Robustness properties of LQG optimized compensators for collocated rate sensors

In this paper we study the robustness with respect to stability of the closed-loop system with collocated rate sensor using LQG (mean square rate) optimized compensators. Our main result is that the transmission zeros of the compensator are precisely the structure modes when the actuator/sensor locations are 'pinned' and/or 'clamped': i.e., motion in the direction sensed is not allowed. We have stability even under parameter mismatch, except in the unlikely situation where such a mode frequency of the assumed system coincides with an undamped mode frequency of the real system and the corresponding mode shape is an eigenvector of the compensator transfer function matrix at that frequency. For a truncated modal model - such as that of the NASA LaRC Phase Zero Evolutionary model - the transmission zeros of the corresponding compensator transfer function can be interpreted as the structure modes when motion in the directions sensed is prohibited.

Image gathering and processing - Information and fidelity

In this paper we formulate and use information and fidelity criteria to assess image gathering and processing, combining optical design with image-forming and edge-detection algorithms. The optical design of the image-gathering system revolves around the relationship among sampling passband, spatial response, and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Our formulations of information, fidelity, and optimal (Wiener) restoration account for the insufficient sampling (i.e., aliasing) common in image gathering as well as for the blurring and noise that conventional formulations account for. Performance analyses and simulations for ordinary optical-design constraints and random scences indicate that (1) different image-forming algorithms prefer different optical designs; (2) informationally optimized designs maximize the robustness of optimal image restorations and lead to the highest-spatial-frequency channel (relative to the sampling passband) for which edge detection is reliable (if the SNR is sufficiently high); and (3) combining the informationally optimized design with a 3 by 3 lateral-inhibitory image-plane-processing algorithm leads to a spatial-response shape that approximates the optimal edge-detection response of (Marr's model of) human vision and thus reduces the data preprocessing and transmission required for machine vision.

Robust fuel- and time-optimal control of uncertain flexible space structures

The problem of computing open-loop, fuel- and time-optimal control inputs for flexible space structures in the face of modeling uncertainty is investigated. Robustified, fuel- and time-optimal pulse sequences are obtained by solving a constrained optimization problem subject to robustness constraints. It is shown that 'bang-off-bang' pulse sequences with a finite number of switchings provide a practical tradeoff among the maneuvering time, fuel consumption, and performance robustness of uncertain flexible space structures.

Optimal rejection of persistent disturbances, robust stability, and mixed sensitivity minimization

The problem of optimal disturbance rejection of bounded persistent disturbances is solved in the general nonsquare case. The minimum value of the objective function can be obtained by solving a semiinfinite linear programming problem, and an iterative procedure for obtaining approximate solutions is introduced. Application of the l1-optimal problem to robustness is discussed. A mixed sensitivity problem is formulated and shown to guarantee good disturbance rejection in the presence of plant perturbations.

The use of singular value gradients and optimization techniques to design robust controllers for multiloop systems

A method for designing robust feedback controllers for multiloop systems is presented. Robustness is characterized in terms of the minimum singular value of the system return difference matrix at the plant input. Analytical gradients of the singular values with respect to design variables in the controller are derived. A cumulative measure of the singular values and their gradients with respect to the design variables is used with a numerical optimization technique to increase the system's robustness. Both unconstrained and constrained optimization techniques are evaluated. Numerical results are presented for a two-input/two-output drone flight control system.

Decentralized control of large-scale systems: Fixed modes, sensitivity and parametric robustness

The problem of stabilization/pole placement under structural constraints of large scale linear systems is discussed. The existence of a solution to this problem is expressed in terms of fixed modes. The aim is to provide a bibliographic survey of the available results concerning the fixed modes (characterization, elimination, control structure selection to avoid them, control design in their absence) and to present the author's contribution to this problem which can be summarized by the use of the mode sensitivity concept to detect or to avoid them, the use of vibrational control to stabilize them, and the addition of parametric robustness considerations to design an optimal decentralized robust control.

Advancing Concentrating Solar Thermal Modeling Using System Advisor Model (SAM)

Concentrating solar thermal (CST) technologies play a critical role in enabling dispatchable power and high-temperature industrial heat applications. Accurate and flexible modeling tools are essential for evaluating system performance, guiding technology research and development, and informing investment decisions. The National Laboratory of the Rockies's System Advisor Model (SAM) is a widely used techno-economic simulation platform for CST systems, providing detailed performance and financial modeling capabilities for multiple CST system configurations. SAM integrates physics-based performance models with financial analysis to simulate the behavior of complex energy systems under realistic operating conditions. For CST technologies (including tower, parabolic trough, and linear Fresnel), SAM enables hourly simulations using site-specific weather data that ensure feasible operating conditions and convergence of mass and energy between core system components (i.e., solar field, receiver, thermal energy storage, and power cycle). These capabilities allow researchers and developers to evaluate annual energy production, capacity factors, levelized cost of energy (LCOE), and system dispatch strategies. A key advantage of SAM lies in its flexibility for parametric analysis and large-scale computational studies. Users can vary system design parameters such as heliostat field layout, receiver dimensions, thermal energy storage capacity, power block sizing, and installation cost assumptions to investigate their impact on system performance and financial metrics. When combined with automated scripting through LK, SDKTool, or Python interfaces, SAM enables high-throughput simulation workflows that support sensitivity analysis, technology benchmarking, and optimization studies. These approaches are particularly valuable for next-generation CST concepts, where design spaces are large and system interactions are complex. Another important capability of SAM is its support for dispatch optimization and thermal energy storage modeling, which are central to the value proposition of CST technologies. The ability to simulate integrated storage and flexible power generation allows researchers to explore strategies that maximize grid value, improve capacity utilization, and enhance integration with variable resources such as photovoltaic and wind generation. This poster will present an overview of SAM's thermal system modeling capabilities including concentrating solar. Additionally, we will highlight new feature developments including: 1) implementing Google's OR-Tools optimization platform for faster and more robust dispatch optimization, 2) developing a new power load following controller for modeling behind-the-meter applications, 3) enabling direct modeling of CSP-PV hybrid systems with the inclusion of battery storage, and 4) developing a multi-receiver falling particle Gen3 system model.

