Individual pulse polarization properties of three pulsars

Both average and individual pulse polarization measurements at 430 MHz are presented for three pulsars: PSR 0823 + 26, PSR 0834 + 06, and PSR 2303 + 30. In each case, the average Stokes parameter waveformes are found to depend on the individual pulse polarization properties in a complicated manner. The average waveforms are in general depolarized by pulse-to-pulse fluctuations in polarization state at a given longitude. Two of the three objects exhibit variations of both linear and circular polarization which are associated with quasi-periodic subpulse modulation phenomena in a manner similar to that reported for linear polarization in PSR 0809 + 74 by Taylor et al. (1971.).

Individual radiosensitivity and its daily variations

The effectiveness of determining individual radiosensitivity of rats by total gas exchange measurements, studies of Na/K content in urine, and the reaction of leukocytes to intra-abdominal administration of epinephrine, was studied. The most indicative results of predicting individual reaction to radiation were obtained by the leukocyte reaction to epinephrine load; however, changes in the leukocyte content of peripheral blood after epinephrine administration depended on the initial level during the day.

Individual differences in pilot performance

Selected literature on individual differences in pilot performance is reviewed in order to indicate a possible direction for research. Approaches to studying pilot decision-making processes are discussed, with emphasis given to the wrong-model approach in which accident and incident data, or 'process tracing' provide experimental computational structures. Analysis of data from a simulator experiment on V/STOL zero-visibility landing performance suggests that the order of ranking of individual pilot's effectiveness varies with particular situations defined by combinations of tracking requirements (e.g., glide slope, localizer) and glide-slope segment, or speed requirements; the data are being further analyzed.

Documentation for the machine-readable version of the catalogue of individual UBV and UVBY beta observations in the region of the Orion OB1 association

The machine-readable files of individual UBV observations of 106 stars in the vicinity of the Orion Nebula (the Sword region) and individual uvby beta observations of 508 stars in all regions of the Orion OB 1 association are described. For the UBV data the stars are identified by their Brun numbers, with cross identifications to the chart numbers used in Warren and Hesser; the uv by beta stars are identified by the aforementioned chart numbers and HD, BD or P ( = pi); numbers in that order of preference.

Fragmentation of Fe nuclei on carbon, hydrogen and CH2 targets. I - Individual charge changing and total cross sections. II - Isotopic cross sections

The fragmentation of Fe nuclei in carbon and CH2 targets at energies of 650, 800, and 950 MeV/nuc has been studied. Direct measurements of the interaction between Fe nuclei and the carbon and CH2 targets were carried out. The Fe to H charge changing cross sections derived for selected nuclei showed a clear energy dependence, consistent with the results of Westfall et al. (1979). Values for the total inelastic cross section Fe to H charge changing were obtained by two methods: the first method involved subtracting the total CH2 and C cross sections (values of 703 plus or minus 9 mb and 65 plus or minus 10 mb at 950 MeV/nuc and 650 MeV/nuc, respectively were obtained). The same cross sections were obtained by adding the individual charge changing cross sections. A cross section for Fe to fragment into lower mass Fe isotopes of 65 plus or minus 5 mb was also observed, giving total inelastic mass changing cross sections of 768 plus or minus 11 mb and 716 plus or minus 12 mb, respectively. In addition, the individual isotopic cross sections for Z equals 16-25 are reported.

Average Spacing for Rings of Individual Multi-ring Basins Is 2.0(0.5)D

The mathematically regular spacing of the concentric rings of planetary impact basins are examined. It is shown that a constant radial increment of x (sub 0.5) D, where x is about 2.0 and D is ring diameter, separates adjacent statistical groups of rings and arcs of multiring basins on Mars, Mercury, and the Moon. Statistics of spacing for adjacent rings of individual basins on the three planets are presented, and single basins from ring measurements of newly-recognized basins on Mercury and Mars are revised. Analysis of ring rank: ring diameter for adjacent rings of individual basins also yields an average spacing of about 2.0 (sup 0.5) D, specifically (2.01 + or - 0.26) (sup 0.5) D.

