Computational materials reliability assessment of hydrogen fueled gas turbine power generation engines
The use of blended fuel sources in land based gas turbine engines drives variations in the resulting operational profile (temperatures and pressures) which can impact engine reliability. Furthermore, variability in the manufacture of components affects the resulting microstructure which directly impacts material performance and reliability. Currently, data-driven models are typically used for maintaining and inspecting fleets of engines. Without explicitly capturing material and operational sources of variability conservatism must be used in developing component-level reliability models. Therefore, there exists an opportunity to use information from materials-scale physics models to better inform reliability modeling and reduce conservatism; the impact is more cost-efficient operation and maintenance of current and future fleets. Specifically, this work establishes a computational framework for evaluating the probabilistic high temperature creep performance of hot-section Ni-based superalloys where uncertainty comes from both microstructural and operational variability. A novel high-fidelity physics model which phenomenologically captures grain-boundary sensitive phenomena has been established. A probabilistic calibration procedure was used to calibrate the model and capture uncertainty in the parameterized model coefficients. A design of experiments methodology was established for identifying informative microstructural digital representations for suitable for forward model evaluation. Results show that training a machine-learning surrogate using this design criteria outperforms random selection of microstructural representations. Finally, two surrogate models were developed: (1) a deterministic surrogate model which predicts the local field response given microstructure, constitutive model parameters, and operating conditions (stress, temperature) and (2) a probabilistic model, where uncertainty comes from constitutive law uncertainty, built using denoising diffusion probabilistic models which samples responses given (1) microstructure and (2) operating conditions. These surrogate models enable partner Siemens Energy to rapidly perform UQ analysis specific to creep deformation across a range of microstructures and operating conditions. The impact is that these ML and physics codes can be used to establish more advanced reliability models for the inspection, servicing, and maintenance of land based gas turbine engines.

Study of thermal insulation for airborne liquid hydrogen fuel tanks
A concept for a fail-safe thermal protection system was developed. From screening tests, approximately 30 foams, adhesives, and reinforcing fibers using 0.3-meter square liquid nitrogen cold plate, CPR 452 and Stafoam AA1602, both reinforced with 10 percent by weight of 1/16 inch milled OCF Style 701 Fiberglas, were selected for further tests. Cyclic tests with these materials in 2-inch thicknesses bonded on a 0.6-meter square cold plate with Crest 7410 adhesive systems, were successful. Zero permeability gas barriers were identified and found to be compatible with the insulating concept.
Direct-connect test of a hydrogen-fueled three-strut injector for an integrated modular scramjet engine
The study aims at illustrating the effects of strut and injector interactions and strut wakes not totally simulated in previous, less complex, direct-connect hardware. In addition, the influence of the relative location of the injectors on opposite sides of each strut and the effect of injector spacing are evaluated. It is shown that better mixing efficiency is attained by locating the fuel injectors on opposite sides of a strut so that the jets come together, rather than being staggered, in the strut wake. It is not possible to determine the combustion efficiency by means of a one-dimensional analysis of the wall pressure.

Coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy temperature measurements in a hydrogen-fueled supersonic combustor
Coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS) thermometry has been used to obtain static temperature cross sections in a three-dimensional supersonic combustor flowfield. Data were obtained in three spanwise planes downstream of a single normal fuel injector which was located downstream of a rearward-facing step. The freestream flow was nominally Mach 2 and was combustion heated to a total temperature of 1440 K (yielding a static temperature of about 800 K in the freestream) to simulate the inflow to a combustor operating at a flight Mach number of about 5.4. Since a broadband probe laser was used an instantaneous temperature sample was obtained with each laser shot at a repetition rate of 10 Hz. Thus root-mean-square (rms) temperatures and temperature probability density functions (pdf's) were obtained in addition to mean temperatures.

Comparative Flow Path Analysis and Design Assessment of an Axisymmetric Hydrogen Fueled Scramjet Flight Test Engine at a Mach Number of 6.5
NASA has contracted with the Central Institute of Aviation Motors CIAM to perform a flight test and ground test and provide a scramjet engine for ground test in the United States. The objective of this contract is to obtain ground to flight correlation for a supersonic combustion ramjet (scramjet) engine operating point at a Mach number of 6.5. This paper presents results from a flow path performance and thermal evaluation performed on the design proposed by the CIAM. This study shows that the engine will perform in the scramjet mode for stoichiometric operation at a flight Mach number of 6.5. Thermal assessment of the structure indicates that the combustor cooling liner will provide adequate cooling for a Mach number of 6.5 test condition and that optional material proposed by CIAM for the cowl leading-edge design are required to allow operation with or without a type IV shock-shock interaction.
