Simultaneous partial reflection and meteor radar wind observations at Urbana, Illinois, during the winter of 1974-1975

A program of observation was undertaken during the winter of 1974-1975 utilizing the meteor winds radar and partial reflection system at Urbana, Illinois. The north-south component of the prevailing wind representative of 80-100 km altitude was deduced for four 24-h observational periods during which partial reflection measurements of D-region electron density were made. These observations indicate southward mean motion during periods of higher electron density and northward mean motion during periods of lower electron density. This is consistent with the idea that increases in the transport of nitric oxide from the auroral zone is a cause of winter increases in D-region electron density at midlatitudes.

Boundary-fitted curvilinear coordinate systems for solution of partial differential equations on fields containing any number of arbitrary two-dimensional bodies

A method is presented for automatic numerical generation of a general curvilinear coordinate system with coordinate lines coincident with all boundaries of a general multi-connected two-dimensional region containing any number of arbitrarily shaped bodies. No restrictions are placed on the shape of the boundaries, which may even be time-dependent, and the approach is not restricted in principle to two dimensions. With this procedure the numerical solution of a partial differential system may be done on a fixed rectangular field with a square mesh with no interpolation required regardless of the shape of the physical boundaries, regardless of the spacing of the curvilinear coordinate lines in the physical field, and regardless of the movement of the coordinate system in the physical plane. A number of examples of coordinate systems and application thereof to the solution of partial differential equations are given. The FORTRAN computer program and instructions for use are included.

Modular polynomial arithmetic in partial fraction decomposition

Algorithms for general partial fraction decomposition are obtained by using modular polynomial arithmetic. An algorithm is presented to compute inverses modulo a power of a polynomial in terms of inverses modulo that polynomial. This algorithm is used to make an improvement in the Kung-Tong partial fraction decomposition algorithm.

A theoretical investigation of the aerodynamics of low-aspect-ratio wings with partial leading-edge separation

A numerical method is developed to predict distributed and total aerodynamic characteristics for low aspect-ratio wings with partial leading-edge separation. The flow is assumed to be steady and inviscid. The wing boundary condition is formulated by the quasi-vortex-lattice method. The leading-edge separated vortices are represented by discrete free vortex elements which are aligned with the local velocity vector at mid-points to satisfy the force free condition. The wake behind the trailing-edge is also force free. The flow tangency boundary condition is satisfied on the wing, including the leading- and trailing-edges. Comparison of the predicted results with complete leading-edge separation has shown reasonably good agreement. For cases with partial leading-edge separation, the lift is found to be highly nonlinear with angle of attack.

Furnace brazing under partial vacuum

Brazing furnace utilizing partial-vacuum technique reduces tooling requirements and produces better bond. Benefit in that partial vacuum helps to dissociate metal oxides that inhibit metal flow and eliminates heavy tooling required to hold parts together during brazing.

Some optimal partial-unit-memory codes

A class of time-invariant binary convolutional codes is defined, called partial-unit-memory codes. These codes are optimal in the sense of having maximum free distance for given values of R, k (the number of encoder inputs), and mu (the number of encoder memory cells). Optimal codes are given for rates R = 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, and 2/3, with mu not greater than 4 and k not greater than mu + 3, whenever such a code is better than previously known codes. An infinite class of optimal partial-unit-memory codes is also constructed based on equidistant block codes.

Emission characteristics of a premix combustor fueled with a simulated partial-oxidation product gas

A two-stage gas turbine combustor concept employing a very fuel-rich partial oxidation stage is being explored for broadening the combustion margin between ultralow emissions and the lean stability limit. Combustion and emission results are presented for a series of experiments where a simulated partial oxidation product gas was used in a premix combustor operated with inlet air state conditions typical of cruise power for high-performance aviation engines (12 atm and 850 F). Ultralow NOx, CO, and HC emissions and an extended lean burning limit were achieved simultaneously.

Lyman-alpha rocket spectra and models of the quiet and active solar chromosphere based on partial redistribution diagnostics

Absolute intensity Lyman-alpha profiles with a spatial resolution of 0.8 min and a spectral resolution of 50 mA were obtained for network and cell regions in the quiet sun, umbral and penumbral areas of a sunspot, two plages, and a quiescent prominence of the limb. Weak limb brightening shown by the Lyman-alpha cores and wings are consistent with predictions derived from partial redistribution line transfer calculations. Through use of a comoving two-level partial redistribution code which conserves mass flux, unequal red and blue Lyman-alpha peak intensities may be interpreted as flow velocities near 20,000 K. Outflows in the plages and downflows in the network are also noted. A model of a mean quiet sun chromosphere consistent with the Lyman-alpha integrated intensity, the Lyman continuum slope, and the millimeter continuum is presented.

Effective thermal conductivity of fully and partially saturated metal wicks

The purpose of the study is threefold: (1) to perform accurate experiments covering a wide range of porosities to determine the effective thermal conductivity of sintered fiber porous metals fully saturated with air, water, and water vapor; (2) to propose correlations for these cases, and to compare these correlations with existing analytical predictions, experimental correlations and data; and (3) to determine the effective thermal conductivity of porous metals partially saturated with water and water vapor, respectively. The experimental apparatus, based on the steady-state method of comparison, is designed and used for determining the effective thermal conductivity. The wicks are made of nickel 200, stainless steel 430, and copper, covering a porosity range 0.30-0.67. Based on the experimental results, a single correlation is derived for predicting the effective thermal conductivity of all wicks fully saturated with air, water, and water vapor. For two partially saturated wick specimens with both high porosity and large matrix thermal conductivity, a liquid-vapor transition zone is observed between the phases, which increases the total combined effective thermal conductivity of the specimen.

