Placement Of Exciters And Sensors To Measure Vibrations

Report discusses use of simulated-annealing algorithm to place exciters and sensors of vibrations at nearly optimal positions in complicated structure. Because there are generally fewer exciters and sensors than degrees of freedom in structure, optimal-placement algorithm needed to maximize value of resulting incomplete set of measurements for verification of amplitudes and frequencies of previously-computed vibrational modes.

Optimal placement of actuators and sensors in control augmented structural optimization

A control-augmented structural synthesis methodology is presented in which actuator and sensor placement is treated in terms of (0,1) variables. Structural member sizes and control variables are treated simultaneously as design variables. A multiobjective utopian approach is used to obtain a compromise solution for inherently conflicting objective functions such as strucutal mass control effort and number of actuators. Constraints are imposed on transient displacements, natural frequencies, actuator forces and dynamic stability as well as controllability and observability of the system. The combinatorial aspects of the mixed - (0,1) continuous variable design optimization problem are made tractable by combining approximation concepts with branch and bound techniques. Some numerical results for example problems are presented to illustrate the efficacy of the design procedure set forth.

Parallel simulated annealing algorithms for cell placement on hypercube multiprocessors

Two parallel algorithms for standard cell placement using simulated annealing are developed to run on distributed-memory message-passing hypercube multiprocessors. The cells can be mapped in a two-dimensional area of a chip onto processors in an n-dimensional hypercube in two ways, such that both small and large cell exchange and displacement moves can be applied. The computation of the cost function in parallel among all the processors in the hypercube is described, along with a distributed data structure that needs to be stored in the hypercube to support the parallel cost evaluation. A novel tree broadcasting strategy is used extensively for updating cell locations in the parallel environment. A dynamic parallel annealing schedule estimates the errors due to interacting parallel moves and adapts the rate of synchronization automatically. Two novel approaches in controlling error in parallel algorithms are described: heuristic cell coloring and adaptive sequence control.

Placement Of O-Rings In Solid Rocket Booster

Brief report proposes to modify placement of O-ring seals in joints of Solid Rocket Booster of Space Shuttle. Modified joint and seal essentially "inside-out" version of old joint and seal. O-rings placed between outer side of tang and clevis. Joint rotation pushes tang harder against O-rings, thereby making even tighter seal. Proposal derived from analysis of Space Shuttle Challenger disaster, attributed to failure of these O-ring seals.

Sensor placement for on-orbit modal testing

A systematic procedure of placing accelerometers for the on-orbit modal identification of large flexible space structures is addressed. Target modes for modal testing are selected by examining the modal cost of each mode. Assuming that a time-domain modal identification algorithm such as Eigensystem Realization Algorithm is employed to identify the modes from measured time response data, the sensors are placed to ensure the recovery of the target modes. As an application example of the procedure, an accelerometer placement study for the Space Station Freedom On-Orbit Modal Identification Experiment is presented.

Decentralized-feedback pole placement of linear systems

A projectile product spaces model is used to analyze decentralized systems. The degree of the pole placement map is computed. The conditions under which the degree is odd are also given. Twin lift systems are studied. It is proved that the poles of a twin lift system can be assigned to any values by local static and local dynamic feedback laws if and only if the system is jointly controllable.

Optimal actuator placement in adaptive precision trusses

Actuator placement in adaptive truss structures is to cater to two needs: displacement control of precision points and preloading the elements to overcome joint slackness. Due to technological and financial considerations, the number of actuators available is much less than the degrees of freedom of precision points to be controlled and the degree of redundancy of the structure. An approach for optimal actuator location is outlined. Test cases to demonstrate the effectiveness of the scheme are applied to the Precision Segmented Reflector Truss.

Optimal placement of active elements in control augmented structural synthesis

A methodology for structural/control synthesis is presented in which the optimal location of active members is treated in terms of (0,1) variables. Structural member sizes, control gains and (0,1) placement variables are treated simultaneously as design variables. Optimization is carried out by generating and solving a sequence of explicit approximate problems using a branch and bound strategy. Intermediate design variable and intermediate response quantity concepts are used to enhance the quality of the approximate design problems. Numerical results for example problems are presented to illustrate the efficacy of the design procedure set forth.

On the placement of active members in adaptive truss structures for vibration control

The problem of optimal placement of active members which are used for vibration control in adaptive truss structures is investigated. The control scheme is based on the method of eigenvalue assignment as a means of shaping the transient response of the controlled adaptive structures, and the minimization of required control action is considered as the optimization criterion. To this end, a performance index which measures the control strokes of active members is formulated in an efficient way. In order to reduce the computation burden, particularly for the case where the locations of active members have to be selected from a large set of available sites, several heuristic searching schemes are proposed for obtaining the near-optimal locations. The proposed schemes significantly reduce the computational complexity of placing multiple active members to the order of that when a single active member is placed.