Control law synthesis and stability robustness improvement using constrained optimization techniques

The present generic optimization procedure for a continuous or discrete control law (of arbitrary order), which will be applicable to a multiinput-multioutput system, is upon constraining used to satisfy conflicting design requirements on the mean-square responses and stability robustness at the plant input and output. The synthesis procedure is especially suitable for flexible airframes and large space structures modeled by a high-order state-space system of equations. Analytical expressions are obtained for the gradients of the cost function, together with design constraints on the mean-square response and minimum singular value.

Image gathering, coding, and processing: End-to-end optimization for efficient and robust acquisition of visual information

Researchers are concerned with the end-to-end performance of image gathering, coding, and processing. The applications range from high-resolution television to vision-based robotics, wherever the resolution, efficiency and robustness of visual information acquisition and processing are critical. For the presentation at this workshop, it is convenient to divide research activities into the following two overlapping areas: The first is the development of focal-plane processing techniques and technology to effectively combine image gathering with coding, with an emphasis on low-level vision processing akin to the retinal processing in human vision. The approach includes the familiar Laplacian pyramid, the new intensity-dependent spatial summation, and parallel sensing/processing networks. Three-dimensional image gathering is attained by combining laser ranging with sensor-array imaging. The second is the rigorous extension of information theory and optimal filtering to visual information acquisition and processing. The goal is to provide a comprehensive methodology for quantitatively assessing the end-to-end performance of image gathering, coding, and processing.

Stability robustness improvement using constrained optimization techniques

In a multiloop feedback control system, stability margin improvement by singular value shaping can be achieved by a noise adjustment procedure. A direct method for shaping singular value spectrum using constrained optimization technique is described. The design algorithm minimizes a standard LQG performance index while trying to satisfy minimum singular value constraints at the plant input, or output, or at both. Selected parameters of a stabilizing control law are used as the design variables. The capabilities of this method are demonstrated using a two input two output system representing a drone aircraft and its lateral attitude control system.

Distributionally Robust Variational Quantum Algorithms With Shifted Noise

Given their potential to demonstrate near-term quantum advantage, variational quantum algorithms (VQAs) have been extensively studied. Although numerous techniques have been developed for VQA parameter optimization, it remains a significant challenge. A practical issue is the high sensitivity of quantum noise to environmental changes, and its propensity to shift in real time. This presents a critical problem as an optimized VQA ansatz may not perform effectively under a different noise environment. For the first time, we explore how to optimize VQA parameters to be robust against unknown shifted noise. We model the noise level as a random variable with an unknown probability density function (PDF), and we assume that the PDF may shift within an uncertainty set. This assumption guides us to formulate a distributionally robust optimization problem, with the goal of finding parameters that maintain effectiveness under shifted noise. We utilize a distributionally robust Bayesian optimization solver for our proposed formulation. This provides numerical evidence in both the Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA) and the Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) with hardware-efficient ansatz, indicating that we can identify parameters that perform more robustly under shifted noise. We regard this work as the first step towards improving the reliability of VQAs influenced by real-time noise.

Robust eigenstructure assignment by a projection method - Applications using multiple optimization criteria

A methodology for robust eigenstructure assignment for multivariable feedback systems is presented. The algorithm is based upon a pole placement technique using projections onto subspaces of admissible eigenvectors. New ideas are introduced to generate target (desired) sets of unitary eigenvectors and determine optimal feasible eigenvectors in a least-square sense. Useful connections are established between the pole-placement by independent modal space control and the method introduced in this paper. A multicriterion optimization algorithm is also presented, which takes efficient advantage of the present eigenstructure assignment method. These developments show significant improvement over an earlier version of this algorithm in both computational cost and accuracy. This optimization process appears to be numerically robust and suitable for high-dimensional multicriterion optimizations; it is especially attractive for computer-aided design of control systems.

Robustness, generality and efficiency of optimization algorithms in practical applications

The theoretical foundations of two approaches, sequential quadratic programming (SQP) and optimality criteria (OC), are analyzed and compared, with emphasis on the critical importance of parameters such as accuracy, generality, robustness, efficiency, and ease of use in large scale structural optimization. A simplified fighter wing and active control of space structures are considered with other example problems. When applied to general system identification problems, the OC methods are shown to lose simplicity and demonstrate lack of generality, accuracy and robustness. It is concluded that the SQP method with a potential constraint strategy is a better choice as compared to the currently prevalent mathematical programming and OC approaches.
