Axions, higher-groups, and emergent symmetry

Axions, periodic scalar fields coupled to gauge fields through the instanton density, have a rich variety of higher-form global symmetries. These include a two-form global symmetry, which measures the charge of axion strings. As we review, these symmetries typically combine into a higher-group, a kind of non-abelian structure where symmetries that act on operators of different dimensions, such as points, lines, and strings, are mixed. We use this structure to derive model independent constraints on renormalization group flows that realize theories of axions at long distances. These give universal inequalities on the energy scales where various infrared symmetries emerge. For example, we show that in any UV completion of axion-Yang-Mills, the energy scale at which axion strings can decay is always larger than the mass scale of charged particles.

Scattering of Magnons at Graphene Quantum-Hall-Magnet Junctions

Motivated by recent nonlocal transport studies of quantum-Hall-magnet (QHM) states formed in monolayer graphene’s N = 0 Landau level, here we study the scattering of QHM magnons by gate-controlled junctions between states with different integer filling factors ν . For the ν = 1 | – 1 | 1 geometry we find that magnons are weakly scattered by electric potential variation in the junction region, and that the scattering is chiral when the junction lacks a mirror symmetry. For the ν = 1 | 0 | 1 geometry, we find that kinematic constraints completely block magnon transmission if the incident angle exceeds a critical value. Our results explain the suppressed nonlocal–voltage signals observed in the ν = 1 | 0 | 1 case. We use our theory to propose that valley waves generated at ν = – 1 | 1 junctions and magnons can be used in combination to probe the spin or valley flavor structure of QHM states at integer and fractional filling factors.

Positivity and geometric function theory constraints on pion scattering

This paper presents the fascinating correspondence between the geometric function theory and the scattering amplitudes with O(N) global symmetry. A crucial ingredient to show such correspondence is a fully crossing symmetric dispersion relation in the z-variable, rather than the fixed channel dispersion relation. We have written down fully crossing symmetric dispersion relation for O(N) model in z-variable for three independent combinations of isospin amplitudes. We have presented three independent sum rules or locality constraints for the O(N) model arising from the fully crossing symmetric dispersion relations. We have derived three sets of positivity conditions. We have obtained two-sided bounds on Taylor coefficients of physical Pion amplitudes around the crossing symmetric point (for example, π + π – → π 0 π 0 ) applying the positivity conditions and the Bieberbach-Rogosinski inequalities from geometric function theory.

Accidental suppression of Wilson coefficients in Higgs coupling

Higgs couplings are essential probes for physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM) since they can be modified by new physics, such as through the Higgs portal interaction |H| 2 Ο. These modifications influence Higgs interactions via dimension-6 operators of the form (∂|H| 2 ) 2 and |H| 6 , which are generally expected to be of comparable size. This paper discusses a phenomenon of accidental suppression, where the |H| 6 coupling is significantly smaller than (∂|H| 2 ) 2 . This suppression, arising from the truncation of the tree-level effective potential, lacks a clear symmetry explanation but persists in portal models. This paper aims to inspire further studies on additional instances of accidental suppression without symmetry explanations or a general framework to characterize such suppression. We also discuss constraints, at the HL-LHC and future colliders, on the Wilson coefficients of the two dimension-6 operators for various benchmark scenarios of the concrete model.

The electroweak precision constraints of the 2HDM+S

The 2HDM+S is the singlet extension of the Two-Higgs-Doublets Model (2HDM). The singlet field and its mixing with the 2HDM Higgs sector lead to new contributions to the electroweak precision observables, in particular, the oblique parameters. In this paper, we performed a systematic study of the impacts of each mixing angle to the oblique parameters. We adopted the mixing angles and physical Higgs masses as our parameters, which allows a mapping when specific symmetry structure of the Higgs potential and various theoretical considerations are taken into account. We identify five benchmark cases, where at most one mixing angle is nonzero and analyze the 95\% C.L. allowed parameter space by the oblique parameters. In the alignment limit of the 2HDM, we find that other than the usual mass relations of $m_H\sim m_{H^\pm}$ or $m_A\sim m_{H^\pm}$, electroweak precision measurements also impose an upper limit on the neutral Higgs masses. In the cases with nonzero singlet mixing with the 2HDM Higgses $H$ or $A$, we find approximate mass relations of $c^2_{\alpha_{HS}} m_{H} + s^2_{\alpha_{HS}}m_{h_S} = m_{H^\pm}$ or $c^2_{\alpha_{AS}} m_{A} + s^2_{\alpha_{AS}}m_{A_S} = m_{H^\pm}$. Those relations are universal to the 2HDM+S models, with or without further symmetry assumption. We also study the non-alignment limit of the 2HDM+S, which typically has tighter constraints on the masses and mixing angles. At the end, we examine the complementarity between the electroweak precision analyses and the Higgs coupling precision measurements.

