Measurement of the ${\Lambda}_b^0$→ J/ψΛ angular distribution and the ${\Lambda}_b^0$ polarisation in pp collisions

This paper presents an analysis of the \( {\Lambda}_b^0 \) → J/ψ Λ angular distribution and the transverse production polarisation of \( {\Lambda}_b^0 \) baryons in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. The measurements are performed using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.9 fb – 1 , collected with the LHCb experiment. The polarisation is determined in a fiducial region of \( {\Lambda}_b^0 \) transverse momentum and pseudorapidity of 1 < p T < 20 GeV/ c and 2 < η < 5, respectively. The data are consistent with \( {\Lambda}_b^0 \) baryons being produced unpolarised in this region. The parity-violating asymmetry parameter of the Λ → pπ – decay is also determined from the data and its value is found to be consistent with a recent measurement by the BES III collaboration.

Searches for Heavy Neutral Leptons (HNL) in CMS

The smallness of neutrino masses in conjunction with the observed flavor oscillations in the neutrino sector can be hinting to physics beyond the standard model. These observations can be naturally accommodated by the so-called "seesaw" mechanism, in which new Heavy Neutral Leptons (HNL) are postulated. Additionally, several HNL models provide a DM candidate or include a possible explanation for the observed baryon asymmetry. This talk presents an comprehensive overview of the CMS HNL program with a focus on the new experimental results as shown in a recently published review paper by CMS.The talk will highlight several novel and complementary approaches using both prompt and long-lived signatures using the full Run-II data-set collected at the LHC.

Vector bosons and jets in proton collisions

Events with vector bosons produced in association with jets have been extensively studied at hadron colliders and provide high-accuracy tests of the standard model. A good understanding of these processes is of paramount importance for precision Higgs physics, as well as for searches for new physics. In particular, associated production of γ, W, or Z bosons with light-flavor and heavy-flavor jets is a powerful tool for testing perturbative QCD calculations, Monte Carlo event generators, and can also constrain the parametrizations used to describe the parton content of the proton. Furthermore, events with a W or Z boson produced with two well-separated jets can be used to distinguish between electroweak and strong production mechanisms, and to set limits on contributions of physics beyond the standard model. This review summarizes the historical theoretical developments and the state-of-the-art in the modeling of vector-boson-plus-jet physics while focusing on experimental results by the LHC collaborations in run 1 and run 2 and including comparisons with recent measurements at the Tevatron.

Muon-induced baryon number violation

The search for charged-lepton flavor violation in muon capture on nuclei is a powerful probe of heavy new physics. A smoking gun signal for μ → e conversion is a monochromatic electron with energy almost equal to the muon mass. We show that light new physics can mimic this signature and that it can also lead to electrons above the μ → e signal peak. A concrete example of such light new physics is μ − -nucleon annihilation into a light dark sector, which can produce an energetic e − as well as e + e − by-products. Due to the size of the muon mass, the exotic muon capture process can be kinematically allowed, while the otherwise stringent constraints, e.g., from proton decay, are kinematically forbidden. We also discuss other relevant constraints, including those from the stability of nuclei and muon capture in the interior of neutron stars. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Beyond the Standard Model physics prospects at the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment

The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is an international project for neutrino physics and proton-decay searches, currently in the design and planning stages. Once built, DUNE will consist of two detectors exposed to the world's most intense neutrino beam. The near detector at Fermilab will record neutrino interactions near the beginning of the beam line. The other, much larger, detector, comprising four 10-kton liquid argon time projection chambers (LArTPCs), will be installed at a depth of 1.5 km at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in South Dakota, about 1,300 km away from the neutrino source. The unique combination of the high-intensity neutrino beam, DUNE's high-resolution near detector system, and massive LArTPC far detector enables a variety of probes of Beyond-the-Standard-Model (BSM) physics, from the discovery of new particles (sterile neutrinos or dark matter), to precision tests of beyond the three-flavor mixing paradigm, non-standard neutrino interactions (NSIs), heavy neutral leptons, and the detailed study of rare processes (e.g., neutrino trident production). This article reviews these physics topics and discusses the prospects for their discovery at the DUNE experiment.

Heavy-quark spin symmetry breaking in the Born-Oppenheimer approximation

Heavy-quark spin symmetry is explicitly broken by the mass splitting between a heavy-light pseudoscalar meson and its vector partner. This fact plays a pivotal role in the physics of states whose mass lies close to the threshold of an open-flavor meson pair, like X (3872). We show that this source of heavy-quark spin symmetry breaking can be systematically included within the diabatic representation of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. We verify that including all the appropriate coupled channels guarantees conservation of total angular momentum, parity, and charge-conjugation parity. This marks a fundamental step towards a unified, first-principles study of quarkonia and meson molecules with hidden flavor.
