In Situ Synchrotron Micro-CT of Microballoon-Filled RTV Silicone During Thermal Decomposition

This work investigates the thermal decomposition of microballoon-filled room-temperature-vulcanizing (RTV) silicone using time-resolved synchrotron micro-CT at the Advanced Light Source. In situ imaging of constrained and unconstrained samples captures the evolution of the internal microstructure during heating, including material expansion, microballoon and void growth, tearing, pyrolysis, shrinkage, and increasing porosity. The measurements provide new insight into the mechanisms governing RTV degradation and generate three-dimensional data for future quantitative analysis and material-response model development.

Recent Developments in Safe Lithium Ion Battery Design for Human Space Flight

This presentation provides an overview of EVA batteries and introduces the concept of designing lithium ion batteries that resist the propagation of a single cell catastrophic failure. Thermal runaway initiation methods are briefly discussed, and the safe performance of the resulting designs is summarized. Approached in an incremental fashion, each subsequent battery design is introduced, ending with a current development for the Exploration EVA spacesuit. Challenges in achieving safe design performance with limited internal volume are briefly discussed and forward work is identified. Video examples of both propagating and non-propagating designs are included.

A Study of Space Environment Effect on Highly Thermally Conductive Hybrid Carbon Fiber Polymer Composites

A set of novel highly thermally conductive hybrid carbon fiber (CF) polymer composites has been developed for lightweight thermal radiator applications in space missions. This study investigates the effects of the space environment on these materials following exposure in low-Earth orbit (LEO) during the Materials International Space Station Experiment (MISSE)-17 flight mission, where samples experienced 159 days of combined atomic oxygen (AO), ultraviolet (UV) radiation, high vacuum, space radiation and thermal cycling. Post-flight characterization included weight loss, surface morphology, thermo-optical properties, molecular structures, glass transition temperature, thermal degradation and thermal conductivity analyses. The pyrolytic graphite sheet (PGS) samples exhibited negligible weight loss, stable thermo-optical property, and only minor oxidation signature on the exposed surface. Although AO erosion of the epoxy polymer matrix was evident, carbon nanotube (CNT)-infused PGS/CF epoxy composites retained high thermal emissivity and preserved their high thermal conductivities. These results demonstrate that the novel highly thermally conductive hybrid CF composites possess strong environmental resilience and are promising candidates for lightweight thermal radiators and thermal management components in future space exploration missions.

Pressure Switch Is a Low Cost Battery Indicator

Conventional pressure switch, fabricated by printed-circuit manufacturing techniques, can indicate when charge on battery departs from preset level. Membrane on switch is exposed to internal pressure of battery, which varies according to stored charge. When pressure varies from preset level, switch can turn on a light-emitting diode or similar indicator to warn user that battery is low.

An Improved Theoretical Ni-Cd Battery Performance Model

Previous reports have shown how a battery model was developed using porous electrode theory. Since then the model has been upgraded and expanded. These upgrades include oxygen reation and positive electrode intercalation and proton diffusion. The effects of additional details of the solid state physics of the nickel electrode will be reported here.

High performance zinc anode for battery applications

An improved zinc anode for use in a high density rechargeable alkaline battery is disclosed. A process for making the zinc electrode comprises electrolytic loading of the zinc active material from a slightly acidic zinc nitrate solution into a substrate of nickel, copper or silver. The substrate comprises a sintered plaque having very fine pores, a high surface area, and 80-85 percent total initial porosity. The residual porosity after zinc loading is approximately 25-30%. The electrode of the present invention exhibits reduced zinc mobility, shape change and distortion, and demonstrates reduced dendrite buildup cycling of the battery. The disclosed battery is useful for applications requiring high energy density and multiple charge capability.

Thermal expansion behavior of LDEF metal matrix composites

The effects of the space environment on the thermal expansion stability of metal matrix composites (graphite/Al and graphite/Mg) will be presented. A sample from each category of metal matrix composites mounted on the leading and trailing edge was chosen for analysis of the temperature-time-thermal strain histories. Typical thermal expansion curves over the same range of temperature were selected at the beginning, mid, and end of the recording duration. The thermal expansion of selected post-flight LDEF samples were measured over the same range of temperature in the laboratory using a Michelson laser interferometer. The thermal strains were monitored concurrently with a laser interferometer and a mounted strain gage.

Battery charge control: Which approach is best?

The question of the best approach for battery charge control is addressed from two points of view: from the battery point-of-view; and from the spacecraft/mission point-of-view. In terms of performance, more aggressive charging can result in higher discharge voltage and capacity; however, aggressive charging usually implies more overcharge at higher rates and a concomitant higher end of charge temperature (higher stress, shorter life). In terms of life, benign charging can result in lower discharge voltage and capacity (poorer performance). Additionally, benign, or low stress charging, usually implies less overcharge at lower rates with lower end of charge temperature (lower stress, longer life). A discussion of these topics is presented in viewgraph form.

Observations of the microclimate of a lake under cold air advective conditions

The moderating effects of Lake Apopka, Florida, on downwind surface temperatures were evaluated under cold air advective conditions. Point temperature measurements north and south of the lake and data obtained from the NOAA satellite and a thermal scanner flown at 1.6 km, indicate that, under conditions of moderate winds (approximately 4m/sec), surface temperatures directly downwind may be higher than surrounding surface temperatures by as much as 5 C. With surface wind speed less than 1m/sec, no substantial temperature effects were observed. Results of this study are being used in land use planning, lake level control and in agriculture for selecting planting sites.

Extended Duration Orbiter Medical Project Microbial Air Sampler (STS-50/USML-1)

The Microbial Air Sampler was used on mission days 1, 7, and 13 in the Spacelab during STS-50/USML-1. Microbial air samples were collected using two types of media strips containing agar (Rose Bengal for yeast and molds, TSA for bacteria). The bacterial level found on day 1 was lower than experienced on previous Spacelab missions. A high level of fungi was present on day 1, however subsequent samples on days 7 and 13 did not indicate fungal growth. Bacterial growth was also minimized in this microgravity environment as the mission progressed. No pathogenic microorganisms were isolated, and the health risk from airborne microbes was minimal throughout the mission.

Nickel Hydrogen Battery Expert System

The Nickel Cadmium Battery Expert System-2, or 'NICBES-2', which was used by the NASA HST six-battery testbed, was subsequently converted into the Nickel Hydrogen Battery Expert System, or 'NICHES'. Accounts are presently given of this conversion process and future uses being contemplated for NICHES. NICHES will calculate orbital summary data at the end of each orbit, and store these files for trend analyses and rules-generation.

Nickel hydrogen common pressure vessel battery development

Our present design for a common pressure vessel (CPV) battery, a nickel hydrogen battery system to combine all of the cells into a common pressure vessel, uses an open disk which allows the cell to be set into a shallow cavity; subsequent cells are stacked on each other with the total number based on the battery voltage required. This approach not only eliminates the assembly error threat, but also more readily assures equal contact pressure to the heat fin between each cell, which further assures balanced heat transfer. These heat fin dishes with their appropriate cell stacks are held together with tie bars which in turn are connected to the pressure vessel weld rings at each end of the tube.
