Multispectral data compression through transform coding and block quantization

Transform coding and block quantization techniques are applied to multispectral aircraft scanner data, and digitized satellite imagery. The multispectral source is defined and an appropriate mathematical model proposed. The Karhunen-Loeve, Fourier, and Hadamard encoders are considered and are compared to the rate distortion function for the equivalent Gaussian source and to the performance of the single sample PCM encoder.

Reduction of quantization error in measurement of frequency

Method reduces quantization errors using new digital circuit. Circuit provides very high resolution (10 to the minus 2nd power to 10 to the minus 3rd power Hz) without high-speed counters. It lends itself to microminaturization and is simple to construct. Unknown frequency is compared to standard frequency by means of zero-crossing coincidence-detecting circuit.

Quantized vortices around wavefunction nodes. II

The expectation of quantized vortices around the nodes of wavefunctions is formulated in terms of Schroedinger quantum mechanics, and the derivation is shown to depend only on the requirement that the wavefunction be single-valued and continuous. The implications of circulation for the topology of the nodes are discussed, and consideration is given to the nodes and circulation of a smooth wavefunction in D dimensions and to the significance of exceptional nodal points. The theoretical results are illustrated by an example of an infinite field of regularly spaced vortices.

Quantization and symmetry in periodic coverage patterns with applications to earth observation

Analytical approaches based on an idealized physical model and concepts from number theory show that in periodic coverage patterns, uniquely defined by their revolution numbers R (orbital) and N (rotational), the subnodal points are earth-fixed, and they divide the equator into R equal segments of length s. The ascending subsatellite trace crosses each point once (only) each period. The descending subnodal points coincide with the ascending points if the integers N and R have like parity, and bisect the intervals between them if opposite. The interval between consecutive unidirectional crossings is Ns. Symmetries extend the equatorial results to all parallels of latitude. Complete periodic patterns of traces exhibit an overall symmetry, with trace intersections confined to discrete coordinate values which are quantized in longitude (basic s-unit) and symmetric in latitude.

Quantization and symmetry in periodic coverage patterns with applications to earth observation

The general orbit-coverage problem in a simplified physical model is investigated by application of numerical approaches derived from basic number theory. A system of basic and general properties is defined by which idealized periodic coverage patterns may be characterized, classified, and delineated. The principal common features of these coverage patterns are their longitudinal quantization, determined by the revolution number R, and their overall symmetry.

Floating-point system quantization errors in digital control systems

This paper considers digital controllers (filters) operating in floating-point arithmetic in either open-loop or closed-loop systems. A quantization error analysis technique is developed, and is implemented by a digital computer program that is based on a digital simulation of the system. The program can be integrated into existing digital simulations of a system.

Approximate constants of motion for classically chaotic vibrational dynamics - Vague tori, semiclassical quantization, and classical intramolecular energy flow

Substantial short time regularity, even in the chaotic regions of phase space, is found for what is seen as a large class of systems. This regularity manifests itself through the behavior of approximate constants of motion calculated by Pade summation of the Birkhoff-Gustavson normal form expansion; it is attributed to remnants of destroyed invariant tori in phase space. The remnant torus-like manifold structures are used to justify Einstein-Brillouin-Keller semiclassical quantization procedures for obtaining quantum energy levels, even in the absence of complete tori. They also provide a theoretical basis for the calculation of rate constants for intramolecular mode-mode energy transfer. These results are illustrated by means of a thorough analysis of the Henon-Heiles oscillator problem. Possible generality of the analysis is demonstrated by brief consideration of classical dynamics for the Barbanis Hamiltonian, Zeeman effect in hydrogen and recent results of Wolf and Hase (1980) for the H-C-C fragment.

Second quantization techniques in the scattering of nonidentical composite bodies

Second quantization techniques for describing elastic and inelastic interactions between nonidentical composite bodies are presented and are applied to nucleus-nucleus collisions involving ground-state and one-particle-one-hole excitations. Evaluations of the resultant collision matrix elements are made through use of Wick's theorem.

Effects of quantization on symbol stream combining in a convolutionally coded system

Symbol stream combining has been proposed as a method for arraying signals at different antennas. If the received symbol streams are recorded on tape, it is desirable to limit the required storage without significantly affecting the performance. It is shown that 4-bit quantized symbols introduce an E sub b/N sub o penalty of only 0.05 dB.

Application of a VLSI vector quantization processor to real-time speech coding

Attention is given to a working vector quantization processor for speech coding that is based on a first-generation VLSI chip which efficiently performs the pattern-matching operation needed for the codebook search process (CPS). Using this chip, the CPS architecture has been successfully incorporated into a compact, single-board Vector PCM implementation operating at 7-18 kbits/sec. A real time Adaptive Vector Predictive Coder system using the CPS has also been implemented.

Wave-packet evolution and quantization

A general relationship is established between wave-packet evolution and quantization in classically integrable systems. Because of wave-packet spreading, one cannot simply take the Fourier transform of the time evolution of a wave-packet. Instead, one must propagate the wave-packet using the actions as Hamiltonians. The energy eigenvalues which result are the Einstein-Brillouin-Keller values, and new forms for the eigenfunctions appear. These are free of caustic singularities, and represent averages of wave packets over the invariant torus.

Analysis and improvement of the vector quantization in SELP (Stochastically Excited Linear Prediction)

The Stochastically Excited Linear Prediction (SELP) algorithm is described as a speech coding method employing a two-stage vector quantization. The first stage uses an adaptive codebook which efficiently encodes the periodicity of voiced speech, and the second stage uses a stochastic codebook to encode the remainder of the excitation signal. The adaptive codebook performs well when the pitch period of the speech signal is larger than the frame size. An extension is introduced, which increases its performance for the case that the frame size is longer than the pitch period. The performance of the stochastic stage, which improves with frame length, is shown to be best in those sections of the speech signal where a high level of short-term correlations is present. It can be concluded that the SELP algorithm performs best during voiced speech where the pitch period is longer than the frame length.

Systolic architectures for vector quantization

A family of architectural techniques are proposed which offer efficient computation of weighted Euclidean distance measures for nearest-neighbor codebook searching. The general approach uses a single metric comparator chip in conjunction with a linear array of inner product processor chips. Very high vector-quantization (VQ) throughput can be achieved for many speech and image-processing applications. Several alternative configurations allow reasonable tradeoffs between speed and VLSI chip area required.

Field quantization and squeezed states generation in resonators with time-dependent parameters

The problem of electromagnetic field quantization is usually considered in textbooks under the assumption that the field occupies some empty box. The case when a nonuniform time-dependent dielectric medium is confined in some space region with time-dependent boundaries is studied. The basis of the subsequent consideration is the system of Maxwell's equations in linear passive time-dependent dielectric and magnetic medium without sources.

Recursive optimal pruning with applications to tree structured vector quantizers

A pruning algorithm of Chou et al. (1989) for designing optimal tree structures identifies only those codebooks which lie on the convex hull of the original codebook's operational distortion rate function. The authors introduce a modified version of the original algorithm, which identifies a large number of codebooks having minimum average distortion, under the constraint that, in each step, only modes having no descendents are removed from the tree. All codebooks generated by the original algorithm are also generated by this algorithm. The new algorithm generates a much larger number of codebooks in the middle- and low-rate regions. The additional codebooks permit operation near the codebook's operational distortion rate function without time sharing by choosing from the increased number of available bit rates. Despite the statistical mismatch which occurs when coding data outside the training sequence, these pruned codebooks retain their performance advantage over full search vector quantizers (VQs) for a large range of rates.
