Radar investigation of asteroids and planetary satellites

Radar reconnaissance of near-Earth asteroids, mainbelt asteroids, the Galilean satellites, the Martian satellites, and large Saturnian satellites, using the Arecibo 13-cm and the Goldstone 3.5-cm systems is discussed. Measurements of echo strength, polarization, delay/Doppler distribution of echo power provide information about dimensions, spin vector, large-scale topography, cm-to-m-scale morphology, and surface bulk density. The observations also yield refined estimates of target orbital elements.

Dipolar Heteronuclear Correlation Solid-State NMR Experiments between Half-Integer Quadrupolar Nuclei: The Case of 11 B– 17 O

With 73% of all NMR-active nuclei being quadrupolar, there is great interest in the development of NMR experiments that can probe the proximity of quadrupolar spins. Here, pulse sequences for magic-angle spinning (MAS) 11 B– 17 O resonance-echo saturation-pulse double-resonance (RESPDOR) and dipolar heteronuclear multiple quantum correlation (D-HMQC) solid-state NMR experiments were investigated. In these pulse sequences, rotational-echo double-resonance (REDOR) recoupling was used with central transition (CT)-selective π-pulses applied to either the 11 B or 17 O spins to recouple 11 B– 17 O dipolar interactions. 11 B{ 17 O} RESPDOR experiments on 17 O-enriched boric acid and benzene diboronic acid showed that application of dipolar recoupling on the 11 B channel yielded more signal dephasing than when recoupling is applied on the 17 O channel; however, short effective 11 B transverse relaxation time constants (T 2 ') hinder the acquisition of dephasing curves out to long recoupling durations. Application of REDOR recoupling to 17 O spins was found to produce significant dephasing without compromising the 11 B T 2 '. Comparison of experimental 11 B{ 17 O} RESPDOR curves to those of numerical simulations enabled the 17 O isotopic enrichment to be estimated. 2D 11 B{ 17 O} D-HMQC spectra were recorded with either 11 B or 17 O REDOR recoupling under a variety of radio frequency field conditions. Lastly, 2D 11 B{ 17 O} and 23 Na{ 17 O} D-HMQC spectra of an 17 O-enriched sodium borate glass were acquired to demonstrate the practical application of these heteronuclear correlation experiments to probe structural connectivity between two quadrupolar spins. Importantly, the high-field 2D 11 B– 17 O D-HMQC NMR spectrum revealed two unique 17 O sites correlating to 4-coordinate BO 4 ( [4] B), which were attributed to the [3] B–O– [4] B and [4] B–O– [4] B bridging O atoms. Furthermore, the heteronuclear correlation experiments outlined here should be applicable to a variety of quadrupolar spin pairs.

Measuring Black Hole Light Echoes with Very Long Baseline Interferometry

Light passing near a black hole can follow multiple paths from an emission source to an observer due to strong gravitational lensing. Photons following different paths take different amounts of time to reach the observer, which produces an echo signature in the image. The characteristic echo delay is determined primarily by the mass of the black hole, but it is also influenced by the black hole spin and inclination to the observer. In the Kerr geometry, echo images are demagnified, rotated, and sheared copies of the direct image and lie within a restricted region of the image. Echo images have exponentially suppressed flux, and temporal correlations within the flow make it challenging to directly detect light echoes from the total light curve. In this Letter, we propose a novel method to search for light echoes by correlating the total light curve with the interferometric signal at high spatial frequencies, which is a proxy for indirect emission. We explore the viability of our method using numerical general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations of a near-face-on accretion system scaled to M87-like parameters. We demonstrate that our method can be used to directly infer the echo delay period in simulated data. An echo detection would be clear evidence that we have captured photons that have circled the black hole, and a high-fidelity echo measurement would provide an independent measure of fundamental black hole parameters. Our results suggest that detecting echoes may be achievable through interferometric observations with a modest space-based very long baseline interferometry mission.

Substrate-controlled dynamics of spin qubits in low dimensional van der Waals materials

We report a theoretical study of the coherence dynamics of spin qubits in two-dimensional materials (2DMs) and van der Waals heterostructures, as a function of the host thickness and the composition of the surrounding environment. We focus on MoS2 and WS2, two promising systems for quantum technology applications, and we consider the decoherence arising from the interaction of the spin qubit with nuclear spins. We show that the Hahn-echo coherence time is determined by a complex interplay between the source of decoherence in the qubit host and in the environment, which in turn determines whether the noise evolution is in a classical or quantum mechanical regime. We suggest that the composition and thickness of van der Waals heterostructures encapsulating a qubit host can be engineered to maximize coherence times. Finally, we discuss how quantum sensors may be able to probe the dynamics of the nuclear bath in 2DMs.

