Baseline vs. DER Scenario

Projections and associated uncertainty estimates are generated for a variety of user-selectable EV charging sessions, electricity tariffs, subsidy levels, revenue schemes, charging station configurations, and on-site solar and/or storage options. The outputs are presented in CHIP's web portal browser in the form of easily interpretable graphics (interactive graphs and bar charts) that facilitate convenient comparison among different scenarios to aid decision-making. The user should bring assumptions for modeling on simulation planning horizon, number of EV charging sessions per year, electricity costs (energy and demand charge rates; flat versus time-of-use rate), site capital costs (equipment for EV chargers and transformer), solar PV, and battery energy storage (kW).

Track vs Shower Discrimination in the Event Reconstruction of the ICARUS Experiment

The ICARUS collaboration has employed the 760-ton T600 liquid argon TPC detector in a successful three-year physics run at the underground LNGS laboratory, performing a sensitive search for LSND-like anomalous appearance in the CERN Neutrino to Gran Sasso beam, which contributed to the constraints on the allowed neutrino oscillation parameters to a narrow region around 1 eV. After a significant overhaul at CERN, the T600 detector has been installed at Fermilab. The detector commissioning phase lasted until June 2022, then ICARUS moved to data taking for neutrino oscillation physics collecting events from the Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB) and the Neutrinos at the Main Injector (NuMI) beam off-axis. The initial experiment goals are to either confirm or refute the claim by Neutrino-4 short-baseline reactor experiment, perform measurements of neutrino cross sections with the NuMI beam and several Beyond Standard Model searches. Then, ICARUS will jointly search for evidence of sterile neutrinos with the Short-Baseline Near Detector (SBND). In this contribution, we discuss recent changes to the standard TPC event reconstruction that uses Pandora, a pattern recognition software common to liquid argon-based detectors. In particular, we performed a new training of the Boosted Decision Tree (BDT) employed to separate track-like and shower-like reconstructed particles using Monte Carlo simulations of neutrino events from BNB in ICARUS. We compare the discrimination capabilities of the old and new BDT training and discuss further improvements of this algorithm.

Measured vs. Calculated Dose Rates During Ring Injection Dump Replacement

One of the most irradiated Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) accelerator components is the ring injection dump (RID), which is located downstream of the accumulator ring injection section. The unstripped and only partially stripped H - beam, about 5% of the full SNS beam current, is discarded in the injection into the accumulator ring and is redirected to the RID. According to the accelerator operation plan, the beam stop and the window assemblies of the existing RID are removed and replaced when they have reached their end-of-life owing to radiation exposure. This procedure, which includes multiple steps, took place during a facility maintenance period in March 2023. To support work planning and meet as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA) requirements during removal and exchange of the components, dose rates were calculated for each stage of the exchange operation. During each stage, dose rates were measured before and after work. This comparison shows that measured dose rates are within a factor of 2 of the predicted (calculated) dose rates.

Comparison of Projections for a Short-Term Release, CAP88 vs NARAC

The purpose of this study was to compare the projected dose using different plume models, evaluating a short duration release of tritium to the 16 compliance sectors and 4 additional points of interest using local meteorology. This report is written as guidance to the decision makers when reviewing this specific Gaussian plume model intended for radiological dose assessment and regulatory compliance, called CAP88 1 , as compared to a more-complex model designed for emergency response. The emergency response model, NARAC 2 , can be used to supplement the CAP88 compliance model evaluations, since NARAC is intended for use in situations where releases are shorter in duration and have increased complexity in terrain and meteorology.

Bill Savings vs. Backup Power: Evaluating operational tradeoffs for home solar+storage systems [Slides]

Adoption of residential solar photovoltaic+energy storage systems (PVESS) is driven by both bill savings opportunities and customer demand for backup power. Prior work by this team (Gorman et al., 2022; Gorman et al., 2023) explored PVESS backup power capabilities during long-duration power interruptions (e.g., due to severe weather events), when customers are assumed to be able to anticipate the event and charge their batteries in advance. In many cases, however, power interruptions are unpredictable (and often relatively short); for those types of events, a customer will typically set its battery to maintain some minimum capacity in reserve in case of an interruption, which reduces the capacity available for managing utility bills. This study evaluates this operational tradeoff to help customers and installers configure backup reserve settings, and to inform decision-making more generally about the customer value of backup power services compared to utility bill savings. This study utilizes Berkeley Lab’s PRESTO tool to produce stochastic simulations of (predominantly short-duration) power interruption events, and builds on an earlier case-study demonstrating PVESS backup performance during short-duration interruptions (Baik et al., 2023).

Bill Savings vs. Backup Power: Evaluating operational tradeoffs for home solar+storage systems [Slides]

This study explores tradeoffs between the use of home solar+storage systems for backup power versus day-to-day utility bill savings. The study focuses specifically on the “reserve setting” available with most home battery storage systems, which allow the customer to maintain some minimum level of storage in reserve in case of an unforeseen power interruption. The more capacity that is held in reserve, the greater the customer’s ability to ride-through possible power interruptions, but less capacity is then available to manage utility bills on a day-to-day basis. This study evaluates this operational tradeoff across a diverse set of locations and residential electricity tariff structures, relying on Berkeley Lab’s PRESTO model to stochastically simulate power interruption events, and exploring a range of sensitivities, including variations in customer value of lost load (VoLL), interruption frequency, and other key drivers. The results show that, in most circumstances, the opportunity cost of holding storage capacity in reserve, in terms of foregone bill saving, tends to outweigh any gains in reliability value associated with mitigated power interruptions. This finding is robust across tariff structures and across most of the sensitivities considered, including those related to rate level, customer load level, and storage sizing. There are a limited set of circumstances where raising the reserve setting improves the overall customer value (comprised of bill savings plus reliability value). Specifically, that exception occurs when all of the following conditions apply: (a) the customer resides in a location with exceptionally poor reliability, (b) the customer has exceptionally high VoLL; (c) the customer is on a net billing rate or on a TOU rate that allows grid discharging but not grid charging; and (d), depending on the location, the price arbitrage differential on that rate is relatively small. In all other circumstances analyzed, total customer value declines with reserve level.

Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) – Illinois Rare Earth Novel Extraction and Supply (IRENES) - Report on Technology Down Select No. 1 - Acid Baking vs. Heap Leaching

An essential step for recovering rare earth and critical minerals from coal mine waste is one that achieves adequate dissolution of the target elements into a pregnant leachate solution. The simplest technical approach was thought to be heap-leaching that could proceed using mild acid dosing or naturally generated acid from biological activity. For this reason, the University of Kentucky at Lexington (UKY) undertook two efforts to evaluate feasibility, including a laboratory column leaching evaluation and a pilot heap-leaching demonstration. Later, the UK evaluated a pyrometallurgical approach using roasting combined with acid baking and tank leaching at elevated temperatures to improve extraction efficiencies. This report surveys the previously reported leaching yields and calculates the gross value of rare earth oxides as a basket in the pregnant leachate solution.
