Metamorphic Tunnel Junctions Grown Via MOCVD Designed for GaAs 0.75 P 0.25 /Si Tandem Solar Cells

A high-performance metamorphic Al 0.2 Ga 0.8 As 0.75 P 0.25 /GaAs 0.75 P 0.25 heterojunction tunnel junction structure was developed for application to monolithic epitaxial GaAs 0.75 P 0.25 /Si 1.7 eV/1.1 eV bandgap tandem solar cells produced via metal-organic chemical vapor deposition. Doping optimization focused on both bulk doping concentrations and mitigating the transient incorporation effects that otherwise causes non-abrupt doping profiles in the Te doped layer. Furthermore, these efforts resulted in a fully-relaxed metamorphic tunnel diode at the target lattice constant having a peak tunneling current density (JP) of 279.1 A·cm –2 and a zero-bias resistance area product (RA) of 3.0×10 –4 Ω·cm 2 . After post-growth annealing to emulate the thermal load of the GaAs 0.75 P 0.25 top cell growth and elimination of the performance enhancing carbon activation anneal, the device achieved JP = 13.1 A·cm –2 and RA = 1.5×10 –3 Ω·cm 2 . These worst-case values are very promising as they enable the operation of GaAs 0.75 P 0.25 /Si tandems under one-sun AM1.5G illumination with negligible series resistance and at AM1.5D concentrations up to 240 suns with only 0.1% absolute efficiency loss.

Voltage-Matched Strings using 3-Terminal Tandems: Fundamentals and End Losses

Strings constructed from 3-terminal tandem (3TT) cells can provide some of the performance benefits of voltage-matching with less cell complexity than strings based on 4-terminal tandem cells. However, the circuitry for a 3TT string can become more complex, making circuit analysis more challenging. Here we illustrate the essential features of single-polarity voltage-matched (VM) 3TT strings using representative examples. End losses are intrinsic to this type of string, but can be reduced by minimizing m and n in the Vtop/Vbot VM ratio m/n, and further mitigated by increasing the string length. This analysis agrees with preliminary experimental results.

A tandem radiative/evaporative cooler for weather-insensitive and high-performance daytime passive cooling

Radiative cooling and evaporative cooling with low carbon footprint are regarded as promising passive cooling strategies. However, the intrinsic limits of continuous water supply with complex systems for evaporative cooling, and restricted cooling power as well as the strict requirement of weather conditions for radiative cooling, hinder the scale of their practical applications. Here, we propose a tandem passive cooler composed of bilayer polymer that enables dual-functional passive cooling of radiation and evaporation. Specifically, the high reflectivity to sunlight and mid-infrared emissivity of this polymer film allows excellent radiative cooling performance, and its good atmospheric water harvesting property of underlayer ensures self-supply of water and high evaporative cooling power. Consequently, this tandem passive cooler overcomes the fundamental difficulties of radiative cooling and evaporative cooling and shows the applicability under various conditions of weather/climate. It is expected that this design can expand the practical application domain of passive cooling.

Comparative Life Cycle Analysis of Scalable Single-Junction and Tandem Perovskite Solar Cell (PSC) Systems