Optimization methods for passive damper placement and tuning

The effectiveness of viscous elements in introducing damping in a structure is a function of several variables, including their number, their location in the structure, and their physical properties. In this paper several optimization problems are posed to optimize these variables. The paper investigates various metrics to define the optimization problem, and compares the damping profiles that are obtained. Both discrete and continuous optimization problems are formulated and solved, corresponding, respectively, to the problems of placement of damping elements and to the tuning of their parameters. The paper particularly emphasizes techniques to make feasible the large scale problems resulting from the optimization formulations. Numerical results involving a lightly damped tested structure are presented.

Self-tuning multivariable pole placement control of a multizone crystal growth furnace

This paper presents the design and implementation of a multivariable self-tuning temperature controller for the control of lead bromide crystal growth. The crystal grows inside a multizone transparent furnace. There are eight interacting heating zones shaping the axial temperature distribution inside the furnace. A multi-input, multi-output furnace model is identified on-line by a recursive least squares estimation algorithm. A multivariable pole placement controller based on this model is derived and implemented. Comparison between single-input, single-output and multi-input, multi-output self-tuning controllers demonstrates that the zone-to-zone interactions can be minimized better by a multi-input, multi-output controller design. This directly affects the quality of crystal grown.

Active strut placement using integer programming for the CSI Revolutionary Model

A method for determining the most effective locations for active struts on large space structures is developed and tested on the NASA CSI Evolutionary Model. Depending on the choice of weighting factors, the method can be used to maximize the maximum modal damping ratio or decay rate, or to maximize a mission-oriented measure of performance. Placement of 8, 16, and 32 active struts out of 1507 candidate truss elements is demonstrated. Preliminary estimates of damping enhancement are reported pending refined structural models and dynamic test results. The method can handle complicated FEM models wih a large number of truss elements and many target modes. It can treat each mode equally or it can emphasize the importance of selected modes. The method can eliminate some combinations of actuator locations based on topological constraints.

Sensitivity of dual-wall structures under hypervelocity impact to multi-layer thermal insulation thickness and placement

Results are presented from an experimental study in which Al dual-wall structures were tested, under various high-speed impact conditions, with a view to the effect of multilayer insulation thickness and location on perforation resistance. Attention is given to comparisons of the damage sustained by dual-wall systems with multilayer insulation blankets of various thicknesses and at various locations within the dual-wall system, under comparable impact loading conditions. The placement of the insulation has a significant effect on the ballistic limit of the dual-wall structures considered, while reducing insulation thickness by as much as a third did not.

A mean field neural network for hierarchical module placement

This paper proposes a mean field neural network for the two-dimensional module placement problem. An efficient coding scheme with only O(N log N) neurons is employed where N is the number of modules. The neurons are evolved in groups of N in log N iteration steps such that the circuit is recursively partitioned in alternating vertical and horizontal directions. In our simulations, the network was able to find optimal solutions to all test problems with up to 128 modules.

The Alpha-Proton-X-ray Spectrometer deployment mechanism: An anthropomorphic approach to sensor placement on Martian rocks and soil

On July 4,1997, the Mars Pathfinder spacecraft lands on Mars and starts conducting technological and scientific experiments. One experiment, the Alpha-Proton-X-ray Spectrometer, uses a sensor head placed against rocks and soil to determine their composition. To guarantee proper placement, a deployment mechanism mounted on the Mars Rover aligns the sensor head to within 20 deg of the rock and soil surfaces. In carrying out its task, the mechanism mimics the action of a human hand and arm. Consisting of a flexible wrist, a parallel link arm, a brush dc motor actuator, and a revolutionary non-pyrotechnic fail-safe release device, the mechanism correctly positions the sensor head on rocks as high as 0.29 m and on targets whose surfaces are tilted as much as 45 deg from the nominal orientation of the sensor head face. The mechanism weighs less than 0.5 kg, can withstand 100 g's, and requires less than 2.8 N x m of actuation torque. The fail-safe coupler utilizes Cerrobend, a metal alloy that melts at 60 C, to fuse the actuator and the rest of the mechanism together. A film heater wrapped around the coupler melts the metal, and Negator springs drive the mechanism into its stowed position. The fail-safe actuates using 6.75 Watts for 5 minutes in the event of an actuator failure.

Mechanical characterization of two thermoplastic composites fabricated by automated tow placement

AS4/PEEK towpreg and IM7/Radel 8320 slit tape were used to make flat panels by automated tow placement. The panels were tested in notched and un-notched tension, notched and un-notched compression and compression after impact (CAI) at room temperature and under hot/wet conditions (notched and un-notched compression and CAI only). The properties were compared with AS4/PEEK tape laminate properties found in the literature. The tow placed AS4/PEEK material was stronger in tension but weaker in compression than the AS4/PEEK tape laminates. The tow placed AS4/PEEK was stronger but less stiff than the tow placed IM7/Radel 8320 in all compression tests. The IM7/Radel performed better in all other mechanical tests. The IM7/Radel outperformed the AS4/PEEK in all CAI tests.