Fractonic coset construction for spontaneously broken translations

We study the homogeneous breaking of spatial translation symmetry concomitantly with the spontaneous breaking of other internal and spacetime symmetries, including dilations. We use the symmetry-breaking pattern as the only input to derive, via the coset construction, general effective field theories for the symmetry-originated modes associated with Goldstone’s theorem, namely the Nambu-Goldstone candidates. Through explicit computations, we show that integrating out the explicit massive Nambu-Goldstone candidates or imposing symmetric constraints, namely the inverse Higgs constraints, to express massive modes in terms of the massless ones leads to physically distinct effective field theories. This sensitivity to the chosen method can be traced back to the homogeneous breaking of translations, the homogeneous aspect of the breaking induces a mixing between internal and spacetime symmetries at the level of the Lie algebra. This, in turn, leads to subtle discussions about the inverse Higgs constraints, in particular that they lead to a loss of generality in our specific examples. The derived general effective field theories also give rise to a broad class of theories exhibiting emergent enhanced shift symmetries, which constrain the mobility of the modes. The latter are referred to as fractonic modes. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Supersymmetry with scalar sequestering

Supersymmetric models with a strongly interacting superconformal hidden sector (HS) may drive soft supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking scalar masses, bilinear soft term B μ and Higgs combinations m H u , d 2 + μ 2 to small values at some intermediate scale, leading to unique sparticle mass spectra along with possibly diminished fine-tuning in spite of a large superpotential μ parameter. We set up a computer code to calculate such spectra, which are then susceptible to a variety of constraints: (1) possible charge-or-color breaking (CCB) minima in the scalar potential, (2) unbounded from below (UFB) scalar potential, (3) improper electroweak symmetry breaking, (4) a charged or sneutrino lightest SUSY particle (LSP), (5) generating m h ∼ 125 GeV , (6) consistency with LHC sparticle mass limits, and (7) naturalness. We find this bevy of constraints leaves little or no viable parameter space for the case where hidden sector dynamics dominates minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) running, even for the case of nonuniversal gaugino masses. For the case with moderate HS running with comparable MSSM running, and with universal gaugino masses, then the fine-tuning is ameliorated, but nonetheless remains high. Viable spectra with moderate HS running and with low fine-tuning and large μ can be found for nonuniversal gaugino masses. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Winding θ and destructive interference of instantons

While the θ dependence of field theories is 2π periodic, the ground-state wavefunctions at θ and θ + 2π often belong to different classes of symmetry-protected topological states. When this is the case, a continuous change of the θ parameter can introduce an interface that supports a nontrivial field theory localized on the wall. We consider the 2d CP N-1 sigma model as an example and construct a weak-coupling setup of this interface theory by considering the small S1 compactification with nonzero winding θ parameter and a suitable symmetry-twisted boundary condition. This system has N classical vacua connected by fractional instantons, but the anomaly constraint tells us that the fractional-instanton amplitudes should vanish completely to have N-fold degeneracy at the quantum level. We show how this happens in this purely bosonic system, uncovering that the integration over the zero modes annihilates the fractional instanton amplitudes, in sharp contrast to what happens when the θ angle is constant. Moreover, we provide another explanation of this selection rule by showing that the N perturbative vacua acquire different charges under the global symmetry with the activation of the winding θ angle. We also demonstrate a similar destructive interference between instanton effects in the CP N-1 quantum mechanics with the Berry phase.

Electric dipole moments, new forces and dark matter

New sources of CP violation beyond the Standard Model are crucial to explain the baryon asymmetry in the Universe. We discuss the impact of new CP violating interactions in theories where a dark matter candidate is predicted by the cancellation of gauge anomalies. In these theories, the constraint on the dark matter relic density implies an upper bound on the new symmetry breaking scale from which all new states acquire their masses. We investigate in detail the predictions for electric dipole moments and show that if the relevant CP-violating phase is large, experiments such as the ACME collaboration will be able to fully probe the theory.

