LandScan Global 2023: Silver Edition

For a quarter of a century, the LandScan Global (LSG) project has annually released a global, high-resolution gridded population dataset representing the ambient or unwarned population at a 30 arcsecond resolution. LSG supports a range of applications such as emergency management, disaster response, and human health and security for understanding populations at risk. The 2023 release of LSG, the LandScan Silver Edition, represents a major methodological leap forward while also leveraging previous knowledge—the previous year was the baseline for the current annual update carrying forward valuable knowledge of the built environment for the past quarter century—to train the machine learning models. Compared with annual releases over the past 24years, multiple advancements were made to different aspects of the methodology to achieve reproducibility, transparency, and consistent global propagation of solutions to modeling or population distribution issues identified during the review process. These novel changes include incorporation of the latest available geospatial inputs across the globe, machine learning models instead of manual modifications, population feature importance analysis, open-source solutions vs. proprietary software, generation of multiple global versions, analytic validations, and human-in-the-loop revisions to produce the final version. Additionally, algorithms—such as anomaly detection—were introduced to quickly identify areas of focus to develop a new and robust systematic review. Significant changes in modeled population distributions were observed between the 2022 and 2023 releases, largely attributable to improvements in data and methods and discussed thoroughly within this report. In summation, the LandScan Silver Edition leverages the best of the past quarter century of LSG legacy knowledge and continues a tradition of applying cutting-edge enhancements to serve as a new benchmark for accurate, actionable gridded population data

A silver ion water sterilization system

Small amounts of silver are incorporated in mixture of ion exchange resins, and water passing through this mixture is thus exposed to silver ion concentration. System is useful in self-contained water systems except city water systems where residual chlorine level is stipulated.

Silver stain for electron microscopy

Ammoniacal silver stain used for light microscopy was adapted advantageously for use with very thin biological sections required for electron microscopy. Silver stain can be performed in short time, has more contrast, and is especially useful for low power electron microscopy.

Studies of reaction geometry in oxidation and reduction of the alkaline silver electrode

Two methods of surface area estimations of sintered silver electrodes have given roughness factors of 58 and 81. One method is based on constant current oxidation, the other is based on potentiostatic oxidation. Examination of both wire and sintered silver electrodes via scanning electron microscopy at various stages of oxidation have shown that important structural features are mounds of oxide. In potentiostatic oxidations these appear to form on sites instantaneously nucleated while in constant current oxidations progressive nucleation is indicated.

Mechanisms for the adhesion of silver to glow discharge sensitized perfluorinated ethylene propylene (PEP)

Details are given for the deposition of silver onto FEP for a batch coater capable of handling 864 square inches at a time. The effectiveness of the glow discharge is shown to be optimum when the FEP faces the anode. Using solid state theory based upon the work function difference, and the heuristic assumption that the surface of FEP is populated with fluoride ions, it is argued that an anode sensitized surface develops states receptive to electron transfer from silver, whereas a cathode sensitized surface is polarized only, and as a result cannot permanently trap charge. Thermodynamic arguments given show that an order of magnitude of 10 to the 9th power electrons are transferred into states to a depth of 10 nm.

A reliable all-silver front contact for silicon solar cells

The feasibility of making an adherent and moisture degradation resistant silver-only front contact to silicon solar cells was demonstrated. Optimum fabrication processes and process sequences were determined for making such contacts. These contacts were found to also have good electrical characteristics. A back contact of aluminum-silver was also developed. This proved very satisfactory for low-temperature applications.

The creep properties of dispersion-strengthened silver-gallium oxide alloys.

Steady-state creep rates were measured for two preparations of a dispersion-strengthened alloy of silver with 1 mol % gallium oxide. One preparation, an internally-oxidized type, had a grain size 40 times that of the other preparation, which was a consolidated-powder type of alloy. The temperature and stress dependence of the steady-state creep rate differs widely for the two alloys and must be attributed to the difference in grain size. The activation energy for steady-state creep of the internally-oxidized coarse grained material is near that for self-diffusion of silver, which strongly indicates a creep process controlled by dislocation climb.

