Strong Kitaev Interaction in BaCo 2⁢ (AsO 4 ) 2

The inelastic neutron scattering results and their analysis unequivocally point to a dominant Kitaev interaction in the honeycomb-lattice cobaltate BaCo 2 ⁢(AsO 4 ) 2 . Our anisotropic-exchange model closely describes all available neutron scattering data in the material’s field-polarized phase. Furthermore, the density-matrix renormalization group results for our model are in close accord with the unusual double-zigzag magnetic order and the low in-plane saturation field of BaCo 2 ⁢(AsO 4 ) 2 .

Detection of long-range entanglement in gapped quantum spin liquids by local measurements

Topological order, reflected in long-range patterns of entanglement, is quantified by the topological entanglement entropy γ. We show that for gapped quantum spin liquids it is possible to extract γ using two-spin local correlators. We demonstrate our method for the gapped Z 2 Kitaev spin liquid on a honeycomb lattice with anisotropic interactions. We show that the γ = ln⁡2 for Z 2 topological order can be simply extracted from local two-spin correlators across two different bonds that involve only Majorana fermions, with an accuracy comparable to or higher than the Kitaev-Preskill construction. This implies that even though the ground state can be factorized into the product of Majorana and gauge sectors, the different superselection sectors of Z 2 gauge theory determined by global Wilson loop operators can be reflected locally in the Majorana sector.

High field magnetization of FePS 3

High field magnetization measurements in pulsed fields up to 65 T have been performed on FePS 3 , which is nominally a good example of a two-dimensional Ising-like antiferromagnet on a honeycomb lattice. Measurements with the field parallel to the moment direction confirm the presence of two first-order transitions above 35 T, to M/M sat = 1/2 and M/M sat = 1, respectively, at 4 K. The measurements are in contradiction with published estimates for the magnetic exchange parameters, but the contradiction can be resolved by allowing for anisotropic exchange parameters in the Hamiltonian. Furthermore, the magnetization with the field perpendicular to the moment direction is anisotropic, with no transitions observed for fields along the a axis while a cascade of first-order transitions is observed for fields above 50 T along the b axis, the latter case also showing a strong degradation of the sample after repeated pulses. The results indicate a strong magnetolattice coupling in FePS 3 . Temperature-dependent measurements hint at a possible tricritical point.

Continuous phase transition between bosonic integer quantum Hall liquid and a trivial insulator: Evidence for deconfined quantum criticality

The deconfined quantum critical point, a prototype Landau-forbidden transition, could exist, in principle, in the phase transitions involving a symmetry-protected topological phase; however, examples of such kinds of transitions in physical systems are rare beyond one-dimensional systems. Here, using a density-matrix renormalization-group calculation, we unveil a bosonic integer quantum Hall phase in a two-dimensional correlated honeycomb lattice, by full identification of its internal structure from the topological K matrix. Furthermore, we demonstrate that imbalanced periodic chemical potentials can destroy the bosonic integer quantum Hall state and drive it into a featureless trivial (Mott) insulator, where all physical observables evolve smoothly across the critical point. At the critical point, the entanglement entropy reveals a characteristic scaling behavior, which is consistent with the critical field theory as an emergent QED3 with two flavors of Dirac fermions.

Magnetic anisotropy in ferromagnetic CrI 3

We use neutron scattering to show that ferromagnetic (FM) phase transition in the two-dimensional (2D) honeycomb lattice CrI 3 is a weakly first order transition and controlled by spin-orbit coupling (SOC) induced magnetic anisotropy, instead of magnetic exchange coupling as in a conventional ferromagnet. With increasing temperature, the magnitude of magnetic anisotropy, seen as a spin gap at the Brillouin zone center, decreases in a power law fashion and vanishes at T C , while the in-plane and c-axis spin-wave stiffnesses associated with magnetic exchange couplings remain robust at T C . We also compare parameter regimes where spin waves in CrI 3 can be described by a Heisenberg Hamiltonian with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction or a Heisenberg-Kitaev Hamiltonian. These results suggest that the SOC induced magnetic anisotropy plays a dominant role in stabilizing the FM order in single layer 2D van der Waals ferromagnets.