Efficient, low-cost solar cells based upon perovskites have the potential to transform the US and global energy portfolio and improve energy security if they can be manufactured in an environmentally sustainable manner. However, previous life cycle analyses (LCA) of perovskite solar cells (PSC) used lab recipes to project the environmental impact of industrial PSC production – using materials and processes that may not be representative of industrial productions due to high material waste and complex synthesis – and such studies were limited to a few single-junction technologies. Thus, the goal of this project was threefold: a) to review the most promising for industrial production single-junction and tandem PSC technologies, b) to build life-cycle materials inventories that reflect scalable production of these technologies, and c) to conduct comprehensive life-cycle analysis of these technologies and compare their environmental impact with those of established commercial technologies. In response, this project identified challenges for fabrication transitioning from laboratory to sustainable industrial production, developed life-cycle inventory (LCI) data for scaling to industrial production four promising single-junction and three tandem PSC systems and produced life-cycle-investigations using, as metrics, a complete spectrum of energy, environmental and ecological impact indicators. Special focus was given to the use of lead, silver and indium in PSC. The project used the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology as standardized by the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC), ISO standards 14040 and 14044, and the International Energy Agency PVPS Task 12 LCA guidelines. LCA allows the calculation of a number of energy and environmental and impact categories, including energy cumulative energy demand (CED), global warming potential (GWP), human toxicity potential (HTP), eco-toxicity potential (ETP), abiotic resource depletion potential (ADP), acidification potential (AP), ozone depletion potential (ODP), photochemical oxidation potential (POP), eutrophication potential (EP). In addition to those, we calculated the Energy Pay-Back Time (EPBT) and the Energy Return On Investment (EROI). We provide LCA impacts for complete perovskite PV systems – including balance of system components – installed at three irradiation levels and considering reference and future potential module efficiencies. Finally, a sensitivity analysis on perovskite lifetime has been performed, considering 10, 20 and 30 years. Contribution analysis of the impacts of each material and layer of PSC shows, that the use of Pb in metalorganic PSC does not result in significant environmental impacts as the major contributions to environmental indicators arise from the use of Ag and encapsulation materials. Solution-based PSC manufacturing was found to be less impactful to the environment than vapor-based fabrication, and roll-to-roll (RtR) printing uses less energy and generates the lowest emissions. PSC produced with RtR manufacturing could reach the same Energy Return on Energy Investment (EROI) as that of crystalline-Si PV within 12 years of life, whereas the most energy demanding spray coating on rigid substrates, would require a 20-yr life to match the EROI of 30-yr lasting silicon PV. This work lays the foundation for sustainability investigations in a comparative context of large-scale production and deployment of PSC. The results of this project have the potential to have a significant impact on the future of PV manufacturing, by providing industry, policy-makers, and academia with insights necessary to choose which, if any, lead-based solar cell life cycles are environmentally sustainable.

HydroGEN Seedling: Monolithically Integrated Thin Film/Silicon Tandem Photoelectrodes for High-Efficiency and Stable Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

In this project, we propose to develop monolithically integrated Si-based tandem photoelectrodes to achieve both high solar-to-hydrogen (STH) efficiency (>15%) and long-term stability (>1,000 hours) in spontaneous water splitting systems. The proposed tandem devices consist of a Ta 3 N 5 , BCTSSe, or In 0.5 Ga 0.5 N top junction, which has a bandgap of ~1.7-2.0 eV and can split the solar spectrum with the Si bottom junction. Ta 3 N 5 , BCTSSe, and InGaN will be grown/deposited on a low-resistivity nanowire tunnel junction on Si substrates using atomic layer deposition (ALD), sputtering, and molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), respectively. Both n and p-type Si solar wafers will be utilized, which can serve as the photoanode or photocathode, respectively. We will use N-rich GaN ultrathin passivation layers to protect photoelectrodes from corrosion and oxidation.

Resin Assisted Capture Coupled with Isobaric Tandem Mass Tag Labeling for Multiplexed Quantification of Protein Thiol Oxidation

Reversible oxidative modifications on protein thiols have recently emerged as important mediators of cellular function. Herein we describe the detailed procedure of a quantitative redox proteomics method that utilizes resin-assisted capture (RAC) in combination with tandem mass tag (TMT) isobaric labeling and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) to allow multiplexed stochiometric quantification of oxidized protein thiols at the proteome level. The site-specific quantitative information on oxidized cysteine residues provides additional insight into the functional impacts of such modifications. The workflow is adaptable across many sample types including cultured cells (e.g. mammalian, prokaryotic) and whole tissues (e.g. heart, lung, muscle) which are initially lysed/homogenized with free thiols being alkylated to prevent artificial oxidation. The oxidized protein thiols are then reduced and captured by a thiol affinity resin which streamlines and simplifies the workflow steps by allowing the proceeding digestion, labeling, and washing procedures to be performed without additional transfer of proteins/peptides. Finally, labeled peptides are eluted and analyzed by LC-MS/MS to reveal comprehensive stoichiometric changes related to thiol oxidation across the entire proteome. This method greatly improves our understanding of the role of redox dependent regulation under physiological and pathophysiological states related to protein thiol oxidation.

