LCS Master Console Event Message Reduction

System monitoring and control (SMC) message browsers receive so many messages daily that operators are unable to keep track all of them. Important messages are often mixed up among the less important ones. My job is to reduce the messages so that warning and emergency messages can be seen easily and therefore, responded promptly. There are multiple methods to achieve this. Firstly, messages that look the same should not appear many times in the message browser. Instead, the message should appear only once but with a number that counts the times that it appears. This method is called duplicate message suppression. Messages that display "normal" or "advisory" alarm level should be suppressed. Secondly, messages that update the most recent status of a system should replace the old-status messages. This method is called state based message correlation. Thirdly, some unnecessary messages should be sent straight to history after being displayed or not displayed at all. For an example, normal messages that are not a response to an operator's action should not be displayed. I also work on fixing messages that are not color-coded and formatted properly.

Activate/Inhibit KGCS Gateway via Master Console EIC Pad-B Display

My internship consisted of two major projects for the Launch Control System. The purpose of the first project was to implement the Application Control Language (ACL) to Activate Data Acquisition (ADA) and to Inhibit Data Acquisition (IDA) the Kennedy Ground Control Sub-Systems (KGCS) Gateway, to update existing Pad-B End Item Control (EIC) Display to program the ADA and IDA buttons with new ACL, and to test and release the ACL Display. The second project consisted of unit testing all of the Application Services Framework (ASF) by March 21st. The XmlFileReader was unit tested and reached 100 coverage. The XmlFileReader class is used to grab information from XML files and use them to initialize elements in the other framework elements by using the Xerces C++ XML Parser; which is open source commercial off the shelf software. The ScriptThread was also tested. ScriptThread manages the creation and activation of script threads. A large amount of the time was used in initializing the environment and learning how to set up unit tests and getting familiar with the specific segments of the project that were assigned to us.

Commercial Sensor Survey Fiscal Year 2009 master compendium radiation test report

The NASA Electronic Parts and Packaging (NEPP) Program Sensor Technology Commercial Sensor Survey task is geared toward benefiting future NASA space missions with low-cost, short-duty-cycle, visible-wavelength imaging needs. Such applications could include imaging for educational outreach purposes or short surveys of spacecraft, planetary, or lunar surfaces. Under the task, inexpensive, low-power, commercial grade CMOS sensors were surveyed in fiscal year 2007 (FY07), and three sensors were selected and tested for total ionizing dose (TID) and displacement damage dose (DDD) tolerance in fiscal year 2008 (FY08). The selected sensors had to meet selection criteria chosen to support small, low-mass cameras that produce good resolution color images. The commercial CMOS sensors tested under the task in FY08 showed very promising response to typical outreach and survey camera TID and DDD levels. In fiscal year 2009 (FY09), the survey was broadened to include two additional, similar sensor products. This compendium provides results for all radiation testing performed on the Micron and OmniVision sensors that were selected for radiation tolerance testing in FY08 and FY09.

Mastering the Cryogenic Frontier: Predicting Sloshing in Cryogenic Propellant Tanks

In recent years, NASA has undertaken the development and validation of computation fluid dynamic (CFD) models for predicting cryogenic two-phase sloshing within propellant tanks. These models have been rigorously anchored against cryogenic ground tests that induce sloshing, as well as limited microgravity tests. The primary focus of these models is to accurately predict the two-phase condensation and, at times, evaporation within the cryogenic propellant. This approach is important for estimating the required autogenous and/or helium pressurant for completing propulsion system burns or ensuring adequate pressure for in-space propellant transfers. Unlike in hypergolic propulsion systems, where the propellant is stored at room temperature, cryogenic propellant is highly volatile. Therefore, ensuring the accurate estimation of pressurant necessitates the precise modeling of two-phase interfacial heat and mass transfer processes. This paper aims to provide an overview of NASA’s continuing efforts in developing and validating these CFD models, with particular emphasis on benchmark cases with sloshing that enhances phase change, tracing their historical development, and demonstrating their predictive accuracy when compared to test results.

Trade Space Analyses: Balancing Crew and Mission Design Parameters-Candidate Mars Master Task List

In 2020, the Associate Administrator for Human Exploration and Operations and the Agency’s Federated Board requested an assessment to develop a methodology for trade space analysis comparing crew size for Mars missions against mission design parameters. The NASA Engineering and Safety Center (NESC) conducted an assessment to develop a methodology for systematic, repeatable trade space analysis for crew size and developed an initial set of human performance models and a list of candidate crew tasks for NASA’s first mission to Mars. This report contains list of candidate crew tasks for Mars.

Ultra stable frequency distribution system

A system is presented for synchronizing a signal at a remotely located slave station with the phase and frequency of a signal generated at a master station. The signal transmitted at the master station and received by the slave station provides compensation for the phase shift caused by the transmission path delays between the master and slave station. The slave station transmits a signal to the master station at a frequency that is different from the frequency of the signal being transmitted by the master station. The signal transmitted by the slave station is received by the master station while the master station transmitter is off. The signal transmitted by the master station is received by the slave station while the slave station transmitter is off.

Synchronized computational architecture for generalized bilateral control of robot arms

A master six degree of freedom Force Reflecting Hand Controller (FRHC) is available at a master site where a received image displays, in essentially real time, a remote robotic manipulator which is being controlled in the corresponding six degree freedom by command signals which are transmitted to the remote site in accordance with the movement of the FRHC at the master site. Software is user-initiated at the master site in order to establish the basic system conditions, and then a physical movement of the FRHC in Cartesean space is reflected at the master site by six absolute numbers that are sensed, translated and computed as a difference signal relative to the earlier position. The change in position is then transmitted in that differential signal form over a high speed synchronized bilateral communication channel which simultaneously returns robot-sensed response information to the master site as forces applied to the FRHC so that the FRHC reflects the feel of what is taking place at the remote site. A system wide clock rate is selected at a sufficiently high rate that the operator at the master site experiences the Force Reflecting operation in real time.
