Adaptive ensemble simulations of biomolecules

Recent advances in both theory and computational power have created opportunities to simulate biomolecular processes more efficiently using adaptive ensemble simulations. Ensemble simulations are now widely used to compute a number of individual simulation trajectories and analyze statistics across them. Adaptive ensemble simulations offer a further level of sophistication and flexibility by enabling highlevel algorithms to control simulations-based on intermediate results. We review some of the adaptive ensemble algorithms and software infrastructure currently in use and outline where the complexities of implementing adaptive simulation have limited algorithmic innovation to date. In conclusion, we describe an adaptive ensemble API to overcome some of these barriers and more flexibly and simply express adaptive simulation algorithms to help realize the power of this type of simulation.

Hybrid model predictive control techniques for safety factor profile and stored energy regulation while incorporating NBI constraints

Abstract A novel hybrid Model Predictive Control (MPC) algorithm has been designed for simultaneous safety factor ( q ) profile and stored energy ( w ) control while incorporating the pulse-width-modulation constraints associated with the neutral beam injection (NBI) system. Regulation of the q -profile has been extensively shown to be a key factor for improved confinement as well as non-inductive sustainment of the plasma current. Simultaneous control of w is necessary to prevent the triggering of pressure-driven magnetohydrodynamic instabilities as the controller shapes the q profile. Conventional MPC schemes proposed for q -profile control have considered the NBI powers as continuous-time signals, ignoring the discrete-time nature of these actuators and leading in some cases to performance loss. The hybrid MPC scheme in this work has the capability of incorporating the discrete-time actuator dynamics as additional constraints. In nonlinear simulations, the proposed hybrid MPC scheme demonstrates improved q -profile+ w control performance for NSTX-U operating scenarios.

Byte select cache compression

Techniques are disclosed for designing cache compression algorithms that control how data in caches are compressed. The techniques generate a custom “byte select algorithm” by applying repeated transforms applied to an initial compression algorithm until a set of suitability criteria is met. The suitability criteria include that the “cost” is below a threshold and that a metadata constraint is met. The “cost” is the number of blocks that can be compressed by an algorithm as compared with the “ideal” algorithm. The metadata constraint is the number of bits required for metadata.

Kinematics of the six-degree-of-freedom force-reflecting Kraft Master

Presented here are kinematic equations for a six degree of freedom force-reflecting hand controller. The forward kinematics solution is developed and shown in simplified form. The Jacobian matrix, which uses terms from the forward kinematics solution, is derived. Both of these kinematic solutions require joint angle inputs. A calibration method is presented to determine the hand controller joint angles given the respective potentiometer readings. The kinematic relationship describing the mechanical coupling between the hand and controller shoulder and elbow joints is given. These kinematic equations may be used in an algorithm to control the hand controller as a telerobotic system component. The purpose of the hand controller is two-fold: operator commands to the telerobotic system are entered using the hand controller, and contact forces and moments from the task are reflected to the operator via the hand controller.

Control Oriented Modeling and Validation of Aeroservoelastic Systems

Lightweight aircraft design emphasizes the reduction of structural weight to maximize aircraft efficiency and agility at the cost of increasing the likelihood of structural dynamic instabilities. To ensure flight safety, extensive flight testing and active structural servo control strategies are required to explore and expand the boundary of the flight envelope. Aeroservoelastic (ASE) models can provide online flight monitoring of dynamic instabilities to reduce flight time testing and increase flight safety. The success of ASE models is determined by the ability to take into account varying flight conditions and the possibility to perform flight monitoring under the presence of active structural servo control strategies. In this continued study, these aspects are addressed by developing specific methodologies and algorithms for control relevant robust identification and model validation of aeroservoelastic structures. The closed-loop model robust identification and model validation are based on a fractional model approach where the model uncertainties are characterized in a closed-loop relevant way.