Experimental Evaluation of a High-Performance Cold-Climate Heat Pump Using Tandem Vapor-Injection Compressors

A high-performance cold-climate heat pump (CCHP) was developed and experimentally validated through comprehensive laboratory and field testing. The system utilized two equal-size tandem vapor-injection (VI) compressors with an inter-stage flash tank to improve efficiency and capacity retention under subfreezing conditions. Laboratory testing was conducted on a 3-ton prototype in a controlled environmental chamber equipped with calibrated thermocouples, refrigerant-side mass flow and pressure transducers, and precision airflow measurement for energy balance verification. The prototype achieved heating coefficients of performance (COPs) of 4.4 at 47 °F, 3.1 at 17 °F, and 2.0 at –13 °F, while maintaining 88% of its rated heating capacity at –13°F. These results confirm strong low-temperature performance and indicate the potential for significant reductions in electric resistance backup use. A field prototype was installed and monitored in a residential building in Fairbanks, Alaska, during a heating season. Instrumentation included real-time power, temperature, and refrigerant state measurements to evaluate performance under dynamic outdoor conditions. The heat pump operated reliably down to –30 °F, delivering 75% of its rated heating capacity with a COP of 1.8, while maintaining stable operation, effective defrost control, and indoor comfort without auxiliary heating. The combined laboratory and field results demonstrate that the tandem VI compressor configuration provides a practical and energy-efficient approach for residential heat pumps designed for cold and very cold climate regions.

Gradient Doping in Sn–Pb Perovskites by Barium Ions for Efficient Single-Junction and Tandem Solar Cells

Narrow bandgap tin-lead (NBG Sn-Pb) perovskites generally have a high density of unintentional p-type self-doping, which reduces the charge carrier lifetimes, diffusion lengths and device efficiencies. Here, we demonstrate a p-n homojunction across the Sn-Pb perovskite resulted from a gradient doping by Ba 2+ . We report that 0.1 mol% Ba 2+ can effectively compensate the p-doping of Sn-Pb perovskites or even turns it to n-type without changing its bandgap. Ba 2+ cations are found to stay at the interstitial sites and work as shallow electron donor. In addition, Ba 2+ cations show a unique heterogeneous distribution in perovskite film. Most of the barium ions stay in the top 600 nanometer region of the perovskite films and turn it into weakly n-type, while the bottom portion of the film remains to be p-type. The gradient doping forms of a homojunction from top to bottom of the perovskite films with a built-in field that facilitates extraction of photogenerated carriers, resulting an increased carrier extraction length. Furthermore, this strategy enhanced the efficiency of Sn-Pb perovskite single-junction solar cells to over 21.0% and boosted the efficiencies of monolithic perovskite-perovskite tandem solar cells to 25.3% and 24.1%, for active areas of 5.9 mm2 and 0.94 cm 2 , respectively.

Inverse Design of Photonic Surfaces via High throughput Femtosecond Laser Processing and Tandem Neural Networks

Abstract This work demonstrates a method to design photonic surfaces by combining femtosecond laser processing with the inverse design capabilities of tandem neural networks that directly link laser fabrication parameters to their resulting textured substrate optical properties. High throughput fabrication and characterization platforms are developed that generate a dataset comprising 35280 unique microtextured surfaces on stainless steel with corresponding measured spectral emissivities. The trained model utilizes the nonlinear one‐to‐many mapping between spectral emissivity and laser parameters. Consequently, it generates predominantly novel designs, which reproduce the full range of spectral emissivities (average root‐mean‐squared‐error < 2.5%) using only a compact region of laser parameter space 25 times smaller than what is represented in the training data. Finally, the inverse design model is experimentally validated on a thermophotovoltaic emitter design application. By synergizing laser‐matter interactions with neural network capabilities, the approach offers insights into accelerating the discovery of photonic surfaces, advancing energy harvesting technologies.