Radio Plasma Imager Simulations and Measurements

The Radio Plasma Imager (RPI) will be the first-of-its kind instrument designed to use radio wave sounding techniques to perform repetitive remote sensing measurements of electron number density (N(sub e)) structures and the dynamics of the magnetosphere and plasmasphere. RPI will fly on the Imager for Magnetopause-to-Aurora Global Exploration (IMAGE) mission to be launched early in the year 2000. The design of the RPI is based on recent advances in radio transmitter and receiver design and modern digital processing techniques perfected for ground-based ionospheric sounding over the last two decades. Free-space electromagnetic waves transmitted by the RPI located in the low density magnetospheric cavity will be reflected at distant plasma cutoffs. The location and characteristics of the plasma at those remote reflection points can then be derived from measurements of the echo amplitude, phase, delay time, frequency, polarization, Doppler shift, and echo direction. The 500 m tip-to-tip X and Y (spin plane) antennas and 20 m boom Z axis antenna on RPI will be used to measures echoes coming from distances of several R(sub E).

Theoretical and experimental study of the nitrogen-vacancy center in 4H-SiC.

Using first-principles calculations and magnetic resonance experiments, we investigated the physical properties of the negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in 4H-SiC, a promising spin qubit. Our predictive theoretical model in conjunction with experimental measurements reveals a large sensitivity to strain and symmetry. The measured and computed zero-phonon lines (ZPLs) are in agreement and show a consistent trend as a function of the defect location in the crystal. The computed ZPLs are extremely sensitive to the geometrical configurations of the ground and excited states, and large supercells with more than 2 000 atoms are required to obtain accurate numerical results. We find that the computed decoherence time of the basal NV centers at zero magnetic field is substantially larger than that of the axial configurations. Furthermore, at natural nuclear spin abundance and zero field, the Hahn-echo coherence time of one of the basal configurations is similar to that of the axial divacancy in isotopically purified SiC.

Adiabatic quantum decoherence in many non-interacting subsystems induced by the coupling with a common boson bath

Highlights: • System–environment quantum correlation: a main solid state NMR decoherence channel. • Non-separable system–environment model yields realistic spin decoherence rates. • New open quantum system approach explains irreversible decay of refocused NMR echoes. • Adiabatic quantum decoherence is inherently irreversible and eigen-selective. This work addresses adiabatic quantum decoherence of many-body spin systems coupled with a boson field in the framework of open quantum systems theory. We generalize the traditional spin-boson model by considering a system–environment interaction Hamiltonian that represents a partition of non-interacting subsystems and highlights the collective correlation that appears exclusively due to the coupling with a common environment. Remarkably, this simple, exactly solvable model encompasses relevant aspects of a many-body open quantum system and features the subtle quantum effects that arise when the size scales up to a macroscopic level. We derive an analytical expression for the time dependence of the density matrix elements (in the preferred basis) without assuming coarse-graining. The resulting decoherence function is eigen-selective and is a complex exponential whose exponent has a real part that introduces a decay similar to that in the spin-boson model. On the contrary, the imaginary part depends on the quantum numbers and geometry of the whole partition and does not reflect the system temperature. Motivated by decoherence in solid-state NMR, and in search of realistic numerical estimations, we apply the theoretical results to a partition of dipole-coupled spin pairs in contact with a common phonon bath, using typical parameters of hydrated salts. The proposal allows estimating the decoherence time scale in terms of the system physical constants: sound velocity and eigenvalue distribution width. As a significant novelty, the decoherence function phase depends on the eigenvalue distribution throughout the sample. It plays the leading role, overshadowing the mechanism associated with the bath thermal state. Finally, we apply the formalism to describe decoherence in the “magic echo” NMR reversal experiment. We find that the system–environment correlation explains the origin of irreversibility, and both the decoherence rate value and its dependence on the dipolar frequency, are remarkably similar to the experiment.