Stochastic Model Predictive Control for Demand Response in a Home Energy Management System

This paper presents a chance constrained, model predictive control (MPC) algorithm for demand response (DR) in a home energy management system (HEMS). The HEMS optimally schedules controllable appliances given user preferences such as thermal comfort and energy cost sensitivity, and available residentially-owned power sources such as photovoltaic (PV) generation and home battery systems. The proposed control architecture ensures both the DR event and indoor thermal comfort are satisfied with a high probability given the uncertainty in available PV generation and the outdoor temperature forecast. The uncertainties are incorporated into the MPC formulation using probabilistic constraints instead of computationally limiting sampling-based approaches. Simulation results for various user preferences and probabilistic model parameters show the effectiveness of the HEMS algorithm response to DR requests.

Computation of the fuel optimal degree of controllability

A new algorithm based on discretization is propposed which gives arbitrarily accurate results for fuel-optimal degree of controllability (DOC) as the discretization interval approaches zero. This research on DOC was motivated by the problem of optimizing the actuator locations in the control of large flexible spacecraft, but the concepts can also be applied to model reduction and as a measure of coupling between subsystems in hierarchical or decentralized control. The approach utilized is related closely to the time-optimal DOC algorithm; however, additional constraints must be applied, and a useful approach is found that avoids substantial increase in complexity. Algorithms are developed to calculate both the volume and the minimum distance to the boundary of the recovery region as the two choices of the controllability measure. Accurate methods for computation of both the time-optimal and fuel-optimal DOC for maneuver problems, are also described.

Control System of Multi-Port Autonomous Reconfigurable Solar Power Plant (MARS) & HIL Platforms for Design

Multi-port autonomous reconfigurable solar power plant (MARS) provides an attractive alternative to connect photovoltaic (PV) and energy storage systems (ESSs) to high-voltage direct current (HVdc) links and high-voltage alternating current (ac) grids. In this paper, a unique hierarchical control system of MARS is proposed and evaluated. To evaluate the control system and associated algorithms in early-stage research of complex architectures like MARS, it is important to develop unique suitable hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) platforms. In this paper, the HIL platforms for MARS to evaluate the performance of the hierarchical control system and the control algorithms implemented are presented. Further, they help with the design process of control systems. The real-time simulation models and algorithms that are utilized for MARS in the HIL platforms are also discussed in the paper. The HIL experiments of the control system of MARS showcase the capability to provide continuity of operation under faults and frequency support to the power grid during loss of generation. They also showcase the stability of the proposed hierarchical control system of MARS.

Applications of fuzzy logic to control and decision making

Long range space missions will require high operational efficiency as well as autonomy to enhance the effectivity of performance. Fuzzy logic technology has been shown to be powerful and robust in interpreting imprecise measurements and generating appropriate control decisions for many space operations. Several applications are underway, studying the fuzzy logic approach to solving control and decision making problems. Fuzzy logic algorithms for relative motion and attitude control have been developed and demonstrated for proximity operations. Based on this experience, motion control algorithms that include obstacle avoidance were developed for a Mars Rover prototype for maneuvering during the sample collection process. A concept of an intelligent sensor system that can identify objects and track them continuously and learn from its environment is under development to support traffic management and proximity operations around the Space Station Freedom. For safe and reliable operation of Lunar/Mars based crew quarters, high speed controllers with ability to combine imprecise measurements from several sensors is required. A fuzzy logic approach that uses high speed fuzzy hardware chips is being studied.

Robust PID Control Against Nonlinear Uncertainties in Modern Power Systems with Microgrids

This paper investigates the problem of robust PID control for nonlinear power systems with uncertainties. In this paper, we analyze the challenges posed by nonlinearities and uncertainties in power systems, as well as the limitations of traditional linearization methods. On this basis, a PID control design method is proposed, which utilizes only the Lipschitz constant information of the nonlinear uncertainties to achieve global stability control for the power systems. The paper provides a rigorous mathematical foundation to demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the controller. Finally, simulation studies are conducted to validate and evaluate the performance of the proposed model, algorithm, and controller design.
