a Poisson solution procedure (a special case of the vorticity-velocity formulation) using primitive variables was developed to solve three-dimensional, irrotational, inviscid flows for single as well as overset grids. The solutions were validated by comparisons with other analytical or numerical solution, and/or experimental results for various geometries. The Poisson solution was also used as an initial guess for the thin-layer Navier-Stokes solution procedure to improve the efficiency of the numerical flow simulations. It was found that this approach resulted in roughly a 30 percent CPU time savings as compared with the procedure solving the thin-layer Navier-Stokes equations from a uniform free stream flowfield.