Control of spin dynamics in artificial honeycomb spin-ice-based nanodisks

In this paper, we report the experimental and theoretical characterization of the angular-dependent spin dynamics in arrays of ferromagnetic nanodisks arranged on a honeycomb lattice. The magnetic field and microwave frequency dependence, measured by broadband ferromagnetic resonance, reveal a rich spectrum of modes that is strongly affected by the microstate of the network. Based on symmetry arguments with respect to the external field, we show that certain parts of the ferromagnetic network contribute to the detected signal. A comparison of the experimental data with micromagnetic simulations reveals that different subsections of the lattice predominantly contribute to the high-frequency response of the array. This is confirmed by optical characterizations using microfocused Brillouin light scattering. Furthermore, we find indications that nucleation and annihilation of vortexlike magnetization configurations in the low-field range affect the dynamics, which is different from clusters of ferromagnetic nanoellipses. Our work opens up new perspectives for designing magnonic devices that combine geometric frustration in gyrotropic vortex crystals at low frequencies with magnonic crystals at high frequencies.

Emergence of p+ip superconductivity in two-dimensional doped Dirac systems

Searching for the $p + ip$ superconducting (SC) state has become a fascinating subject in condensed matter physics recently, as a dream application awaiting in topological quantum computation. Unfortunately, so far there is no universal principle for realizing $p + ip$ in generic solid-state systems. Here we report a theoretical discovery of a $p + ip$ SC ground state (coexisting with ferromagnetic order) in the honeycomb lattice Hubbard model in the extremely strong-coupling limit (e.g., infinite U) at low doping $(δ < 0.2)$, by using both the state-of-art Grassmann tensor product state approach and a continuum quantum field theory approach. Our discovery suggests a mechanism for the $p + ip$ SC state in generic strongly correlated systems based on spin-charge separation and the charge current–current coupling scenario, which opens a door towards experimental realization. The $p + ip$ SC state has an instability towards a potential non-Fermi liquid with a large but finite U . Nevertheless, by applying an in-plane Zeeman field, such a $p + ip$ SC state can be stabilized with finite U in a very wide range of doping. Relevant realistic materials are also proposed.

Néel-type antiferromagnetic order and magnetic field–temperature phase diagram in the spin-1/2 rare-earth honeycomb compound YbCl 3

Most of the searches for Kitaev materials deal with 4 d / 5 d magnets with spin-orbit-coupled J = 1 / 2 local moments such as iridates and α - RuCl 3 . Here we propose the monoclinic YbCl 3 with a Yb 3 + honeycomb lattice for the exploration of Kitaev physics. We perform thermodynamic, a c susceptibility, angle-dependent magnetic torque, and neutron diffraction measurements on YbCl 3 single crystal. We find that the Yb 3 + ion exhibits a Kramers doublet ground state that gives rise to an effective spin J eff = 1 / 2 local moment. Additionally, the compound exhibits short-range magnetic order below 1.20 K, followed by a long-range Néel-type antiferromagnetic order at 0.60 K, below which the ordered Yb 3 + spins lie in the a c plane with an angle of 16(11) ° away from the a axis. These orders can be suppressed by in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic fields at around 6 and 10 T, respectively. Moreover, the Néel temperature varies nonmonotonically under the out-of-plane magnetic fields, suggesting a reduced spin dimensionality. Finally, together with the strong in-plane magnetic anisotropy and the reduced order moment 0.8(1) μ B at 0.25 K, all indicate that YbCl 3 could be a two-dimensional spin system to proximate the Kitaev physics.

Langevin simulations of the half-filled cubic Holstein model

Over the past several years, reliable quantum Monte Carlo results for the charge density wave transition temperature T cdw of the half-filled two-dimensional Holstein model in square and honeycomb lattices have become available for the first time. Here, exploiting the further development of numerical methodology, here we present results in three dimensions, which are made possible through the use of Langevin evolution of the quantum phonon degrees of freedom. In addition to determining T cdw from the scaling of the charge correlations, we also examine the nature of charge order at general wave vectors for different temperatures, couplings, and phonon frequencies, and the behavior of the spectral function and specific heat.

Two-dimensional multifunctional materials from endohedral fullerenes

A multifunctional two-dimensional (2D) material is theoretically predicted based on systematic ab initio calculations and model simulations for the honeycomb lattice of endohedral fullerene W@C 28 molecules. It has structural bistability, ferroelectricity, multiple magnetic phases, and excellent valley characters and can be easily functionalized by the proximity effect with magnetic isolators such as MnTiO 3 . Furthermore, we may also manipulate the valley Hall and spin transport properties by selectively switching a few W@C 28 molecules to the metastable phase. These conclusions contribute to integrating different functions in a single 2D material for technological innovations.