New technique for single-scan T1 measurements using solid echoes

A simple technique for single-scan T1 measurements in solids is proposed and analyzed for single exponential spin-lattice relaxation. In this technique, the direct spin heating caused by the sampling process is significantly reduced in comparison with conventional techniques by utilizing the 'solid echo' to refocus the magnetization. The applicability of this technique to both the solid and liquid phases is demonstrated.

Broadband Fourier-Transform-Detected EPR at W-Band

This manuscript reports development of wideband Fourier transform (FT) electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) detection capability at the uniquely high frequency of 94 GHz. Here, this technique is based on the HiPER spectrometer developed at the University of St. Andrews, into which we have integrated an arbitrary waveform generator (AWG) that is used to modulate the output from a solid-state multiplier chain prior to amplification, generating up to 1 kW microwave power with 1 GHz bandwidth. Benchmark experiments are presented for a standard TEMPOL radical, which comprises a 500 MHz broad EPR spectrum at 94 GHz. Using a single frequency-swept microwave pulse, efficient inversion of this spectrum is demonstrated, enabling frequency-dependent studies of the magnetization relaxation in the time-domain, again via broadband echo detection. From these measurements, an anisotropy in the spin–lattice relaxation time, T 1 , can be determined with ease for TEMPOL. In addition, we implement the FT detection scheme for multi-dimensional (electron–electron double resonance, or ELDOR) experiments, demonstrating the full capabilities of the HiPER spectrometer. As an example, we present FT-detected version of the ELDOR-detected nuclear magnetic resonance technique for the TEMPOL radical. We also describe potential applications of the new instrumentation for studies of gadolinium qubits.

Radar Observations of Asteroids 7 Iris, 9 Metis, 12 Victoria, 216 Kleopatra, and 654 Zelinda

We report 13-cm wavelength radar observations of the main-belt asteroids 7 Iris, 9 Metis, 12 Victoria, 216 Kleopatra, and 654 Zelinda obtained at Arecibo between 1980 and 1989. The echoes are highly polarized yet broadly distributed in Doppler frequency, indicating that our targets are smooth on decimeter scales but very rough on some scale(s) larger than about I m. The echo spectra are generally consistent with existing size, shape, and spin information based on radiometric, lightcurve, and occultation data. All of our targets possess distinctive radar signatures that reveal large- scale topography. Reflectivity spikes within narrow ranges of rotation phase suggest large flat regions on Iris, Metis, and Zelinda, while bimodal spectra imply nonconvex, possibly bifurcated shapes for Kleopatra and Victoria. Kleopatra has the highest radar albedo yet measured for a main-belt asteroid, indicating a high metal concentration and making Kleopatra the best main-belt candidate for a core remnant of a differentiated and subsequently disrupted parent body. Upon completion of the Arecibo telescope upgrade, there will be several opportunities per year to resolve main-belt asteroids with hundreds of delay-Doppler cells, which can be inverted to provide estimates of both three-dimensional shape and radar scattering properties.

Engineering diamond interfaces free of dark spins

Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond are utilized extensively as quantum sensors for imaging fields at the nanoscale. The ultrahigh sensitivity of NV magnetometers has enabled the detection and spectroscopy of individual electron spins, with potentially far-reaching applications in condensed matter physics, spintronics, and molecular biology. However, the surfaces of these diamond sensors naturally contain electron spins, which create a background signal that can be hard to differentiate from the signal of the target spins. In this study, we develop a surface modification approach that eliminates the unwanted signal of these so-called dark electron spins. Our surface passivation technique, based on coating diamond surfaces with a thin titanium oxide (Ti⁢O 2 ) layer, reduces the dark spin density. The observed reduction in dark spin density aligns with our findings on the electronic structure of the diamond-Ti⁢O 2 interface. The reduction, from a typical value of 2000 μm −2 to a value below that set by the detection limit of our NV sensors (200 μm −2 ), results in a twofold increase in Hahn-echo coherence time of near surface NV centers. Furthermore, we derive a comprehensive spin model that connects dark spin relaxation with NV coherence, providing additional insights into the mechanisms behind the observed spin dynamics. Our findings are directly transferable to other quantum platforms, including nanoscale solid-state qubits and superconducting qubits.

