Improving cover type identification in speckled SAR images by prefiltering and sequential classification

Synthetic aperture radar utilizes coherent microwaves to produce images of the earth's surface. Due to the interference of coherent wavelets, the images appear speckled. This reduces the performance of per-pel classifiers. One way to increase the performance is to filter the image first, then classify the filtered image. For this purpose, several novel filters that have been reported in the literature are investigated. These are the geometric filter, adaptive LMMSE filter, and linear approximation filter. For comparison, conventional mean and median filters are also considered. It is found that the mean filter with seven iterations gives the best result. The overall performance increased from 65.2 to 88.9 percent. The capability of these filters to preserve edges in the original image are also assessed. It is seen that the geometric and median filters are the best in preserving edges, and that the linear approximation and adaptive LMMSE filters are the best in discriminating roads. Prefiltering the image effectively provides contextual information to the per-pel classifier. An alternate approach is to directly design a contextual classifier. A new contextual classifier based on sequential decision theory is proposed. With this classifier, it is found that the overall performance increases to 89.5 percent.

Two-dimensional surface strain measurement based on a variation of Yamaguchi's laser-speckle strain gauge

A novel optical method of measuring 2-D surface strain is proposed. Two linear strains along orthogonal axes and the shear strain between those axes is determined by a variation of Yamaguchi's laser-speckle strain gage technique. It offers the advantages of shorter data acquisition times, less stringent alignment requirements, and reduced decorrelation effects when compared to a previously implemented optical strain rosette technique. The method automatically cancels the translational and rotational components of rigid body motion while simplifying the optical system and improving the speed of response.

Digital Correlation In Laser-Speckle Velocimetry

Periodic recording helps to eliminate spurious results. Improved digital-correlation process extracts velocity field of two-dimensional flow from laser-speckle images of seed particles distributed sparsely in flow. Method which involves digital correlation of images recorded at unequal intervals, completely automated and has potential to be fastest yet.

Infrared speckle interferometry and spectroscopy of Io

The goal during the last year was to continue the speckle monitoring of volcanic hot spots on Io, and to begin observations of the 1991 series of mutual events between Io and Europa. The former provide a time history of the volcanic activity, while the latter give the highest spatial resolution and the best sensitivity to faint spots. A minor component of the program is lunar occultation observations of young T Tauri stars. The occultations provide milliarcsecond resolution which let us search for circumstellar material and determine which systems are multiple.

Elastic and plastic strain measurement in high temperature environment using laser speckle

Two laser speckle methods are described to measure strain in high temperature environment and thermal strain caused by high temperature. Both are non-contact, non-destructive and remote sensing techniques that can be automated. The methods have different but overlapping ranges of application with one being more suitable for large plastic deformation.

A near infrared speckle imaging study of T Tauri stars

The results of a speckle imaging survey of T Tauri stars suggest that most, if not all, young low mass stars have companions. Repeated observations of these young binary stars have revealed orbital motion in the closest pairs (less than or = 0.3 sec), providing that these systems are indeed gravitationally bound and providing the basis for mass estimates in the upcoming years. These mass estimates are necessary to distinguish between the various binary star formation mechanisms that have been proposed to date.

The multiplicity of T Tauri stars in the star forming regions Taurus-Auriga and Ophiuchus-Scorpius: A 2.2 micron speckle imaging survey

We present the results of a magnitude limited (K less than = 8.5 mag) speckle imaging survey of 69 T Tauri stars in the star forming regions Taurus-Auriga and Ophiuchus-Scorpius. Thirty-three companion stars were found with separations ranging from 0.07 sec to 2.5 sec, nine are new detections. This survey reveals a distinction between the classical T Tauri stars (CTTS) and the weak-lined T Tauri stars (WTTS) based on the binary star frequency as a function of separation: the WTTS binary star distribution is enhanced at the closer separations (less than 50 AU) relative to the CTTS binary star distribution. We suggest that the nearby companion stars shorten the accretion time scale in multiple star systems, thereby accounting for the presence of WTTS that are coeval with many CTTS. The binary star frequency in the projected linear separation range 16 to 252 AU for T Tauri stars (60 (+/- 17)%) is a factor of 4 greater than that of the solar-type main-sequence stars (16(+/- 3)%). Given the limited separation range of this survey, the rate at which binaries are detected suggests that most, if not all, T Tauri stars have companions. We propose that the observed overabundance of companions of T Tauri stars is an evolutionary effect, in which triple and higher order T Tauri stars are disrupted by close encounters with another star or system of stars.

Binary star orbits from speckle interferometry. 5: A combined speckle/spectroscopic study of the O star binary 15 Monocerotis

We report on the discovery of a speckle binary companion to the O7 V (f) star 15 Monocerotis. A study of published radial velocities in conjunction with new measurements from Kitt Peak National Observatory (KPNO) and IUE suggests that the star is also a spectroscopic binary with a period of 25 years and a large eccentricity. Thus, 15 Mon is the first O star to bridge the gap between the spectroscopic and visual separation regimes. We have used the star's membership in the cluster NGC 2264 together with the cluster distance to derive masses of 34 and 19 solar mass for the primary and secondary, respectively. Several of the He I line profiles display a broad shallow component which we associate with the secondary, and we estimate the secondary's classification to be O9.5 Vn. The new orbit leads to several important predictions that can be tested over the next few years.

Laser speckle strain and deformation sensor using linear array image cross-correlation method for specifically arranged triple-beam triple-camera configuration

The invention provides a method of triple-beam and triple-sensor in a laser speckle strain/deformation measurement system. The triple-beam/triple-camera configuration combined with sequential timing of laser beam shutters is capable of providing indications of surface strain and structure deformations. The strain and deformation quantities, the four variables of surface strain, in-plane displacement, out-of-plane displacement and tilt, are determined in closed form solutions.

Visualization of a Sweeping Jet by Laser Speckle Retro-reflective Background Oriented Schlieren

Sweeping jet actuators are currently being studied as a method of active flow control to increase the performance of wings and tails. Computational Fluid Dynamics simulations show that the jet does not sweep at a constant rate, instead spending more time at the minimum and maximum of its extent. As part of a test done to provide dynamic flow measurements for Computation Fluid Dynamics validation in NASA Ames Fluid Mechanics Lab, Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) was performed on a single sweeping jet actuator designed by NASA and Boeing that was inset in a small airfoil. However, even at low jet pressures, the PIV could not be acquired at high enough frequencies to both spatially and temporally resolve the stickiness of the jet motion. Therefore, a small portion of the PIV laser was picked off and used to acquire flow visualization at higher frequencies through a new technique, laser speckle Retroreflective Background Oriented Schlieren (RBOS).

Speckle contrast from the split-and-delay unit with seeded X-ray pulses of the MID instrument at European XFEL

We report on the coherence properties and characteristics of the split- and-delay unit at the Materials Imaging and Dynamics instrument of the European XFEL under seeded-beam conditions. Our investigation focuses on the speckle contrast extracted from the scattering patterns from static scatterers and pulse splitting characteristics. Seeded-beam operation enabled a high throughput of the split-and-delay unit. We highlight the invaluable potential of the split-and-delay unit for experimental investigations for enhancing our understanding of ultrafast phenomena in molecular liquids, such as water and aqueous solutions.