Stimulus specificity and individual stereotypy of autonomic responses to motion stressors

Motion sickness research shows a lack of agreement regarding the contribution of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The resolution of this question is exigent for Space Adaptation Syndrome, zero gravity sickness. A case is drawn for the necessity to apply a methodological approach that incorporates: (1) standardization of parameters in relation to the individual differences in variability and prestimulus levels; (2) a concern for patterning of responses; and (3) the physiological association with subjective reports. Vasomotor, heart rate, respiration rate, skin conductance and subjective reports of malaise were collected from 22 subjects while participating in three motion stressors; vertical acceleration, Coriolis stimulation, and combined optokinetic and Coriolis stimulation. The results demonstrate that ANS response patterns can be separated into three mutually exclusive components: (1) a generalized response to motion sickness; (2) a stimulus specific response to the type of stressor being presented; and (3) individualized stereotypical response patterns that are associated with subjective reports of malaise.

The effect of compression on individual pressure vessel nickel/hydrogen components

Compression tests were performed on representative Individual Pressure Vessel (IPV) Nickel/Hydrogen cell components in an effort to better understand the effects of force on component compression and the interactions of components under compression. It appears that the separator is the most easily compressed of all of the stack components. It will typically partially compress before any of the other components begin to compress. The compression characteristics of the cell components in assembly differed considerably from what would be predicted based on individual compression characteristics. Component interactions played a significant role in the stack response to compression. The results of the compression tests were factored into the design and selection of Belleville washers added to the cell stack to accommodate nickel electrode expansion while keeping the pressure on the stack within a reasonable range of the original preset.

Localization of motoneurons innervating individual abdominal muscles of the cat

The paper presents the results of a systematic investigation of the innervation of the cat's individual abdominal muscles. The segmental distribution of the different motor pools was determined by using electrical microstimulation of the ventral horn to produce visible localized muscle twitches and by retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase injected into individual muscles. The segmental distribution of each motor pool was as follows: rectus abdominis, T4-L3; external oblique, T6-L3; transverse abdominis, T9-L3; and internal oblique, T13-L3.

Prospects for gamma-ray line observations of individual supernovae

The gamma-ray line emission from individual type I and type II supernovae are studied using numerical simulations and photon propagation codes to predict the flux levels and line shapes. For both types, the gamma ray lines with the highest flux from an individual event are the 0.847 and 1.238 MeV lines from the Ni-56 to Co-56 to Fe-56 decay chain. For type I supernovae, the 0.847 MeV line peaks at about 70 days after event onset. The historical record indicates an approximate discovery rate of once in 10 years for balloon-borne instruments, once in two to three years for the Gamma-Ray Observatory, and once in one to two years for a proposed space mission. The 0.847 MeV line flux from type II supernovae peaks at about 600 days after event onset at a low level which restricts observations to the events in the Galaxy and its nearest neighbors. The expected line shape is narrower than for type I supernovae.

Individual differences and subjective workload assessment - Comparing pilots to nonpilots

Results by two groups of subjects, pilots and nonpilots, for two subjective workload assessment techniques (the SWAT and NASA-TLX tests) intended to evaluate individual differences in the perception and reporting of subjective workload are compared with results obtained for several traditional personality tests. The personality tests were found to discriminate between the groups while the workload tests did not. It is concluded that although the workload tests may provide useful information with respect to the interaction between tasks and personality, they are not effective as pure tests of individual differences.

Trends and individual differences in response to short-haul flight operations

A survey of airline pilots was undertaken to determine normative patterns and individual differences in mood and sleep during short-haul flight operations. The results revealed that over the course of a typical 2-d trip, pilots experience a decline in positive mood, or activity, and an increase in negative mood, or tension. On layovers, pilots report experiencing sleep of shorter duration and poorer quality than at home. These patterns are very similar to those reported by Gander and Graeber (1987) and by Gander et al. (1988), using high-fidelity sleep and activity monitoring equipment. Examination of the impact of two personality dimensions extracted from the Jenkins Activity Survey measure of the Type A personality, Achievement Striving and Impatience/Irritability, suggested that Impatience/Irritability may serve as a marker of individuals most likely to experience health-related problems on trips. Achievement Striving may serve as a predictor of performance in crew settings.

