Aqueous Processed All-Polymer Solar Cells with High Open-Circuit Voltage Based on Low-Cost Thiophene–Quinoxaline Polymers

Eco-friendly solution processing and the low-cost synthesis of photoactive materials are important requirements for the commercialization of organic solar cells (OSCs). Although varieties of aqueous-soluble acceptors have been developed, the availability of aqueous-processable polymer donors remains quite limited. In particular, the generally shallow highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy levels of existing polymer donors limit further increases in the power conversion efficiency (PCE). Here, we design and synthesize two water/alcohol-processable polymer donors, poly[(thiophene-2,5-diyl)-alt-(2-((13-(2,5,8,11-tetraoxadodecyl)-2,5,8,11-tetraoxatetradecan-14-yl)oxy)-6,7-difluoroquinoxaline-5,8-diyl)] (P(Qx8O-T)) and poly[(selenophene-2,5-diyl)-alt-(2-((13-(2,5,8,11-tetraoxadodecyl)-2,5,8,11-tetraoxatetradecan-14-yl)oxy)-6,7-difluoroquinoxaline-5,8-diyl)] (P(Qx8O-Se)) with oligo(ethylene glycol) (OEG) side chains, having deep HOMO energy levels (~–5.4 eV). The synthesis of the polymers is achieved in a few synthetic and purification steps at reduced cost. The theoretical calculations uncover that the dielectric environmental variations are responsible for the observed band gap lowering in OEG-based polymers compared to their alkylated counterparts. Notably, the aqueous-processed all-polymer solar cells (aq-APSCs) based on P(Qx8O-T) and poly[(N,N'-bis(3-(2-(2-(2-methoxyethoxy)-ethoxy)ethoxy)-2-((2-(2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethoxy)ethoxy)-methyl)propyl)naphthalene-1,4,5,8-bis(dicarboximide)-2,6-diyl)-alt-(2,5-thiophene)] (P(NDIDEG-T)) active layer exhibit a PCE of 2.27% and high open-circuit voltage (V OC ) approaching 0.8 V, which are among the highest values for aq-APSCs reported to date. This study provides important clues for the design of low-cost, aqueous-processable polymer donors and the fabrication of aqueous-processable OSCs with high V OC .

Exploiting Saturation Regimes and Surface Effects to Tune Composite Design: Single Platelet Nanocomposites of Peptoid Nanosheets and CaCO 3

Mineral-polymer composites found in nature exhibit exceptional structural properties essential to their function, and transferring these attributes to the synthetic design of functional materials holds promise across various sectors. Biomimetic fabrication of nanocomposites introduces new pathways for advanced material design and explores biomineralization strategies. This study presents a novel approach for producing single platelet nanocomposites composed of CaCO 3 and biomimetic peptoid (N-substituted glycines) polymers, akin to the bricks found in the brick-and-mortar structure of nacre, the inner layer of certain mollusc shells. The significant aspect of the proposed strategy is the use of organic peptoid nanosheets as the scaffolds for brick formation, along with their controlled mineralization in solution. Here, we employ the B28 peptoid nanosheet as a scaffold, which readily forms free-floating zwitterionic bilayers in aqueous solution. The peptoid nanosheets were mineralized under consistent initial conditions (σ calcite = 1.2, pH 9.00), with variations in mixing conditions and supersaturation profiles over time aimed at controlling the final product. Nanosheets were mineralized in both feedback control experiments, where supersaturation was continuously replenished by titrant addition and in batch experiments without a feedback loop. Complete coverage of the nanosheet surface by amorphous calcium carbonate was achieved under specific conditions with feedback control mineralization, whereas vaterite was the primary CaCO 3 phase observed after batch experiments. Thermodynamic calculations suggest that time-dependent supersaturation profiles as well as the spatial distribution of supersaturation are effective controls for tuning the mineralization extent and product. We anticipate that the control strategies outlined in this work can serve as a foundation for the advanced and scalable fabrication of nanocomposites as building blocks for nacre-mimetic and functional materials.