Plasmons in Z 2 topological insulators

Here, we study plasmonic excitations in the Kane-Mele model, a two-dimensional Z 2 topological insulator on the honeycomb lattice, using the random phase approximation (RPA). In the topologically nontrivial phase, the model has conducting edge states that traverse the bulk energy gap and display spin-momentum locking. Such a state of matter is called the quantum spin hall (QSH) phase, which is robust against time-reversal (TR) invariant perturbations. We find that in the QSH phase, gapless spin-polarized plasmons can be excited on the edges of the system. The propagation of these plasmons is chiral for each individual spin component and shows spin-momentum locking for both spin components on the same edge. Moreover, we study the effect of external magnetic fields on the gapless edge plasmons. Specifically, out-of-plane magnetic fields delocalize edge plasmons propagating in one direction without affecting the other one, while an in-plane magnetic field can be applied to selectively excite a specific spin-plasmon branch with proper doping or gating to the system. Our findings may have potential applications in novel plasmonic and spintronic devices. We also investigate plasmons in the Kane-Mele model on a finite-sized diamond-shaped nanoflake and observe low-energy plasmons circulating the boundary of the material.

Gauge-invariant measure of the magnon orbital angular momentum

Unlike the Berry phase, the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of magnons with two-dimensional wave vector k in band n is not gauge invariant for arbitrary phase λ n (k) and so is not physically observable. However, by integrating the OAM over the orientation φ of wave vector k, we construct a gauge-invariant function F n (k). Like F n (k), the average OAM for magnon band n in a circle of radius k is also gauge invariant and can be directly observed. We demonstrate these results for a ferromagnet on a honeycomb lattice with Dzyalloshinskii-Moriya interactions between next-nearest neighbor spins. With wave vectors k restricted to the first Brillouin zone, the angular averaged OAM F n (k) then has opposite signs for lower and upper bands n=1 and 2 for all k.

Electronic structure of Co 3 d states in the Kitaev material candidate honeycomb cobaltate Na 3 Co 2 SbO 6 probed with x-ray dichroism

The recent prediction that honeycomb lattices of Co 2+ (3d 7 ) ions could host dominant Kitaev interactions provides an exciting direction for exploration of new routes to stabilizing Kitaev’s quantum spin liquid in real materials. Na 3 Co 2 SbO 6 has been singled out as a potential material candidate provided that spin and orbital moments couple into a J eff = $\frac{1}{2}$ ground state, and that the relative strength of trigonal crystal field and spin-orbit coupling acting on Co ions can be tailored. Using x-ray linear dichroism (XLD) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) experiments, alongside configuration interaction calculations, we confirm the counterintuitive positive sign of the trigonal crystal field acting on Co 2+ ions and test the validity of the J eff = $\frac{1}{2}$ description of the electronic ground state. Furthermore, the results lend experimental support to recent theoretical predictions that a compression (elongation) of CoO 6 octahedra along (perpendicular to) the trigonal axis would drive this cobaltate toward the Kitaev limit, assuming the J eff = $\frac{1}{2}$ character of the electronic ground state is preserved.

Dynamics of fractionalized mean-field theories: Consequences for Kitaev materials

There have been substantial recent efforts, both experimentally and theoretically, to find a material realization of the Kitaev spin liquid—the ground state of the exactly solvable Kitaev model on the honeycomb lattice. Candidate materials are now plentiful, but the presence of non-Kitaev terms makes comparison between theory and experiment challenging. Here, we rederive time-dependent Majorana mean-field theory and extend it to include quantum phase information, allowing the direct computation of the experimentally relevant dynamical spin-spin correlator, which reproduces exact results for the unperturbed model. In contrast to previous work, we find that small perturbations do not substantially alter the exact result, implying that α-RuCl 3 is perhaps farther from the Kitaev phase than originally thought. Our approach generalizes to any correlator and to any model where Majorana mean-field theory is a valid starting point.

Moiré Kanamori-Hubbard model for transition metal dichalcogenide homobilayers

Ab initio and continuum model studies predicted that the Γ valley transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) homobilayers could simulate the conventional multiorbital Hubbard model on the moiré honeycomb lattice. Here, in this work, we perform the Wannierization starting from the continuum model and show that a more general moiré Kanamori-Hubbard model emerges, beyond the extensively studied standard multiorbital Hubbard model, which can be used to investigate the many-body physics in the Γ valley TMD homobilayers. Using the unrestricted Hartree-Fock and Lanczos techniques, we study these half-filled multiorbital moiré bands. By constructing the phase diagrams we predict the presence of an antiferromagnetic state and in addition we found unexpected and dominant states, such as a S = 1 ferromagnetic insulator and a charge density wave state. Our theoretical predictions made using this model can be tested in future experiments on the Γ valley TMD homobilayers.