Co‐Electrolysis of CO 2 and H 2 O to Syngas on Bimetallic Pd x Cu 1‐ x Catalysts for Tandem Thermochemical Conversion to Carbon Nanofibers

Electrification of chemical production using renewable energy and abundant feedstocks offers a promising pathway for decarbonizing the chemical industry. Current efforts on CO 2 valorization largely focus on making chemicals and fuels. Here, to help achieve net-negative emissions through long-term carbon storage, this study aims to develop efficient electrocatalysts for a tandem electrochemical-thermochemical process to convert CO 2 into carbon nanofibers (CNFs). CO 2 and water are first electrochemically reduced in a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) electrolyzer to produce syngas (CO + H 2 ), which is subsequently fed into a thermochemical packed bed reactor to facilitate CNF growth. This work systematically evaluated Pd x Cu 1-x bimetallic electrocatalysts to assess the effect of Pd–Cu alloying on enhancing syngas production while reducing Pd loading. Transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy confirmed the formation of high-purity, crystalline CNFs, regardless of the syngas composition from the MEA. In situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction measurements revealed that increasing Cu content in the Pd x Cu 1-x alloy progressively inhibited palladium hydride formation, consistent with DFT calculations on the stability of Pd x Cu 1-x under reducing electrochemical potentials.

Selective Valorization of CO 2 towards Valuable Hydrocarbons through Methanol-mediated Tandem Catalysis

The thermocatalytic conversion of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) into valuable hydrocarbons presents a promising solution for mitigating anthropogenic CO 2 emissions while producing drop-in replacements for fossil-derived products. Among the two tandem mechanisms for the direct hydrogenation of CO 2 , the methanol synthesis coupled with the methanol to hydrocarbon (MTH) reaction offers an improvement over the reverse water-gas shift coupled with Fischer-Tropsch synthesis reaction (RWGS-FTS), as it is not limited by Anderson-Schulz-Flory distribution and yields higher selectivity towards specific products (e.g., olefins, aromatics, higher hydrocarbons). Herein, we focus on the recent progress achieved through this pathway and outline the existing knowledge gaps. We discuss the challenges involved in the process and highlight the key descriptors in the selection of catalyst components. Finally, we present several potential solutions to circumvent the current challenges, aiming to expedite the advancement of this route toward an efficient CO 2 hydrogenation process.

Life cycle energy demand and carbon emissions of scalable single-junction and tandem perovskite PV

Perovskite photovoltaics reached record efficiencies in the laboratory and, if sustainably commercialized, they would accelerate a green energy transition. Here, this article presents the development of life-cycle inventory material and energy databases of most promising four single-junction and three tandem scalable perovskite systems with assumptions regarding scalable production validated by industry experts. We conducted comprehensive “ex ante” Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) and Net Energy Analysis, analyzing their cumulative energy demand, global warming potential profiles, energy payback times and energy return on investment (EROI). LCA contribution analysis elucidates the most impactful material and process choices. It shows that solution-based perovskite manufacturing would have lower environmental impact than vapor-based methods, and that roll-to-roll (RtR) printing offers the lowest impact. Among material choices, MoOx/Al has lower impact than Ag, and fluorine-tin-oxide lower than indium-tin-oxide. Furthermore, we compare perovskites with commercial crystalline-silicon and thin-film PV, accounting for the most recent developments in crystalline-Si wafer production and differences in life expectancies and efficiencies. It is shown that perovskite systems produced with RtR manufacturing could reach in only 12 years of life the same EROI as that of single-crystalline-Si PV lasting 30-years. This work lays a foundation for sustainability investigations of perovskite large-scale deployment.