Organo-catalyzed deamination of polystyrene sulfonamide for diverse post-polymerization modification of styrenic polymers

Post-polymerization modification allows for the incorporation of functional groups that would otherwise be incompatible with polymerization conditions, enhancing synthetic efficiency and facilitating the creation of complex polymer architectures for specialized applications, such as biomedical devices, electronics, and advanced coatings. Herein, we report a method inspired by late-stage functionalization of small molecules for the post-polymerization modification of aromatic polymers, specifically polystyrene (PS), under mild reaction conditions. First, PS was converted to polystyrene sulfonamide (PSSNH 2 ) with an 85% yield using established procedures. PSSNH 2 was subsequently transformed into a reactive sulfinate by deamination using an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) catalyst and benzaldehyde. The catalytic process was optimized by varying catalysts, solvents, bases, temperatures, and reaction times. The highest degree of deamination was 88% with a bicyclic NHC and K 2 CO 3 base in DMSO for 18 hours at 120 °C. The reactive sulfinate was then treated with various functional reagents, resulting in a library of aromatic polymers with different substituents with high degrees of functionalization ranging from 74% to 98%. Similarly, we modified expanded PS waste with trifluorobutyl iodide with a degree of functionalization of 72%, highlighting a new avenue for plastic upgrading. This approach could be used to rapidly generate functionalized polymers from PS with potential applications, including antibacterial properties and flame retardancy.

Green chemistry design in polymers derived from lignin: review and perspective

The use of lignin for material and chemical applications has gained interest in recent times due to the environmental focus on using biomass for renewable materials as well as the motivation to valorize lignin as part of an integrated biorefinery. While a wealth of publications can be found for lignin-derived materials, and several reviews can be found on the topic, there are no reviews that outline and critically assess the sustainability of these protocols based on the criterion of the 12 Principles of Green Chemistry. This review assesses the literature for lignin- derived polymers over the past 20 years and highlights attempts to use biobased accompanying reagents, green solvents or solvent-less protocols, reports that replace traditionally toxic precursors (e.g. diisocyanates for polyurethanes), use mild conditions, valorize additional waste streams and prepare materials particularly biodegradable or recyclable. Here, the following work is a comprehensive and critical assessment of the green and sustainable nature of the state-of-the art of lignin-derived polymers (polyurethane, polyester, epoxy, phenolic resin, and others) utilizing actual biomass in the synthetic protocol. Each section of this review highlights and assesses published protocols that use a particularly green approach in one or more steps of the synthetic sequence. While many reports still contain traditional petroleum-derived and toxic methods along with more sustainable methods, the outline of all such green methods is able to create a landscape amidst lignin-derived polymer synthesis that points the way toward safer and more environmentally friendly materials.

Direct ladderization of cyclooctatetraene-containing, processable conjugated ladder polymers from annulated bis-zirconacyclopentadienes

Conjugated ladder polymers (CLPs) are difficult yet captivating synthetic targets due to their fully unsaturated fused backbones. Inherent challenges associated with their synthesis often lead to low yields, structural defects, and insoluble products. Here a new method to form CLPs is demonstrated, utilizing a high-yielding dimerization of annulated zirconacyclopentadienes to form cyclooctatetraene (COT) monomer units. The resulting COT-containing polymers form rapidly in a single ladderization step from the bis-zirconacyclopentadiene precursors and display M n up to 29.7 kg mol -1 . The polymers represent rare examples of CLPs with negatively curved rings, resulting in the observation of unusual properties. The rigid tub-shaped COT units embedded in the backbone imbue the polymers with microporosity, exhibiting BET surface areas up to 555 m 2 g -1 . Additionally, the remarkable solubility of these CLPs in organic solvents enables the fabrication of thin films showcasing high dielectric performance with a discharged energy density as high as 6.54 J cm -3 at 650 MV m -1 .