Electronic and magnetic phase diagrams of the Kitaev quantum spin liquid candidate Na 2 Co 2 TeO 6

The 3⁢d 7 Co 2+ -based insulating magnet Na 2 ⁢Co 2 ⁢TeO 6 has recently been reported to have strong Kitaev interactions on a honeycomb lattice and is thus being considered as a Kitaev quandum spin liquid candidate. However, due to the existence of other types of interactions, a spontaneous long-range magnetic order occurs. This order is suppressed by applied magnetic fields leading to a succession of phases and ultimately saturation of the magnetic moments. The precise phase diagram, the nature of the phases, and the possibility that one of the field-induced phases is a Kitaev quantum spin liquid phase are still a matter of debate. Here, in this study, we measured an extensive set of physical properties to build the complete temperature-field phase diagrams to magnetic saturation at 10 T for magnetic fields along the a and a* axes, and a partial phase diagram up to 60 T along c. We probe the phases using magnetization, specific heat, magnetocaloric effect, magnetostriction, dielectric constant, and electric polarization, which is a symmetry-sensitive probe. With these measurements, we identify all the previously incomplete phase boundaries and find additional high-field phase boundaries. We find strong magnetoelectric coupling in the dielectric constant and moderate magnetostrictive coupling at several phase boundaries. Furthermore, we detect the symmetry of the magnetic order using electrical polarization measurements under magnetic fields. Based on our analysis, the absence of electric polarization under zero or finite magnetic field in any of the phases or after any combination of magnetic/electric field cooling suggests that a zigzag spin structure is more likely than a triple-Q spin structure at zero field. Finally, we investigate the hysteresis and first- or second-order nature of each phase transition and its entropy changes. With this information, we establish a map of the magnetic phases of this compound and its magnetic, thermodynamic, and magnetoelectric properties, and discuss where spin liquid or other phases may be sought in future studies.

Fractionalized excitations probed by ultrasound

In this work, we study magnetoelastic interactions by means of ultrasound experiments in 𝛼−RuCl 3 —a prototypical material for the Kitaev spin model on the honeycomb lattice, with a possible spin-liquid state featuring Majorana fermions and ℤ 2 -flux excitations. We present results of the temperature and in-plane magnetic-field dependence of the sound velocity and sound attenuation for several longitudinal and transverse phonon modes propagating along high-symmetry crystallographic directions. A comprehensive data analysis above the magnetically ordered state provides strong evidence of phonon scattering by Majorana fermions. This scattering depends sensitively on the value of the phonon velocities relative to the characteristic velocity of the low-energy fermionic excitations describing the spin dynamics of the underlying Kitaev magnet. Moreover, our data displays a distinct reduction of anisotropy of the sound attenuation, consistent with the presence of thermally excited ℤ 2 visons. Here, we demonstrate the potential of phonon dynamics as a promising probe for uncovering fractionalized excitations in 𝛼−RuCl 3 and provide new insights into the 𝐻−𝑇 phase diagram of this material.

Field-dependent magnons in the honeycomb antiferromagnet CoTiO 3

We report field-dependent high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements on the honeycomb lattice magnet, CoTiO 3 , to study the evolution of its magnon excitations across a spin reorientation transition driven by an in-plane magnetic field. By carrying out elastic neutron scattering in a magnetic field, we show that the sample transitions from a collinear antiferromagnetic state with multiple magnetic domains at a low field to a monodomain state with a canted magnetic structure at a high field. Concurrent with this transition, we observed significant changes in both the energy and the width of the zone center magnon peak. The observed width change was argued to be consistent with an unusual zero-field state with extended domain walls. On the other hand, the magnon spectra near the K point of the Brillouin zone boundary were found to be largely insensitive to the changes in the ordered moment directions and the domain configuration. We argue that this observation is difficult to explain within the framework of the bond-dependent model proposed in a recent INS study [M. Elliot et al., Nat. Commun. 12, 3936 (2021)]. Our paper therefore calls for alternative explanations for the observed K-point gap in CoTiO 3 .