Wide-Gap Perovskite via Synergetic Surface Passivation and Its Application toward Efficient Stacked Tandem Photovoltaics

Superior bandgap tunability enables solution-processed halide perovskite a promising candidate for multi-junction photovoltaics (PVs). Particularly, optically coupling wide-gap perovskite by stacking with commercially available PVs such as silicon and CIGS (also known as 4-terminal tandem) simplifies the technology transfer process, and further advances the commercialization potential of perovskite technology. However, compared with matured PV materials and the phase-pure FAPbI 3 , wide-gap perovskite still suffers from huge voltage deficits. Here, the authors take advantage of the synergetic effect behind a sequential fluoride and organic ammonium salt surface passivation strategy to control non-radiative energy losses, and obtained a 17.7% efficiency in infrared-transparent wide-gap perovskite solar cells (21.1% for opaque device), and achieved efficiencies of over 25% when stacked with commercial Si and CIGS products with original PCEs of 18–20% under a 4-terminal working condition.

Polyethylene upcycling to fuels: Narrowing the carbon number distribution in n-alkanes by tandem hydropyrolysis/hydrocracking

The extensive use of plastics in modern life has resulted in a global waste crisis to the environment. Polyethylene (PE) is one of the most popular and hardest plastics to recycle because of its strong C(sp 3 )-C(sp 3 ) bonds. In this study, a tandem conversion process, i.e., hydropyrolysis and subsequent vapor-phase hydrocracking of primary intermediates (C n>5 alkenes and long-chain alkanes), was conducted via a two-step pressurized flow-through fixed-bed reactor over a CoAl 2 O 4 spinel-derived catalyst. The product distribution could be flexibly tuned by regulating operating parameters in the cascade fixed-bed reactor and Co/Al molar ratio in CoAl 2 O 4 spinel catalysts. Under optimal reaction conditions (0.2 MPa H 2 , 550 °C for hydropyrolysis in the 1st reactor, 300–325 °C for hydrocracking in the 2nd reactor, 20 s -1 of gas hourly space velocity), the maximum single-pass yields of gasoline (C 5 -C 12 ) and jet-fuel (C 8 -C 16 ) range n-alkanes reached 86.0 wt% and 68.1 wt%, respectively. The CoAl 2 O 4 spinel catalysts also gained high activity in degrading realistic post-consumer plastics such as linear low-, low-, and high-density PE, and a ~ 73.1 wt% gasoline yield and a ~ 54.7 wt% C 8 -C 16 yield were retained even after 3 cycles in-situ regeneration of deactivated CoAl 2 O 4 catalysts. This work provides an efficient and tunable approach to upcycle PE wastes into liquid fuels with an ideal carbon length.

Tandem pyrolysis evolved gas–gas chromatography–mass spectrometry

Analysis of byproducts from thermal degradation of polymer materials provides a wealth of information about a materials’ composition, thermal stability, degradation mechanisms, and kinetics. However, regardless of the instrumentation used, only limited information is obtainable from a single experiment. Microfurnace technology, when interfaced to a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), can be used to obtain both thermal and chemical information via evolved gas analysis-MS (EGA-MS) and GC-MS analysis modes. While both EGA-MS and Py-GC-MS are valuable when characterizing polymer materials, at least two experiments on distinct samples are required, which can be a liability for clear interpretation of results from inhomogeneous samples. Here, we seek to overcome this limitation by combining EGA-MS and Py-GC-MS modes in a single experimental setup. Further, this was done by developing new gas line modifications to allow for tandem Pyrolysis Evolved Gas-Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (Py/EG-GC-MS) analysis. Verification of Py/EG-GC-MS analysis was performed using a polystyrene standard. Results demonstrate successful Py/EG-GC-MS analysis for the first-time showing the potential of these modifications for application in areas where sample is limited or direct correlation of products to the thermal profile is desirable such as in forensics or product-specific kinetics.