Sulfur Conversion to Donor‐Acceptor Ladder Polymer Networks through Mechanochemical Nucleophilic Aromatic Substitution for Efficient CO 2 Photoreduction

The development of synthetic methods capable of converting elemental sulfur into conjugated porous sulfur‐rich polymers remains a great challenge, although direct utilization of this readily available feedstock can significantly enrich its uses and circumvent environmental problems during sulfur storage. Here, we report herein mechanochemical (MC) nucleophilic aromatic substitution (S N Ar) that enables sulfur conversion into thianthrene‐bridged porous ladder polymer networks with dense donor‐acceptor (D−A) molecular junctions. We demonstrate that the key lies in the generation of bent thianthrene units through a solid‐state ball‐milling condensation reaction between 1,2‐dihaloarenes and elemental sulfur. We also show that the assembling of D−A structural motifs into porous networks affords efficient visible‐light‐driven photocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) with water (H 2 O) vapor, in the absence of any additional photosensitizer, sacrificial agents or cocatalysts. Exceptional photoinduced charge separation along with boosted exciton dissociation results in a high‐performance of carbon monoxide (CO) production rate of 306.1 μmol g −1 h −1 with near 100 % CO selectivity, which is accompanied by H 2 O oxidation to O 2 , as confirmed by both experimental and theoretical results. We anticipate this novel MC S N Ar approach will advance processing techniques for direct sulfur utilization and facilitate new possibilities for the synthesis of D−A ladder polymer networks with promising potential in photocatalysis.

Measuring Topological Constraint Relaxation in Ring-Linear Polymer Blends

Polymers are an effective test bed for studying topological constraints in condensed matter due to a wide array of synthetically available chain topologies. When linear and ring polymers are blended together, emergent rheological properties are observed as the blend can be more viscous than either of the individual components. This emergent behavior arises since ring-linear blends can form long-lived topological constraints as the linear polymers thread the ring polymers. Here, in this work, we demonstrate how the Gauss linking integral can be used to efficiently evaluate the relaxation of topological constraints in ring-linear polymer blends. For majority-linear blends, the relaxation rate of topological constraints depends primarily on reptation of the linear polymers, resulting in the diffusive time τ d,R for rings of length N R blended with linear chains of length N l to scale as τ d,R ~ N$^2_R$N$^{3.4}_L$.

A universal and facile approach for building multifunctional conjugated polymers for human-integrated electronics

Polymer semiconductors have shown distinct promise for the development of human- integrated electronics, owing to their solution processability and mechanical softness. However, numerous functional properties required for this application domain face synthetic challenges to be imparted onto conjugated polymers and thus combined with efficient charge- transport property. Here, we develop a “click-to-polymer” (CLIP) synthesis strategy for conjugated polymers, which uses a click reaction for the facile and versatile attachment of diverse types of functional units to a pre-synthesized conjugated-polymer precursor. With four types of functional groups, we show that functionalized polymers from this CLIP method can still retain good charge-carrier mobility. Here, we take two realized polymers to showcase the photo-patternable property and biochemical sensing function, both of which advance the state of the art of realizing these two types of functions on conjugated polymers. We expect the expanded use of this synthesis approach can largely enrich the functional properties from conjugated polymers.

Light-Mediated Synthesis and Reprocessing of Dynamic Bottlebrush Elastomers under Ambient Conditions

We introduce a novel grafting-through polymerization strategy to synthesize dynamic bottlebrush polymers and elastomers in one step using light to construct a disulfide-containing backbone. The key starting material—α-lipoic acid (LA)—is commercially available, inexpensive, and biocompatible. When installed on the chain end(s) of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), the cyclic disulfide unit derived from LA polymerizes under ultraviolet (UV) light in ambient conditions. Significantly, no additives such as initiator, solvent, or catalyst are required for efficient gelation. Formulations that include bis-LA-functionalized cross-linker yield bottlebrush elastomers with high gel fractions (83–98%) and tunable, supersoft shear moduli in the ~20–200 kPa range. An added advantage of these materials is the dynamic disulfide bonds along each bottlebrush backbone, which allow for light-mediated self-healing and on-demand chemical degradation. These results highlight the potential of simple and scalable synthetic routes to generate unique bottlebrush polymers and elastomers based on PDMS.

