Nanofilm Composite Membranes of Bottlebrush Poly(1,3‐Dioxolane) Plasticized by Poly(Ethylene Glycol) for CO 2 /N 2 Separation

Abstract Poly(1,3‐dioxolane) has emerged as a leading membrane material for post‐combustion CO 2 capture due to its high ether oxygen content and strong affinity toward CO 2 . However, they are often cross‐linked to inhibit crystallization, which makes them impossible to fabricate into industrial thin‐film composite membranes. Herein, soluble and high molecular weight bottlebrush polymers ( b PDXLA) are synthesized using reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer polymerization and demonstrate the feasibility of fabricating nanofilm (≈100 nm) composite membranes (NCMs). Furthermore, b PDXLA can be plasticized using a miscible additive of poly(ethylene glycol) dimethyl ether (PEGDME) to improve CO 2 permeability while retaining good CO 2 /N 2 selectivity. For example, adding 20 mass% PEGDME improves CO 2 permeance from 930 to 1300 GPU and decreases CO 2 /N 2 selectivity from 74 to 53 at 25 °C; the membrane exhibits stable separation performance competitive with state‐of‐the‐art commercial membranes. This work unveils a practical approach to designing uncross‐linked, highly polar polymers for practical membrane gas separation and highlights a facile way to enhance performance by incorporating miscible plasticizers using industrial manufacturing processes.

A novel implementation of method of optimality criterion in synthesizing spacecraft structures with natural frequency constraints

In the design of spacecraft structures, fine tuning the structure to achieve minimum weight with natural frequency constraints is a time consuming process. Here, a novel implementation of the method of optimality criterion (OC) is developed. In this new implementation of OC, the free vibration analysis results are used to compute the eigenvalue sensitivity data required for the formulation. Specifically, the modal elemental strain and kinetic energies are used. Additionally, normalized design parameters are introduced as a second level linking that allows design variables of different values to be linked together. With the use of this novel formulation, synthesis of structures with natural frequency constraint can be carried out manually using modal analysis results. Design examples are presented to illustrate this novel implementation of the optimality criterion method.

ETOP 503689: Pre-optimized cell free lysates for rapid prototyping of genes and pathways

This ETOP project aimed to re-conceive how we engineer complex biological systems by linking pathway design, prospecting, and validation into an integrated framework. Specifically, our vision seeks to advance and interweave high-throughput cell-based systems and rapid cell-free technologies in a way suitable for automation and microdroplet manipulation in a DOE JGI user facility setting. The key technology to be investigated toward this vision is a cell-free platform for combinatorial assembly of pathways by mixing-and-matching crude cell lysates derived from a suite of flux-enhanced background strains, each enriched with pathway enzymes. Through this work, we have established rewired E. coli and S. cerevisiae cells suitable to generated rewired lysates. We have demonstrated that lysates derived from rewired cells can generate higher fluxes of products and can enable a more robust discovery method going from gene to function annotations. Finally, we demonstrate that these rewired lysates can be stored for up to a year and still retain function. Collectively, these technologies enable a more rapid screening approach for enzyme and pathway variants.

Miniature biotelemeter gives multichannel wideband biomedical data

A miniature biotelemeter was developed for sensing and transmitting multiple channels of biomedical data over a radio link. The design of this miniature, 10-channel, wideband (5 kHz/channel), pulse amplitude modulation/ frequency modulation biotelemeter takes advantage of modern device technology (e.g., integrated circuit operational amplifiers, complementary symmetry/metal oxide semiconductor logic, and solid state switches) and hybrid packaging techniques. The telemeter is being used to monitor 10 channels of neuron firings from specific regions of the brain in rats implanted with chronic electrodes. Design, fabrication, and testing of an engineering model biotelemeter are described.

An advanced structural analysis/synthesis capability - ACCESS 2

An advanced automated design procedure for minimum-weight design of structures (ACCESS 2) is reported. Design variable linking, constraint deletion, and explicit constraint approximation are used to combine effectively finite-element and nonlinear mathematical programming techniques. The approximation-concepts approach to structural synthesis is extended to problems involving fiber composite structure, thermal effects, and natural frequency constraints in addition to the usual static stress and displacement limitations. Sample results illustrating these features are given.

The controlled growth method - A tool for structural optimization

An adaptive design variable linking scheme in a NLP based optimization algorithm is proposed and evaluated for feasibility of application. The present scheme, based on an intuitive effectiveness measure for each variable, differs from existing methodology in that a single dominant variable controls the growth of all others in a prescribed optimization cycle. The proposed method is implemented for truss assemblies and a wing box structure for stress, displacement and frequency constraints. Substantial reduction in computational time, even more so for structures under multiple load conditions, coupled with a minimal accompanying loss in accuracy, vindicates the algorithm.