Bootstrapping smooth conformal defects in Chern-Simons-matter theories

Abstract The expectation value of a smooth conformal line defect in a CFT is a conformal invariant functional of its path in space-time. For example, in largeNholographic theories, these fundamental observables are dual to the open-string partition function in AdS. In this paper, we develop a bootstrap method for studying them and apply it to conformal line defects in Chern-Simons matter theories. In these cases, the line bootstrap is based on three minimal assumptions — conformal invariance of the line defect, largeNfactorization, and the spectrum of the two lowest-lying operators at the end of the line. On the basis of these assumptions, we solve the one-dimensional CFT on the line and systematically compute the defect expectation value in an expansion around the straight line. We find that the conformal symmetry of a straight defect is insufficient to fix the answer. Instead, imposing the conformal symmetry of the defect along an arbitrary curved line leads to a functional bootstrap constraint. The solution to this constraint is found to be unique.

Recent advances in chiral EFT based nuclear forces and their applications

During the past two decades, chiral effective field theory has evolved into a powerful tool to derive nuclear forces from first principles. Nearly all two-nucleon interactions have been worked out up to sixth order of chiral perturbation theory, while, with few exceptions, three-nucleon forces, which play a subtle, but crucial role in microscopic nuclear structure calculations, have been derived up to fifth order. We review the current status of these forces as well as their applications in nuclear many-body systems. While the ab initio description of light nuclei is generally very successful, we point out and analyze problems encountered with medium-mass nuclei. We also survey the construction of equations of state for symmetric nuclear matter and neutron-rich matter based on chiral forces. A focal point is the symmetry energy and its impact on neutron skins and systems of astrophysical relevance. The physics of neutron-rich systems, from nuclei to compact stars, is essentially determined by the density dependence of the symmetry energy. Here, we review the status of predictions in comparison with latest empirical constraints, with particular attention to those extracted from parity-violating electron scattering.

Mechanisms of shape transfer and preheating in indirect-drive double shell collisions

Implosions of Hohlraum-driven double shell targets as an alternative inertial confinement fusion concept are underway at the National Ignition Facility. The double shell system relies on a series of energy transfer processes starting from thermal x-ray absorption by the outer shell, followed by collisional transfer of kinetic energy to a heavy metal inner shell, and finally, conversion to the internal energy of the deuterium-tritium fuel. During each of these energy transfer stages, low-mode asymmetries can act to reduce the ideal transfer efficiency degrading double shell performance. Mechanisms, such as hard x-ray preheat from the Hohlraum, not only decrease the efficiency of kinetic energy transfer but may also be a source of low-mode asymmetry. In this article, we evaluate the shape transfer processes through the time of shell collision using two-dimensional integrated Hohlraum and capsule computations. We find that the dominant mode of the shape transfer is well described using a “radial impulse” model from the shape of the foam pressure reservoir. To evaluate the importance of preheat on inner shell shape, we also report on first measurements of Au L-shell preheat asymmetry in a double shell with a tungsten pusher. These measurements showed a 65% higher preheat velocity at the pole of the capsule relative to the equator. We also found that the experiments provided rigorous constraints by which to test the Hohlraum model settings that impact the amount and symmetry of Au L-shell preheat via the plasma conditions inside the outer cone Au bubble.

Berry phase in quantum field theory: Diabolical points and boundary phenomena

We study aspects of Berry phase in gapped many-body quantum systems by means of effective field theory. Once the parameters are promoted to spacetime-dependent background fields, such adiabatic phases are described by Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) and similar terms. In the presence of symmetries, there are also quantized invariants capturing generalized Thouless pumps. Consideration of these terms provides constraints on the phase diagram of many-body systems, implying the existence of gapless points in the phase diagram which are stable for topological reasons. We describe such diabolical points, realized by free fermions and gauge theories in various dimensions, which act as sources of "higher Berry curvature" and are protected by the quantization of the corresponding WZW terms or Thouless pump terms. Here, these are analogous to Weyl nodes in a semimetal band structure. We argue that in the presence of a boundary, there are boundary diabolical points---parameter values where the boundary gap closes---which occupy arcs ending at the bulk diabolical points. Consideration of the topological effective action for the parameters also provides some new checks on conjectured infrared dualities and deconfined quantum criticality in 2+1d.