Single-Ion Conducting Polymer Electrolyte Enabled via Aza-Michael Addition

Single-ion conducting polymer electrolytes present a possible route for achieving high energy density next-generation batteries due to their flexible nature and high cation transport number. The trifluoromethanesulfonimide (TFSI) functional group represents one of the most efficient tethered anions for Li-ion conductivity. However, the covalent attachment of TFSI groups into polymer electrolytes has been challenging and costly due to its synthetic difficulty and limited commercial availability of building blocks. Here, we present a new polymer electrolyte synthesized by the Michael addition reaction between poly(allylamine) (PAA) and a vinyl TFSI anion under mild reaction conditions. The resulting PAATFSI exhibits a lower glass transition temperature and several orders of magnitude higher Li-ion conductivity than similar TFSI-based single-ion conducting homopolymers in the dry state. Moreover, PAATFSI exhibits excellent Li-ion conductivity (2.7 × 10 –4 S/cm at 30 °C) with the addition of a plasticizer (60 wt % of carbonate solvent), which enables stable lithium–metal battery performance. In conclusion, this study demonstrates a facile route for the synthesis of new single-ion conducting polymer electrolytes that opens a library of possibilities to enable the realization of polymer-based batteries.

The Role of Side Chains and Hydration on Mixed Charge Transport in n ‐Type Polymer Films

Abstract Introducing ethylene glycol (EG) side chains to a conjugated polymer backbone is a well‐established synthetic strategy for designing organic mixed ion‐electron conductors (OMIECs). However, the impact that film swelling has on mixed conduction properties has yet to be scoped, particularly for electron‐transporting (n‐type) OMIECs. Here, the authors investigate the effect of the length of branched EG chains on mixed charge transport ofn‐type OMIECs based on a naphthalene‐1,4,5,8‐tetracarboxylic‐diimide‐bithiophene backbone. Atomic force microscopy (AFM), grazing‐incidence wide‐angle X‐ray scattering (GIWAXS), and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) are used to establish the similarities between the common‐backbone films in dry conditions. Electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (EQCM‐D) and in situ GIWAXS measurements reveal stark changes in film swelling properties and microstructure during electrochemical doping, depending on the side chain length. It is found that even in the loss of the crystallite content upon contact with the aqueous electrolyte, the films can effectively transport charges and that it is rather the high water content that harms the electronic interconnectivity within the OMIEC films. These results highlight the importance of controlling water uptake in the films to impede charge transport inn‐type electrochemical devices.

3,4‐Dicyanothiophene—a Versatile Building Block for Efficient Nonfullerene Polymer Solar Cells

Abstract In this contribution, a versatile building block, 3,4‐dicyanothiophene (DCT), which possesses structural simplicity and synthetic accessibility for constructing high‐performance, low‐cost, wide‐bandgap conjugated polymers for use as donors in polymer solar cells (PSCs), is reported. A prototype polymer, PB3TCN‐C66, and its cyano‐free analogue polymer PB3T‐C66, are synthesized to evaluate the potential of using DCT in nonfullerene PSCs. A stronger aggregation property in solution, higher thermal transition temperatures with higher enthalpies, a larger dipole moment, higher relative dielectric constant, and more linear conformation are exhibited by PB3TCN‐C66. Solar cells employing IT‐4F as the electron acceptor offer power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 11.2% and 2.3% for PB3TCN‐C66 and PB3T‐C66, respectively. Morphological characterizations reveal that the PB3TCN‐C66:IT‐4F blend exhibits better π–π paracrystallinity, a contracted domain size, and higher phase purity, consistent with its higher molecular interaction parameter, derived from thermodynamic calculations. Moreover, PB3TCN‐C66 offers a higher open‐circuit voltage and reduced energy loss than most state‐of‐the‐art wide‐bandgap polymers, without the need of additional electron‐withdrawing substituents. Two additional polymers derived from DCT also demonstrate promising performance with a higher PCE of 13.4% being achieved. Thus, DCT represents a versatile and promising building block for constructing high‐performance, low‐cost, conjugated polymers for application in PSCs.