Alternative approximation concepts for space frame synthesis

A structural synthesis methodology for the minimum mass design of 3-dimensionall frame-truss structures under multiple static loading conditions and subject to limits on displacements, rotations, stresses, local buckling, and element cross-sectional dimensions is presented. A variety of approximation concept options are employed to yield near optimum designs after no more than 10 structural analyses. Available options include: (A) formulation of the nonlinear mathematcal programming problem in either reciprocal section property (RSP) or cross-sectional dimension (CSD) space; (B) two alternative approximate problem structures in each design space; and (C) three distinct assumptions about element end-force variations. Fixed element, design element linking, and temporary constraint deletion features are also included. The solution of each approximate problem, in either its primal or dual form, is obtained using CONMIN, a feasible directions program. The frame-truss synthesis methodology is implemented in the COMPASS computer program and is used to solve a variety of problems. These problems were chosen so that, in addition to exercising the various approximation concepts options, the results could be compared with previously published work.

Optimization for efficient structure-control systems

The efficiency of a structure-control system is a nondimensional parameter which indicates the fraction of the total control power expended usefully in controlling a finite-dimensional system. The balance of control power is wasted on the truncated dynamics serving no useful purpose towards the control objectives. Recently, it has been demonstrated that the concept of efficiency can be used to address a number of control issues encountered in the control of dynamic systems such as the spillover effects, selection of a good input configuration and obtaining reduced order control models. Reference (1) introduced the concept and presented analyses of several Linear Quadratic Regulator designs on the basis of their efficiencies. Encouraged by the results of Ref. (1), Ref. (2) introduces an efficiency modal analysis of a structure-control system which gives an internal characterization of the controller design and establishes the link between the control design and the initial disturbances to affect efficient structure-control system designs. The efficiency modal analysis leads to identification of principal controller directions (or controller modes) distinct from the structural natural modes. Thus ultimately, many issues of the structure-control system revolve around the idea of insuring compatibility of the structural modes and the controller modes with each other, the better the match the higher the efficiency. A key feature in controlling a reduced order model of a high dimensional (or infinity-dimensional distributed parameter system) structural dynamic system must be to achieve high efficiency of the control system while satisfying the control objectives and/or constraints. Formally, this can be achieved by designing the control system and structural parameters simultaneously within an optimization framework. The subject of this paper is to present such a design procedure.

Beginning the 21st century with advanced Automatic Parts Identification (API)

Under the direction of the NASA George C. Marshall Space Flight Center, Huntsville, Alabama, the development and commercialization of an advanced Automated Parts Indentification (API) system is being undertaken by Rockwell International Corporation. The new API system is based on a variable sized, machine-readable, two-dimensioanl matrix symbol that can be applied directly onto most metallic and nonmetallic materials using safe, permanent marking methods. Its checkerboard-like structure is the most space efficient of all symbologies. This high data-density symbology can be applied to products of different material sizes and geometries using application-dependent, computer-driven marking devices. The high fidelity markings produced by these devices can then be captured using a specially designed camera linked to any IBM-compatible computer. Applications of compressed symbology technology will reduce costs and improve quality, productivity, and processes in a wide variety of federal and commercial applications.

A Cost Comparison of Alternative Approaches to Distance Education in Developing Countries

This paper presents a cost comparison of three approaches to two-way interactive distance learning systems for developing countries. Included are costs for distance learning hardware, terrestrial and satellite communication links, and designing instruction for two-way interactive courses. As part of this project, FSEC is developing a 30-hour course in photovoltaic system design that will be used in a variety of experiments using the Advanced Communications Technology Satellite (ACTS). A primary goal of the project is to develop an instructional design and delivery model that can be used for other education and training programs. Over two-thirds of the world photovoltaics market is in developing countries. One of the objectives of this NASA-sponsored project was to develop new and better energy education programs that take advantage of advances in telecommunications and computer technology. The combination of desktop video systems and the sharing of computer applications software is of special interest. Research is being performed to evaluate the effectiveness of some of these technologies as part of this project. The design of the distance learning origination and receive sites discussed in this paper were influenced by the educational community's growing interest in distance education. The following approach was used to develop comparative costs for delivering interactive distance education to developing countries: (1) Representative target locations for receive sites were chosen. The originating site was assumed to be Cocoa, Florida, where FSEC is located; (2) A range of course development costs were determined; (3) The cost of equipment for three alternative two-way interactive distance learning system configurations was determined or estimated. The types of system configurations ranged from a PC-based system that allows instructors to originate instruction from their office using desktop video and shared application software, to a high cost system that uses a electronic classroom; (4) A range of costs for both satellite and terrestrial communications was investigated; (5) The costs of equipment and operation of the alternative configurations for the origination and receive sites were determined; (6) A range of costs for several alternative delivery scenarios (i.e., a mix of live-interactive; asynchronous interactive;use of videotapes) was determined; and (7) A preferred delivery scenario, including cost estimate, was developed.

Control of systems with tiered actuators with application to interferometer optical delay line control

High accuracy feedback control systems might employ tiers of actuators with different properties. Such systems performance can be estimated in advance using Bode integrals. The systems can be made globally stable with good transient responses and close to the best possible disturbance rejection when controllers include high-order linear links and multiple nonlinear dynamic links. The design approach is exemplified by designing conb-ol system for an interferometer optical delay line.
