Li-Ion Batteries for Space Applications: High Specific Energy and Wide-Operating Temperature

Compared to the conventional Ni-Co oxides (with or without AI additions), the NMC (1/3:1/3:1/3) cathode provides marginal improvement in specific capacity. However, some of the formulations based on the solid solutions of layered Li2Mn03 and LiM02 (M = Mn0.5Ni0.5} have shown capacities as high as 250 mAh/g, combined with high cell voltages (4.5 V) and with the likelihood of enhanced thermal stability. Multi-component electrolytes with low EC-proportions and selected co-solvents provide significant improvement in the low temperature performance, down to -60 C, combined with the non-flammable attribute from the co-solvents. The NMC cathode shows good compatibility with the carbonate-based low temperature electrolytes. Impressive performances have been realized at low temperatures of <= 30 C. Electrolytes with high salt concentration and high EC content fare well at room temperatures, while the formulations with low EC content and low salt concentration are preferred at low temperatures. DPA studies reveal increased SEI growth on the electrodes, especially anode, upon irradiation. Performance of low temperature electrolytes in prototype cells corroborate the findings from laboratory cells.

Modern Space Craft - Antique Specifications

Spacecraft now and of the future are being controlled by EMC requirements of the past. Little has been done by the launch vehicle/spacecraft manufacturers to abandon MIL-STD-461C which was released in 1986 because most of the electronics equipment being used aboard current launch vehicles is approved by similarity and heritage to MIL-STD-46 1 C and its predecessors. Twenty years later these electronic equipment items are still not tested to today's MIL-STD-461E requirements because there is a risk that the items will fail to meet the requirements and thus the cost will increase if it becomes necessary to redesign the equipment. That cost is insignificant compared with the cost of losing an entire mission! In the 20 years that have elapsed since MIL-STD-461C was released, the EMC environment has undergone major changes. High speed digital devices have been created that have fundamental clock and bus frequencies that span the entire LV/SC frequency range from the Flight Termination Systems through C and S-Band telemetry. Personnel involved in ground operations routinely carry and use hand held transceivers and cellular telephones close by sensitive electronics equipment. There are now many more orbiting receivers and emitters, plus range assets have increased dramatically since 2001. It's way past time to bring requirements up-to-date!

Architectural Implementation of NASA Space Telecommunications Radio System Specification

This software demonstrates a working implementation of the NASA STRS (Space Telecommunications Radio System) architecture specification. This is a developing specification of software architecture and required interfaces to provide commonality among future NASA and commercial software-defined radios for space, and allow for easier mixing of software and hardware from different vendors. It provides required functions, and supports interaction with STRS-compliant simple test plug-ins ("waveforms"). All of it is programmed in "plain C," except where necessary to interact with C++ plug-ins. It offers a small footprint, suitable for use in JPL radio hardware. Future NASA work is expected to develop into fully capable software-defined radios for use on the space station, other space vehicles, and interplanetary probes.

Specific features of space-time variations of ozone during the development of intensive tropical disturbances

An analysis of specific features of space-time variations of ozone in the tropical areas which has been performed on the basis of processing of the results of special expedition studies in the Atlantic and Pacific in 1987-1990 and the data of observations at the stations of the world ozonometric network over the 25-year period. The existence of a cause-and-effect relation has been revealed between the processes determining tropical cyclone (TC) development, and specific features of variations of the total content of ozone (TCO) and the vertical distribution of ozone (VDO) in the regions of TC action. Characteristic features of day-to-day and daily variations of TCO during TC development have been found. On the periphery of a developing TC, 1-4 days before it reaches the stage of storm, TCO increases, on average, by 5-8 percent, and a substantial increase in the concentration of ozone occurs in the middle and upper troposphere. The most probable physical mechanisms relating the observed specific features of ozone variations to TC evolution have been suggested. A hypothesis of the possibility of using ozone as an indicator for early prediction of TC development has been substantiated.

Orbital demonstration - The prelude to large operational structures in space

The paper surveys three specific large space structures which have been analyzed to determine the technology needed to achieve a fully operational system. These are the multipurpose platforms; satellite power systems, and a deployable antenna. Further attention is also given to those technology needs which can be satisfied by ground based technology (simulation), such as payload carrier modification or design, platform element connectors and fittings, data compression and storage equipment, man-machine interface and productivity assessment, and astronaut aids. Also covered are those technology and performance parameters which require demonstration in orbit.

Camera memory study for large space telescope

Specifications were developed for a memory system to be used as the storage media for camera detectors on the large space telescope (LST) satellite. Detectors with limited internal storage time such as intensities charge coupled devices and silicon intensified targets are implied. The general characteristics are reported of different approaches to the memory system with comparisons made within the guidelines set forth for the LST application. Priority ordering of comparisons is on the basis of cost, reliability, power, and physical characteristics. Specific rationales are provided for the rejection of unsuitable memory technologies. A recommended technology was selected and used to establish specifications for a breadboard memory. Procurement scheduling is provided for delivery of system breadboards in 1976, prototypes in 1978, and space qualified units in 1980.

Atomic Oxygen Durability of Aluminized Polymers

The atomic oxygen durability of aluminized polymers will be investigated. Such aluminized polymers are commonly used in space and specifically on the International Space Station. Recent data from in-space results indicates that vapor deposited aluminum coatings are highly defected with many small pin windows. However, electron microscopy to validate the size and aerial density of such defects remains to be demonstrated. The research project is planned to compare electron microscopy analysis of pristine and atomic oxygen exposed aluminized polyimide Kapton with the results of ground laboratory atomic oxygen erosion data, in-space results and computational Monte Carlo modeling to develop a self consistent understanding of the atomic oxygen degradation processes and effects.

Direct Energy Conversion for Low Specific Mass In-Space Power and Propulsion

"Changing the game" in space exploration involves changing the paradigm for the human exploration of the Solar System, e.g, changing the human exploration of Mars from a three-year epic event to an annual expedition. For the purposes of this assessment an "annual expedition" capability is defined as an in-space power & propulsion system which, with launch mass limits as defined in NASA s Mars Architecture 5.0, enables sending a crew to Mars and returning them after a 30-day surface stay within one year, irrespective of planetary alignment. In this work the authors intend to show that obtaining this capability requires the development of an in-space power & propulsion system with an end-to-end specific mass considerably less than 3 kg/kWe. A first order energy balance analysis reveals that the technologies required to create a system with this specific mass include direct energy conversion and nuclear sources that release energy in the form of charged particle beams. This paper lays out this first order approximation and details these conclusions.