Higher Flavor Symmetries in the Standard Model

Abstract A study of the generalized global flavor symmetries of the Standard Model is initiated. The presence of nonzero triangle diagrams between the U (3) 5 flavor currents and the hypercharge current intertwines them in the form of a higher‐group which mixes the zero‐form flavor symmetries with the one‐form magnetic hypercharge symmetry. This higher symmetry structure greatly restricts the possible flavor symmetries that may remain unbroken in any ultraviolet completion that includes magnetic monopoles. In the context of unification, this implies tight constraints on the combinations of fermion species which may be joined into multiplets. Three of four elementary possibilities are reflected in the classic unification models of Georgi–Glashow, , and Pati–Salam. The final pattern is realized non‐trivially in trinification, which exhibits the sense in which Standard Model Yukawa couplings which violate these flavor symmetries may be thought of as spurions of the higher‐group. Such modifications of the ultraviolet flavor symmetries are possible only if new vector‐like matter is introduced with masses suppressed from the unification scale by the Yukawa couplings.

Accidentally Stable Dark Matter in a Parity Solution to the Strong CP Problem

Parity symmetry, with an extended gauge group $SU(3)_c \times SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R \times U(1)_X$, can solve the strong CP problem. In particular, the model where $SU(2)_R\times U(1)_X$ is broken by the Parity partner of the Standard Model Higgs solves the strong CP problem without the necessity of introducing extra symmetry. We discuss the possibility of accidentally stable dark matter in this framework and show that $SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R$ bi-triplet fermions can be stable over cosmological timescales. We compute the relic abundance of the bi-triplet dark matter and derive constraints on the parameter space from collider, direct-detection, and indirect-detection experiments. The $SU(2)_R\times U(1)_X$ symmetry breaking scale is required to be below 150 TeV, and most of the parameter space can be probed by near-future indirect-detection experiments.

Generalized symmetries of the graviton

We find the set of generalized symmetries associated with the free graviton theory in four dimensions. These are generated by gauge invariant topological operators that violate Haag duality in ring-like regions. As expected from general QFT grounds, we find a set of “electric” and a dual set of “magnetic” topological operators and compute their algebra. To do so, we describe the theory using phase space gauge-invariant electric and magnetic dual variables constructed out of the curvature tensor. Electric and magnetic fields satisfy a set of constraints equivalent to the ones of a stress tensor of a 3d CFT. The constraints give place to a group $\mathbb{R}^{20}$ of topological operators that are charged under space-time symmetries. Finally, we discuss similarities and differences between linearized gravity and tensor gauge theories that have been introduced recently in the context of fractonic systems in condensed matter physics.

Learning new physics from data: A symmetrized approach

Thousands of person years have been invested in searches for new physics (NP), the majority of them motivated by theoretical considerations. Yet, no evidence of beyond the Standard Model physics has been found. This suggests that model-agnostic searches might be an important key to explore NP, and help discover unexpected phenomena which can inspire future theoretical developments. A possible strategy for such searches is identifying asymmetries between data samples that are expected to be symmetric within the Standard Model. We propose exploiting neural networks (NNs) to quickly fit and statistically test the differences between two samples. Our method is based on an earlier work, originally designed for inferring the deviations of an observed dataset from that of a much larger reference dataset. We present a symmetric formalism, generalizing the original one, avoiding fine-tuning of the NN parameters and any constraints on the relative sizes of the samples. Our formalism could be used to detect small symmetry violations, extending the discovery potential of current and future particle physics experiments.

Theories and Constraints for Massive Higher Spins (Final Technical Report)

The goal of this project was to develop methods for constraining the scattering amplitudes of interacting theories containing massive higher spin particles, and to apply these methods to search for, constrain, and apply theories containing massive high spins. During the 3 year term of the project, 15 papers containing results from the project were published in peer reviewed journals. Highlights of these results include: proofs of the best possible strong coupling scales for theories with massive spin 2 particles, causality constraints on couplings in such theories, the discovery of new effective field theories with extended shift symmetries on curved space, the discovery of a new symmetry of the decoupling limit of massive gravity, a study of the possible shapes of graviton non-gaussianities during inflation, classification results of supersymmetric partially massless fields, and the development of the geometric bootstrap, a novel method to generate new mathematical results about the spectrum of various Laplacian operators on closed Einstein manifolds.