Pulling Order Back from the Brink of Disorder: Observation of a Nodal-Line Spin Liquid and Fluctuation Stabilized Order in K 2 ⁢IrCl 6

Competing interactions in frustrated magnets can give rise to highly degenerate ground states from which correlated liquidlike states of matter often emerge. The scaling of this degeneracy influences the ultimate ground state, with extensive degeneracies potentially yielding quantum spin liquids, while subextensive or smaller degeneracies yield static orders. A long-standing problem is to understand how ordered states precipitate from this degenerate manifold and what echoes of the degeneracy survive ordering. Here, we use neutron scattering to experimentally demonstrate a new “nodal-line” spin liquid, where spins collectively fluctuate within a subextensive manifold spanning one-dimensional lines in reciprocal space. Realized in the spin-orbit-coupled, face-centered-cubic iridate K 2 ⁢IrCl 6 , we show that the subextensive degeneracy is robust, but remains susceptible to fluctuations or longer-range interactions which cooperate to select a magnetic order at low temperatures. Proximity to the nodal-line spin liquid influences the ordered state, enhancing the effects of quantum fluctuations that in turn act to stabilize the sublattice magnetization through the self-consistent opening of a large spin-wave gap. Our results demonstrate how quantum fluctuations can act counterintuitively in frustrated materials: Even in a case where fluctuations are ineffective at selecting an ordered state from a degenerate manifold, at the brink of the nodal spin liquid, they can act to protect the ordered state and dictate its low-energy physics.

Radar aperture synthesis observations of asteroids

We report of Goldstone-VLA, radar aperture-synthesis observations of the mainbelt asteroids 324 Bamberga and 7 Iris and the near-Earth asteroids 1991 EE and 4179 Toutatis. Simultaneous resolution of echoes in both angle and Doppler frequency provide new constraints on the mainbelt asteroids' pole directions: Bamberga's spin vector is within 40 deg of the south ecliptic pole, and the twofold ambiguity in Iris' pole direction (P. Magnusson, 1989) is resolved in favor of the ecliptic coordinates lambda = 15 deg, beta = +25 deg. For Bamberga, monostatic and bistatic radar echoes and VLA thermal-emission measurements, also reported here, are consistent with radiometric estimates of Bamberga's size and with the hypothesis that the asteroid is overlain by a regolith having a porosity of approximately 50%. Our near-Earth asteroid measurements required the development of new on-line VLA software that allows imaging of objects that are in the telescope's `near field.' This software has been successfully tested on Toutatis at a distance of 0.06 AU and will be essential for VLA observations of Earth-approaching comets.

Electron spin coherence on a solid neon surface

We report a single electron floating on the surface of a condensed noble-gas liquid or solid can act as a spin qubit with ultralong coherence time, thanks to the extraordinary purity of such systems. Previous studies suggest that the electron spin coherence time on a superfluid helium (He) surface can exceed 100 s. In this paper, we present theoretical studies of the electron spin coherence on a solid neon (Ne) surface, motivated by our recent experimental realization of single-electron charge qubit on solid Ne. The major spin decoherence mechanisms investigated include the fluctuating Ne diamagnetic susceptibility due to thermal phonons, the fluctuating thermal current in normal metal electrodes, and the quasi-statically fluctuating nuclear spins of the 21 Ne ensemble. We find that at a typical experimental temperature about 10 mK in a fully superconducting device, the electron spin decoherence is dominated by the third mechanism via electron–nuclear spin–spin interaction. For natural Ne with 2700 ppm abundance of 21 Ne, the estimated inhomogeneous dephasing time ${T}_{2}^{*}$ is around 0.16 ms, already better than most semiconductor quantum-dot spin qubits. For commercially available, isotopically purified Ne with 1 ppm of 21 Ne, ${T}_{2}^{*}$ can be 0.43 s. Under the application of Hahn echoes, the coherence time T 2 can be improved to 30 ms for natural Ne and 81 s for purified Ne. Therefore, the single-electron spin qubits on solid Ne can serve as promising new spin qubits.

Multimode Storage of Quantum Microwave Fields in Electron Spins over 100 ms

In this work, we report long coherence times (up to 300 ms) for near-surface bismuth donor electron spins in silicon coupled to a superconducting microresonator, biased at a clock transition. This enables us to demonstrate the partial absorption of a train of weak microwave fields in the spin ensemble, their storage for 100 ms, and their retrieval, using a Hahn-echo-like protocol. Phase coherence and quantum statistics are preserved in the storage.
