Gravity as a portal to reheating, leptogenesis and dark matter

We show that a minimal scenario, utilizing only the graviton as an intermediate messenger between the inflaton, the dark sector and the Standard Model (SM), is able to generate simultaneously the observed relic density of dark matter (DM), the baryon asymmetry through leptogenesis, as well as a sufficiently hot thermal bath after inflation. We assume an inflaton potential of the form V(Φ) ∝ Φ k about the minimum at the end of inflation. The possibility of reheating via minimal gravitational interactions has been excluded by constraints on dark radiation for excessive gravitational waves produced from inflation. We thus extend the minimal model in several ways: i) we consider non-minimal gravitational couplings — this points to the parameter range of DM masses M N 1 ≃ 2–10 PeV, and right-handed neutrino masses M N 2 ≃ (5–20) × 10 11 GeV, and T RH ≲ 3 × 10 5 GeV (for k ≤ 20); ii) we propose an explanation for the PeV excess observed by IceCube when the DM has a direct but small Yukawa coupling to the SM; and iii) we also propose a novel scenario, where the gravitational production of DM is a two-step process, first through the production of two scalars, which then decay to fermionic DM final states. In this case, the absence of a helicity suppression enhances the production of DM and baryon asymmetry, and allows a great range for the parameters including a dark matter mass below an MeV where dark matter warmness can be observable by cosmic 21-cm lines, even when gravitational interactions are responsible for reheating. We also show that detectable primordial gravitational wave signals provide the opportunity to probe this scenario for T RH ≲ 5 × 10 6 GeV in future experiments, such as BBO, DECIGO, CE and ET.

Dark matter through the quark vector current portal

We consider models of light dark matter coupled to quarks through a vector current interaction. For low energies, these models must be treated through the effective couplings to mesons, which are implemented here through the chiral Lagrangian. We find the rates of dark matter annihilation and decay to the light mesons, and find the expected photon spectrum from the decay of the hadrons. We compare to current and future observations, and show that there is a significant discovery reach for these models.

Dark radiation constraints on portal interactions with hidden sectors

Here, we update dark radiation constraints on millicharged particle (MCP) and gauged baryon-number-minus-lepton-number (B-L) extensions of the Standard Model (SM). In these models, a massive SM gauge singlet mediator couples the SM plasma to additional SM-singlet light degrees of freedom. In the early Universe, these new light particles are populated via the interaction of the SM with the MCP, or the new B-L gauge boson, and act as dark radiation. The presence of dark radiation in the early Universe is tightly constrained by current and upcoming cosmic microwave background (CMB) measurements. We update bounds on MCPs from current measurements of N eff and show that future CMB experiments will be able to rule out or discover the extended MCP model invoked to explain the EDGES anomaly. Our analysis of the gauged B-L model goes beyond previous studies by including quantum-statistical and out-of-equilibrium effects. Further, we account for the finite lifetime of the B-L gauge boson, which boosts the subsequent right-handed neutrino energy density. We also develop a number of approximations and techniques for simplifying and solving the relevant Boltzmann equations. We use our approximations to develop a lower bound on the radiation density in a generic hidden sector with a light relic that is insensitive to the details of the hidden sector, provided the mediator interacts more strongly with the hidden sector than with the SM.

The secondary metabolism collaboratory: a database and web discussion portal for secondary metabolite biosynthetic gene clusters

Secondary metabolites are small molecules produced by all corners of life, often with specialized bioactive functions with clinical and environmental relevance. Secondary metabolite biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) can often be identified within DNA sequences by various sequence similarity tools, but determining the exact functions of genes in the pathway and predicting their chemical products can often only be done by careful, manual comparative analysis. To facilitate this, we report the first release of the secondary metabolism collaboratory (SMC), which aims to provide a comprehensive, tool-agnostic repository of BGC sequence data drawn from all publicly available and user-submitted bacterial and archaeal genome and contig sources. On the website, users are provided a searchable catalog of putative BGCs identified from each source, along with visualizations of gene and domain annotations derived from multiple sequence analysis tools. SMC’s data is also available through publicly-accessible application programming interface (API) endpoints to facilitate programmatic access. Users are encouraged to share their findings (and search for others’) through comment posts on BGC and source pages. At the time of writing, SMC is the largest repository of BGC information, holding 13.1M BGC regions from 1.3M source sequences and growing, and can be found at https://smc.jgi.doe.gov.