The solar abundance of silver.

Low noise, high resolution spectral scans have been obtained for the resonance lines of silver (3280.7 and 3382.9 A), observed at the center of the solar disk. The data are analyzed by the method of spectral synthesis, wherein we employ a model atmosphere resembling Elste's (1968) model, and checked by limb-darkening observations. The present kinematical model adopts a macroturbulent velocity of 2.2 km/sec and no microturbulence. With this model line profiles can be reproduced without invoking implausibly large collisional damping constants. The silver abundance turns out to be a factor of four under the value found from the Type I carbonaceous chondrites.

Preparation of thin film silver fluoride electrodes from constituent elements

The feasibility of preparing thin-film metal fluoride electrodes from the elemental constituents has been demonstrated. Silver fluoride cathodes were prepared by deposition of silver on a conducting graphite substrate followed by fluorination under controlled conditions using elemental fluorine. The resulting electrodes were of high purity, and the variables such as size, shape, and thickness were easily controlled.

Influence of various surface pretreatments on adherence of sputtered molybdenum disulfide to silver, gold, copper, and bronze

Solid film lubricants of radio frequency sputtered molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) were applied to silver, gold, copper, and bronze surfaces that had various pretreatments (mechanical polishing, sputter etching, oxidation, and sulfurization). Optical and electron transmission micrographs and electron diffraction patterns were used to interpret the film formation characteristics and to evaluate the sputtering conditions in regard to the film and substrate compatibility. Sputtered MoS2 films flaked and peeled on silver, copper, and bronze surfaces except when the surfaces had been specially oxidized. The flaking and peeling was a result of sulfide compound formation and the corresponding grain growth of the sulfide film. Sputtered MoS2 films showed no peeling and flaking on gold surfaces regardless of surface pretreatment.

Heat-sterilized silver oxide-zinc cells: Cycle life studies

A JPL study was conducted to evaluate the cell design parameters that contribute to the cycle life of sealed, heat-sterilized silver oxide-zinc cells. Test cells having a rated capacity of 4.2 A-h were fabricated using zinc oxide electrodes prepared by the sintered Teflon process. Two separator variations were evaluated, one having acrylic acid and the other methacrylic acid grafted to irradiated polyethylene film. Significant results of this study include the following: (1) cycle life in excess of 300 cycles was attained; (2) a zinc oxide/silver stoichiometric ratio of 1.5 resulted in greater cycle life than a ratio of 1.1, and similar cycle life to cells having a ratio of 2; (3) cells having methacrylic acid grafted separators suffered somewhat less in capacity loss due to zinc electrode shape change than cells having acrylic acid type; (4) use of acrylic acid grafted separators was slightly superior to the methacrylic acid type in respect to silver penetration; and (5) the inclusion of a layer of potassium titanate paper adjacent to the zinc electrodes resulted in cells that achieved higher cycle life before any of the group failed than that reached by cells of any other construction.

A reliable all-silver front contact for silicon solar cells.

Methods have been found to apply an adherent and humidity resistant silver-only front contact to n on p silicon solar cells. The critical processing step was the removal of the diffused oxide layer. Humidity resistance is superior to present day commercial titanium-silver contacts and the electrical characteristics of the cells are excellent. Titanium, which is degraded by humidity and which is a source of heavy metal poisoning, has been eliminated from the contact.

Sealed silver oxide zinc cells for orbiting and planetary missions.

Several test programs were carried out to determine the performance and limitations of sealed, silver oxide zinc cells for (1) 24-hr synchronous orbits, (2) orbits that would require a maximum of six cycles per day, and (3) missions to other planets requiring maintenance of maximum capacity for probe operations during planet encounter. The results are summarized to provide power system designers with guidelines bearing on capacity maintenance during cycling, cycle life, charged stand effects, and internal pressure characteristics. The life of zinc silver oxide cells is shown to be limited to one to two years over the temperature range of 0 to 24 C.