Oxygen isotopic composition of individual olivine grains from the Allende meteorite

The oxygen isotopic composition of a variety of individual olivine grains (including refractory forsterite grains, cores of isolated olivine grains, FeO-rich rims, and individual matrix olivine grains) from the Allende CV3 meteorite was investigated by ion microprobe mass spectrometry, in order to obtain information on the formation mechanism of these samples. It was found that the most primitive (i.e., refractory) olivine in Allende is far less enriched in O-16 than are spinel and pyroxene in Ca,Al-rich inclusions, suggesting that Allende olivine must have formed in an environment that is less enriched in O-16 compared to the gas from which Ca,Al-inclusions are formed. FeO-rich (26-30 wt pct) rims of isolated olivine grains are significantly higher in delta-O-17 and delta-O-18 than forsteritic cores, suggesting that these rims formed by condensation from an oxidized gas with higher delta-O-17 than delta-O-18. Matrix olivine was found to be highest in FeO and to have the lowest enrichment in O-16.

Experimental Investigation of a Five-stage Axial-flow Research Compressor with Transonic Rotors in All Stages III : Interstage Data and Individual Stage Performance Characteristics

For use in computing the detailed performance parameters of individual blade rows of a multistage compressor, radial distributions of total pressure, total temperature, static pressure and air-flow angle are tabulated. The data cover a range of air flow from choke to the approximate surge limit for equivalent rotor speeds from 70 to 100 percent of design. Equivalent stage performance curves determined from the radial survey measurements indicate both the individual performance and the matching of the stages at the speeds investigated.

Small passive student experiments on G324 261 individual quests for student knowledge

The Charleston County School District CAN DO Project payload on STS-57 had a primary goal of photographing the Earth with the GeoCam camera system. In addition, the payload carried 261 passive student experiments representing the efforts of several thousand students throughout the district and in four other states. These experiments represented the individual concepts of teams ranging in age from pre-school to high school. Consequently, a tremendous variety of samples from collard green seeds to microscopic 'water bears' were flown. Each prospective team was provided a simple kit equipped with five vials. Each student team submitted five coded samples, one for space flight and four control samples. The control samples were exposed to radiation, cold and centrifugation respectively while one negative control sample was passively stored. The students received the samples back still coded so that they were unaware of which samples were flown. They then investigated their samples according to their individual research protocols. The results were presented in poster and platform form at a student research symposium. Space Trees grown from tree seeds flown in the payload have been planted at all district schools, and at many guest schools. These seeds represented another way in which to involve additional classes and students. Both the passive experiments and the space trees were housed in what otherwise would have been wasted space within the payload. They extended the GAS programs worthwhile ballast concept to another level. The opportunity to fly an experiment in space is too previous not to be extended to the greatest number of students possible.

Estimation of Slow Crack Growth Parameters for Constant Stress-Rate Test Data of Advanced Ceramics and Glass by the Individual Data and Arithmetic Mean Methods

The two estimation methods, individual data and arithmetic mean methods, were used to determine the slow crack growth (SCG) parameters (n and D) of advanced ceramics and glass from a large number of room- and elevated-temperature constant stress-rate ('dynamic fatigue') test data. For ceramic materials with Weibull modulus greater than 10, the difference in the SCG parameters between the two estimation methods was negligible; whereas, for glass specimens exhibiting Weibull modulus of about 3, the difference was amplified, resulting in a maximum difference of 16 and 13 %, respectively, in n and D. Of the two SCG parameters, the parameter n was more sensitive to the estimation method than the other. The coefficient of variation in n was found to be somewhat greater in the individual data method than in the arithmetic mean method.