Effect of degree of fuel vaporization upon emissions for a premixed partially vaporized combustion system

An experimental and analytical study of the combustion of partially vaporized fuel-air mixtures was performed to assess the impact of the degree of fuel vaporization upon emissions for a premixing-prevaporizing flametube combustor. Data collected in this study showed near linear increases in nitric oxide emissions with decreasing vaporization at equivalence ratios of 0.6. For equivalence ratios of 0.72, the degree of vaporization had very little impact on nitric oxide emissions. A simple mechanism which accounts for the combustion of liquid droplets in partially vaporized mixtures was found to agree with the measured results with fair accuracy with respect to both trends and magnitudes.

Voltage feed through apparatus having reduced partial discharge

A voltage feed-through apparatus, having reduced partial discharge, has an electrical conductor and an electrical terminal connected thereto. A semiconductor sleeve surrounds the conductor for reducing the electric field concentration at the metallic conductor surface and consequently reducing the partial discharge occurrences. An insulator sleeve encircles the semiconductor sleeve. A metallic sleeve surrounds a portion of the terminal. Another insulator is connected to the metallic sleeve and surrounds a portion of the insulator sleeve forming a space therebetween. Another metallic sleeve spaced from the first metallic sleeve surrounds a portion of the other insulator.

A new method of measuring radio source parameters of a partially polarized distributed source from spacecraft observations

An experimental system is analyzed which is designed to determine the angular and polarization properties of low frequency radio sources from measurements made on a spinning spacecraft. The system has been optimized to provide high accuracies for sources at high as well as low elevation angles. Theoretical expressions are derived for the response of this system to a partially polarized point source. Integrations are then carried out to get the system response to a uniform circular distributed source. Data processing techniques are derived so that computer simulations can be carried out to investigate the accuracy of this technique. It is shown that using 24 measurements of a partially polarized source (with Q = U = V = 0.5), taken in one spacecraft rotation, the resulting rms errors in angular position are less than one degree and the errors in determining the Stokes parameters are generally 1-10% for a wide range of source elevations.

Analysis of effect of flameholder characteristics on lean, premixed, partially vaporized fuel-air mixtures quality and nitrogen oxides emissions

An analysis was conducted of the effect of flameholding devices on the precombustion fuel-air characteristics and on oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions for combustion of premixed partially vaporized mixtures. The analysis includes the interrelationships of flameholder droplet collection efficiency, reatomization efficiency and blockage, and the initial droplet size distribution and accounts for the contribution of droplet combustion in partially vaporized mixtures to NOx emissions. Application of the analytical procedures is illustrated and parametric predictions of NOx emissions are presented.

Free fall - A partial unique motion environment

Conditions leading to the elicitation of motion sickness have been divided into two main categories: partial motion environments, in which head movements are required to elicit motion sickness, and complete motion environments, in which independent movements of the head are not required for the production of symptoms. It is postulated that, according to this categorization, free fall constitutes a partial motion environment. In support of this hypothesis evidence is reviewed from Skylab missions, experiments in parabolic flight, and ground-based studies.

Melt segregation from partially molten source regions - The importance of melt density and source region size

An investigation is conducted regarding the changes expected in the density contrast between basic melts and peridotites with increasing pressure using the limited data available on the compressibilities of silicate melts and data on the densities of mantle minerals. It is concluded that since compressibilities of silicate melts are about an order of magnitude greater than those of mantle minerals, the density contrast between basic melts and mantle minerals must diminish significantly with increasing pressure. An earlier analysis regarding the migration of liquid in partially molten source regions conducted by Walker et al. (1978) is extended, giving particular attention to the influence of the diminished density contrast between melt and residual crystals with increasing source region depth and to the influence of source region size. This analysis leads to several generalizations concerning the factors influencing the depths at which magmas will segregate from their source regions and the degrees of partial melting that can be achieved in these source regions before melt segregation occurs.

An experimental study of the flow in a wing with a partial span drooped leading edge

The flow field produced by a low aspect ratio wing (AR = 3.0) with a partial span leading edge droop was investigated in a series of low speed wind tunnel tests (Reynolds number based on 17.8 cm chord = 560,000). Photographs were obtained of surface oil flow patterns over an angle of attack range of alpha = 0 to 29 deg. Flow field surveys of the partially stalled wing at alpha = 25 deg were completed using a hot-wire probe, a split-film probe and a Conrad probe. The flow field survey data was presented using a color video display. The data indicated regions of apparent reversed flow in the separation region behind the wing and indicated the general cross-sectional shape of the separated wake flow.

Refined Monte Carlo method for simulating angle-dependent partial frequency redistributions

A refined algorithm for generating emission frequencies from angle-dependent partial frequency redistribution functions R sub II and R sub III is described. The improved algorithm has as its basis a 'rejection' technique that, for absorption frequencies x less than 5, involves no approximations. The resulting procedure is found to be essential for effective studies of radiative transfer in optically thick or temperature varying media involving angle-dependent partial frequency redistributions.
